101. Risk-based standards for PCBs in soil : Proposals for environmental risk limits and maximum values

Abstract: RIVM rapport:Het RIVM doet een voorstel voor nieuwe wetenschappelijk onderbouwde normen voor PCB-verontreinigingen (polychloorbifenylen) in de bodem. Dit is nodig om te beoordelen voor welke doeleinden afgegraven grond kan worden hergebruikt. De kwaliteit van de grond bepaalt óf dat kan en voor welke bestemming het mag worden hergebruikt: bij voldoende kwaliteit voor 'wonen', anders voor 'industrie'. Voor de beoordeling van hergebruik van grond wordt aan de hand van een standaardlijst gemeten welke vervuilende stoffen in de bodem zitten. In 2008 zijn PCB's aan deze stoffenlijst toegevoegd. De kwaliteit van de grond wordt beoordeeld op basis van de grenswaarden voor deze stoffen (de zogenoemde Maximale Waarden). Tot op heden bestonden er geen wetenschappelijk onderbouwde maximale waarden voor PCB's. De voorgestelde wetenschappelijk onderbouwde normen voor PCBverontreinigingen zijn gebaseerd op de blootstelling van marterachtigen aan PCB's. Het blijkt namelijk dat marterachtigen als meest gevoelige soort kunnen worden aangeduid. Tot nu toe waren de risicogrenswaarden van PCB's in de bodem alleen gebaseerd op de directe giftigheid van deze stoffen voor mens of ecosystemen. Het is echter gebleken dat ophoping van PCB's in de voedselketen een groter risico vormt dan directe giftigheid. Als ophoping in de voedselketen niet wordt meegenomen, wordt het risico onderschat., The RIVM proposes new science-based quality standards for PCB contaminants (polychlorinated biphenyls) in the soil. This is necessary to assess the possibilities for the reuse of excavated soils. The quality of the soil determines the type of land use for which the soil can be reused. If the quality is high enough, this can be the land use 'residential with garden', if not it can be reused for the land use 'industrial'. For the reusing of soil it is determined which contaminants are in the soil by use of a standard list. In 2008, PCBs were added to this list of substances. The quality of the soil is determined based on the proposed quality standards (socalled maximum values). To date, however, there have been no scientifically based maximum values for PCBs. The proposed science-based quality standards for PCBs in soil are based on the exposure of mustelids to PCBs. It appears that mustelids are designated as the family of animals that are most sensitive to PCBs. Up to now, the risk limits of PCBs in the soil were based only on the direct toxicity of these substances for humans and ecosystems. However, the accumulation of PCBs in the food chain is a greater risk than direct toxicity. If accumulation in the food chain is not included in risk assessment, the risk is underestimated.

Abstract: Body fat distribution is a heritable trait and a well-established predictor of adverse metabolic outcomes, independent of overall adiposity. To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of body fat distribution and its molecular links to cardiometabolic traits, here we conduct genome-wide association meta-analyses of traits related to waist and hip circumferences in up to 224,459 individuals. We identify 49 loci (33 new) associated with waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (BMI), and an additional 19 loci newly associated with related waist and hip circumference measures (P < 5 × 10(-8)). In total, 20 of the 49 waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI loci show significant sexual dimorphism, 19 of which display a stronger effect in women. The identified loci were enriched for genes expressed in adipose tissue and for putative regulatory elements in adipocytes. Pathway analyses implicated adipogenesis, angiogenesis, transcriptional regulation and insulin resistance as processes affecting fat distribution, providing insight into potential pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract: A handout is what most welfare agencies, and many other organizations working similarly with the poor, give. A hand up is what Total Action Against Poverty in the Roanoke Valley gives--a hand up to bring the poor and uneducated into the mainstream of community life. Under the leadership of Cabell Brand, dividing his time between his business and the TAP presidency, the organization has been successful in extending hands up for more than two decades. He provides an example of an executive who has personally improved the lives of his neighbors. Education is a particular emphasis of TAP: Head Start centers, programs to counsel "stuck" high school students and channel them to colleges and vocational schools, high school dropout alternative education programs, and adult education. TAP helps ex-offenders and prison inmates get back into society and brings water and waste treatment facilities to the rural poor. TAP spearheads neighborhood rehabilitation efforts and offers counsel to battered women, alcohol abusers, and persons beset by housing problems. It runs a food bank and gives emergency assistance. 114. Recidivism in subgroups of serious juvenile offenders: Different profiles, different risks?

