Abstract

In this survey article we describe some geometric results in the theory of noncommutative rings and, more generally, in the theory of abelian categories. Roughly speaking and by analogy with the commutative situation, the category of graded modules modulo torsion over a noncommutative graded ring of quadratic, respectively cubic, growth should be thought of as the noncommutative analogue of a projective curve, respectively surface. This intuition has led to a remarkable number of nontrivial insights and results in noncommutative algebra. Indeed, the problem of classifying noncommutative curves (and noncommutative graded rings of quadratic growth) can be regarded as settled. Despite the fact that no classification of noncommutative surfaces is in sight, a rich body of nontrivial examples and techniques, including blowing up and down, has been developed.

Le 19-21 août 2011, deux Traquets à queue noire Cercomela melanura ont été observés sur un inselberg dans le Département de Tankougounadié, à l'est du Burkina Faso, près de la frontière avec le Niger. Le Traquetà queue noire étant généralement considéré comme un résident avec un faible potentiel de dispersion, et vu l'habitat apparemment approprié de la zone, qui est à proximité de l'aire de distribution connue de l'espèce, cette observation indique qu'il s'agit d'une extension de l'aire de distribution plutôt que d'une occurence occasionnelle.

Abstract

Radiation damage limits the resolution in imaging experiments. Damage is caused by energy deposited into the sample during exposure. Ultrashort and extremely bright X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers (FELs) offer the possibility to outrun key damage processes, and temporarily improve radiation tolerance. Theoretical models indicate that high detail-resolutions could be realized on non-crystalline samples with very short pulses, before plasma expansion. Studies presented here describe the interaction of a very intense and ultrashort X-ray pulse with material, and investigate boundary conditions for flash diffractive imaging both theoretically and experimentally. In the hard X-ray regime, predictions are based on particle simulations with a continuum formulation that accounts for screening from free electrons. First experimental results from the first soft X-ray free-electron laser, the FLASH facility in Hamburg, confirm the principle of flash imaging, and provide the first validation of our theoretical models. Specifically, experiments on nano-fabricated test objects show that an interpretable image can be obtained to high resolution before the sample is vaporized. Radiation intensity in these experiments reached 10^14 W/cm^2, and the temperature of the sample rose to 60000 Kelvin after the 25 femtosecond pulse left the sample. Further experiments with time-delay X-ray holography follow the explosion dynamics over some picoseconds after illumination. Finally, this thesis presents results from biological flash-imaging studies on living cells. The model is based on plasma calculations and fluid-like motions of the sample, supported by the time-delay measurements. This study provides an estimate for the achievable resolutions as function of wavelength and pulse length. The technique was demonstrated by our team in an experiment where living cells were exposed to a single shot from the FLASH soft X-ray laser.

Abstract

In an effort to develop high strength aluminum alloys, a near-AA5083 Al-Mg alloy powder was cryomilled in liquid nitrogen and consolidated by vacuum hot-pressing (VHP). The composition of the Al-Mg alloy was designed to minimize intermetallic particles that often lead to premature fracture especially when flow strength is high. The as-VHP material had poor ductility and therefore was extruded under different conditions to obtain a good combination of tensile strength and ductility. The microstructure of samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, EBSD, FIB induced secondary electron orientation contrast imaging, and TEM techniques, which together provided unique assessment at multiple length scales. The samples exhibited a wide range of grain sizes that could be binned into three different groups: i) grain sizes of 50–100 nm, (ii) sizes in the 100–300 nm range, and (iii) elongated larger grains with widths in the range 0.5–2 µm. Room temperature tensile tests with cylindrical dog-bone geometry indicated a high ultimate strength of 730–770 MPa and reproducible elongation to failure of about 3–4%. This combination of strength and ductility in the material are some of the best that have been reported for alloys close to the weldable and corrosion resistant AA5083 composition, and likely a result of the multi-scale microstructure resulting from the processing route. Het thema bevordering van arbeidsproductiviteit staat hoog op de politieke en maatschappelijke agenda. Daarbij gaat het om uiteenlopende zaken, zoals de relatie met beloning, productiviteit binnen teams, en ook de relatie tussen productiviteit en werktijd. In deze publicatie staat de relatie tussen productiviteit en werktijd centraal. Onderzoek is uitgevoerd rond de volgende hoofdvragen: Wat zijn de ontwikkelingen ten aanzien van de intensiteit van deeltijdtransacties en welke effecten worden daarbij onderscheiden? Hoe verandert de arbeidsproductiviteit van werknemers die (mogelijk tijdelijk) meer of minder gaan werken? Op welke wijze kunnen arbeidsorganisaties en individuele werknemers een productiviteitsval voorkomen? Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat er geen eenduidig en algemeen toepasbaar antwoord te geven is op de vraag wat de optimale omvang van de werkweek zou moeten zijn vanuit het oogpunt van gewenste toename van arbeidsproductiviteit. Evenmin valt eenduidig aan te geven wat het effect is van individuele transities van werknemers. Wel is duidelijk dat op gerichte wijze de productiviteit meetbaar en beïnvloedbaar gemaakt is en kan worden. Maatwerk is dan wel vereist, evenals een goede wijze van registratie en monitoring.

