Abstract

To prevent air pollution and achieve air quality regulations, it is essential to develop analytical techniques that can determine the concentration of metals in aerosol particles, both in the gas phase and after collection onto filters. Total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (TXRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) are emerging as complementary techniques for determining the elemental composition of aerosol particles. The accuracy of their results relies on calibration methods based on aerosol and multi-element filters representative of the on-line measurement conditions and particulate collection for off-line measurement, respectively. In this paper we propose a novel methodology for characterizing nebulization generated aerosol particles dispersion and deposition by means of TXRF to assess the use of an aerosol generator to produce calibration samples for LIBS and TXRF analysis. Particles concentration and size distribution of the aerosol produced by nebulizing a Cu salt aqueous solution are measured inside a glove box modifying the production parameters and collecting the corresponding particulate deposited on reflectors. The most stable conditions are observed at average flow rate and selected for studying the aerosol spatial distribution. The Cu mass collected on reflectors positioned at a fixed distance and radial geometry with respect to the nozzle exit is measured by TXRF and increases linearly with time. Results suggest that this experimental configuration could be used to realize calibration samples for TXRF analysis representative of particulate deposition. The use of these aerosols as LIBS calibration samples could lead to significant errors due to the observed flow asymmetry. Abstract

Recycling lithium-ion batteries is crucial for the environment and the sustainability of primary resources. In this paper, we report on the characterization of two grades of black mass from spent lithium-ion batteries (with typical lithium–nickel–manganese–cobalt oxide cathode compositions) and their behavior during heating trials. This study paves the way for optimizing lithium-ion battery recycling processes by fully characterizing black mass samples before and after heating. A gas release under pyrolytic conditions was detected using a multicomponent mass spectrometer and included dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, oxygenated hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons, and other miscellaneous gases. This can be attributed to the evaporation of volatile organic compounds, conductive salt, organic polyvinylidene fluoride binder, and an organic separator such as polypropylene. Thermal treatment led to the partial decomposition of the binder into char and newly formed fluorine cuboids. The compaction of the cathode decreased, but the remaining binder limited recycling processes. By heating the black mass samples to 900 °C, the intensity of the X-ray diffraction graphitic carbon peak decreased, and the lithium metal oxides were reduced to their corresponding metals. Abstract

Many organizations in Europe collect data and perform research on municipal solid waste and the secondary raw materials that can be produced from them through recycling, urban mining, or landfill mining. However, the information generated and presented thereby is often highly aggregated, while research activities are many a time isolated. Both reduce the usability of the data and information generated. In order to better structure the knowledge generation on secondary raw materials production from municipal solid waste, we suggest to learn from the traditional raw materials mining industry how to perform an integrated assessment and reporting of anthropogenic resources. This is exemplarily shown for the case of the anthropogenic resource municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash and air-pollution control residues. A network of expert institutions from countries throughout Europe was build up to compile the information on legal and technological aspects for the recovery of different secondary raw materials from these residues, including construction minerals, metals, and salts. We highlight in our article the strength of the combined knowledge of an expert network not only on legal and technological, but also local and site-specific aspects of the recovery of secondary raw materials. By doing so, we hope to kick-off a discussion for how to organize and implement a structure for a better management of knowledge on anthropogenic resources, in order to provide a sustainable supply of secondary raw materials for a greener and more circular economy.

129. Characterization of a polymeric adsorbed coating for DNA microarray glass slides

Abstract

A new method was developed to covalently attach target molecules onto the surface of glass substrates such as microwell plates, beads, tubes, and microscope slides, for hybridization assays with fluorescent targets. The innovative concept introduced by this work is to physically adsorb onto underivatized glass surfaces a functional copolymer, able to graft amino-modified DNA molecules. The polymer, obtained by radical copolymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, N-acryloyloxysuccinimide, and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, copoly(DMA-NASMAPS), self-adsorbs onto the glass surface very quickly, typically in 5-30 min. The film, formed on the surface, bears active esters, which react with amino-modified DNA targets. The surface layer is stable in an aqueous buffer containing various additives (SDS, urea, salt), even at boiling temperature. It should be emphasized that the coating is formed by the immersion of glass slides in a diluted aqueous solution of the polymer. Therefore, the procedure is fast, inexpensive, robust, and reliable, and it does not require time-consuming glass pretreatments. Slides, coated with copoly(DMA-NAS-MAPS), were profitably used as substrates for the preparation of low-density DNA microarrays. The density and the thickness of the films were evaluated by X-ray reflectivity measurements whereas the extent of reaction of functional groups with DNA molecules was determined by a functional test. The experiments indicate that half of the active groups present on the surface reacts with oligonucleotide probes.
