Udgivelsesdato: 2007-Jan-29 INTRODUCTION: Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign lesion of the liver and is most commonly seen in women in the reproductive age. This article is a retrospective study of FNH. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Patients with histologically verified FNH were included. The relationship between tumor size, sex and estrogen was investigated. RESULTS: 24 patients were included. In 19 cases, the diagnosis was made coincidentally during the investigation or treatment of another disease. There was no difference in average tumor-size between sexes, but estrogen-treated women had larger tumors. Biopsies were needed in order to establish the diagnosis and to rule out malignancy. In most cases, the chosen strategy of management was expectancy rather than surgery. CONCLUSION: FNH is a benign liver disease and is often diagnosed coincidentally. An association between tumor size and estrogen treatment remains elusive. Diagnostic Imaging with contrast enhancement may produce characteristic features of FNH. However, biopsy remains the best option to diagnose FNH and to rule out malignancy.

Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reactions to the experimental allergen diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP) were measured in four groups, which either trained (+) or did not train in relaxation (-) during the sensitization and/or the challenge phase. All groups consisted of high and low hypnotic susceptible subjects. While there were no differences in erythema, the mean induration of the group which trained in relaxation in both the sensitization and the challenge phase (+/+) was significantly greater than that of the group which trained in relaxation in the challenge phase only (-/+). Significant correlations were found between induration and hypnotic susceptibility scores, and between induration and degree of perceived relaxation during challenge. High hypnotic susceptible subjects experienced a higher degree of perceived relaxation and exhibited greater indurative and erythematous DTH reactions to DCP than low hypnotic susceptible subjects in all four experimental conditions. Though the mediating mechanisms remain unclear, our results suggest that relaxation may affect the DTH reaction, and support previous findings of higher psychophysiologic reactivity of high hypnotic susceptible subjects.

An analysis of the history of 28 men suffering from systemic sclerosis, diagnosed at our department during the last 25 years, showed that 21 (75%) had been subject to exposures previously suggested to be of importance in occupational scleroderma. The exposures were revealed by patient files, reports to health authorities, interviews and/or answers to questionnaires. Organic solvents being the most frequent exposure. This was found in thirteen of the patients (46%). A significant difference was found between scleroderma patients and control patients not suffering from connective tissue diseases in relation to total number of subjects exposed to one or several of the agents in question.

Forty-one patients with systemic sclerosis were investigated with a new and simple skin score method measuring the degree of thickening and pliability in seven regions together with area involvement in each region. The highest values were, as expected, found in diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (type III SS) and the lowest in limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (type I SS) with no lesions extending above wrists and ancles. A positive correlation was found to the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen, a serological marker for synthesis of type III collagen. The skin score is considered simpler than previous methods and is recommended for more general use.