Abstract: Background Research has shown that the treatment of juvenile offenders is most effective when it takes into account the possible risk factors for re-offending. It may be asked whether juvenile offenders can be treated as one homogeneous group, or, if they are divisible into subgroups, whether different risk factors are predictive of recidivism. Aims and hypotheses Our aims were to find out whether serious juvenile offenders may be subdivided into clearly defined subgroups and whether such subgroups might differ in terms of the risk factors that predict recidivism. Methods In a sample of 1111 serious juvenile offenders, latent class analysis was used to identify subgroups. For each juvenile offender, 70 risk factors were registered. Severity of recidivism was measured on a 12-point scale. Analysis was then conducted to identify the risk factors that best predicted the different patterns of recidivism. Results Four distinct subgroups of juvenile offenders were identified: serious violent offenders, violent property offenders, property offenders, and sex offenders. Violent property offenders were the most serious recidivists and had the highest number of risk factors. Serious violent offenders and property offenders were characterised by overt and covert behaviour, respectively. Sex offenders differed from the other three groups in the rarity of their recidivism and in the risk factors that are present. For each of these four subgroups, a different set of risk factors was found to predict severity of recidivism. Conclusions Differences in recidivism rates occurred in spite of the fact that most of these youngsters had been in the standard treatment programme offered to serious juvenile offenders in the Netherlands. This was not a treatment outcome study, but the indication that two of the groups identified in our study appeared to be worse after going through this programme, whereas the other two did quite well in terms of recidivism lends weight to our idea that such classification of juvenile offenders may lead to more targeted treatment programmes that would better serve both the general public and the youths concerned. Abstract: Background Imiquimod 5% cream can reduce or clear superficial and small nodular basal cell carcinoma (BCC). It could be used as a pretreatment of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) to decrease defect size. Objectives To study if a pretreatment with imiquimod 5% cream decreases defect size after MMS. In addition, to study the effect on the number of Mohs stages and reconstruction time. Methods Seventy patients aged >18 years with a primary nodular BCC in the face were included. The imiquimod group used imiquimod 5% cream for 4 weeks, before MMS. The control group was treated with MMS only. Tumour and defect sizes were measured. We noted the number of Mohs stages, reconstruction time and side-effects. Results The median percentage increase in area from tumour size at baseline to the post-MMS defect for the imiquimod group was significantly less compared with the control group, 50% vs. 147% (P < 0.001). A tendency towards fewer Mohs stages in the imiquimod group was observed and the reconstruction time was significantly shorter in this group (P = 0.01). Conclusions Imiquimod 5% cream as pretreatment of MMS significantly reduced the tumour size in primary nodular BCC and reduced the surgical defect size. Further research is necessary to investigate cost-effectiveness.

