The paper presents first results of a research aiming at a more refined definition of the so-called speaking styles. A speaker is recorded in 6 situations and the formants of his /i/, /a/ and /u/ vowels are studied. New categorizations of the speaking styles are proposed, on the basis of the similarities and dissimilarities in formant frequencies values drawn from the various communication situations. more...

Summary : Child dysphasia and the mother's language Mothers of 2 groups (10 with a dysphasic child and 10 with a normal child) were recorded while they were addressing a narration either to an adult or to their own children. Children were front 4;6 to 6;0 years old. Parallel syntactic and acoustic analyzes of the motkers' utterances show, in all mothers, dramatic between-addressee changes. Between-group syntactic differences are few (one variable only is slighily affected), although phonetic differences appear more clearly : the voices of the mothers with dysphasic children show higher pitch, together with less pitch variability, relative to the control group.

This paper examines whether language dominance exerts influences on speaker’s voice quality. Ten French–Polish bilingual subjects, split into a French‐dominant group and a Polish‐dominant group, were selected. They were asked to record five utterances of two balanced texts (one for each language). One FFT‐based LTAS was computed for each utterance. The so‐obtained 100 spectra were compared by means of a pattern recognition procedure: the SDDD dissimilarity index. Two types of within‐speaker comparisons were performed for each subject: within‐language comparisons and between‐language comparisons. The results show that the average SDDD index values derived from the between‐language comparisons score higher than those drawn from within‐language matchings. This confirms our earlier results based on different types of bilinguals. The within‐language FR/FR SDDD index values tend to score higher in the French‐dominant group than the POL/POL ones; the opposite relationship can be observed in Polish‐dominant subjects. These results empower one to generalize the idea that language dominance seems to be a significant variable in the characterization of the phonetic behavior of speakers using more than one language. more...

This paper summarizes the development and the presentation of a discrimination test of the relative height of two pure sounds. Sixty pairs of sounds have been presented to 68 subjects. The elaboration of these pairs was based on a selection of ten initial stimuli that were paired according to three different intervals: octave, 1/3 octave, and 11/24 octave. These stimuli were then presented by pairs to the subjects in a random way, according to an ascending or a descending sequential structure. The aim of this work is to test: whether the paired sounds’ presentation order (ascending or descending) has, or has not, an effect on the subjects’ results; whether the kind of frequential interval is a determining factor in the subjects’ discriminatory abilities; whether the musical education plays a role on performances (in comparing musicians’ and nonmusicians’ performances). Together with measurement of reliability, the results show that: it is easier to discriminate sounds in an ascending structure, whatever t... more...

Lowenthal (1978) defined, some years ago, what is now known as “Non-verbal communication devices” (NVCD). A detailed definition and a long discussion concerning the relevance of the concept NVCD can be found in another paper (Lowenthal, this volume). Since 1978, much research concerning the use of NVCDs by several kinds of subjects, has been led in the NVCD lab at the University of Mons. This research shows the importance of this kind of approach (Lowenthal, 1980, 1984). A new research trend has been recently described (Harmegnies and Lowenthal, 1984) which will enable us to extend previous research and to study aspects of NVCDs which were not studied before. In order to reach our aim, we will use new means and we will place our investigations in a framework differing from the one previously used. On the one hand, we will use computerized NVCDs with children: the computer will give (or “serve”) information; on the other hand we will focus on new research topics which could not be studied without having recourse to informatics: the computer will “observe” children. more...

International audience; The present work focuses on domestic violence and their speech. Our problematic aims to make a descriptive analysis of a certain type of communicative situa-tion: the speech of conjugal violence through digital testimony. This work will aim to show and examine how the suffering of battered women is expressed on the web, and more specifically within the forums to answer the following ques-tions: What are the specificities of testimonies of women victims of violence marital? Is it possible, linguistically and semiotically, to establish gender-specific characteristics of forum testimony when domestic violence is narrated? Thus, we observe specific behaviors of speech setting by making the hypothesis that they are the object of recurrences and, consequently, that their conditions of realization obey certain rules is-sues of their belonging to forums. This problem also tends to highlight the need for the establishment of a corpus of texts (in our case the testimonies of battered women from the Web). The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the content will allow us to work on very large digital corpora. In this respect, we will use our study object with two software pro-grams, Cordial and Hyperbase.; Le présent travail porte sur les violences conjugales et leur mise en discours.

International audience; Physical properties of speech articulators contribute to shape articulatory and formant trajectories. This study aims at evaluating the role of this shaping in speech perception. We conducted perception tests of synthetic stimuli generated with speech production models accounting for different degrees of physical complexity. Our results do not provide any support to the hypothesis that the degree of physical realism in the models influences the perception of naturalness. However for degraded speech (silent center speech), significant differences are observed. more...

International audience; Articulatory control emergence is a long process involving various parameters. At the early stage of babbling, strong temporal constraints are imposed on the young speaker's production system by the biological rhythm of the jaw. However, the baby gradually reorganizes the timing of his mandibular displacements. The observation of syllable duration in 11 subjects between 8 and 12 months, would suggest that, at 10 months, the baby starts decreasing the duration of his syllables in order to introduce a rhythm specific for speech. more...
