Implementing effective conservation measures to manage migratory populations is challenging, especially in a relatively inaccessible dynamic environment such as the ocean. With limited financial and human resources, efforts must be intelligently prioritized to achieve conservation success and reduce uncertainties of conservation efforts. The southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) hosts some of the world’s most important breeding grounds for the Critically Endangered hawksbill turtle Eretmochelys imbricata. However, knowledge gaps remain about the movement patterns of this species. Between 2007 and 2022, we deployed 17 satellite tags onto hawksbill turtles from scattered locations in the SWIO: 16 nesting females—Granitic Islands, Seychelles (n = 9); north Madagascar (n = 5); Moheli, Comoros (n = 1); Juan de Nova, Terres australes et antarctiques françaises (n = 1)—and 1 female bycaught in fisheries (east Madagascar). We found strong variability in migratory movements amongst individuals, particularly in terms of distance and movement persistence. Detailed analysis of movement persistence reveals that these individuals behave differently in neritic and oceanic habitats, with a lower movement persistence in neritic habitats. We identified a total of 12 foraging areas scattered throughout the SWIO, both in coastal and open-sea neritic habitats. These results reinforce the need to consider the importance of neritic habitats, for both migration and foraging, in conservation policies. The quantification of the degree of migratory variability is particularly important to developing conservation plans and strategies at both the national and international level, including the delineation of regional management units (RMUs) in the Indian Ocean.

Abstract The PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway lies at the confluence of signaling pathways in which various components are subjected to activating genetic alterations in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), thus contributing to oncogenesis. Three AKT isoforms exist in humans. However, whether one isoform predominates in AML remains unknown. This study reveals that AKT3 behaves very distinctly than AKT1 or AKT2 in both normal myeloid differentiation and AML. During normal differentiation, AKT3 is preferentially expressed in hematopoietic stem cells whilst AKT1 becomes preferentially expressed as cells differentiate into granulocytes or monocytes. AKT2 expression remains unchanged. In AML, AKT3 expression varies widely among patient samples and is counterintuitively high in mature/monocytic leukemia. Furthermore, a low level of AKT3 expression is strongly correlated to genetic alterations associated with a better outcome (NPM1 mutations and RUNX1-RUNX1T1 translocation), while a high level is correlated to alterations associated to a bad outcome (RUNX1 mutations; and SRSF2, U2AF1, SF3B1, ASXL1 and BCOR mutations occurring frequently in MDS and MPN). Consistently, a high AKT3 expression level appears as a very strong predictor of poor survival. Curiously, although modestly varying among AML samples, a high AKT1 expression shows in contrast as a strong predictor of a better patient outcome. These data suggest that AKT3 and AKT1 expressions have strong, yet opposite, prognostic values.

Abstract Background The aim was to analyse whether scoliosis or windswept hip deformity (WSH) occurs first for children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods This longitudinal cohort study using data from 1994 − 2020 (26 years) involved 41,600 measurements of 4148 children (2419 [58.3%] boys) with CP born 1990 − 2018 and registered into the Swedish CP follow-up program. Children were followed from a mean age of 2.8 [SD 1.4] years, until they developed either scoliosis or WSH or were removed at surgery. Results WSH developed first in 16.6% of the children (mean age 8.1 [SD 5.0] years), and scoliosis in 8.1% (mean age 8.1 [SD 4.9] years). The incidence of WSH was higher than scoliosis across all levels I–V of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), both sexes, and for those with dyskinetic (20.0%) or spastic (17.0%) CP. The incidence of scoliosis was highest (19.8%) and developed earliest in children with GMFCS level V (mean age 5.5 [SD 3.5] years), and in children with dyskinetic (17.9%) CP (mean age 7.0 [SD 4.7] years). Conclusions WSH presents earlier than scoliosis in most children with CP. Children with higher GMFCS level or dyskinetic CP are more likely to develop these deformities at a younger age.

