We investigate the usage of a Schlieren imaging setup to measure the geometrical dimensions of a plasma channel in atomic vapor. Near resonant probe light is used to image the plasma channel in a tenuous vapor and machine learning techniques are tested for extracting quantitative information from the images. By building a database of simulated signals with a range of plasma parameters for training Deep Neural Networks, we demonstrate that they can extract from the Schlieren images reliably and with high accuracy the location, the radius and the maximum ionization fraction of the plasma channel as well as the width of the transition region between the core of the plasma channel and the unionized vapor. We test several different neural network architectures with supervised learning and show that the parameter estimations supplied by the networks are resilient with respect to slight changes of the experimental parameters that may occur in the course of a measurement., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

Mathematics - Combinatorics ,05C63, 05C69 - Abstract
We investigate how the metric dimension of infinite graphs change when we add edges to the graph. Our two main results: (1) there exists a growing sequence of graphs (under the subgraph relation, but without adding vertices) for which the metric dimension changes between finite and infinite infinitely many times; (2) finite changes in the edge set can not change the metric dimension from finite to infinite or vice versa.

T cells use sophisticated shape dynamics (morphodynamics) to migrate towards and neutralise infected and cancerous cells. However, there is limited quantitative understanding of the migration process in 3D extracellular matrices (ECMs) and across timescales. Here, we leveraged recent advances in lattice light-sheet microscopy to quantitatively explore the 3D morphodynamics of migrating T cells at high spatiotemporal resolution. We first developed a new shape descriptor based on spherical harmonics, incorporating key polarisation information of the uropod. We found that the shape space of T cells is low-dimensional. At the behavioural level, run-and-stop migration modes emerge at ~150 s, and we mapped the morphodynamic composition of each mode using multiscale wavelet analysis, finding 'stereotyped' motifs. Focusing on the run mode, we found morphodynamics oscillating periodically (every ~100 s) that can be broken down into a biphasic process: front-widening with retraction of the uropod, followed by a rearward surface motion and forward extension, where intercalation with the ECM in both of these steps likely facilitates forward motion. Further application of these methods may enable the comparison of T cell migration across different conditions (e.g. differentiation, activation, tissues, and drug treatments), and improve the precision of immunotherapeutic development.

In this work we report the discovery and analysis of six new compact triply eclipsing triple star systems found with the TESS mission: TICs 37743815, 42565581, 54060695, 178010808, 242132789, and 456194776. All of these exhibit distinct third body eclipses where the inner eclipsing binary (EB) occults the third (`tertiary') star, or vice versa. We utilized the TESS photometry, archival photometric data, and available archival spectral energy distribution curves (SED) to solve for the properties of all three stars, as well as many of the orbital elements. We describe in detail our SED fits, search of the archival data for the outer orbital period, and the final global photodynamical analyses. From these analyses we find that all six systems are coplanar to within $0^\circ$ - $5^\circ$, and are viewed nearly edge on (i.e., within a couple of degrees). The outer orbital periods and eccentricities of the six systems are {$P_{\rm out}$ (days), $e$}: {68.7, 0.36}, {123, 0.16}, {60.7, 0.01}, {69.0, 0.29}, {41.5, 0.01}, {93.9, 0.29}, respectively, in the order the sources are listed above. The masses of all 12 EB stars were in the range of 0.7-1.8 M$_\odot$ and were situated near the main sequence. By contrast, the masses and radii of the tertiary stars ranged from 1.5-2.3 M$_\odot$ and 2.9-12 R$_\odot$, respectively. We use this information to estimate the occurrence rate of compact flat triple systems., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 16 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Matching games naturally generalize assignment games, a well-known class of cooperative games. Interest in matching games has grown recently due to some breakthrough results and new applications. This state-of-the-art survey provides an overview of matching games and extensions, such as $b$-matching games and partitioned matching games; the latter originating from the emerging area of international kidney exchange. In this survey we focus on computational complexity aspects of various game-theoretical solution concepts, such as the core, nucleolus and Shapley value, when the input is restricted to a matching game or one if its variants.

In a multiple partners matching problem the agents can have multiple partners up to their capacities. In this paper we consider both the two-sided many-to-many stable matching problem and the one-sided stable fixtures problem under lexicographic preferences. We study strong core and Pareto-optimal solutions for this setting from a computational point of view. First we provide an example to show that the strong core can be empty even under these severe restrictions for many-to-many problems, and that deciding the non-emptiness of the strong core is NP-hard. We also show that for a given matching checking Pareto-optimality and the strong core properties are co-NP-complete problems for the many-to-many problem, and deciding the existence of a complete Pareto-optimal matching is also NP-hard for the fixtures problem. On the positive side, we give efficient algorithms for finding a near feasible strong core solution, where the capacities are only violated by at most one unit for each agent, and also for finding a half-matching in the strong core of fractional matchings. These polynomial time algorithms are based on the Top Trading Cycle algorithm. Finally, we also show that finding a maximum size matching that is Pareto-optimal can be done efficiently for many-to-many problems, which is in contrast with the hardness result for the fixtures problem.

