Search

We report the white light flare rates for 10 ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) using \textit{Kepler K2} short cadence data. Among our sample stars, two have spectral type M6, three are M7, three are M8 and two are L0. Most of our targets are old low mass stars. We identify a total of 283 flares in all of the stars in our sample, with \textit{Kepler} energies in the range log \textit{E$_{Kp}$} $\sim$(29 - 33.5) erg. Using the maximum-likelihood method of line fitting, we find that the flare frequency distribution (FFD) for each star in our sample follows a power law with slope -$\alpha$ in range -(1.3-2.0). We find that cooler objects tend to have shallower slopes. For some of our targets, the FFD follows either a broken power law, or a power law with an exponential cutoff. For the L0 dwarf 2MASS J12321827-0951502, we find a very shallow slope (-$\alpha$ $=$ -1.3) in the \textit{Kepler} energy range (0.82-130)$\times$10$^{30}$ erg: this L0 dwarf has flare rates which are comparable to the rates of high energy flares in stars of earlier spectral types. In addition, we report photometry of two superflares: one on the L0 dwarf 2MASS J12321827-0951502 and another on the M7 dwarf 2MASS J08352366+1029318. In case of 2MASS J12321827-0951502, we report a flare brightening by a factor of $\sim$144 relative to the quiescent photospheric level. Likewise, for 2MASS J08352366+1029318, we report a flare brightening by a factor of $\sim$60 relative to the quiescent photospheric level. These two superflares have bolometric (UV/optical/infrared) energies 3.6 $\times$ 10$^{33}$ erg and 8.9 $\times$ 10$^{33}$ erg respectively, while the FWHM time scales are very short, $\sim$2 minutes. We present the first effort to aggregate, homogenize, and uniformly model the combined ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared dataset for the electromagnetic counterpart of the binary neutron star merger GW170817. By assembling all of the available data from 18 different papers and 46 different instruments, we are able to identify and mitigate systematic offsets between individual datasets, and to identify clear outlying measurements, with the resulting pruned and adjusted dataset offering an opportunity to expand the study of the kilonova. The unified dataset includes 647 individual flux measurements, spanning 0.45 to 29.4 days post-merger, and thus has greater constraining power for physical models than any single dataset. We test a number of semi-analytical models and find that the data are well modeled with a three-component kilonova model: a "blue" lanthanide-poor component with Mej~0.020 Msol and vej~0.27c; an intermediate opacity "purple" component with Mej~0.047 Msol and vej~0.15c; and a "red" lanthanide-rich component with Mej~0.011 Msol and vej~0.14c. We further explore the possibility of ejecta asymmetry and its impact on the estimated parameters. From the inferred parameters we draw conclusions about the physical mechanisms responsible for the various ejecta components, the properties of the neutron stars, and, combined with an up-to-date merger rate, the implications for r-process enrichment via this channel. Much of the progress made in time-domain astronomy is accomplished by relating observational multi-wavelength time series data to models derived from our understanding of physical laws. This goal is typically accomplished by dividing the task in two: collecting data (observing), and constructing models to represent that data (theorizing). Owing to the natural tendency for specialization, a disconnect can develop between the best available theories and the best available data, potentially delaying advances in our understanding new classes of transients. We introduce MOSFiT: the Modular Open-Source Fitter for Transients, a Python-based package that downloads transient datasets from open online catalogs (e.g., the Open Supernova Catalog), generates Monte Carlo ensembles of semi-analytical light curve fits to those datasets and their associated Bayesian parameter posteriors, and optionally delivers the fitting results back to those same catalogs to make them available to the rest of the community. MOSFiT is designed to help bridge the gap between observations and theory in time-domain astronomy; in addition to making the application of existing models and creation of new models as simple as possible, MOSFiT yields statistically robust predictions for transient characteristics, with a standard output format that includes all the setup information necessary to reproduce a given result. As large-scale surveys such as LSST discover entirely new classes of transients, tools such as MOSFiT will be critical for enabling rapid comparison of models against data in statistically consistent, reproducible, and scientifically beneficial ways., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted to ApJS. The duration-luminosity phase space of optical transients is used, mostly heuristically, to compare various classes of transient events, to explore the origin of new transients, and to influence optical survey observing strategies. For example, several observational searches have been guided by intriguing voids and gaps in this phase space. However we should ask: Do we expect to find transients in these voids given our understanding of the various heating sources operating in astrophysical transients? In this work, we explore a broad range of theoretical models and empirical relations to generate optical light curves and to populate the duration-luminosity phase space (DLPS). We explore transients powered by adiabatic expansion, radioactive decay, magnetar spin-down, and circumstellar interaction. For each heating source, we provide a concise summary of the basic physical processes, a physically motivated choice of model parameter ranges, an overall summary of the resulting light curves and their the occupied range in the DLPS, and how the various model input parameters affect the light curves. We specifically explore the key voids discussed in the literature: the intermediate luminosity gap between classical novae and supernovae, and short-duration transients (<10 days). We find that few physical models lead to transients that occupy these voids. Moreover, we find that only relativistic expansion can produce fast and luminous transients, while for all other heating sources, events with durations <10 days are dim (> -15 mag). Finally, we explore the detection potential of optical surveys (e.g., LSST) in the DLPS and quantify the notion that short-duration and dim transients are exponentially more difficult to discover in untargeted surveys., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures, submitted to ApJ; interactive figure: ashleyvillar.com/dlps

We present detailed multi-frequency, multi-epoch radio observations of GRB 140304A at $z=5.283$ from 1 to 86 GHz and 0.45 d to 89 d. The radio and mm data exhibit unusual multiple spectral components, which cannot be simply explained by standard forward and reverse shock scenarios. Through detailed multi-wavelength analysis spanning radio to X-rays, we constrain the forward shock parameters to $E_{\rm K, iso}\approx4.9\times10^{54}\,$erg, $A_* \approx 2.6\times10^{-2}$, $\epsilon_{\rm e}\approx2.5\times10^{-2}$, $\epsilon_{\rm B}\approx5.9\times10^{-2}$, $p\approx2.6$, and $\theta_{\rm jet}\approx1.1^{\circ}$, yielding a beaming corrected $\gamma$-ray and kinetic energy, $E_{\gamma}\approx2.3\times10^{49}\,$erg and $E_{\rm K}\approx9.5\times10^{50}\,$erg, respectively. We model the excess radio emission as due to a combination of a late-time reverse shock (RS) launched by a shell collision, which also produces a re-brightening in the X-rays at $\approx0.26\,$d, and either a standard RS or diffractive interstellar scintillation. Under the standard RS interpretation, we invoke consistency arguments between the forward and reverse shocks to derive a deceleration time, $t_{\rm dec}\approx100\,$s, the ejecta Lorentz factor, $\Gamma(t_{\rm dec})\approx300$, and a low RS magnetization, $R_{\rm B}\approx0.6$. Our observations highlight both the power of radio observations in capturing RS emission and thus constraining the properties of GRB ejecta and central engines, and the challenge presented by interstellar scintillation in conclusively identifying RS emission in GRB radio afterglows., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables; submitted to ApJ