Methane emissions from natural gas systems are increasingly scrutinized, and accurate reporting requires quantification of site- and source-level measurement. We evaluate the performance of 10 available state-of-the-art CH4 emission quantification approaches against a blind controlled-release experiment at an inerted natural gas compressor station in 2021. The experiment consisted of 17 blind 2 h releases at a single exhaust point or multiple simultaneous ones. The controlled releases covered a range of methane flow rates from 0.01 to 50 kg h−1. Measurement platforms included aircraft, drones, trucks, vans, ground-based stations, and handheld systems. Herewith, we compare their respective strengths, weaknesses, and potential complementarity depending on the emission rates and atmospheric conditions. Most systems were able to quantify the releases within an order of magnitude. The level of errors from the different systems was not significantly influenced by release rates larger than 0.1 kg h−1, with much poorer results for the 0.01 kg h−1 release. It was found that handheld optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras underestimated the emissions. In contrast, the “site-level” systems, relying on atmospheric dispersion, tended to overestimate the emission rates. We assess the dependence of emission quantification performance on key parameters such as wind speed, deployment constraints, and measurement duration. At the low wind speeds encountered (below 2 m s−1), the experiments did not reveal a significant dependence on wind speed. The ability to quantify individual sources degraded during multiple-source releases. Compliance with the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership's (OGMP 2.0) highest level of reporting may require a combination of the specific advantages of each measurement technique and will depend on reconciliation approaches. Self-reported uncertainties were either not available or were based on the standard deviation in a series of independent realizations or fixed values from expert judgment or theoretical considerations. For most systems, the overall relative errors estimated in this study are higher than self-reported uncertainties.

More than 4700 nominal family-group names (including names for fossils and ichnotaxa) are nomenclaturally available in the order Coleoptera. Since each family-group name is based on the concept of its type genus, we argue that the stability of names used for the classification of beetles depends on accurate nomenclatural data for each type genus. Following a review of taxonomic literature, with a focus on works that potentially contain type species designations, we provide a synthesis of nomenclatural data associated with the type genus of each nomenclaturally available family-group name in Coleoptera. For each type genus the author(s), year of publication, and page number are given as well as its current status (i.e., whether treated as valid or not) and current classification. Information about the type species of each type genus and the type species fixation (i.e., fixed originally or subsequently, and if subsequently, by whom) is also given. The original spelling of the family-group name that is based on each type genus is included, with its author(s), year, and stem. We append a list of nomenclaturally available family-group names presented in a classification scheme. Because of the importance of the Principle of Priority in zoological nomenclature, we provide information on the date of publication of the references cited in this work, when known. Several nomenclatural issues emerged during the course of this work. We therefore appeal to the community of coleopterists to submit applications to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (henceforth “Commission”) in order to permanently resolve some of the problems outlined here. The global antimicrobial resistance crisis has been the driver of several international strategies on antimicrobial stewardship. For their implementation on field level, the veterinary sector encounters several specific challenges and in particular: (i) a shortage of experts in key disciplines related to antimicrobial stewardship, (ii) a lack of evidence-based antimicrobial treatment guidelines, and (iii) inferior diagnostic tests available compared to human medicine. The present white paper describes how the COST Action ENOVAT (the European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment, CA18217), comprising 332 persons from 51 countries, worked towards solutions to these challenges. Initially, surveys were conducted to explore the present state in Europe in terms of existing antimicrobial use guidelines and microbiology practices performed. Concurrently, various research activities were launched to optimize diagnostics, including development of epidemiological cut-offs, clinical breakpoints and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry interpretive criteria. Also, guidelines drafting groups working towards evidence-based antimicrobial treatment guidelines for six conditions in food-producing and companion animals were established. The processes and outcomes, also in terms of capacity building, are summarized in this white paper where emphasis is placed on sustainability of the activities. Although several ENOVAT initiatives and spin-off projects will continue beyond the Action, we recommend that a new European veterinary research agenda is launched focusing on research and funding leading to long-term impacts on veterinary antimicrobial use.

