103. Using document delivery data for selecting medical titles in a large STM library

Abstract

This paper describes how a large science, technology and medicine (STM) library used document delivery data to support the selection of new journal titles in order to better meet the needs of document delivery clients. Over a nine-month period in 2004, the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI) undertook a review of its current serial subscriptions to determine whether they continued to meet the needs of researchers at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the needs of document delivery clients both in Canada and internationally. This paper describes the study of the print serial collection and the findings. Bibliographic data on current serial titles in CISTI's Catalogue was compared with Document Delivery data on filled orders. Further analysis was then done to extract document delivery usage data on unfilled orders. Subject analysis of the collection and usage were done by Library of Congress (LC) Classification and by user group. The data on unfilled document delivery orders identified titles not held at CISTI but from which clients were requesting articles. Data from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) was used to identify titles needed by Canadian libraries but not widely available in Canada. The findings showed that while CISTI clients were well served in most fields, there was a need to enhance the collection, notably in the health sciences and to a lesser extent, business. As a result, 135 new medical and health serial titles were purchased. Abstract

Marcantonio Raimondi's Il Sogno and Albrecht Dürer's Sea Monster share a number of compositional similarities as well as a fascination with the bizarre. The association of monstrous forms as an omen of grave misfortune, including pestilence and war, was particularly common at the beginning of the sixteenth century. In Marcantonio's engraving the chimeric monsters, billowing inferno and shooting star can be perceived as a graphic warning that by 1509 Venice's world was in deep peril. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Women who use tentative language are more likely to influence men than women who use assertive language, despite the perception that tentative women are lower on agentic traits like knowledge, competence, and intelligence. This study tests a self-categorization explanation of female influence. Male and female participants (N = 269) listened to a tape of a female speaker who used either tentative or assertive language under conditions that led participants to categorize the speaker in terms of her gender, or as a college student. All participants judged the tentative speaker to be lower than the assertive speaker on agentic traits. There was no evidence that women were differentially influenced by the speaker's linguistic style, or by the categorization. Men were more influenced by the tentative speaker when she was categorized as a woman than when categorized as a college student. This effect was partially mediated by men's collective self-esteem. Men were more influenced by an assertive than tentative speaker when the speaker was categorized as a college student. This effect was fully mediated by perceived similarity to the speaker. Abstract

This paper considers how electronic technology use in organizations can contribute to destructive communication and outcomes. We propose that destructive communication consists of intentional or unintentional communication acts that are predominantly harmful to organizational members, groups within organizations, or organizations as a whole. Working from this definition, we examine the potentially destructive aspects of electronic technology use in organizations, by introducing five types of destructive activities. We elaborate on the various types of destructive communication behaviors within each category and, using an organizational case study, illustrate one example of how destructive communication acts may occur and discuss its consequences.