We present the first results from a recently concluded study of GRBs at $z\gtrsim5$ with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). Spanning $1$ to $85.5$ GHz and 7 epochs from 1.5 to 82.3 d, our observations of GRB 140311A are the most detailed joint radio and millimeter observations of a GRB afterglow at $z\gtrsim5$ to date. In conjunction with optical/near-IR and X-ray data, the observations can be understood in the framework of radiation from a single blast wave shock with energy $E_{\rm K,iso}\approx8.5\times10^{53}$ erg expanding into a constant density environment with density, $n_0\approx8\,{\rm cm}^{-3}$. The X-ray and radio observations require a jet break at $t_{\rm jet}\approx0.6$ d, yielding an opening angle of $\theta_{\rm jet}\approx4^{\circ}$ and a beaming-corrected blast wave kinetic energy of $E_{\rm K}\approx2.2\times10^{50}$ erg. The results from our radio follow-up and multi-wavelength modeling lend credence to the hypothesis that detected high-redshift GRBs may be more tightly beamed than events at lower redshift. We do not find compelling evidence for reverse shock emission, which may be related to fast cooling driven by the moderately high circumburst density., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ

At redshift z=0.03, the recently-discovered SN 2017egm is the nearest Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN) to date, and first near the center of a massive spiral galaxy (NGC 3191). Using SDSS spectra of NGC 3191, we find a metallicity ~2 Z$_\odot$ at the nucleus and ~1.3 Z$_\odot$ for a star forming region at a radial offset similar to SN 2017egm. Archival radio-to-UV photometry reveals a star-formation rate ~15 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ (with ~70% dust-obscured), which can account for a Swift X-ray detection, and stellar mass ~$10^{10.7}$ M$_\odot$. We model the early UV-optical light curves with a magnetar central-engine model, using the Bayesian light curve fitting tool MOSFiT. The fits indicate ejecta mass 2-4 M$_\odot$, spin period 4-6 ms, magnetic field (0.7-1.7)$\times 10^{14}$G, and kinetic energy 1-2 $\times10^{51}$ erg. These parameters are consistent with the overall distributions for SLSNe, modeled by Nicholl et al (2017), although the derived mass and spin are towards the low end, possibly indicating enhanced loss of mass and angular momentum before explosion. This has two implications: (i) SLSNe can occur at solar metallicity, although with a low fraction ~10%; and (ii) metallicity has at most a modest effect on their properties. Both conclusions are in line with results for long gamma-ray bursts. Assuming a monotonic rise gives an explosion date MJD $57889\pm1$. However, a short-lived excess in the data relative to the best-fitting models may indicate an early-time `bump'. If confirmed, SN 2017egm would be the first SLSN with a spectrum during the bump-phase; this shows the same O II lines seen at maximum light, which may be an important clue for explaining these bumps., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We use the new Modular Open Source Fitter for Transients (MOSFiT) to model 38 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe). We fit their multicolour light curves with a magnetar spin-down model and present the posterior distributions of magnetar and ejecta parameters. The colour evolution can be well matched with a simple absorbed blackbody. We find the following medians (1$\sigma$ ranges): spin period 2.4 ms (1.2-4 ms); magnetic field $0.8\times 10^{14}$ G (0.2-1.8 $\times 10^{14}$ G); ejecta mass 4.8 Msun (2.2-12.9 Msun); kinetic energy $3.9\times 10^{51}$ erg (1.9-9.8 $\times 10^{51}$ erg). This significantly narrows the parameter space compared to our priors, showing that although the model is flexible, the parameter space relevant to SLSNe is well constrained by existing data. The requirement that the instantaneous engine power is $\sim 10^{44}$ erg at the light curve peak necessitates either a large rotational energy (P<2 ms), or more commonly that the spin-down and diffusion timescales be well-matched. We find no evidence for separate populations of fast- and slow-declining SLSNe, which instead form a continuum both in light curve widths and inferred parameters. Variations in the spectra are well explained through differences in spin-down power and photospheric radii at maximum-light. We find no correlations between any model parameters and the properties of SLSN host galaxies. Comparing our posteriors to stellar evolution models, we show that SLSNe require rapidly rotating (fastest 10%) massive stars (> 20 Msun), and that this is consistent with the observed SLSN rate. High mass, low metallicity, and likely binary interaction all serve to maintain rapid rotation essential for magnetar formation. By reproducing the full set of SLSN light curves, our posteriors can be used to inform photometric searches for SLSNe in future survey data.

While the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is a uniquely powerful telescope, its impact in certain fields of astrophysics has been limited by observatory policies rather than the telescope's innate technical capabilities. In particular, several observatory policies present challenges for observations of variable, mobile, and/or transient sources --- collectively referred to here as "time-domain" observations. In this whitepaper we identify some of these policies, describe the scientific applications they impair, and suggest changes that would increase ALMA's science impact in Cycle 6 and beyond. Gravitational wave observations need accompanying electromagnetic signals to accurately determine the sky positions of the sources. The ejecta of neutron star mergers are expected to produce such electromagnetic transients, called macronovae. Characteristics of the ejecta include large velocity gradients and the presence of heavy $r$-process elements, which pose significant challenges to the accurate calculation of radiative opacities and radiation transport. For example, these opacities include a dense forest of bound-bound features arising from near-neutral lanthanide and actinide elements. Here we investigate the use of fine-structure, line-smeared opacities that preserve the integral of the opacity over frequency, which is an alternative approach to the expansion-opacity formalism. The use of area-preserving line profiles produces frequency-dependent opacities that are one to two orders of magnitude greater than those obtained with the use of expansion opacities in the Sobolev approximation. Opacities are calculated for four $r$-process elements (cerium, neodymium, samarium and uranium) using fully and semi-relativistic methods, as well as different amounts of configuration interaction in the atomic structure, in order to test the sensitivity of the emission to the underlying atomic physics. We determine the effect of these new opacities on simulated spectra and broad-band light curves by applying a multi-dimensional ray-trace method to the ejecta predicted from 3-dimensional merger calculations. With our substantially larger opacities the simulations yield slightly lower luminosities that peak in the mid-IR. These results suggest that those radioactively powered transients that are related to the very heaviest $r$-process material are more difficult to observe than previously believed., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