BackgroundChatGPT was not intended for use in health care, but it has potential benefits that depend on end-user understanding and acceptability, which is where health care students become crucial. There is still a limited amount of research in this area. ObjectiveThe primary aim of our study was to assess the frequency of ChatGPT use, the perceived level of knowledge, the perceived risks associated with its use, and the ethical issues, as well as attitudes toward the use of ChatGPT in the context of education in the field of health. In addition, we aimed to examine whether there were differences across groups based on demographic variables. The second part of the study aimed to assess the association between the frequency of use, the level of perceived knowledge, the level of risk perception, and the level of perception of ethics as predictive factors for participants’ attitudes toward the use of ChatGPT. MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to June 2023 encompassing students of medicine, nursing, dentistry, nutrition, and laboratory science across the Americas. The study used descriptive analysis, chi-square tests, and ANOVA to assess statistical significance across different categories. The study used several ordinal logistic regression models to analyze the impact of predictive factors (frequency of use, perception of knowledge, perception of risk, and ethics perception scores) on attitude as the dependent variable. The models were adjusted for gender, institution type, major, and country. Stata was used to conduct all the analyses. ResultsOf 2661 health care students, 42.99% (n=1144) were unaware of ChatGPT. The median score of knowledge was “minimal” (median 2.00, IQR 1.00-3.00). Most respondents (median 2.61, IQR 2.11-3.11) regarded ChatGPT as neither ethical nor unethical. Most participants (median 3.89, IQR 3.44-4.34) “somewhat agreed” that ChatGPT (1) benefits health care settings, (2) provides trustworthy data, (3) is a helpful tool for clinical and educational medical information access, and (4) makes the work easier. In total, 70% (7/10) of people used it for homework. As the perceived knowledge of ChatGPT increased, there was a stronger tendency with regard to having a favorable attitude toward ChatGPT. Higher ethical consideration perception ratings increased the likelihood of considering ChatGPT as a source of trustworthy health care information (odds ratio [OR] 1.620, 95% CI 1.498-1.752), beneficial in medical issues (OR 1.495, 95% CI 1.452-1.539), and useful for medical literature (OR 1.494, 95% CI 1.426-1.564; P

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

La voie prônée informellement dans le milieu des études autochtones est la recherche collaborative, mais est-elle toujours possible?

Abstract Beyond ecological and health impacts, invasive alien plant species can generate indirect and direct costs, notably through reduced agricultural yields, restoration, and management of the invaded environment. Acacia dealbata and Ailanthus altissima are invasive plant species that cause particularly significant damage to the railway network in the Mediterranean area. The allelopathic properties of Mediterranean plant species could be used as nature‐based solutions to slow down the spread of such invasive plant species along railway borders. In this context, a mesocosm experiment was set‐up: (i) to test the potential allelopathic effects of Cistus ladanifer, Cistus albidus, and Cotinus coggygria leaf aqueous extracts on seed germination and seedling growth of A. dealbata and A. altissima; (ii) to evaluate whether these effects depend on the extract dose; and finally, (iii) to estimate whether these effects are modified by soil amendment. Leaf aqueous extracts of the three native plant species showed negative effects on both seed germination and seedling growth of the two invasive species. Our results show that the presence of allelochemicals induces a delay in seed germination (e.g., A. dealbata germination lasted up to 269% longer in the presence of high‐dose leaf aqueous extracts of C. coggygria), which can lead to a decrease in individual recruitment. They also highlight a decrease in seedling growth (e.g., high‐dose C. coggygria leaf aqueous extracts induced a 26% decrease in A. dealbata radicle growth), which can alter the competitiveness of invasive species for resource access. Our results also highlight that compost addition limits the inhibitory effect of native Mediterranean plants on the germination of invasive alien plants, suggesting that soil organic matter content can counteract allelopathic effects on invasive alien plants. Thus, our findings revealed that the allelopathic potential of certain Mediterranean plant species could be a useful tool to manage invasive plant species.

