Abstract

The current endeavour focuses on the notion of positive versus negative polarity preference of verbs for their direct objects. This preference has to be distinguished from a verb's own prior polarity - for the same verb, these two properties might even be inverse. Polarity preferences of verbs are extracted on the basis of a large and dependency- parsed corpus by means of statistical measures. We observed verbs with a relatively clear positive or negative polarity preference, as well as cases of verbs where positive and negative polarity preference is balanced (we call these bipolar-preference verbs). Given clear-cut polarity preferences of a verb, nouns, whose polarity is yet unknown, can now be classified. We reached a lower bound of 81% precision in our experiments, whereas the upper bound goes up to 92%.

Joost is a question answering system for Dutch which makes extensive use of dependency relations. It answers questions either by table look-up, or by searching for answers in paragraphs returned by IR. Syntactic similarity is used to identify and rank potential answers. Abstract

We present a wide-coverage computational parser and grammar for Dutch. The grammar is developed within the tradition of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar and provides detailed and linguistically motivated accounts for most syntactic phenomena in Dutch. A broad overview of the grammar and lexicon is given, as well as a more detailed discussion of the analysis of comparatives and partitive constructions. Parsing and disambiguation uses statistical information, which is derived in part from a syntactically annotated treebank. The accuracy and coverage of the grammar is evaluated on representative portions of the tree-bank and a number of problematic constructions for the current grammar are identified. Abstract

We argue that grammatical analysis is a viable alternative to concept spotting for processing spoken input in a practical spoken dialogue system. We discuss the structure of the grammar, and a model for robust parsing which combines linguistic sources of information and statistical sources of information. We discuss test results suggesting that grammatical processing allows fast and accurate processing of spoken input.

Abstract

Information extraction (IE) culls information from text including relations, our focus here, such as head-of (Sergej-Brin, Google). The Espresso algorithm was developed to do this (Pantel & Pennacchiotti 2006), and we extend their work here first by using as input not raw text but rather syntactic analyses derived from the text, and second by applying the algorithm to Dutch. This required parsing hundreds of millions of words of text, which was regarded as infeasible only ten years ago.