Socio-economic inequalities derived from an exhaustive wealth distribution is studied in a closed geographical region from Transylvania (Romania). Exhaustive wealth data is computed from the agricultural records of the Sancraiu commune for three different economic situations. The gathered data is spanning two different periods from the communist economy and the present situation after 31 years of free market economy in Romania. The local growth and reset model based on an analytically solvable master equation is used to describe the observed data. The model with realistically chosen growth and reset rates is successful in describing both the experimentally observed distributions and the inequality indexes (Lorenz curve, Gini coefficient and Pareto point) derived from this data. The observed changes in these inequality measures are discussed in the context of the relevant socio-economic conditions., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 7 Tables, Latex

Hadronization is a non-perturbative process, which theoretical description can not be deduced from first principles. Modeling hadron formation requires several assumptions and various phenomenological approaches. Utilizing state-of-the-art Computer Vision and Deep Learning algorithms, it is eventually possible to train neural networks to learn non-linear and non-perturbative features of the physical processes. In this study, results of two ResNet networks are presented by investigating global and kinematical quantities, indeed jet- and event-shape variables. The widely used Lund string fragmentation model is applied as a baseline in $\sqrt{s}= 7$ TeV proton-proton collisions to predict the most relevant observables at further LHC energies.

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
In this work we report the discovery and analysis of three new triply eclipsing triple star systems found with the TESS mission during its observations of the northern skies: TICs 193993801, 388459317, and 52041148. We utilized the TESS precision photometry of the binary eclipses and third-body eclipsing events, ground-based archival and follow-up photometric data, eclipse timing variations, archival spectral energy distributions, as well as theoretical evolution tracks in a joint photodynamical analysis to deduce the system masses and orbital parameters of both the inner and outer orbits. In one case (TIC 193993801) we also obtained radial velocity measurements of all three stars. This enabled us to `calibrate' our analysis approach with and without `truth' (i.e., RV) data. We find that the masses are good to 1-3% accuracy with RV data and 3-10% without the use of RV data. In all three systems we were able to find the outer orbital period before doing any detailed analysis by searching for a longer-term periodicity in the ASAS-SN archival photometry data -- just a few thousand ASAS-SN points enabled us to find the outer periods of 49.28 d, 89.86 d, and 177.0 d, respectively. From our full photodynamical analysis we find that all three systems are coplanar to within $1^\circ - 3^\circ$. The outer eccentricities of the three systems are 0.003, 0.10, and 0.62, respectively (i.e., spanning a factor of 200). The masses of the three stars {Aa, Ab, and B} in the three systems are: {1.31, 1.19, 1.34}, {1.82, 1.73, 2.19}, and {1.62, 1.48, 2.74} M$_\odot$, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Many countries have secured larger quantities of COVID-19 vaccines than their populace is willing to take. This abundance and variety of vaccines created a historical moment to understand vaccine hesitancy better. Never before were more types of vaccines available for an illness and the intensity of vaccine-related public discourse is unprecedented. Yet, the heterogeneity of hesitancy by vaccine types has been neglected so far, even though factual or believed vaccine characteristics and patient attributes are known to influence acceptance. We address this problem by analysing acceptance and assessment of five vaccine types using information collected with a nationally representative survey at the end of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hungary, where a unique portfolio of vaccines were available to the public in large quantities. Our special case enables us to quantify revealed preferences across vaccine types since one could evaluate a vaccine unacceptable and even could reject an assigned vaccine to wait for another type. We find that the source of information that respondents trust characterizes their attitudes towards vaccine types differently and leads to divergent vaccine hesitancy. Believers of conspiracy theories were significantly more likely to evaluate the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) unacceptable while those who follow the advice of politicians evaluate vector-based (AstraZeneca and Sputnik) or whole-virus vaccines (Sinopharm) acceptable with higher likelihood. We illustrate that the rejection of non-desired and re-selection of preferred vaccines fragments the population by the mRNA versus other type of vaccines while it generally improves the assessment of the received vaccine. These results highlight that greater variance of available vaccine types and individual free choice are desirable conditions that can widen the acceptance of vaccines in societies., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

Mathematics - Combinatorics - Abstract
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains. Over 30 years ago, Szemer\'edi proved that any on-line algorithm could be forced to use $\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$. The maximum number of chains that can be forced on any on-line algorithm remains unknown. In a survey paper by Bosek et al., it is shown that Szemer\'edi's argument could be improved to obtain a lower bound almost twice as good. Variants of the problem were considered where the class is restricted to posets of bounded dimension or where the poset is presented via a realizer of size $d$. In this paper, we prove two results. First, we prove that any on-line algorithm can be forced to use $(2-o(1))\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a $2$-dimensional poset of width $w$. Second, we prove that any on-line algorithm can be forced to use $(2-\frac{1}{d-1}-o(1))\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$ presented via a realizer of size $d$.