Abstract Rationale It is unclear how each individual asthma symptom is associated with asthma diagnosis or control. Objectives To assess the performance of individual asthma symptoms in the identification of patients with asthma and their association with asthma control. Methods In this cross‐sectional study, we assessed real‐world data using the MASK‐air® app. We compared the frequency of occurrence of five asthma symptoms (dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue and night symptoms, as assessed by the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test [CARAT] questionnaire) in patients with probable, possible or no current asthma. We calculated the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of each symptom, and assessed the association between each symptom and asthma control (measured using the e‐DASTHMA score). Results were validated in a sample of patients with a physician‐established diagnosis of asthma. Measurement and Main Results We included 951 patients (2153 CARAT assessments), with 468 having probable asthma, 166 possible asthma and 317 no evidence of asthma. Wheezing displayed the highest specificity (90.5%) and positive predictive value (90.8%). In patients with probable asthma, dyspnea and chest tightness were more strongly associated with asthma control than other symptoms. Dyspnea was the symptom with the highest sensitivity (76.1%) and the one consistently associated with the control of asthma as assessed by e‐DASTHMA. Consistent results were observed when assessing patients with a physician‐made diagnosis of asthma. Conclusions Wheezing and chest tightness were the asthma symptoms with the highest specificity for asthma diagnosis, while dyspnea displayed the highest sensitivity and strongest association with asthma control.

Abstract Recommendations for or against the use of interventions need to consider both desirable and undesirable effects as well as patients' values and preferences (V&P). In the decision‐making context, patients' V&P represent the relative importance people place on the outcomes resulting from a decision. Therefore, the balance between desirable and undesirable effects from an intervention should depend not only on the difference between benefits and harms but also on the value that patients place on them. V&P are therefore one of the criteria to be considered when formulating guideline recommendations in the Evidence‐to‐Decision framework developed by the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) Working Group. Patients' V&P may be quantified through utilities, which can be elicited using direct methods (e.g., standard gamble or time trade‐off) or indirect methods (using validated instruments to measure health‐related quality of life, such as EQ‐5D). The GRADE approach recommends conducting systematic reviews to summarise all the available evidence and assess the degree of certainty on V&P. In this article, we discuss the importance of considering patients' V&P and provide examples of how they are considered in the 2024 person‐centred Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines.

BackgroundTo mitigate safety concerns, regulatory agencies must make informed decisions regarding drug usage and adverse drug events (ADEs). The primary pharmacovigilance data stem from spontaneous reports by health care professionals. However, underreporting poses a notable challenge within the current system. Explorations into alternative sources, including electronic patient records and social media, have been undertaken. Nevertheless, social media’s potential remains largely untapped in real-world scenarios. ObjectiveThe challenge faced by regulatory agencies in using social media is primarily attributed to the absence of suitable tools to support decision makers. An effective tool should enable access to information via a graphical user interface, presenting data in a user-friendly manner rather than in their raw form. This interface should offer various visualization options, empowering users to choose representations that best convey the data and facilitate informed decision-making. Thus, this study aims to assess the potential of integrating social media into pharmacovigilance and enhancing decision-making with this novel data source. To achieve this, our objective was to develop and assess a pipeline that processes data from the extraction of web forum posts to the generation of indicators and alerts within a visual and interactive environment. The goal was to create a user-friendly tool that enables regulatory authorities to make better-informed decisions effectively. MethodsTo enhance pharmacovigilance efforts, we have devised a pipeline comprising 4 distinct modules, each independently editable, aimed at efficiently analyzing health-related French web forums. These modules were (1) web forums’ posts extraction, (2) web forums’ posts annotation, (3) statistics and signal detection algorithm, and (4) a graphical user interface (GUI). We showcase the efficacy of the GUI through an illustrative case study involving the introduction of the new formula of Levothyrox in France. This event led to a surge in reports to the French regulatory authority. ResultsBetween January 1, 2017, and February 28, 2021, a total of 2,081,296 posts were extracted from 23 French web forums. These posts contained 437,192 normalized drug-ADE couples, annotated with the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification and Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA). The analysis of the Levothyrox new formula revealed a notable pattern. In August 2017, there was a sharp increase in posts related to this medication on social media platforms, which coincided with a substantial uptick in reports submitted by patients to the national regulatory authority during the same period. ConclusionsWe demonstrated that conducting quantitative analysis using the GUI is straightforward and requires no coding. The results aligned with prior research and also offered potential insights into drug-related matters. Our hypothesis received partial confirmation because the final users were not involved in the evaluation process. Further studies, concentrating on ergonomics and the impact on professionals within regulatory agencies, are imperative for future research endeavors. We emphasized the versatility of our approach and the seamless interoperability between different modules over the performance of individual modules. Specifically, the annotation module was integrated early in the development process and could undergo substantial enhancement by leveraging contemporary techniques rooted in the Transformers architecture. Our pipeline holds potential applications in health surveillance by regulatory agencies or pharmaceutical companies, aiding in the identification of safety concerns. Moreover, it could be used by research teams for retrospective analysis of events.

