Abstract

Contractures induced by 10(-9)-10(-4) M phenylephrine (PE) or 10-70 mM KCl were observed in aortas isolated from untreated and insulin-treated streptozotocin-diabetic rats. The experiments were conducted at 2-wk intervals for a 12-wk period after the induction of diabetes. Diabetes caused an average decrease of 58 and 60% in the K and PE contractures, respectively. Although the PE contractures in aortas from the insulin-treated diabetic animals (81%) were significantly greater than those in aortas from the untreated diabetic animals (60%), they were significantly less than those in control tissues (100%). Insulin treatment completely reversed the diabetes-induced decrease in the K contracture (102%). It appears that the diabetes-induced decreases in tension may result from an altered sensitivity of the tissues to KCl but not PE. Histological examination of the tissues revealed that the diminished contractions were not due to any detectable change in mural structure. The data indicate that diabetes-induced inhibition of the mechanisms involved in mediating the K contracture are completely reversible by insulin treatment, whereas those mediating the PE contracture are only partially reversible.

Abstract

The enzymes involved in the activation of the O -phosphate of p -hydroxyaniline mustard in cells in culture have been studied. The results are consistent with the view that the cytotoxic action of the drug against HeLa cells is dependent on the activity of alkaline phosphatase, of the carcinoplacental type, located in the cell membrane. The drug was shown to be a substrate for each of the isoenzymes of HeLa alkaline phosphatase. The importance of extracellular phosphatase in drug activation was also established.

Abstract

1, 2-Dimethylhydrazine treatment induced multiple colon tumors in 100% of NMRI mice. Many of these tumors were transplanted and yielded five serially transplantable tumor lines. These subcutaneously transplanted neoplasms were all adenocarcinomas varying in degree of differentiation and mucin production. No evidence of dedifferentiation or change in growth rate has been seen in up to six transplant generations. These tumor lines appeared to provide relatively stable, well-differentiated models for colorectal cancer.

Abstract

The phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography was applied to the tetragonal-monoclinic transformation in zirconia. Operation of variants of the lattice deformation can lead to a near-twin orientation relation between different regions of a transformed particle, and if these regions are in the form of plates, as observed, they will fit together with very small contact stresses. Misfit stresses with the matrix are also minimized, and the overall misfit strain of a transformed particle is a very close approximation to a plane strain.

Abstract

The effects of changes in process variables during fabrication of hard-drawn wire on the wire annealing rate have been investigated. The rate of annealing is strongly dependent on the temperature of hot-rolling from wire bar slice to rod. Extreme conditions of the time and temperature of the rod anneal prior to drawing can have a considerable effect on the annealing rate, but are unlikely to contribute much to the variability of annealing rates in practice. The ingot size, delay before quenching after hot-rolling, and wire drawing conditions are of little importance. The reasons for the changes in annealing rates are discussed and a suggestion made for improving the wire fabrication procedure in the spiral elongation test.

Abstract

It is shown that the rotation axis of a boundary containing dislocations of three systems can lie anywhere on the surface of a cone; to each direction of the rotation axis there corresponds a single boundary plane. The theory cannot explain the experimental evidence on misorientations in zinc unless slip occurs in non-basal directions, or on planes not hitherto reported, at high temperatures. The experimental evidence for face-centred cubic metals is insufficiently precise to form a test of the theory.

The original of the document here translated (K 4806) is unfortunately muchinjured, and the text presents great—Dr. Jensen has said insuperable—difficulties to the translator. Dr. Sayce has attempted a version of Col. I. in his Hibbert Lectures, p. 495. Dr. Jensen has made some good remarks on the piece, and given a version of Col. I. 8–15 in his Kosmologie (pp. 91 sqq). A closer studyof the entire text reveals important points of contact between this document and others, published in the same volume of inscriptions, from which I have attempted to extract a connected sense elsewhere (Glimpses of Babylonian Religion, P.S.B.A., Feb. 1892). These will be noticed in due course. In general, it may be said that, in spite of a few still enigmatical expressions, it is clear that we have in this interesting relic of Babylonian religion an Office or Liturgy, in which rubrics or ritual directions are interspersed with prayers and invocations of gods.

Abstract

The recovery of 99·996% pure nickel deformed at low temperatures has been investigated in the range 25° to 350°c. Stage IV recovery previously reported to occur at 260°c was not observed but stage III, centred at 90°c, was found. Additions of up to 0·50 at. % iron or 0·46 at. % silicon produced only slight changes in the recovery spectrum. Addition of 0·04 at. % gold produced a very small recovery stage at about 230°c, and 0·51 at. % gold made separate recovery stages indistinguishable. Addition of 0·04 at. % carbon caused a recovery stage to appear at 260°c, and this stage increased in magnitude with increasing carbon content. The results suggest that stage IV recovery in deformed nickel could be caused by the migration of carbon atoms and the stage in which free migration of single vacancies occurs has not been positively identified.

Abstract

SUMMARY The kinetics of thermal inactivation of peroxidase were found to he first-order for the range of temperatures 85–100°C. The experimental activation energy was 25.1 kilocalories per mole; free energy change, 27.0–27.5 kilocalories per mole; and entropy change, a negative 7.39–7.89 calories per mole degree. This indicated that the transfer of energy was extremely slow or the activated molecule was actually more rigid than the native molecule, the latter being more likely than the former. No regeneration occurred when peroxidase had been completely inactivated. Regeneration was found to involve a lag period of approximately 20 hr, a rapid rate period of l-2 days, a point of maximum regeneration at 2–10 days, and finally a decrease in activity after inactivation. The thermal destruction time (z value) of 49.8°F indicated that in high-temperature short-time processes the criterion for sufficiency might necessarily be based on the time required to inactivate peroxidase rather than on the time required to sterilize the product.

Abstract

The Yoshida sarcoma and a line derived from it showing acquired resistance to alkylating agents have been compared from a number of aspects: chromosome number, growth rate, nucleic acid, protein and free thiol content. Although the degree of resistance to the alkylating agent Melphalan has been demonstrated to be at least 100 times greater than in the sensitive strain, the two tumours have been very similar in all aspects so far studied. A small, and not highly significant, increase in glutathione content of the solid resistant tumour has been the only difference so far demonstrated. On a compare le sarcome de Yoshida et une lignee derivee de celui-ci et presentant une resistance acquise aux agents alcoylants; la comparaison a porte notamment sur les points suivants: nombres de chromosomes, taux de croissance, teneur en acides nucleiques, en proteines et en thiols libres. Bien qu'on ait montre que la resistance a un alcoylant, le Melphalan, etait multipliee au moins par 100, les deux tumeurs se sont revelees tres semblables sur tous les points etudies jusqu'a present. La seule difference qu'on ait pu mettre en evidence est une augmentation legere, pas tres significative, de la teneur en glutathion de la tumeur resistante.