Abstract: RIVM rapport:Evaluatie gebruik van bodemnormen in de CROW 132 - het instrumentarium dat arbeidsrisico's van werken met verontreinigde bodem beoordeelt Mensen die beroepsmatig met verontreinigde grond werken, moeten beschermd worden tegen gezondheidsrisico's. Afhankelijk van de mate van vervuiling wordt met behulp van de CROW 132-methode bepaald wanneer zij welke veiligheidsmaatregelen moeten nemen. Een classificatie wordt gemaakt op basis van bestaande bodemnormen voor het gehalte aan chemische stoffen in de verontreinigde grond. Uit onderzoek van het RIVM blijkt dat deze bodemnormen niet geschikt zijn om op deze wijze gezondheidsrisico's voor werkers te bepalen. De normen kunnen in bepaalde situaties mogelijk leiden tot strenge, onnodig zware maatregelen. Omdat meetgegevens van de blootstelling van werkers ontbreken is echter onduidelijk wanneer en in hoeverre dit het geval is. Het kan echter ook zijn dat maatregelen onvoldoende bescherming bieden, bijvoorbeeld als zich lokaal hoge concentraties van een vluchtige stof voordoen en de weersomstandigheden ongunstig zijn (weinig wind, warm weer). De classificatie van CROW 132 is gebaseerd op zogeheten interventiewaarden voor bodem. Deze waarden zijn erop gericht het ecosysteem of de mens bij 'wonen met tuingebruik' te beschermen tegen negatieve effecten van een chemische stof. De strengste van deze twee waarden bepaalt de interventiewaarde van een stof in de bodem. Deze 'beschermingsdoelen' verschillen echter te veel van de situatie van de werker en zijn daarom niet geschikt om de gezondheidsrisico's voor hen te kunnen beoordelen. Er is behoefte aan een aanpak die rekening houdt met de mate waarin de werker in de praktijk aan stoffen blootstaat (risicogestuurde aanpak). Ook is het van belang om bij de classificatie onderscheid te maken tussen vluchtige en niet-vluchtige stoffen. Voor niet-vluchtige stoffen is de mate van blootstelling onbekend. Momenteel wordt geen onderscheid gemaakt tussen risico's van het inademen van stofdeeltj, Evaluation of the use of soil quality standards in the CROW 132 - a tool to evaluate the occupational health risks of working with contaminated soil Professionals working with contaminated soil have to be protected from health risks. The CROW 132 tool is developed to determine which risk reduction measures are needed, dependent on the level of contamination. For this purpose, contaminants are classified based on existing soil quality standards for contaminated soils. This RIVM evaluation concludes that the soil quality standards are not suitable for determination of the health risk of workers. Use of the existing soil quality standards can give rise to protective measures that are unnecessarily rigid. Because of the absence of actual exposure measurements, it cannot be determined in which situations and to which extent this occurs. The classification by CROW 132 may also lead to insufficient protection, for instance when high peak concentrations of a volatile contaminants occur or in case of unfavourable weather conditions (such as calm wind, high temperature). The classification by CROW 132 is based on the Dutch Intervention Values for soil. These values either aim at protecting the ecosystem or the general human population for the scenario residential with garden from adverse effects of contaminated soils. The lower of these two values is chosen as the Intervention Value for soil. However, the protection goals and the derivation methodology of the Intervention values, differs considerably from those generally applied in the occupational situation. There is a need for a methodology that adequately allows for the specific conditions when working with contaminated soil (risk-based approach). Abstract: RIVM rapport:Het RIVM heeft geïnventariseerd welke toets- en rekeninstrumenten vergun-ningverleners kunnen gebruiken om de effecten van ruimtelijke plannen op onze leefomgeving te beoordelen. Hierbij lag de nadruk op de instrumenten die re-gelmatig worden gebruikt en die juridische gevolgen kunnen hebben. Het toets- en rekeninstrumentarium kan onder andere worden vereenvoudigd als de toet-singscriteria en de regelgeving beter op elkaar worden afgestemd. Ook zijn een-voudige screeningtools gewenst. Hierdoor kan het lokale omgevingsbeleid effec-tiever worden uitgevoerd. Verder blijkt er een groot aantal verschillende toets- en rekeninstrumenten be-schikbaar te zijn. Vaak zijn de rekenvoorschriften in wet- en regelgeving vastge-legd. Dit geldt in een enkel geval ook voor de te gebruiken data. Naarmate de wet- en regelgeving minder specifiek voorschrijft hoe de beoordeling moet wor-den uitgevoerd, ontstaat meer ruimte voor interpretatie en discussie. Soms be-perkt de wet- en regelgeving zich alleen tot de doelen en criteria waaraan moet worden voldaan. Voor enkele beoordelingsdomeinen, zoals lucht en bodemsanering, zijn al een-voudige screeningtools beschikbaar waarmee snel de effecten kunnen worden beoordeeld. Voor andere beoordelingen zouden ook screeningtools ontwikkeld moeten worden. Bij lucht geldt dat wanneer er geen of nauwelijks effecten op-treden in de leefomgeving, er voor de beoordeling geen complexe berekeningen noodzakelijk zijn. Aanbevolen wordt om dit principe ook bij de ontwikkeling van screeningtools voor andere beschermingsdoelen, zoals waterkwaliteit of de ge-luidsbelasting, te hanteren. Het RIVM heeft dit onderzoek uitgevoerd voor de ontwikkeling van de 'Laan van de Leefomgeving', het digitale stelsel dat de uitvoering van de nieuwe Omge-vingswet gaat ondersteunen., The RIVM has made an inventory of the assessment and computation tools that authorities use to assess the effects of spatial plans on our living environment. Furthermore, it turns out that there is a large number of assessment and com-putation tools available. Often the computational requirements are laid down in the law and regulations. In some cases the regulations also define the data to be used. As the legislation becomes less specific on how the assessment should be carried out, more room for interpretation and discussion arises. Sometimes the legislation is restricted to the goals and criteria to be met. For some assessments, such as air quality or soil sanitation sites, simple screen-ing tools to quickly assess the effects are available. Similar screening tools need to be developed for other assessments. To improve the application of screening tools for air quality, specific criteria have been defined for the selection of plans with no or hardly any effect on the environment, thereby avoiding more costly and complex computations. It is recommended to develop comparable (selec-tion) criteria for other environmental objectives, such as water quality protection and noise. The RIVM has conducted this research for the development of the so-called 'Avenue of the Environment', the digital information system that will be devel-oped to support the execution of the new environmental code.