IntroductionThe administration of antibiotics can expose the digestive microbiota of humans and animals to sub-inhibitory concentrations, potentially favouring the selection of resistant bacteria. The minimal selective concentration (MSC) is a key indicator to understand this process. The MSC is defined as the lowest concentration of an antibiotic that promotes the growth of a resistant strain over a susceptible isogenic strain. It represents the lower limit of the sub-minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) selective window, where resistant mutants can be selected. Previous studies focused on determining the MSC under standard culture conditions, whereas our research aimed to determine the MSC in a model that approximates in vivo conditions.MethodsWe investigated the MSC of oxytetracycline (OTC) in Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB) and sterilised intestinal contents (SIC) from the jejunum, caecum and rectum (faeces) of pigs, using two isogenic strains of Escherichia coli (one susceptible and one resistant to OTC). Additionally, the MIC of OTC against the susceptible strain was determined to assess the upper limit of the sub-MIC selective window.ResultsOur study took a novel approach, and the results indicated that MIC and MSC values were lower in MHB than in SIC. In the latter, these values varied depending on the intestinal segment, with distal compartments exhibiting higher MIC and MSC values. Moreover, the sub-MIC selective window of OTC in SIC narrowed from the jejunum to the rectum, with a significantly closer MSC to MIC in faecal SIC.DiscussionThe results suggest that OTC binds to digestive contents, reducing the fraction of free OTC. However, binding alone does not fully explain our results, and interactions between bacteria and intestinal contents may play a role. Furthermore, our findings provide initial estimates of low concentrations facilitating resistance selection in the gut. Finally, this research enhances the understanding of antimicrobial resistance selection, emphasising the intricate interplay between antibiotics and intestinal content composition in assessing the risk of resistance development in the gut.

Abstract Background Several strategies for identifying biologically implausible values in longitudinal anthropometric data have recently been proposed, but the suitability of these strategies for large population datasets needs to be better understood. This study evaluated the impact of removing population outliers and the additional value of identifying and removing longitudinal outliers on the trajectories of length/height and weight and on the prevalence of child growth indicators in a large longitudinal dataset of child growth data. Methods Length/height and weight measurements of children aged 0 to 59 months from the Brazilian Food and Nutrition Surveillance System were analyzed. Population outliers were identified using z-scores from the World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts. After identifying and removing population outliers, residuals from linear mixed-effects models were used to flag longitudinal outliers. The following cutoffs for residuals were tested to flag those: -3/+3, -4/+4, -5/+5, -6/+6. The selected child growth indicators included length/height-for-age z-scores and weight-for-age z-scores, classified according to the WHO charts. Results The dataset included 50,154,738 records from 10,775,496 children. Boys and girls had 5.74% and 5.31% of length/height and 5.19% and 4.74% of weight values flagged as population outliers, respectively. After removing those, the percentage of longitudinal outliers varied from 0.02% (+6) to 1.47% (+3) for length/height and from 0.07 to 1.44% for weight in boys. In girls, the percentage of longitudinal outliers varied from 0.01 to 1.50% for length/height and from 0.08 to 1.45% for weight. The initial removal of population outliers played the most substantial role in the growth trajectories as it was the first step in the cleaning process, while the additional removal of longitudinal outliers had lower influence on those, regardless of the cutoff adopted. The prevalence of the selected indicators were also affected by both population and longitudinal (to a lesser extent) outliers. Conclusions Although both population and longitudinal outliers can detect biologically implausible values in child growth data, removing population outliers seemed more relevant in this large administrative dataset, especially in calculating summary statistics. However, both types of outliers need to be identified and removed for the proper evaluation of trajectories.