Sub-arcsecond localization of the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102 revealed its coincidence with a dwarf host galaxy and a steady (`quiescent') non-thermal radio source. We show that the properties of the host galaxy are consistent with those of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRB) and hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I). Both LGRBs and SLSNe-I were previously hypothesized to be powered by the electromagnetic spin-down of newly-formed, strongly-magnetized neutron stars with millisecond birth rotation periods (`millisecond magnetars'). This motivates considering a scenario whereby the repeated bursts from FRB 121102 originate from a young magnetar remnant embedded within a young hydrogen-poor supernova remnant. Requirements on the GHz free-free optical depth through the expanding supernova ejecta (accounting for photo-ionization by the rotationally-powered magnetar nebula), energetic constraints on the bursts, and constraints on the size of the quiescent source all point to an age of less than a few decades to a century. The quiescent radio source can be attributed to synchrotron emission from the shock interaction between the fast outer layer of the supernova ejecta with the surrounding wind of the progenitor star, or from deeper within the magnetar wind nebula. Alternatively, the radio emission could be an orphan afterglow from an initially off-axis LGRB jet, though this might require the source to be too young. The young age of the source can be tested by searching for a time derivative of the dispersion measure and predicted fading of the quiescent radio source. We present the discovery of the X-ray and optical afterglows of the short-duration GRB 150101B, pinpointing the event to an early-type host galaxy at z=0.1343 +/- 0.0030. This makes GRB 150101B the most nearby short GRB with an early-type host galaxy discovered to date. Fitting the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy results in an inferred stellar mass of ~7x10^10 M_sol, stellar population age of ~2-2.5 Gyr, and star formation rate of <0.4 M_sol yr^-1. The host of GRB 150101B is one of the largest and most luminous short GRB host galaxies, with a B-band luminosity of ~4.3L* and half-light radius of ~8 kpc. GRB 150101B is located at a projected distance of 7.35 +/- 0.07 kpc from its host center, and lies on a faint region of its host rest-frame optical light. Its location, combined with the lack of associated supernova, is consistent with a NS-NS/NS-BH merger progenitor. From modeling the evolution of the broad-band afterglow, we calculate isotropic-equivalent gamma-ray and kinetic energies of ~1.3x10^49 erg and ~(6-14)x10^51 erg, respectively, a circumburst density of ~(0.8-4)x10^-5 cm^-3, and a jet opening angle of >9 deg. Using observations extending to ~30 days, we place upper limits of <(2-4)x10^41 erg s^-1 on associated kilonova emission. We compare searches following previous short GRBs to existing kilonova models, and demonstrate the difficulty of performing effective kilonova searches from cosmological short GRBs using current ground-based facilities. We show that at the Advanced LIGO/VIRGO horizon distance of 200 Mpc, searches reaching depths of ~23-24 AB mag are necessary to probe a meaningful range of kilonova models., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. We report on an ongoing project to investigate activity in the M dwarf stellar population observed by the Pan-STARRS 1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1-MDS). Using a custom-built pipeline, we refine an initial sample of $\approx$ 4 million sources in PS1-MDS to a sample of 184,148 candidate cool stars using color cuts. Motivated by the well-known relationship between rotation and stellar activity, we use a multi-band periodogram analysis and visual vetting to identify 271 sources that are likely rotating M dwarfs. We derive a new set of polynomials relating M dwarf PS1 colors to fundamental stellar parameters and use them to estimate the masses, distances, effective temperatures, and bolometric luminosities of our sample. We present a catalog containing these values, our measured rotation periods, and cross-matches to other surveys. Our final sample spans periods of $\lesssim$1-130 days in stars with estimated effective temperatures of $\approx$ 2700-4000 K. Twenty-two of our sources have X-ray cross-matches, and they are found to be relatively X-ray bright as would be expected from selection effects. Our data set provides evidence that Kepler-based searches have not been sensitive to very slowly-rotating stars ($P_{\rm rot} \gtrsim 70$ d), implying that the observed emergence of very slow rotators in studies of low-mass stars may be a systematic effect. We also see a lack of low-amplitude ($<$2%) variability in objects with intermediate (10-40 d) rotation periods, which, considered in conjunction with other observational results, may be a signpost of a loss of magnetic complexity associated with a phase of rapid spin-down in intermediate-age M dwarfs. We present a simultaneous, multi-wavelength campaign targeting the nearby (7.2 pc) L8/L9 (optical/near-infrared) dwarf WISEP J060738.65+242953.4 in the mid-infrared, radio, and optical. Spitzer Space Telescope observations show no variability at the 0.2% level over 10 hours each in the 3.6 and 4.5 micron bands. Kepler K2 monitoring over 36 days in Campaign 0 rules out stable periodic signals in the optical with amplitudes great than 1.5% and periods between 1.5 hours and 2 days. Non-simultaneous Gemini optical spectroscopy detects lithium, constraining this L dwarf to be less than ~2 Gyr old, but no Balmer emission is observed. The low measured projected rotation velocity (v sin i < 6 km/s) and lack of variability are very unusual compared to other brown dwarfs, and we argue that this substellar object is likely viewed pole-on. We detect quiescent (non-bursting) radio emission with the VLA. Amongst radio detected L and T dwarfs, it has the lowest observed L_nu and the lowest v sin i. The merger of a neutron star binary may result in the formation of a rapidly-spinning magnetar. The magnetar can potentially survive for seconds or longer as a supramassive neutron star before collapsing to a black hole if, indeed, it collapses at all. During this process, a fraction of the magnetar's rotational energy of ~10^53 erg is transferred via magnetic spin-down to the surrounding ejecta. The resulting interaction between the ejecta and the surrounding circumburst medium powers a >year-long synchrotron radio transient. We present a search for radio emission with the Very Large Array following nine short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at rest-frame times of ~1.3-7.6 years after the bursts, focusing on those events which exhibit early-time excess X-ray emission that may signify the presence of magnetars. We place upper limits of <18-32 microJy on the 6.0 GHz radio emission, corresponding to spectral luminosities of <(0.05-8.3)x10^39 erg s^-1. Comparing these limits to the predicted radio emission from a long-lived remnant and incorporating measurements of the circumburst densities from broad-band modeling of short GRB afterglows, we rule out a stable magnetar with an energy of 10^53 erg for half of the events in our sample. A supramassive remnant that injects a lower rotational energy of 10^52 erg is ruled out for a single event, GRB 050724A. This study represents the deepest and most extensive search for long-term radio emission following short GRBs to date, and thus the most stringent limits placed on the physical properties of magnetars associated with short GRBs from radio observations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. We present the second multi-frequency radio detection of a reverse shock in a $\gamma$-ray burst. By combining our extensive radio observations of the Fermi-LAT GRB 160509A at $z = 1.17$ up to $20$ days after the burst with Swift X-ray observations and ground-based optical and near-infrared data, we show that the afterglow emission comprises distinct reverse shock and forward shock contributions: the reverse shock emission dominates in the radio band at $\lesssim10~$days, while the forward shock emission dominates in the X-ray, optical, and near-infrared bands. Through multi-wavelength modeling, we determine a circumburst density of $n_0\approx10^{-3}~$cm$^{-3}$, supporting our previous suggestion that a low-density circumburst environment is conducive to the production of long-lasting reverse shock radiation in the radio band. We infer the presence of a large excess X-ray absorption column, $N_{\rm H} \approx 1.5\times10^{22}~$cm$^{-2}$, and a high rest-frame optical extinction, $A_{\rm V}\approx3.4~$mag. We identify a jet break in the X-ray light curve at $t_{\rm jet}\approx6~$d, and thus derive a