129. Development of emission testing values to assess sustainable landfill management on pilot landfills : Phase 2: Proposals for testing values

Abstract: RIVM rapport:Sinds de jaren negentig wordt internationaal onderzoek verricht naar 'duurzaam stortbeheer'. Het idee hierachter is dat de bron, de stortplaats zelf, schoner wordt, zodat er minder verontreinigingen uit de stortplaatsen kunnen weg lekken. Op deze manier worden de bodem en het nabijgelegen grondwater beschermd. Tot nu toe zijn er nog geen technieken beschikbaar waarvan het effect op grote schaal bewezen is. In dat verband heeft het RIVM, in samenwerking met Energieonderzoek Centrum Nederland (ECN), onderzoek gedaan voor drie vuilstortlocaties in Nederland. Voor deze locaties zijn 'emissietoetswaarden' afgeleid, waarmee kan worden vastgesteld hoeveel schadelijke stoffen er maximaal in het water afkomstig van de stortplaats mag zitten. Bij duurzaam stortbeheer wordt het afval geïnfiltreerd met water en lucht. Hierdoor treden er processen op die stimuleren dat de verontreinigingen in de stortplaats worden afgebroken of zich binden aan stoffen in het afval. Na een proefperiode van tien jaar zouden de nog aanwezige concentraties in de stortplaats lager moeten zijn. Het gaat om concentraties van organische stoffen (zoals PAK's), anorganische stoffen (zoals metalen) en 'macro-parameters' als nitraat, fosfaat en chloride. Het 'vertrekpunt' bij de berekening van de emissietoetswaarden zijn de maximaal toegestane concentraties van verontreinigende stoffen in het grondwater en oppervlaktewater dat zich naast de stortplaatsen bevindt. Vandaaruit zijn deze concentraties omgerekend naar de hoeveelheden die het water dat afkomstig is van de stortplaats (percolaat) zou mogen bevatten. Hierbij is rekening gehouden met de mate waarin stoffen in het grond- en oppervlaktewater worden verdund, door bijvoorbeeld regenwater of nabijgelegen grondwater. Ook kunnen stoffen zich binden aan bodemdeeltjes. Het huidige beleid voor het beheer van stortplaatsen is erop gericht om verontreinigingen in het afval volledig water- en luchtdicht in te pakken (zowel aan de boven- als aan de onderkant). The idea of this is that the source, the landfill itself, becomes cleaner, so that fewer harmful substances are emitted by landfills, and the surrounding soil and groundwater are protected. With sustainable landfill management, the waste is actively infiltrated with water and air (active treatment). This causes processes that stimulate the degradation and binding of the substances in the landfill during a trial period of approximately ten years. After approximately ten years, the concentrations of substances remaining in the landfill should be lower: that is, concentrations of organic substances (such as PAHs), inorganic substances (such as metals) and macroparameters (such as nitrate, phosphate and chloride). The "starting point" in the calculation of the emission testing values is the maximum allowable concentration of substances in groundwater and surface water next to the landfills. From there, these concentrations are converted to quantities in the landfill leachate. Account is taken of the extent to which substances are diluted, by for example rainwater or groundwater nearby. In ground- and surface water substances can also bind to soil particles. The current policy for landfill management is focused on the complete containment of substances in the waste (waterproof and airtight, with a top cover and bottom liner). Abstract: Inleiding: De crisis van 2008 heeft de arbeidspositie van jongeren bemoeilijkt. Jongeren komen minder snel aan een baan en zijn minder kritisch gaan kijken naar de aangeboden functies met als gevolg overkwalificatie (Oorschot & Reeskens, 2012). Overkwalificatie zorgt voor vervelende effecten, maar wat voor invloed hebben deze effecten op de geluksbeleving van overgekwalificeerde jongeren? Mensen die ongelukkig zijn ervaren bijvoorbeeld meer verdriet en minder blijdschap wat lichamelijke klachten tot gevolg kan hebben (Fitoussi, Sen & Stiglitz, 2009). De centrale doelstelling van deze thesis betreft het inzichtelijk maken van de geluksbeleving van hoger opgeleide overgekwalificeerde