This comparative analysis applies a distributed leadership framework to data from teachers and leaders taking the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL). Because the policies educators in Denmark and the United States respond to in their daily practice are related through the transnational policy borrowing process, we are better able to understand how these policies impact educators in their respective countries by comparing their leadership practice through a shared lens: the CALL framework. In this exploratory analysis, we take a comparative perspective by asking: How does distributed leadership practice compare in the US and the Danish contexts of schooling? And: How do views on leadership practice vary according to professional roles in specific national and local (school) contexts? Our conceptual framework has three components: neoinstitutional theory, translation theory, and distributed leadership. We use multilevel confirmatory factor analysis and t-tests with SY2015-2016 CALL data to compare and contrast the pattern of leadership practices teachers and school leaders take-up in Danish and US schools. We found that the leadership practices aligned to a school-wide focus on learning are closely associated with the work of monitoring teaching and learning and building nested learning communities, particularly in the US context of schooling.

Since 1993, regular population health surveys in Greenland have supported and monitored the public health strategy of Greenland and have monitored cardiometabolic and lung diseases. The most recent of these surveys included 2539 persons aged 15+ from 20 communities spread over the whole country. The survey instruments included personal interviews, self-administered questionnaires, blood sampling, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, ECG, oral glucose test, pulmonary function, hand grip strength and chair stand test. Blood samples were analysed for glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, incretin hormones, cholesterol, kidney function, fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes and mercury, urine for albumin-creatinine ratio, and aliquots were stored at −80°C for future use. Data were furthermore collected for studies of the gut microbiome and diabetes complications. Survey participants were followed up with register data. The potential of the study is to contribute to the continued monitoring of risk factors and health conditions as part of Greenland’s public health strategy and to study the epidemiology of cardiometabolic diseases and other chronic diseases and behavioural risk factors. The next population health survey is planned for 2024. The emphasis of the article is on the methods of the study and results will be presented in other publications.

In the past decades, the importance of developing and validating informal and nonformal learning processes has been launched by several international organizations including UNESCO and the OECD, originally mostly focusing on adult learning experiences. Meanwhile, in recent years an increased focus has been evidenced on introducing informal and non-formal learning environments for learners at primary and secondary school levels as means of re-engaging in particular school-leavers, drop-outs, and disadvantaged learners in the formal educational system. Educational policy, empirical studies, projects, and various pedagogical interventions carried out in Europe, the United States, and other countries evidence this development. Based on empirical data and research from an European project "Anholt 2013" aimed at empowering disadvantaged and disengaged young European school-leavers, and motivating them to take responsibility for their own need for education, this article sets out to reflect whether informal and non-formal learning environments should be considered in teacher education and teaching.

Background COVID‐19 infection has been hypothesized to affect left ventricular function; however, the underlying mechanisms and the association to clinical outcome are not understood. The global work index (GWI) is a novel echocardiographic measure of systolic function that may offer insights on cardiac dysfunction in COVID‐19. We hypothesized that GWI was associated with disease severity and all‐cause death in patients with COVID‐19. Methods and Results In a multicenter study of patients admitted with COVID‐19 (n=305), 249 underwent pressure‐strain loop analyses to quantify GWI at a median time of 4 days after admission. We examined the association of GWI to cardiac biomarkers (troponin and NT‐proBNP [N‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide]), disease severity (oxygen requirement and CRP [C‐reactive protein]), and all‐cause death. Patients with elevated troponin (n=71) exhibited significantly reduced GWI (1508 versus 1707 mm Hg%; P=0.018). A curvilinear association to NT‐proBNP was observed, with increasing NT‐proBNP once GWI decreased below 1446 mm Hg%. Moreover, GWI was significantly associated with a higher oxygen requirement (relative increase of 6% per 100–mm Hg% decrease). No association was observed with CRP. Of the 249 patients, 37 died during follow‐up (median, 58 days). In multivariable Cox regression, GWI was associated with all‐cause death (hazard ratio, 1.08 [95% CI, 1.01–1.15], per 100–mm Hg% decrease), but did not increase C‐statistics when added to clinical parameters. Conclusions In patients admitted with COVID‐19, our findings indicate that NT‐proBNP and troponin may be associated with lower GWI, whereas CRP is not. GWI was independently associated with all‐cause death, but did not provide prognostic information beyond readily available clinical parameters. Climate change and intensifying agricultural production and urbanization are central factors driving the global freshwater biodiversity decline. To design sustainable green transition schemes and support urban planning, a deeper understanding of the numerous interacting physicochemical and biogeochemical processes and their relation to ecological quality becomes essential. This study thus aims to explore links between hydrological regimes and patterns evident for key water quality parameters and benthic invertebrate indicators in a peri-urban catchment that has undergone several stream restoration projects. Results indicate significant seasonal variability in discharge and physico-chemical parameters confounding the identification of sources behind detrimental impacts on ecological quality, which may lead to the implementation of inappropriate mitigation strategies. Notably, sampling at the sub-catchment level underlined the dynamic contributions of both agricultural and urban-like areas for nitrogen and phosphorus, while non-volatile carbon was mainly exported from agricultural lands. Multivariate statistical methods were used to classify benthic macro- and meioinvertebrate (specifically nematode) taxa showing poor-to-moderate and poor-to-good ecological quality, respectively. Poor ecological quality was mostly found in the upstream part of the catchment, driven by a combination of low habitat quality and periodically impaired physico-chemical conditions (e.g. dissolved oxygen, temperature, and suspended solids). In addition, the nematode-based stress index NemaSPEAR[%] (expressing the proportion of species-at-risk within a sample and specifically sensitive to the chemical contamination), indicated a TSS-related transport of contaminants to the sediment. It could also reveal both the negative impacts of different urban features (low ecological quality just downstream of combined sewer overflows), as well as the potential benefits of wastewater effluents (i.e. good ecological quality, via well-treated flow contributions and limited fine sediment accumulation especially in summer) on the stream ecosystem. Our results highlight that the use of this indicator, in combination with high frequency monitoring are promising techniques to better link the dynamic impacts of land use and spatiotemporal changes in ecological quality.

