102. Losing What You Never Had: How a Strike Changed Management's (Perception of Their) Network Position

- Abstract
This chapter demonstrates how social network analyses can be used to analyse social relations at the work floor. In particular, we analyse how the private and work-related communication between middle and lower management and workers changed after a strike. We focus on the network position of the manager and four supervisor's vis à vis the strikers. We find that supervisors become less central in the network which split into two cohesive subgroups of strikers and non-strikers after the strike. The supervisors and the manager became detached from the group of strikers, and specifically suffered severe loss of personal ties to these colleagues. Remarkably, many of the ties the manager reported before the strike, were not reciprocated by his (striking) subordinates and thus only existed in the perception of the manager. A similar pattern arises for the supervisor who supervised the majority of the strikers. This suggests that a strike confronted workplace leadership with a reality check on their network. We propose some preliminary explanations for management's network misperceptions, and how crises, such as strikes, clear the view on managers' network.

METIS, the Mid-IR instrument for the ELT will be operating an internal Single Conjugate Adaptive Optics System (SCAO), which will be the work horse AO system and mainly serve the science cases targeting exoplanets and disks around bright stars. In order to extend the sky coverage and brightness range of targets requiring AO correction to fainter stars, a Single Laser Adaptive Optics (SLAO) system is proposed. Although SLAO systems are currently in operation on 8-10 meter class (and smaller) telescopes, extending SLAO systems to the ELT increases the challenges associated with the cone effect and the spot elongation significantly. But since METIS will be operated at L-band, the requirements on required AO correction are fortunately reduced (with respect to other ELT instruments), making a SLAO system an attractive low-cost option for METIS. The METIS SLAO system will operate using an on-axis Laser Guide Star (LGS) and re-use the internal SCAO WFS for field stabilization and low-order correction (truth sensing), further reducing cost and complexity. In this paper we will present the current state of the design of the METIS SLAO system, and will address the challenges, like the impact of the cone effect, spot elongation and design constraints on the system. We will show that this system will likely provide a >60% SR in L-band over >50% of the sky, providing an attractive addition to the METIS SCAO system.

We present the first rest-frame of approximately 4 microns detection of a Lyman break galaxy. The data were obtained using the 16 microns imaging capability of the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. The target object, J134026.44+634433.2, is an extremely luminous Lyman break galaxy at z=2.79, first identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra (as reported by Bentz et al.). The source is strongly detected with a flux of 0.94 +/- 0.02 mJy. Combining Spitzer and SDSS photometry with supporting ground-based J- and K-band data, we show that the spectral energy distribution is consistent with an actively star-forming galaxy. We also detect other objects in the Spitzer field of view, including a very red mid-infrared source. We find no evidence of a strong lens among the mid-infrared sources.

- Abstract
The Mid-Infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph (METIS) is one of three first light instruments on the ELT. It will provide high-contrast imaging and medium resolution, slit-spectroscopy from 3 - 19um, as well as high resolution (R 100,000) integral field spectroscopy from 2.9-5.3µm. All modes observe at the diffraction limit of the ELT, by means of adaptive optics, yielding angular resolutions of a few tens of milliarcseconds. The range of METIS science is broad, from Solar System objects to active galactic nuclei (AGN). We will present an update on the main science drivers for METIS: circum-stellar disks and exoplanets. The METIS project is now in full steam, approaching its preliminary design review (PDR) in 2018. In this paper we will present the current status of its optical, mechanical and thermal design as well as operational aspects. We will also discuss the challenges of building an instrument for the ELT, and the required technologies.

Despite the importance of social dialogue for the European social model, there has been little attention to the factors that account for social partner engagement with European social dialogue. On the basis of data from 28 European sectoral social dialogue committees, this article investigates structural factors that account for the conclusion of European sectoral social dialogue agreements. It is found that actors' organisational density is a necessary but not sufficient factor for successful European social dialogue and four different categories of sectoral social partner engagement with European social dialogue are identified.

146. Where Did Fintechs Come from, and Where Do They Go? The Transformation of the Financial Industry in Germany after Digitalization

- Abstract
The digitalization of financial services opened a window for new players in the financial industry. These start-ups take on tasks and functions previously reserved for banks, such as lending, payments, or investment. In this article, we trace the transformation of the industry after digitalization. By using data on FinTech formations in Germany, we show that entrepreneurial dynamics in the FinTech sector are not so much driven by technology as by the educational and business background of the founders. Furthermore, we investigate the reactions of traditional banks to the emergence of these start-ups. In contrast with other emerging industries such as biotechnology, a network analysis shows that FinTechs have mostly engaged in strategic partnerships and only a few banks have acquired or obtained a financial interest in a FinTech. We explain the restraint of banks to fully endorse the new possibilities of digitalized financial services with the characteristics of the technology itself and with the postponed fundamental decisions of banks to modernize their IT infrastructure.

Previous studies on collective bargaining structures and macroeconomic performance have largely ignored the role of stable and instable institutional structures and the effects of institutional change itself. In this article we posit that institutional stability of collective bargaining is of major importance for the moderation of unit labour costs growth. This hypothesis is tested on the basis of data which cover the period 1965–2012 and includes 28 countries. The results show that institutional change impairs the capacity to moderate unit labour cost growth significantly in the subsequent years following the change. This effect also holds for changes in both decentralization and centralization of institutions.

The [NII] 122 and 205 ��m transitions are powerful tracers of the ionized gas in the interstellar medium. By combining data from 21 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH and Beyond the Peak surveys, we have compiled 141 spatially resolved regions with a typical size of ~1 kiloparsec, with observations of both [NII] far-infrared lines. We measure [NII] 122/205 line ratios in the ~0.6-6 range, which corresponds to electron gas densities $n_e$~1-300 cm$^{-3}$, with a median value of $n_e$=30 cm$^{-3}$. Variations in the electron density within individual galaxies can be as a high as a factor of ~50, frequently with strong radial gradients. We find that $n_e$ increases as a function of infrared color, dust-weighted mean starlight intensity, and star formation rate surface density ($��_{SFR}$). As the intensity of the [NII] transitions is related to the ionizing photon flux, we investigate their reliability as tracers of the star formation rate (SFR). We derive relations between the [NII] emission and SFR in the low-density limit and in the case of a log-normal distribution of densities. The scatter in the correlation between [NII] surface brightness and $��_{SFR}$ can be understood as a property of the $n_e$ distribution. For regions with $n_e$ close to or higher than the [NII] line critical densities, the low-density limit [NII]-based SFR calibration systematically underestimates the SFR since [NII] emission is collisionally quenched. Finally, we investigate the relation between [NII] emission, SFR, and $n_e$ by comparing our observations to predictions from the MAPPINGS-III code., 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