We investigate the causes of the renewed growth of atmospheric methane (CH4) amount fractions after 2007 by using variational inverse modeling with a three-dimensional chemistry-transport model. Together with CH4 amount fraction data, we use the additional information provided by observations of CH4 isotopic compositions (13C : 12C and D : H) to better differentiate between the emission categories compared to the differentiation achieved by assimilating CH4 amount fractions alone. Our system allows us to optimize either the CH4 emissions only or both the emissions and the source isotopic signatures (δsource(13C,CH4) and δsource(D,CH4)) of five emission categories. Consequently, we also assess, for the first time, the influence of applying random errors to both emissions and source signatures in an inversion framework. As the computational cost of a single inversion is high at present, the methodology applied to prescribe source signature uncertainties is simple, so it can serve as a basis for future work. Here, we investigate the post-2007 increase in atmospheric CH4 using the differences between 2002–2007 and 2007–2014. When random uncertainties in source isotopic signatures are accounted for, our results suggest that the post-2007 increase (here defined using the two periods 2002–2007 and 2007–2014) in atmospheric CH4 was caused by increases in emissions from (1) fossil sources (51 % of the net increase in emissions) and (2) agriculture and waste sources (49 %), which were slightly compensated for by a small decrease in biofuel- and biomass-burning emissions. The conclusions are very similar when assimilating CH4 amount fractions alone, suggesting either that random uncertainties in source signatures are too large at present to impose any additional constraint on the inversion problem or that we overestimate these uncertainties in our setups. On the other hand, if the source isotopic signatures are considered to be perfectly known (i.e., ignoring their uncertainties), the relative contributions of the different emission categories are significantly changed. Compared to the inversion where random uncertainties are accounted for, fossil emissions and biofuel- and biomass-burning emissions are increased by 24 % and 41 %, respectively, on average over 2002–2014. Wetland emissions and agricultural and waste emissions are decreased by 14 % and 7 %, respectively. Also, in this case, our results suggest that the increase in CH4 amount fractions after 2007 (despite a large decrease in biofuel- and biomass-burning emissions) was caused by increases in emissions from (1) fossil fuels (46 %), (2) agriculture and waste (37 %), and (3) wetlands (17 %). Additionally, some other sensitivity tests have been performed. While the prescribed interannual variability in OH can have a large impact on the results, assimilating δ(D,CH4) observations in addition to the other constraints has only a minor influence. Using all the information derived from these tests, the net increase in emissions is still primarily attributed to fossil sources (50 ± 3 %) and agriculture and waste sources (47 ± 5 %). Although our methods have room for improvement, these results illustrate the full capacity of our inversion framework, which can be used to consistently account for random uncertainties in both emissions and source signatures.

À partir des années 1970, plusieurs groupes de chercheurs, dont ceux qui fondèrent la revue Natures Sciences Sociétés, ont eu l’idée qu’il était nécessaire, pour répondre à la question environnementale, de dépasser les frontières disciplinaires. Nous proposons de comparer ici trois de ces communautés interdisciplinaires que nous qualifions de communautés épistémiques – l’Économie écologique, la Résilience des systèmes sociaux et écologiques, et la Political Ecology –, en présentant leurs trajectoires, les dispositifs qui les structurent et l’appréhension de leur diversité interne. Nous montrons que, si toutes les trois suivent plus ou moins la même temporalité, elles partagent le même diagnostic sur la nature de la crise environnementale mais appréhendent différemment les débats internes quant aux moyens de résoudre cette crise. Nos analyses montrent différentes manières de faire de l’interdisciplinarité : la Résilience des systèmes sociaux et écologiques constitue une forme de communauté épistémique à la fois souple et structurée, quand la Political Ecology est traversée de questions sur l’utilité même de la science et son rapport au politique et à la critique. L’Économie écologique paraît pour sa part tiraillée entre plusieurs courants, qui se distinguent selon leur rapport à l’orthodoxie économique.

