101. Influence of Temperature on Bacterial Infection of the Hen's Egg

Abstract

Temperature of incubation had a marked effect on infection of eggs in which the air cells had been inoculated with a washed suspension of Serratia marcescens. There was no evidence of bacterial multiplication or spoilage in eggs held at 10 C for 42 days. Multiplication occurred in the shell membranes of eggs held at 30 or at 37 C when the yolk made contact with these membranes, and continued in the contents of the egg, at which time the first signs of spoilage appeared. In a few eggs, very large populations were present in the shell membranes and in the albumen. In eggs inoculated with Pseudomonas fluorescensand held at 10 C, bacterial multiplication occurred in the shell membranes in the first 7 days of incubation. These populations did not appear to change in size in the 7- to 14-day period of incubation. Renewed multiplication and concomitant spoilage of the contents was observed in many of the eggs thereafter.

Abstract

Free circulating DNA, which is thought to be derived from the primary tumour, can be detected in the blood of patients with cancer. Detection of genetic and epigenetic alteration in this tumour DNA offers a potential source of development of prognostic and predictive biomarkers for cancer. One such change is DNA methylation of the promotor region of tumour suppressor genes. This causes down regulation of tumour suppressor gene expression, a frequent event in carcinogenesis. Hypermethylation of the promotor region of a number of genes has been detected in many tumour types and more recently these changes have been detected in circulating tumour DNA. This review will summarise the literature detailing DNA methylation in circulating tumour DNA and discuss some of the current controversies and technical challenges facing its use as a potential biomarker for cancer.

Abstract

International audience; X-ray fluorescence, grain-size and oxygen and carbon stable isotope measurements of a 33 m long piston core, recovered from the Pen Duick drift located at the foot of the prominent Pen Duick Escarpment (Atlantic Moroccan margin), are combined to decipher past oceanographic conditions. The data indicate that, similar to the northern Gulf of Cádiz, the Azores Front exerts a major control on the palaeoclimatology of the region. Contrasting the northern Gulf of Cádiz, where Mediterranean Outflow Water is the main water mass at similar water depths, the palaeoceanography of the studied area is mostly influenced by the amount of Antarctic Intermediate Water advected from the south. The density contrast between the Antarctic Intermediate Water and the overlying North Atlantic Central Water determined the strength of the prevailing internal tides and corresponding high current speeds, which drastically impacted the sedimentary record. The most notable impact is the presence of a 7.8 kyr condensed section (30.5–22.7 ka bp). The formation of the Pen Duick sediment drift was not just controlled by the strength of the bottom currents and the intensity of the internal tides, but also by the amount of (aeolian) sediment supplied to the region. Although variable, drift-growth phases seem to mainly occur during colder periods of the last glacial, that is Heinrich and Dansgaard-Oeschger events during Marine Isotope Stage 3 and late Marine Isotope Stage 2. These periods, characterised by increased aeolian dust supply and higher bottom currents, coincide with a phase of prolific cold-water coral growth and enhanced coral mound formation as recorded in numerous cores obtained from the southern Gulf of Cádiz. This implies that both records (on and off mound cores) are pivotal to provide the complete picture of the palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic conditions in the region.

Abstract

Thirty-three patients had stopped cemiplimab: 5 due to completion of the stipulated 2 years treatment, 3 due to start of the COVID pandemic, 1 due to death from other cause, 24 (63.2%) due to progressive disease (PD) (2 patients had stopped due to adverse events, but subsequently progressed). The authors acknowledge the patients who have taken part in the NPS scheme who have contributed to the real-world evidence. Out of the 24 who progressed, 3 patients were alive at time of data cut-off. gl Our results are comparable with other real-world studies, although lower compared with the Empower study.3,4 Six patients (15.8%) died within 2 months of commencing therapy and had advanced disease that was treated at a late stage whilst awaiting access to cemiplimab.