jet opening angle of $\theta_{\rm jet}\approx4~$deg, yielding a beaming-corrected kinetic energy and radiated $\gamma$-ray energy of $E_{\rm K}\approx4\times10^{50}~$erg and $E_{\gamma}\approx1.3\times10^{51}~$erg ($1$-$10^4~$keV, rest frame), respectively. Consistency arguments connecting the forward and reverse shocks suggest a deceleration time of $t_{\rm dec} \approx 460~$s$~\approx T_{90}$, a Lorentz factor of $\Gamma(t_{\rm dec})\approx330$, and a reverse shock to forward shock fractional magnetic energy density ratio of $R_{\rm B}\equiv\epsilon_{\rm B,RS}/\epsilon_{\rm B,FS}\approx8$., Comment: 8 pages, 2 tables, 4 figures. We present novel tests of pre$-$main-sequence models based on individual dynamical masses for the M7 binary LSPM J1314+1320AB. Joint analysis of our Keck adaptive optics astrometric monitoring along with Very Long Baseline Array radio data from a companion paper yield component masses of $0.0885\pm0.0006$ $M_{\odot}$ and $0.0875\pm0.0010$ $M_{\odot}$ and a parallactic distance of $17.249\pm0.013$ pc. We also derive component luminosities that are consistent with the system being coeval at an age of $80.8\pm2.5$ Myr, according to BHAC15 evolutionary models. The presence of lithium is consistent with model predictions, marking the first time the theoretical lithium depletion boundary has been tested with ultracool dwarfs of known mass. However, we find that the average evolutionary model-derived effective temperature ($2950\pm5$ K) is 180 K hotter than we derive from a spectral type$-$$T_{\rm eff}$ relation based on BT-Settl models ($2770\pm100$ K). We suggest that the dominant source of this discrepancy is model radii being too small by $\approx$13%. In a test that mimics the typical application of evolutionary models by observers, we derive masses on the H-R diagram using the luminosity and BT-Settl temperature. The estimated masses are $46^{+16}_{-19}$% (2.0$\sigma$) lower than we measure dynamically and would imply that this is a system of $\approx$50 $M_{\rm Jup}$ brown dwarfs, highlighting the large systematic errors possible when inferring masses from the H-R diagram. This is first time masses have been measured for ultracool ($\geq$M6) dwarfs displaying spectral signatures of low gravity. Based on features in the infrared, LSPM J1314+1320AB appears higher gravity than typical Pleiades and AB Dor members, opposite the expectation given its younger age. The components of LSPM J1314+1320AB are now the nearest, lowest mass pre$-$main-sequence stars with direct mass measurements., Comment: ApJ, in press

We present multi-epoch astrometric radio observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the young ultracool-dwarf binary LSPM J1314+1320AB . The radio emission comes from the secondary star. Combining the VLBA data with Keck near-infrared adaptive-optics observations of both components, a full astrometric fit of parallax ($\pi_{\rm abs}=57.975\pm0.045$ mas, corresponding to a distance of $d=17.249\pm0.013$ pc), proper motion ($\mu_{\rm \alpha cos \delta}=-247.99\pm0.10$ mas yr$^{-1}$, $\mu_{\delta}=-183.58\pm0.22$ mas yr$^{-1}$), and orbital motion is obtained. Despite the fact that the two components have nearly identical masses to within $\pm2$%, the secondary's radio emission exceeds that of the primary by a factor of $\gtrsim$30, suggesting a difference in stellar rotation history, which could result in different magnetic field configurations. Alternatively, the emission could be anisotropic and beamed toward us for the secondary but not for the primary. Using only reflex motion, we exclude planets of mass 0.7 to 10 $M_{\rm jup}$ with orbital periods of 600 to 10 days, respectively. Additionally, we use the full orbital solution of the binary to derive an upper limit for the semi-major axis of 0.23 AU for stable planetary orbits within this system. These limits cover a parameter space that is inaccessible with, and complementary to, near-infrared radial velocity surveys of ultracool dwarfs. We present optical spectroscopy, ultraviolet to infrared imaging and X-ray observations of the intermediate luminosity optical transient (ILOT) SN 2010da in NGC 300 (d=1.86 Mpc) spanning from -6 to +6 years relative to the time of outburst in 2010. Based on the light curve and multi-epoch SEDs of SN 2010da, we conclude that the progenitor of SN 2010da is a ~10-12 Msol yellow supergiant possibly transitioning into a blue loop phase. During outburst, SN 2010da had a peak absolute magnitude of M<-10.4 mag, dimmer than other ILOTs and supernova impostors. We detect multi-component hydrogen Balmer, Paschen, and Ca II emission lines in our high-resolution spectra, which indicate a dusty and complex circumstellar environment. Since the 2010 eruption, the star has brightened by a factor of ~5 and remains highly variable in the optical. Furthermore, we detect SN 2010da in archival Swift and Chandra observations as an ultraluminous X-ray source (L~6x10^{39} erg/s). We additionally attribute He II 4686 Angstrom and coronal Fe emission lines in addition to a steady X-ray luminosity of ~10^{37} erg/s to the presence of a compact companion., Comment: published; updated citations and other minor edits

We report the discovery of transient radio emission from the nearby optically-discovered TDE ASASSN-14li (distance of 90 Mpc), making it the first typical TDE detected in the radio, and unambiguously pointing to the formation of a non-relativistic outflow with a kinetic energy of $\approx (4-10)\times10^{47}$ erg, a velocity of $\approx 12,000-36,000$ km s$^{-1}$, and a mass of $\approx 3\times10^{-5}-7\times10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. We show that the outflow was ejected on 2014 August 11--25, in agreement with an independent estimate of the timing of super-Eddington accretion based on the optical, UV, and X-ray observations, and that the ejected mass corresponds to about $1-10\%$ of the mass accreted in the super-Eddington phase. The temporal evolution of the radio emission also uncovers the circumnuclear density profile, $\rho(R)\propto R^{-2.5}$ on a scale of about 0.01 pc, a scale that cannot be probed via direct measurements even in the nearest SMBHs. Our discovery of radio emission from the nearest well-studied TDE to date, with a radio luminosity lower than all previous limits, indicates that non-relativistic outflows are ubiquitous in TDEs, and that future, more sensitive, radio surveys will uncover similar events., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables; published in ApJ Letters. The kinetic energy of a star in orbit about a supermassive black hole is a significant fraction of its rest mass energy when its periapse is comparable to its tidal radius. Upon its destruction, a fraction of this energy is extracted and injected into the stellar debris, half of which becomes unbound from the black hole, with the fastest material moving at $\sim 0.03 c$. In this paper, we present a formalism for determining the fate of these unbound debris streams (UDSs) as they depart from the black hole and interact with the surrounding gas. As the density and velocity varies along the length of a UDS, we find that hydrodynamical drag quickly shapes UDSs into loop-like structures, with the densest portions of the streams leading portions of lower density. As UDSs travel outwards, their drag against the ISM increases quadratically with distance, which causes UDSs to deposit their momentum and energy into the ambient medium before the surrounding shocked ISM has a chance to cool. This sudden injection of $\sim 10^{50}$ erg into the ambient medium generates a Sedov-like unbound debris remnant (UDR) that mimics supernova remnants (SNRs) in energetics and appearance, accelerates particles which will produce cosmic rays and synchrotron emission, and provides momentum feedback into the molecular clouds surrounding a black hole. We estimate that a few of these UDRs might be present within a couple degrees of the Galactic Center masquerading as SNRs, and that the UDR scenario is a plausible explanation for Sgr A East., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. [Abridged] We present the results of an extensive Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging study of ~100 