Mathematics - Combinatorics - Abstract
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains in the partition. The on-line chain partitioning problem involves finding the minimal number of chains needed by an optimal on-line algorithm. Chrobak and \'Slusarek considered variants of the on-line chain partitioning problem in which the elements are presented as intervals and intersecting intervals are incomparable. They constructed an on-line algorithm which uses at most $3w-2$ chains, where $w$ is the width of the interval order, and showed that this algorithm is optimal. They also considered the problem restricted to intervals of unit-length and while they showed that first-fit needs at most $2w-1$ chains, over $30$ years later, it remains unknown whether a more optimal algorithm exists. In this paper, we improve upon previously known bounds and show that any on-line algorithm can be forced to use $\lceil\frac{3}{2}w\rceil$ chains to partition a semi-order presented in the form of its unit-interval representation. As a consequence, we completely solve the problem for $w=3$.

The transverse momentum distribution of identified hadrons from recent years are analyzed within the thermodynamically consistent formulation of non-extensive statistics. A wide range of center-of-mass energies and average event multiplicities are studied for various hadron species. We demonstrate that the average event multiplicity is a key variable in the study of high-energy collisions and a smooth transition in the description from small to large systems is possible. For this purpose the non-extensive statistical approach is more than appropriate. The validity of the non-extensive description is explored in multiple ways: such as the calculation of integrated yields per unit rapidity, the analysis of radial flow and the consistency check of the thermodynamical variables. The 'Tsallis-thermometer' is introduced as an indicator of quark-gluon plasma in small collisional systems., Comment: 47 pages, 26 figures

Mathematics - Combinatorics - Abstract
In general, representations of interval orders may use an arbitrary set of interval lengths. We can define subclasses of interval orders by restricting the allowable lengths of intervals. Motivated by a recent paper of Keller, Trenk, and Young, we study the dimension of posets in some of these subclasses. Among other results, we answer several of their questions, and we simplify the proof of one of their main results.

We study housing markets as introduced by Shapley and Scarf (1974). We investigate the computational complexity of various questions regarding the situation of an agent $a$ in a housing market $H$: we show that it is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard to find an allocation in the core of $H$ where (i) $a$ receives a certain house, (ii) $a$ does not receive a certain house, or (iii) $a$ receives a house other than her own. We prove that the core of housing markets respects improvement in the following sense: given an allocation in the core of $H$ where agent $a$ receives a house $h$, if the value of the house owned by $a$ increases, then the resulting housing market admits an allocation in its core in which $a$ receives either $h$, or a house that $a$ prefers to $h$; moreover, such an allocation can be found efficiently. We further show an analogous result in the Stable Roommates setting by proving that stable matchings in a one-sided market also respect improvement., Comment: 33 pages

To overcome incompatibility issues, kidney patients may swap their donors. In international kidney exchange programmes (IKEPs), countries merge their national patient-donor pools. We consider a recently introduced credit system. In each round, countries are given an initial ``fair'' allocation of the total number of kidney transplants. This allocation is adjusted by a credit function yielding a target allocation. The goal is to find a solution that approaches the target allocation as closely as possible, to ensure long-term stability of the international pool. As solutions, we use maximum matchings that lexicographically minimize the country deviations from the target allocation. We perform, for the first time, a computational study for a {\it large} number of countries. For the initial allocations we use two easy-to-compute solution concepts, the benefit value and the contribution value, and four classical but hard-to-compute concepts, the Shapley value, nucleolus, Banzhaf value and tau value. By using state-of-the-art software we show that the latter four concepts are now within reach for IKEPs of up to fifteen countries. Our experiments show that using lexicographically minimal maximum matchings instead of ones that only minimize the largest deviation from the target allocation (as previously done) may make an IKEP up to 54% more balanced.

Computer Science - Computers and Society - Abstract
This article reports from an ongoing 'evaluation for improvement' action research and participatory design project in Rwanda, where the aim is to improve data use practices and the capabilities of the District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2), an open source health information management platform, to support data use. The study of data use at health facility and district level showed that while data was used routinely at, for example, monthly coordination meetings, the DHIS2 dashboards and other analytical tools were in limited use because users preferred to use Microsoft Excel for data analysis and use. Given such findings, a major focus of the project has been directed towards identifying shortcomings in data use practices and in the software platform and to suggest, design and eventually implement changes. While the practical work on implementing improvements have been slow due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the suggested design improvements involve many levels of system design and participation, from the global core DHIS2 software team, the country DHIS2 team and local app development, the Rwanda Ministry of Health, and health workers at local level., Comment: In proceedings of the 1st Virtual Conference on Implications of Information and Digital Technologies for Development, 2021