Abstract

Understanding the ultrafast dynamics of matter under extreme conditions is relevant for structural studies and plasma physics with X-ray lasers. We used the pulses from free-electron lasers (FLASH in Hamburg and LCLS in Stanford) to trigger X-ray induced explosions in atomic atoms (Xe) and molecular clusters (CH4 and CD4). The explosion dynamics depends on cluster size and the intensity of the X-ray pulse, and a transition from Coulomb explosion to hydrodynamic expansion is expected with increasing size and increasing pulse intensity. In methane clusters experiments at FLASH, the time-of-flight spectrometry shows the appearance of molecular adducts which are the result of molecular recombination between ions and molecules. The recombination depends on the cluster size and the expansion mechanism and becomes significant in larger clusters. In Xenon cluster experiments at the LCLS, measurements of the ion charge states in clusters suggest a formation of Xe nanoplasma which expands hydrodynamically. Abstract

Mosaicism in 4-8-cell human embryos analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) has been widely reported, but few studies have addressed the incidence of mosaicism in more advanced embryonic stages. In the present study we analysed spare human embryos in a case of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for increased risk of aneuploidy because of an infertile 47,XYY man. After replacement of two embryos typed as 1818XX at PGD, six spare embryos (not frozen because of their low quality) were re-analysed on Day 5 for PGD confirmation. Out of five embryos typed as 1818XY at PGD, four were diploid mosaic (DM) and one was normal in all cells. The sixth embryo, typed as 18XYY/1818181818X at PGD, was a DM. In spite of the bias of our small series of morphologically low-quality embryos, the surprisingly high proportion of mosaics (which confirms previous findings) questions the validity of PGD, but supports the strategy of transferring only the embryos where two blastomeres gave normal and concordant results at PGD. More data are required to understand the clinical significance of early diploid mosaicism (and its impact on implantation rate) and to determine whether some diploid mosaic embryos might be considered safe for transfer.

Abstract

Studies of materials under extreme conditions have relevance to a broad area of research, including planetary physics, fusion research, materials science, and structural biology with x-ray lasers. We study such extreme conditions and experimentally probe the interaction between ultrashort soft x-ray pulses and solid targets (metals and their deuterides) at the FLASH free-electron laser where power densities exceeding 1017 W/cm2 were reached. Time-of-flight ion spectrometry and crater analysis were used to characterize the interaction. The results show the onset of saturation in the ablation process at power densities above 1016 W/cm2. This effect can be linked to a transiently induced x-ray transparency in the solid by the femtosecond x-ray pulse at high power densities. The measured kinetic energies of protons and deuterons ejected from the surface reach several keV and concur with predictions from plasma-expansion models. Simulations of the interactions were performed with a nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium code with radiation transfer. These calculations return critical depths similar to the observed crater depths and capture the transient surface transparency at higher power densities.