Swift long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) spanning 0.03 < z < 9.4 using relative astrometry from afterglow observations to locate the bursts within their host galaxies. We measure the distribution of LGRB offsets from their host centers, as well as their relation to the underlying host light distribution. We find that the host-normalized offsets (R/R_h) of LGRBs are more centrally concentrated than expected for an exponential disk profile, with a median of 0.67, and in particular they are more concentrated than the underlying surface brightness profiles of their host galaxies. The distribution of offsets is inconsistent with the distribution for Type II supernovae (SNe) but consistent with the distribution for Type Ib/c SNe. The fractional flux distribution, with a median of 0.75, indicates that LGRBs prefer some of the brightest locations in their host galaxies but are not as strongly correlated as previous studies indicated. More importantly, we find a clear correlation between the offset and fractional flux, where bursts at R/R_h < 0.5 exclusively occur at fractional fluxes > 0.6 while bursts at R/R_h > 0.5 uniformly trace the light of their hosts. This indicates that the spatial correlation of LGRB locations with bright star forming regions seen in the full sample is dominated by the contribution from bursts at small offset and that LGRBs in the outer parts of galaxies show no preference for unusually bright star forming regions. We conclude that LGRBs strongly prefer the bright, inner regions of their hosts indicating that the star formation taking place there is more favorable for LGRB progenitor production. We present Kepler, Spitzer Space Telescope, Gemini-North, MMT, and Kitt Peak observations of the L1 dwarf WISEP J190648.47+401106.8. We find that the Kepler optical light curve is consistent in phase and amplitude over the nearly two years of monitoring with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 1.4%. Spitzer Infrared Array Camera 3.6 micron observations are in phase with Kepler with similar light curve shape and peak-to-peak amplitude 1.1%, but at 4.5 micron, the variability has amplitude $<$0.1%. Chromospheric H$\alpha$ emission is variable but not synced with the stable Kepler light curve. A single dark spot can reproduce the light curve but is not a unique solution. An inhomogeneous cloud deck, specifically a region of thick cloud cover, can explain the multi-wavelength data of this ultracool dwarf and need not be coupled with the asynchronous magnetic emission variations. The long life of the cloud is in contrast with weather changes seen in cooler brown dwarfs on the timescale of hours and days., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present a comprehensive catalog and analysis of broad-band afterglow observations for 103 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), comprised of all short GRBs from November 2004 to March 2015 with prompt follow-up observations in the X-ray, optical, near-infrared and/or radio bands. These afterglow observations have uncovered 71 X-ray detections, 30 optical/NIR detections, and 4 radio detections. Employing the standard afterglow synchrotron model, we perform joint probability analyses for a subset of 38 short GRBs with well-sampled light curves to infer the burst isotropic-equivalent energies and circumburst densities. For this subset, we find median isotropic-equivalent gamma-ray and kinetic energies of E_gamma,iso~2x10^51 erg, and E_K,iso~(1-3)x10^51 erg, respectively, depending on the values of the model input parameters. We further find that short GRBs occur in low-density environments, with a median density of n~(3-15)x10^-3 cm^-3, and that ~80-95% of bursts have densities of less than 1 cm^-3. We investigate trends between the circumburst densities and host galaxy properties, and find that events located at large projected offsets of >10 effective radii from their hosts exhibit particularly low densities of n<10^-4 cm^-3, consistent with an IGM-like environment. Using late-time afterglow data for 11 events, we find a median jet opening angle of theta_jet=16+/-10 deg. We also calculate a median beaming factor of f_b~0.04, leading to a beaming-corrected total energy release of E_true~1.6x10^50 erg. We present multi-wavelength observations and modeling of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) that exhibit a simultaneous re-brightening in their X-ray and optical light curves, and are also detected at radio wavelengths. We show that the re-brightening episodes can be modeled by injection of energy into the blastwave and that in all cases the energy injection rate falls within the theoretical bounds expected for a distribution of energy with ejecta Lorentz factor. Our measured values of the circumburst density, jet opening angle, and beaming corrected kinetic energy are consistent with the distribution of these parameters for long-duration GRBs at both z~1 and z>6, suggesting that the jet launching mechanism and environment of these events are similar to that of GRBs that do not have bumps in their light curves. However, events exhibiting re-brightening episodes have lower radiative efficiencies than average, suggesting that a majority of the kinetic energy of the outflow is carried by slow-moving ejecta, which is further supported by steep measured distributions of the ejecta energy as a function of Lorentz factor. We do not find evidence for reverse shocks over the energy injection period, implying that the onset of energy injection is a gentle process. We further show that GRBs exhibiting simultaneous X-ray and optical re-brightenings are likely the tail of a distribution of events with varying rates of energy injection, forming the most extreme events in their class. Future X-ray observations of GRB afterglows with Swift and its successors will thus likely discover several more such events, while radio follow-up and multi-wavelength modeling of similar events will unveil the role of energy injection in GRB afterglows., Comment: 40 pages, 38 figures, 9 tables. The impending era of wide-field radio surveys has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of astrophysical transients. Here we evaluate the prospects of a wide range of planned and hypothetical radio surveys using the properties and volumetric rates of known and hypothetical classes of extragalactic synchrotron radio transients (e.g., on- and off-axis gamma-ray bursts [GRB], supernovae, tidal disruption events [TDE], compact object mergers). Utilizing these sources and physically motivated considerations we assess the allowed phase-space of radio luminosity and peak timescale for extragalactic transients. We also include for the first time effects such as redshift evolution of the rates, K-corrections, and non-Euclidean luminosity distance, which affect the detection rates of the most sensitive surveys. The number of detected events is calculated by means of a Monte Carlo method, using the various survey properties (depth, cadence, area) and realistic detection criteria that include a cut on the minimum variability of the transients during the survey and an assessment of host galaxy contamination. Near-term GHz frequency surveys (ASKAP/VAST, Very Large Array Sky Survey) will detect few events: <~30-50 on- and off-axis long GRBs and off-axis tidal disruption events, and ~10-20 neutron star binary mergers if ~1% of the mergers result in a stable millisecond magnetar. Low-frequency surveys (e.g., LOFAR) are unlikely to detect any transients, while a hypothetical large-scale mm survey may detect ~40 on-axis long GRBs. On the other hand, SKA surveys at ~0.1-1 GHz have the potential to uncover thousands of transients, mainly on- and off-axis long GRBs, on-axis short GRBs, off-axis TDEs, and neutron star binary mergers with magnetar remnants., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, 1 appendix, submitted to ApJ