jongeren. Ook wordt er gekeken naar de invloed van de crisis op de geluksbeleving van overgekwalificeerde jongeren. Theoretisch kader: Veenhoven (1996, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2010) heeft veel onderzoek gedaan naar kwaliteit van leven, geluk en tevredenheid. In het theoretisch kader wordt dan ook veel literatuur van Veenhoven aangehaald. Om de geluksbeleving te meten kan worden gevraagd hoe tevreden iemand is met bijvoorbeeld het leven in zijn totaliteit. Tevredenheid heeft betrekking op de waardering van het huidige leven. Toegelicht wordt hoe geluk gemeten kan worden (Veenhoven, 2002). Over het algemeen lijkt er een discrepantie te bestaan tussen de verschillende resultaten die naar voren zijn gekomen binnen de literatuurstudie. Aan de ene kant zou overkwalificatie vervelende gevolgen hebben, zoals een hoger ziekteverzuim en vaker wisselen van baan. Aan de andere kant hebben hoger opgeleide jongeren over het algemeen een betere gezondheid, lijden ze minder onder werkloosheid en hebben ze meer sociale contacten. Methode: Om de onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden is er voor gekozen om een secundaire kwantitatieve analyse uit te voeren met de Loonwijzerdataset. Abstract: The G protein-coupled receptor kinase 4 is involved in renal sodium handling and blood pressure regulation. Missense variants have already been tested functionally and are associated with hypertension, but no data on promoter analyses are yet available. We scanned 94 hypertensive white subjects for genetic variation and performed promoter reporter gene analyses in HEK293T, COS7, and SaOs-2 cells. Transient transfections with various full lengths and wild-type deletion constructs revealed that 1851 bp of the flanking region and 275 bp of the 5'-untranslated region were sufficient for transcriptional activities and composed a powerful cis-active element in the distal 293 bp. The -1702T and +2T alleles resulted in drastic general reductions of promoter function, whereas an activity increasing effect of +268C was cell type specific. Electrophoretic mobility-shift assay, supershift, and cotransfection analyses of transcription factor binding sites predicted in silico (Alibaba2.1/Transfac7) resulted in allele-specific binding patterns of nuclear proteins and identified the participation of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein transcription factor family members. The G protein-coupled receptor kinase 4 core promoter resides in the first 1851 bp upstream of its transcription start site. Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Previous studies found significant association of hypertension and hypertension-related phenotypes with genetic variation in SAH (Spontaneously hypertensive rat-clone A-Hypertension-associated). We sought independent confirmation of these findings in the European Project On Genes in Hypertension. METHODS AND RESULTS: We randomly recruited 2603 relatives from 560 families and 31 unrelated subjects from six European populations (mean age 38.8 +/- 15.7 years; 52.1% women). We measured systolic/diastolic blood pressure (mean, 122.4/76.6 mmHg), body mass index (24.9 kg/m2), triceps skinfold (1.7 cm), waist-to-hip ratio (0.83 units), serum total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (5.14 and 1.33 mmol/l), serum triglycerides (1.95 mmol/l) and blood glucose (4.90 mmol/l). We genotyped the G-1606A and -962del/ins polymorphisms. In all subjects, the allele frequencies were 11.8 and 29.5% for -1606A and -962del, respectively. Lewontin's D' was 0.97 (P < 0.0001). Haplotype frequencies were 58.8% for -1606G plus -962ins, 29.5% for -1606G plus -962del, and 11.7% for -1606A plus -962ins. Both before and after adjustment for covariates, none of the phenotype-genotype associations approached statistical significance. Our study had 80% power to detect on two-sided tests (P = 0.05), effect sizes of 1.8/1.3 mmHg for systolic/diastolic blood pressure, 0.52 kg/m2 for body mass index, 0.01 units for the waist-to-hip ratio, 0.96 mm for the triceps skinfold, 0.13 and 0.05 mmol/l for total and HDL cholesterol, 0.18 mmol/l for serum triglycerides, and 0.11 mmol/l for blood glucose. The family-based