Abstract We present a self-consistent method based on first-principles calculations to determine the magnetic ground state of materials, regardless of their dimensionality. Our methodology is founded on satisfying the stability conditions derived from the linear spin wave theory (LSWT) by optimizing the magnetic structure iteratively. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by successfully predicting the experimental magnetic structures of NiO, FePS3, FeP, MnF2, FeCl2, and CuO. In each case, we compared our results with available experimental data and existing theoretical calculations reported in the literature. Finally, we discuss the validity of the method and the possible extensions.

Abstract Conifers are long-lived and slow-evolving, thus requiring effective defences against their fast-evolving insect natural enemies. The copy number variation (CNV) of two key acetophenone biosynthesis genes Ugt5/Ugt5b and βglu-1 may provide a plausible mechanism underlying the constitutively variable defence in white spruce (Picea glauca) against its primary defoliator, spruce budworm. This study develops a long-insert sequence capture probe set (Picea_hung_p1.0) for quantifying copy number of βglu-1-like, Ugt5-like genes and single-copy genes on 38 Norway spruce (Picea abies) and 40 P. glauca individuals from eight and nine provenances across Europe and North America respectively. We developed local assemblies (Piabi_c1.0 and Pigla_c.1.0), full-length transcriptomes (PIAB_v1 and PIGL_v1), and gene models to characterise the diversity of βglu-1 and Ugt5 genes. We observed very large copy numbers of βglu-1, with up to 381 copies in a single P. glauca individual. We observed among-provenance CNV of βglu-1 in P. glauca but not P. abies. Ugt5b was predominantly single-copy in both species. This study generates critical hypotheses for testing the emergence and mechanism of extreme CNV, the dosage effect on phenotype, and the varying copy number of genes with the same pathway. We demonstrate new approaches to overcome experimental challenges in genomic research in conifer defences.

Abstract Emissions from fossil fuel exploitation are a leading contributor to global anthropogenic methane emissions, but are highly uncertain. The lack of reliable estimates hinders monitoring of the progress on pledges towards methane reductions. Here we analyze methane emissions from exploitation of coal, oil and gas for major producing nations across a suite of bottom-up inventories and global inversions. Larger disagreement in emissions exists for the oil/gas sector across the inventories compared to coal, arising mostly from disparate data sources for emission factors. Moreover, emissions reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change are lower than other bottom-up and inversion estimates, with many countries lacking reporting in the past decades. Finally, comparison with previous global inversions, revealed a strong influence of the prior inventory on the inferred sub-sectoral emissions magnitude. This study highlights the need to improve consensus on the methodological inputs among the bottom-up inventories in order to obtain more consistent inverse modelling results at the sub-sectoral level.

Green spaces and nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly considered by land-use planning policies to respond to the multiple challenges related to sustainable development. The multiple benefits brought by NBS make the use of multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) essential to optimally balance their use. MCDA offers a catalog of methods allowing to structure problems with multiple objectives and to help adopt the optimal solution. However, NBS planning is a recent discipline and research is still ongoing to make this practice more common. We carried out a critical literature review on MCDA-NBS tools and practices, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method on the Web of Science database. We selected 124 papers on the subject between 2000 and 2022. We present a state-of-the-art MCDA approach for NBS and green space planning by looking at where these practices are applied, why and how this process is conducted, and who is involved in it. We found that studies are usually conducted in the global North on a single case study with the help of experts involved in the criteria weighting phase and the help of GIS MCDA tools often integrating a direct ranking method or the AHP method. HIGHLIGHTS MCDA methods help to consider all NBS benefits and evaluate planning alternatives.; Environmental and social criteria are more represented than economic and technical ones.; Stakeholders are rarely involved throughout the entire MCDA process.; MCDA tools for NBS planning are rarely accessible and adaptable to various contexts.; MCDA processes are mainly conducted in countries of the Global North.;