In the last three decades, about 50 radio supernovae have been detected as a result of targeted searches of optically discovered supernovae in the local universe. Despite this relatively small number some diversity among them has already been identified which is an indication of the underlying richness of radio supernovae waiting to be discovered. For example, comparison of star formation and supernova discovery rate imply that as many as half of the supernovae remain undetected in the traditional optical searches, either because of intrinsic dimness or due to dust obscuration. This has far reaching consequences to the models of stellar and galaxy evolution. A radio sky survey would be ideal to uncover larger supernova population. Transient radio sky would benefit significantly from such a survey. With the advent of advanced gravitational wave detectors a new window is set to open on the local Universe. Localization of these gravitational detectors is poor to identify electromagnetic counterparts of the gravitational wave sources. However, the longer lasting radio emission accompanied in these sources could be effectively identified in a radio sky survey. We advocate a medium area ($\approx$ a few thousand $\rm deg^{2}$) radio sky survey at C-band. Alternatively, a survey at S-band has advantage of larger sky coverage without serious loss of the science case as presented here. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) display a bimodal duration distribution, with a separation between the short- and long-duration bursts at about 2 sec. The progenitors of long GRBs have been identified as massive stars based on their association with Type Ic core-collapse supernovae, their exclusive location in star-forming galaxies, and their strong correlation with bright ultraviolet regions within their host galaxies. Short GRBs have long been suspected on theoretical grounds to arise from compact object binary mergers (NS-NS or NS-BH). The discovery of short GRB afterglows in 2005, provided the first insight into their energy scale and environments, established a cosmological origin, a mix of host galaxy types, and an absence of associated supernovae. In this review I summarize nearly a decade of short GRB afterglow and host galaxy observations, and use this information to shed light on the nature and properties of their progenitors, the energy scale and collimation of the relativistic outflow, and the properties of the circumburst environments. The preponderance of the evidence points to compact object binary progenitors, although some open questions remain. We report on the results of fifteen months of monitoring the nearby field L1 dwarf WISEP J190648.47+401106.8 (W1906+40) with the Kepler mission. Supporting observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and Gemini North telescope reveal that the L dwarf is magnetically active, with quiescent radio and variable H$\alpha$ emission. A preliminary trigonometric parallax shows that W1906+40 is at a distance of $16.35^{+0.36}_{-0.34}$ pc, and all observations are consistent with W1906+40 being an old disk star just above the hydrogen-burning limit. The star shows photometric variability with a period of 8.9 hours and an amplitude of 1.5%, with a consistent phase throughout the year. We infer a radius of $0.92 \pm 0.07 R_J$ and $\sin i > 0.57$ from the observed period, luminosity ($10^{-3.67 \pm 0.03} L_\odot$), effective temperature ($2300 \pm 75$K), and $v \sin i$ ($11.2 \pm 2.2$ km/s). The light curve may be modeled with a single large, high latitude dark spot. Unlike many L-type brown dwarfs, there is no evidence of other variations at the $\gtrsim 2%$ level, either non-periodic or transient periodic, that mask the underlying rotation period. We suggest that the long-lived surface features may be due to starspots, but the possibility of cloud variations cannot be ruled out without further multi-wavelength observations. During the Gemini spectroscopy, we observed the most powerful flare ever seen on an L dwarf, with an estimated energy of $\sim 1.6 \times 10^{32}$ ergs in white light emission. Using the Kepler data, we identify similar flares and estimate that white light flares with optical/ultraviolet energies of $10^{31}$ ergs or more occur on W1906+40 as often as 1-2 times per month., Comment: accepted to ApJ

We present radio, optical/NIR, and X-ray observations of the afterglow of the short-duration 130603B, and uncover a break in the radio and optical bands at 0.5 d after the burst, best explained as a jet break with an inferred jet opening angle of 4-8 deg. GRB 130603B is only the third short GRB with a radio afterglow detection to date, and the first time that a jet break is evident in the radio band. We model the temporal evolution of the spectral energy distribution to determine the burst explosion properties and find an isotropic-equivalent kinetic energy of (0.6-1.7) x 10^51 erg and a circumburst density of 5 x 10^-3-30 cm^-3. From the inferred opening angle of GRB 130603B, we calculate beaming-corrected energies of Egamma (0.5-2) x 10^49 erg and EK (0.1-1.6) x 10^49 erg. Along with previous measurements and lower limits we find a median short GRB opening angle of 10 deg. Using the all-sky observed rate of 10 Gpc^-3 yr^-1, this implies a true short GRB rate of 20 yr^-1 within 200 Mpc, the Advanced LIGO/VIRGO sensitivity range for neutron star binary mergers. Finally, we uncover evidence for significant excess emission in the X-ray afterglow of GRB 130603B at >1 d and conclude that the additional energy component could be due to fall-back accretion or spin-down energy from a magnetar formed following the merger., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; emulateapj style; 10 pages, 1 table, 3 figures

We conducted multi-epoch VLBI observations to search for astrometric reflex motion caused by a sub-stellar companion of the M8.5 dwarf TVLM 513-46546. The observations yield an absolute parallax corresponding to a distance of 10.762+/-0.027 pc and a proper motion of 78.09+/-0.17 mas/yr. From the absence of significant residual motion, we place an upper limit to any reflex motion caused by a companion, extending the parameter space covered by previous near-infrared direct-imaging searches. By covering different orbital periods, the data exclude a phase-space of companion masses and orbital periods ranging from 3.8 Mjup with an orbital radius of ~0.05 AU (orbital period of 16 days) to 0.3 Mjup with an orbital radius of ~0.7 AU (orbital period of 710 days)., Comment: 8 pages, submitted to ApJ

We present a detailed investigation of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) rest-frame UV/optical observations of 22 short gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies and sub-galactic environments. Utilizing the high angular resolution and depth of HST, we characterize the host galaxy morphologies, measure precise projected physical and host-normalized offsets between the bursts and host centers, and calculate the locations of the bursts with respect to their host light distributions (rest-frame UV and optical). We calculate a median short GRB projected physical offset of 4.5 kpc, about 3.5 times larger than that for long GRBs, and find that ~25% of short GRBs have offsets of >10 kpc. When compared to their host sizes, the median offset is 1.5 half-light radii (r_e), about 1.5 times larger than the values for long GRBs, core-collapse supernovae, and Type Ia supernovae. In addition, ~20% of short GRBs having offsets of >5 r_e, and only ~25% are located within 1 r_e. We further find that short GRBs severely under-represent their hosts' rest-frame optical and UV light, with ~30-45% of the bursts located in regions of their host galaxies that have no detectable stellar light, and ~55% in the regions with no UV light. Therefore, short GRBs do not occur in regions of star formation or even stellar mass. This demonstrates that the progenitor systems of short GRBs must migrate from their birth sites to their eventual explosion sites, a signature of kicks in compact object binary systems. Utilizing the full sample of offsets, we estimate natal kick velocities of ~20-140 km s^-1. We present high signal-to-noise ratio Gemini and MMT spectroscopy of the optical afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130606A at redshift z=5.913, discovered by Swift. This is the first high-redshift GRB afterglow to have spectra of comparable quality to those of z~6 quasars. The data exhibit a smooth continuum at near-infrared wavelengths that is sharply