analyses did not reveal population stratification (P > or = 0.67). Abstract: This RIVM description of the CSOIL 2000 model deals, for the first time, with all aspects of the model. CSOIL 2000 can be used to derive intervention values. Intervention values are calculated for contaminated soil and represent a measure for determining when contaminated soil needs to be remediated. CSOIL 2000 calculates the risks that humans are exposed to if they come into contact with soil contamination. Humans can be exposed to contaminated soil via different exposure routes (soil, air, water and crops). The soil use, such as a vegetable garden, determines the measure of exposure. Physical-chemical properties of the contaminant in soil air, soil particles and groundwater also have an influence on the exposure. CSOIL 2000 also calculates the maximum concentration of a contaminant in the soil at which it is still safe for humans. This maximum concentration influences the level of the intervention value. In soil contamination the intervention value differentiates between lightly and seriously contaminated soils. The urgency of remediation is therefore determined by the level at which soil contamination exceeds the intervention value.

Abstract: Background: Inhibitory antibodies towards enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) are associated with disease progression and poor outcome in affected male patients with lysosomal disorders such as Fabry disease (FD). However, little is known about the impact of immunosuppressive therapy on ERT inhibition in these patients with FD.Methods: In this retrospective study, we investigated the effect of long-term immunosuppression on ERT inhibition in male patients with FD (n = 26) receiving immunosuppressive therapy due to kidney (n = 24) or heart (n = 2) transplantation.Results: No ERT-naïve transplanted patient (n = 8) developed antibodies within follow-up (80 ±72 months) after ERT initiation. Seven (26.9%) patients were tested ERT inhibition positive prior to transplantation. No de novo ERT inhibition was observed after transplantation (n = 18). In patients treated with high dosages of immunosuppressive medication such as prednisolone, tacrolimus and mycophenolate-mofetil/mycophenolate acid, ERT inhibition decreased after transplantation (n = 12; P = 0.0160). Tapering of immunosuppression (especially prednisolone) seemed to re-increase ERT inhibition (n = 4, median [range]: 16.6 [6.9; 36.9] %; P = 0.0972) over time. One ERT inhibition-positive patient required interventions with steroid therapy and increased doses of tacrolimus, which also lowered ERT inhibition.Conclusion: We conclude that the immunosuppressive maintenance therapy after transplantations seems to be sufficient to prevent de novo ERT inhibition in ERT-naïve patients. Intensified high dosages of immunosuppressive drugs are associated with decreased antibody titres and decreased ERT inhibition in affected patients, but did not result in long-term protection. Future studies are needed to establish ERT inhibition-specific immunosuppressive protocols with long-term modulating properties to warrant an improved disease course in ERT inhibition-positive males. Abstract: In the European Project on Genes in Hypertension (EPOGH), we investigated in three populations to what extent in a family-based study, left ventricular mass (LVM) was associated with the C-532T and G-6A polymorphisms in the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene. We randomly recruited 221 nuclear families (384 parents and 440 offspring) in Cracow (Poland), Novosibirsk (Russia), and Mirano (Italy). Echocardiographic LVM was indexed to body surface area, adjusted for covariables, and subjected to multivariate analyses, using generalized estimating equations and quantitative transmission disequilibrium tests in a population-based and family-based approach, respectively. We found significant differences between the two Slavic centres and Mirano in left ventricular mass index (LVMI) (94.9 vs 80.4 g/m2), sodium excretion (229 vs 186 mmol/day), and the prevalence of the AGT -6A (55.7 vs 40.6%) and -532T (16.8 vs 9.4%) alleles. In population-based as well as in family-based