Filamentous cable bacteria conduct electrical currents over centimeter distances through fibers embedded in their cell envelope. Here, Boschker et al. show that the fibers consist of a conductive core containing nickel proteins that is surrounded by an insulating protein shell.

Purpose The Health in Central Denmark (HICD) cohort is a newly established cohort built on extensive questionnaire data linked with laboratory data and Danish national health and administrative registries. The aim is to establish an extensive resource for (1) gaining knowledge on patient-related topics and experiences that are not measured objectively at clinical health examinations and (2) long-term follow-up studies of inequality in diabetes and diabetes-related complications.Participants A total of 1.3 million inhabitants reside in the Central Denmark Region. Using register data and a prespecified diabetes classification algorithm, we identified 45 507 persons aged 18–75 years with prevalent diabetes on 31 December 2018 and a group without diabetes of equal size matched by sex, age and municipality. A 90-item questionnaire was distributed to eligible members of this cohort on 18 November 2020 (estimated time required for completion: 15–20 min).Findings to date We invited 90 854 persons to take part in the survey, of whom 51 854 answered the questionnaire (57.1%). Among these respondents, 2,832 persons had type 1 diabetes (55.9%), 21,140 persons had type 2 diabetes (53.2%), while 27,892 persons were part of the matched group without diabetes (60.4%). In addition to questionnaire data, the cohort is linked to nationwide registries that provide extensive data on hospital diagnoses and procedures, medication use and socioeconomic status decades before enrolment while laboratory registries has provided repeated measures of biochemical markers, for example, lipids, albuminuria and glycated haemoglobin up to 10 years before enrolment.Future plans The HICD will serve as an extensive resource for studies on patient-related information and inequality in type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Follow-up is planned to continue for at least 10 years and detailed follow-up questionnaires, including new topics, are planned to be distributed during this period, while registry data are planned to be updated every second year.

For decades foreign and second language teachers have taken advantage of the technology development and ensuing possibilities to use e-learning facilities for language training. Since the 1980s, the use of computer assisted language learning (CALL), Internet, web 2.0, and various kinds of e-learning technology has been developed and researched comprehensively to extend predominantly communicative language teaching approaches focusing on training language skills. While international, in the 2000s the use of web 2.0 technologies in particular has been introduced for developing reading and writing skills in Denmark with special attention towards the development of web-based materials for Danish pronunciation. This paper sets out to introduce differences between the international and Danish use of web-based language learning and teaching. Finally, dilemmas and challenges for the use of CALL, IT, and web 2.0 in L2 teaching and learning and in particular the teachers' key role in e-learning will be addressed.

Long-distance extracellular electron transfer has been observed in Gram-negative bacteria. Here, Yang et al. show that a filamentous, unicellular Gram-positive bacterium is capable of bidirectional extracellular electron transfer, and forms centimetre-range conductive networks consisting of 1mm-long cells and conductive appendages.

Conflicting evidence suggests a link between diabetes-related microvascular complications and periodontitis. Reliable estimates have been hindered by small sample sizes and residual confounding. Moreover, the combined effects of microvascular complications and dyslipidemia on periodontitis have not been explored. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between individual and combined diabetic microvascular complications (i.e., neuropathy and retinopathy) and moderate/severe periodontitis in a Danish population-based study. In addition, we assessed whether dyslipidemia modified these associations. This study comprised 15,922 participants with type 2 diabetes from the Health in Central Denmark study. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for individual and joint microvascular diabetes complications. The models adjusted for potential confounders, including sociodemographic factors, lifestyle behaviors, and health conditions. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) balanced measured confounders between periodontitis and nonperiodontitis participants. Sensitivity analyses tested the findings' robustness by estimating E-values for unmeasured confounding and varying microvascular complication definitions. After IPTW, adjusted models revealed that diabetic neuropathy (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.63) and retinopathy (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.43) were significantly associated with moderate/severe periodontitis. Moreover, the coexistence of microvascular complications increased the odds 1.5-fold for moderate/severe periodontitis (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.23 to 1.85). An effect modification of dyslipidemia on an additive scale was found, indicated by a positive relative excess risk due to interaction of 0.24 for neuropathy, 0.11 for retinopathy, and 0.44 for both complications. Sensitivity analysis ruled out unmeasured confounders and microvascular complication definitions as explanatory factors. Diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy, individually and combined, were associated with moderate/severe periodontitis. In addition, dyslipidemia had an additive positive effect modification on diabetic microvascular complications, elevating the odds of moderate/severe periodontitis. These findings may aid in identifying at-risk subgroups for diabetes-related microvascular complications and periodontitis, optimizing efforts to mitigate disease burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