cut off blueward of 8410 Angs due to absorption from Ly-alpha at redshift z~5.91, with some flux transmitted through the Ly-alpha forest between 7000-7800 Angs. We use column densities inferred from metal absorption lines to constrain the metallicity of the host galaxy between a lower limit of [Si/H]>-1.7 and an upper limit of [S/H]<-0.5 set by the non-detection of S II absorption. We demonstrate consistency between the dramatic evolution in the transmission fraction of Ly-alpha seen in this spectrum over the redshift range z=4.9 to 5.85 with that previously measured from observations of high-redshift quasars. There is an extended redshift interval of Delta-z=0.12 in the Ly-alpha forest at z=5.77 with no detected transmission, leading to a 3-sigma upper limit on the mean Ly-alpha transmission fraction of <0.2% (or tau_eff(Ly-alpha) > 6.4). This is comparable to the lowest-redshift Gunn-Peterson troughs found in quasar spectra. We set a 2-sigma upper limit of 0.11 on the neutral fraction of the IGM at the redshift of the GRB from the lack of a Ly-alpha red damping wing, assuming a model with a constant neutral density. Some Ly-beta and Ly-gamma transmission is detected in this redshift window, indicating that it is not completely opaque, and hence that the IGM is nonetheless mostly ionized at these redshifts. We present observations of the afterglows and host galaxies of three short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs): 100625A, 101219A and 110112A. We find that GRB 100625A occurred in a z=0.452 early-type galaxy with a stellar mass of 4.6e9 M_Sun and a stellar population age of 0.7 Gyr, and GRB 101219A originated in a star-forming galaxy at z=0.718 with a stellar mass of 1.4e9 M_Sun, a star formation rate of 16 M_Sun yr^-1, and a stellar population age of 50 Myr. We also report the discovery of the optical afterglow of GRB 110112A, which lacks a coincident host galaxy to i>26 mag and we cannot conclusively identify any field galaxy as a possible host. The bursts have inferred circumburst densities of ~1e-4-1 cm^-3, and isotropic-equivalent gamma-ray and kinetic energies of 1e50-1e51 erg. These events highlight the diversity of galaxies that host short GRBs. To quantify this diversity, we use the sample of 36 Swift short GRBs with robust associations to an environment (~1/2 of 68 short bursts detected by Swift to May 2012) and classify them as follows: late-type (50%), early-type (15%), inconclusive (20%), and host-less (lacking a coincident host galaxy to limits of >26 mag; 15%). To find likely ranges for the true late- and early-type fractions, we assign each of the host-less bursts to the late- or early-type category using probabilistic arguments, and consider the scenario that all hosts in the inconclusive category are early-type galaxies to set an upper bound on the early-type fraction. The most likely ranges for the late- and early-type fractions are ~60-80% and ~20-40%, respectively. We find no clear trend between gamma-ray duration and host type, and no change to the fractions when excluding events recently claimed as possible contaminants from the long GRB/collapsar population. For Gamma-Ray Burst 100901A, we have obtained Gemini-North and Very Large Telescope optical afterglow spectra at four epochs: one hour, one day, three days and one week after the burst, thanks to the afterglow remaining unusually bright at late times. Apart from a wealth of metal resonance lines, we also detect lines arising from fine-structure levels of the ground state of Fe II, and from metastable levels of Fe II and Ni II at the host redshift (z = 1.4084). These lines are found to vary significantly in time. The combination of the data and modelling results shows that we detect the fall of the Ni II 4 F9/2 metastable level population, which to date has not been observed. Assuming that the population of the excited states is due to the UV-radiation of the afterglow, we estimate an absorber distance of a few hundred pc. This appears to be a typical value when compared to similar studies. We detect two intervening absorbers (z = 1.3147, 1.3179). Radio detections of ultracool dwarfs provide insight into their magnetic fields and the dynamos that maintain them, especially at the very bottom of the main sequence, where other activity indicators dramatically weaken. Until recently, radio emission was only detected in the M and L dwarf regimes, but this has changed with the Arecibo detection of rapid polarized flares from the T6.5 dwarf 2MASS J10475385+2124234. Here, we report the detection of quasi-quiescent radio emission from this source at 5.8 GHz using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. The luminosity is {\nu}L_{\nu} = (1.3 +- 0.4) x 10^22 erg/s, a factor of ~100 times fainter than the Arecibo flares. Our detection is the lowest-luminosity yet achieved for an ultracool dwarf. Although the emission is fully consistent with being steady, unpolarized, and broadband, we find tantalizing hints for variability. We exclude the presence of short-duration flares as seen by Arecibo, although this is not unexpected given estimates of the duty cycle. Follow-up observations of this object will offer the potential to constrain its rotation period, electron density, and the strength and configuration of the magnetic field. Equally important, follow-up will address the question of whether the electron cyclotron maser instability, which is thought to produce the flares seen by Arecibo, also operates in the very different parameter regime of the emission we detect, or whether instead this ultracool dwarf exhibits both maser and gyrosynchrotron radiation, potentially originating from substantially different locations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; ApJ Letters in press

We report the detection of radio emission from the unusually active L5e + T7 binary 2MASS J13153094-2649513AB made with the Australian Telescope Compact Array. Observations at 5.5 GHz reveal an unresolved source with a continuum flux of 370+/-50 microJy, corresponding to a radio luminosity of L_rad = nuL_nu = (9+/-3)x10^23 erg/s and log10(L_rad/L_bol) = -5.44+/-0.22. No detection is made at 9.0 GHz to a 5 sigma limit of 290 microJy, consistent with a power law spectrum S_nu ~ nu^-a with a > 0.5. The emission is quiescent, with no evidence of variability or bursts over 3 hr of observation, and no measurable polarization (V/I < 34%). 2MASS J1315-2649AB is one of the most radio-luminous ultracool dwarfs detected in quiescent emission to date, comparable in strength to other cool sources detected in outburst. Its detection indicates no decline in radio flux through the mid-L dwarfs. It is unique among L dwarfs in having strong and persistent Halpha and radio emission, indicating the coexistence of a cool, neutral photosphere (low electron density) and a highly active chromosphere (high electron density and active heating). Identifying the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave (GW) sources detected by upcoming networks of advanced ground-based interferometers will be challenging due in part to the large number of unrelated astrophysical transients within the ~10-100 square degree sky localizations. A potential way to greatly reduce the number of such false positives is to limit detailed follow-up to only those candidates near galaxies within the GW sensitivity range of ~200 Mpc for binary neutron star mergers. Such a strategy is currently hindered by the fact that galaxy catalogs are grossly incomplete within this volume. Here we compare two methods for completing the local galaxy catalog: (1) a narrow-band H-alpha imaging survey; and (2) an HI emission line radio survey. Using H-alpha fluxes, stellar masses (M_star), and star formation rates (SFR) from galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), combined with HI data from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey and the Herschel Reference Survey, we estimate that a H-alpha survey with a luminosity sensitivity of L_H-alpha = 1e40 erg/s at 200 Mpc could achieve a completeness of f_SFR ~ 75% with respect to total SFR, but only f_Mstar ~ 33% with respect to stellar mass (due to lack of sensitivity to early-type galaxies). These numbers are significantly lower than those achieved by an idealized spectroscopic survey due to the loss of H-alpha flux resulting from resolving out nearby galaxies and the inability to correct for the underlying stellar continuum. An HI survey with sensitivity similar to the proposed WALLABY survey on ASKAP could achieve f_SFR ~ 80% and f_Mstar ~ 50%, somewhat higher than that of the H-alpha survey. Finally, both H-alpha and HI surveys should achieve > 50% completeness with respect to the host galaxies of short duration gamma-ray bursts, which may trace the population of binary neutron star mergers., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