Abstract

Pulse intensities greater than 1017 Watt/cm2 were reached at the FLASH soft X-ray laser in Hamburg, Germany, using an off-axis parabolic mirror to focus 15 fs pulses of 5–70 μJ energy at 13.5 nm wavelength to a micron-sized spot. We describe the interaction of such pulses with niobium and vanadium targets and their deuterides. The beam produced craters in the solid targets, and we measured the kinetic energy of ions ejected from these craters. Ions with several keV kinetic energy were observed from craters approaching 5 μm in depth when the sample was at best focus. We also observed the onset of saturation in both ion acceleration and ablation with pulse intensities exceeding 1016 W/cm2, when the highest detected ion energies and the crater depths tend to saturate with increasing intensity. A general difficulty in working with micron and sub-micron focusing optics is finding the exact focus of the beam inside a vacuum chamber. Here we propose a direct method to measure the focal position to a resolution better than the Rayleigh length. The method is based on the correlation between the energies of ejected ions and the physical dimensions of the craters. We find that the focus position can be quickly determined from the ion time-of-flight (TOF) data as the target is scanned through the expected focal region. The method does not require external access to the sample or venting the vacuum chamber. Profile fitting employed to analyze the TOF data can extend resolution beyond the actual scanning step size.

Abstract

Powerful free electron lasers (FELs) operating in the soft X-ray regime are offering new possibilities for creating and probing materials under extreme conditions. We describe here simulations to model the interaction of a focused FEL pulse with metallic solids (niobium, vanadium, and their deuterides) at 13.5 nm wavelength (92 eV) with peak intensities between 10(15) to 10(18) W/cm(2) and a fixed pulse length of 15 femtoseconds (full width at half maximum). The interaction of the pulse with the metallic solids was modeled with a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium code that included radiation transfer. The calculations also made use of a self-similar isothermal fluid model for plasma expansion into vacuum. We find that the time-evolution of the simulated critical charge density in the sample results in a critical depth that approaches the observed crater depths in an earlier experiment performed at the FLASH free electron laser in Hamburg. The results show saturation in the ablation process at intensities exceeding 10(16) W/cm(2). Furthermore, protons and deuterons with kinetic energies of several keV have been measured, and these concur with predictions from the plasma expansion model. Abstract

We exposed bulk SiC and films of SiC and B4C to single 25 fs long free-electron-laser pulses with wavelengths between 13.5 and 32 nm. The materials are candidates for x-ray free-electron laser optics. We found that the threshold for surface-damage of the bulk SiC samples exceeds the fluence required for thermal melting at all wavelengths. The damage threshold of the film sample shows a strong wavelength dependence. For wavelengths of 13.5 and 21.7 nm, the damage threshold is equal to or exceeds the melting threshold, whereas at 32 nm the damage threshold falls below the melting threshold.

Abstract

Soft-x-ray free-electron lasers have enabled materials studies in which structural information is obtained faster than the relevant probe-induced damage mechanisms. We present a continuum model to describe the damage process based on hot-dense plasma theory, which includes a description of the energy deposition in the samples, the subsequent dynamics of the sample, and the detector signal. We compared the model predictions with experimental data and mostly found reasonable agreement. In view of future free-electron-laser performance, the model was also used to predict damage dynamics of samples and optical elements at shorter wavelengths and larger photon fluences than currently available.

Linear-accelerator-based sources will revolutionize ultrafast x-ray science due to their unprecedented brightness and short pulse duration. However, time-resolved studies at the resolution of the x-ray pulse duration are hampered by the inability to precisely synchronize an external laser to the accelerator. At the Sub-Picosecond Pulse Source at the Stanford Linear-Accelerator Center we solved this problem by measuring the arrival time of each high energy electron bunch with electro-optic sampling. This measurement indirectly determined the arrival time of each x-ray pulse relative to an external pump laser pulse with a time resolution of better than 60 fs rms.

Abstract

The motion of atoms on interatomic potential energy surfaces is fundamental to the dynamics of liquids and solids. An accelerator-based source of femtosecond x-ray pulses allowed us to follow directly atomic displacements on an optically modified energy landscape, leading eventually to the transition from crystalline solid to disordered liquid. We show that, to first order in time, the dynamics are inertial, and we place constraints on the shape and curvature of the transition-state potential energy surface. Our measurements point toward analogies between this nonequilibrium phase transition and the short-time dynamics intrinsic to equilibrium liquids.

Abstract

The melting dynamics of laser excited InSb have been studied with femtosecond x-ray diffraction. These measurements observe the delayed onset of diffusive atomic motion, signaling the appearance of liquidlike dynamics. They also demonstrate that the root-mean-squared displacement in the [111] direction increases faster than in the [110] direction after the first 500 fs. This structural anisotropy indicates that the initially generated fluid differs significantly from the equilibrium liquid.