analyses, we observed positive associations of LVMI and mean wall thickness (MWT) with the -532T allele in Slavic, but not in Italian male offspring. Furthermore, in Slavic male offspring, LVMI and MWT were significantly higher in carriers of the -532T/-6A haplotype than in those with the -532C/-6G or -532C/-6A allele combinations. Abstract: RIVM rapport:Het RIVM heeft de zogeheten interventiewaarden voor bodem en grondwater geëvalueerd. Dit is noodzakelijk om nieuwe wetenschappelijke kennis en modelverbeteringen in de afleiding van deze getallen te verwerken, en daarmee de kwaliteit van de normen te handhaven. Interventiewaarden zijn landelijke bodemnormen die gebruikt worden om aan te geven dat bodems die in het verleden verontreinigd zijn geraakt, volgens de Wet Bodemkwaliteit moeten worden gesaneerd. De interventiewaarden zijn zowel voor de bodem als voor het grondwater bepaald. Voor beide is bekeken bij welke concentraties risico's voor het ecosysteem en voor de mens ontstaan. De strengste waarde bepaalt de hoogte van de interventiewaarde. Aanvullend is onderzocht wanneer ecosystemen aan te hoge concentraties blootstaan doordat een stof in de voedselketen ophoopt, de zogenoemde doorvergiftiging. In de jaren negentig zijn voor het eerst de interventiewaarden van vier groepen stoffen in delen (zogeheten tranches) afgeleid. Van 66 stoffen uit de 2e, 3e, en 4e tranche moeten de interventiewaarden worden geëvalueerd. Vanwege een beperkt tijdbestek zijn hieruit alleen de 16 meest urgente stoffen geselecteerd, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze in de praktijk vaak worden aangetroffen. De 16 stoffen zijn: antimoon, barium, boor, selenium, thallium, tin (anorganisch), vanadium, een drietal orgaotins, cis- en trans-dichlooretheen, vrije cyaniden, thiocyanaat, chloride en sulfaat. Voor drie van deze stoffen is de in deze rapportage voorgestelde interventiewaarde strenger geworden en voor vier stoffen is de voorgestelde interventiewaarde minder streng geworden. Voor enkele stoffen zijn de voorgestelde interventiewaarden niet veranderd. Voor de overige stoffen waarvoor nog geen interventiewaarde was afgeleid, is nu een eerste voorstel gedaan., RIVM has evaluated the so-called Intervention Values for soil and groundwater. This evaluation is necessary in order to implement new scientific knowledge and model improvements in the derivation of these values and therefore to maintain the quality of the standards. Intervention Values are national soil quality standards which are used to determine seriously contaminated sites. Seriously contaminated sites have to be remediated according to the Soil Protection Act. The Intervention Values are derived for both soil as well as groundwater. For the derivation of Intervention Values, the concentration in soil and groundwater is determined for which unacceptable risks for humans and the ecosystem exist. The most stringent value of both determines the new intervention value. Additionally, RIVM determined situations in which organisms are exposed to high concentrations of a compound through bioaccumalution in the foodchain, the socalled secondary poisoning. The first Intervention Values were derived in the nineties for the first of four series of compounds. For 66 compounds from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th series of compounds revision of the Intervention Values is currently needed. Due to limits in time, 16 most urgent compounds were selected. These are, for example, compounds that are often found at contaminated sites. The 16 compounds that have been evaluated are antimony, barium, boron, selenium, thallium, tin (inorganic), vanadium, three organotin compounds, cis- and transdichlororethene, free cyanide, thiocyanate, chloride and sulphate. For three of these compounds the derived proposals for Intervention Values in this report have become more stringent and the proposals for Intervention Values for four other compounds are stated as less stringent. For several compounds, the derived proposals for Intervention Values were similar to the current Intervention Values. For the remaining compounds which did not have an intervention value yet, a new proposal was derived.