The precise origin of short gamma ray bursts (SGRBs) remains an important open question in relativistic astrophysics. Increasingly, observational evidence suggests the merger of a binary compact object system as the source for most SGRBs, but it is currently unclear how to distinguish observationally between a binary neutron star progenitor and a black hole-neutron star progenitor. We suggest the quasi-periodic signal of jet precession as an observational signature of SGRBs originating in mixed binary systems, and quantify both the fraction of mixed binaries capable of producing SGRBs, and the distributions of precession amplitudes and periods. The difficulty inherent in disrupting a neutron star outside the horizon of a stellar-mass black hole biases the jet precession signal towards low amplitude and high frequency. Precession periods of ~ 0.01-0.1 s and disk-BH spin misalignments ~10 degrees are generally expected, although sufficiently high viscosity may prevent the accumulation of multiple precession periods during the SGRB. GRB 120422A is a nearby (z = 0.283) long-duration GRB (LGRB) detected by Swift with E(gamma,iso) ~ 4.5\times1049 erg. It is also associated with the spectroscopically-confirmed broad-lined Type Ic SN 2012bz. These properties establish GRB 120422A/SN 2012bz as the sixth and newest member of the class of subluminous GRB/SNe. Observations also show that GRB 120422A/SN 2012bz occurred at an unusually large offset (~8 kpc) from the host galaxy nucleus, setting it apart from other nearby LGRBs and leading to speculation that the host environment may have undergone prior interaction activity. Here we present spectroscopic observations using the 6.5m Magellan telescope at Las Campanas. We extract spectra at three specific locations within the GRB/SN host galaxy, including the host nucleus, the explosion site, and the "bridge" of diffuse emission connecting these two regions. We measure a metallicity of log(O/H) + 12 = 8.3 +/- 0.1 and a star formation rate per unit area of 0.08 Mo/yr/kpc^2 at the host nucleus. At the GRB/SN explosion site we measure a comparable metallicity of log(O/H) + 12 = 8.2 +/- 0.1, but find a much lower star formation rate per unit area of 0.01 M/yr/kpc^2. We also compare the host galaxy of this event to the hosts other LGRBs, including samples of subluminous LGRBs and cosmological LGRBs, and find no systematic metallicity difference between the environments of these different subtypes., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the largest spectroscopic study of the host environments of Type Ibc supernovae (SN Ibc) discovered exclusively by untargeted SN searches. Past studies of SN Ibc host environments have been biased towards high-mass, high-metallicity galaxies by focusing on SNe discovered in galaxy-targeted SN searches. Our new observations more than double the total number of spectroscopic stellar population age and metallicity measurements published for untargeted SN Ibc host environments, and extend to a median redshift about twice as large as previous statistical studies (z = 0.04). For the 12 SNe Ib and 21 SNe Ic in our metallicity sample, we find median metallicities of log(O/H)+12 = 8.48 and 8.61, respectively, but determine that the discrepancy in the full distribution of metallicities is not statistically significant. This median difference would correspond to only a small difference in the mass loss via metal-line driven winds (<30%), suggesting this does not play the dominant role in distinguishing SN Ib and Ic progenitors. However, the median metallicity of the 7 broad-lined SN Ic (SN Ic-BL) in our sample is significantly lower, log(O/H)+12 = 8.34. The age of the young stellar population of SN Ic-BL host environments also seems to be lower than for SN Ib and Ic, but our age sample is small. A synthesis of SN Ibc host environment spectroscopy to date does not reveal a significant difference in SN Ib and Ic metallicities, but reinforces the significance of the lower metallicities for SN Ic-BL. This combined sample demonstrates that galaxy-targeted SN searches introduce a significant bias for studies seeking to infer the metallicity distribution of SN progenitors, and we identify and discuss other systematic effects that play smaller roles. We present broad-band observations of the afterglow and environment of the short GRB 111020A. An extensive X-ray light curve from Swift/XRT, XMM-Newton and Chandra, spanning ~100 seconds to 10 days after the burst, reveals a significant break at t~2 days with pre- and post-break decline rates of alphaX,1 ~ -0.78 and alphaX,2<-1.7, respectively. Interpreted as a jet break, we infer a collimated outflow with an opening angle of ~3-8 degrees. The resulting beaming-corrected gamma-ray (10-1000 keV band) and blastwave kinetic energies are (2-3)e48 erg and (0.3-2)e49 erg, respectively, with the range depending on the unknown redshift of the burst. We report a radio afterglow limit of <39 microJy (3-sigma) from EVLA observations which, along with our finding that vc24.4 mag at 18 hours after the burst, and reveal a potential host galaxy with i~24.3 mag. The sub-arcsecond localization from Chandra provides a precise offset of 0.80"+/-0.11" (1-sigma) from this galaxy corresponding to an offset of 5-7 kpc for z=0.5-1.5. We find a high excess neutral Hydrogen column density of (7.5+/-2.0)e21 cm^(-2) (z=0). Our observations demonstrate that a growing fraction of short GRBs are collimated which may lead to a true event rate of >100-1000 Gpc^(-3) yr^(-1), in good agreement with the NS-NS merger rate of ~200-3000 Gpc^(-3) yr^(-1). The final inspiral of double neutron star and neutron star-black hole binaries are likely to be detected by advanced networks of ground-based gravitational wave (GW) interferometers. Maximizing the science returns from such a discovery will require the identification and localization of an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. Here we critically evaluate and compare several possible counterparts, including short-duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), "orphan" optical and radio afterglows, and ~day-long optical transients powered by the radioactive decay of heavy nuclei synthesized in the merger ejecta ("kilonovae"). We assess the promise of each counterpart in terms of four "Cardinal Virtues": detectability, high fraction, identifiability, and positional accuracy. Taking into account the search strategy for typical error regions of ~10s degs sq., we conclude that SGRBs are the most useful to confirm the cosmic origin of a few GW events, and to test the association with NS mergers. However, for the more ambitious goal of localizing and obtaining redshifts for a large sample of GW events, kilonovae are instead preferred. Off-axis optical afterglows will be detectable for at most ~10% of all events, while radio afterglows are promising only for the unique combination of energetic relativistic ejecta in a high density medium, and even then will require hundreds of hours of EVLA time per event. Our main recommendations are:(i) an all-sky gamma-ray satellite is essential for temporal coincidence detections, and for GW searches of gamma-ray triggered events; (ii) LSST should adopt a 1-day cadence follow-up strategy, ideally with ~0.5 hr per pointing to cover GW error regions (the standard 4-day cadence and depth will severely limit the probability of a unique identification); and (iii) radio searches should only focus on the relativistic case, which requires observations for a few months., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, submitted to ApJ
