Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex psychiatric disorder that affects the lives of hundreds of millions of individuals around the globe. Even today, researchers debate if morphological alterations in the brain are linked to MDD, likely due to the heterogeneity of this disorder. The application of deep learning tools to neuroimaging data, capable of capturing complex non-linear patterns, has the potential to provide diagnostic and predictive biomarkers for MDD. However, previous attempts to demarcate MDD patients and healthy controls (HC) based on segmented cortical features via linear machine learning approaches have reported low accuracies. In this study, we used globally representative data from the ENIGMA-MDD working group containing an extensive sample of people with MDD (N=2,772) and HC (N=4,240), which allows a comprehensive analysis with generalizable results. Based on the hypothesis that integration of vertex-wise cortical features can improve classification performance, we evaluated the classification of a DenseNet and a Support Vector Machine (SVM), with the expectation that the former would outperform the latter. As we analyzed a multi-site sample, we additionally applied the ComBat harmonization tool to remove potential nuisance effects of site. We found that both classifiers exhibited close to chance performance (balanced accuracy DenseNet: 51%; SVM: 53%), when estimated on unseen sites. Slightly higher classification performance (balanced accuracy DenseNet: 58%; SVM: 55%) was found when the cross-validation folds contained subjects from all sites, indicating site effect. In conclusion, the integration of vertex-wise morphometric features and the use of the non-linear classifier did not lead to the differentiability between MDD and HC. Our results support the notion that MDD classification on this combination of features and classifiers is unfeasible.

Plasma based acceleration is considered a promising concept for the next generation of linear electron-positron colliders. Despite the great progress achieved over last twenty years in laser technology, laser and beam driven particle acceleration, and special target availability, positron acceleration remains significantly underdeveloped if compared to electron acceleration. This is due to both the specifics of the plasma-based acceleration, and the lack of adequate positron sources tailored for the subsequent plasma based acceleration. Here a positron source based on the collision of a high energy electron beam with a high intensity laser pulse is proposed. The source relies on the subsequent multi-photon Compton and Breit-Wheeleer processes to generate an electron-positron pair out of a high energy photon emitted by an electron. Due to the strong dependence of the Breit-Wheeler process rate on photon energy and field strength, positrons are created with low divergence in a small volume around the peak of the laser pulse. The resulting low emittance in the submicron range potentially makes such positron source interesting for collider applications., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Preserving the quality of positron beams in plasma-based accelerators, where wakefields are generated in electron filaments, is challenging. These wakefields are characterized by transversely non-linear focusing fields and non-uniform accelerating fields. However, a nonzero plasma temperature linearizes the transverse wakefield within the central region of the electron filament. In this study, we employ 3D particle-in-cell simulations with mesh refinement to demonstrate that beams with emittances on the order of tens of nanometers are contained within the linearized region of the transverse wakefield. This enables emittance preservation to one percent, while positron beams with the same charge and micrometer emittances, which sample the non-linear part of the transverse wakefield, experience a relative emittance growth of ten percent. Additionally, we observe a significant reduction in the growth rate of the slice energy spread for the tens of nanometers emittance beams in comparison to the micrometer emittance beams. The utilization of warm plasmas in conjunction with low-emittance beams opens up new avenues for enhancing the beam quality across various plasma-based positron acceleration approaches., Comment: To be submitted as a proceedings for the 6th European Advanced Accelerator Concepts workshop

In this paper we consider classical and quantum versions of the critical long-range $O(N)$ model, for which we study finite-size and finite-temperature effects, respectively, at large $N$. First, we consider the classical (isotropic) model, which is conformally invariant at criticality, and we introduce one compact spatial direction. We show that the finite size dynamically induces an effective mass and we compute the one-point functions for bilinear primary operators with arbitrary spin and twist. Second, we study the quantum model, mapped to a Euclidean anisotropic field theory, local in Euclidean time and long-range in space, which we dub \emph{fractional Lifshitz field theory}. We show that this model admits a fixed point at zero temperature, where it displays anisotropic Lifshitz scaling, and show that at finite temperature a thermal mass is induced. We then compute the one-point functions for an infinite family of bilinear scaling operators. In both the classical and quantum model, we find that, as previously noted for the short-range $O(N)$ model in [arXiv:1802.10266], the large-$N$ two-point function contains information about the one-point functions, not only of the bilinear operators, but also of operators that appear in the operator product expansion of two fundamental fields only at subleading order in $1/N$, namely powers of the Hubbard-Stratonovich intermediate field., Comment: 37 pages, 4 figures, minor improvements and additional references

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
The Centaur (60558) Echeclus was discovered on March 03, 2000, orbiting between the orbits of Jupiter and Uranus. After exhibiting frequent outbursts, it also received a comet designation, 174P. If the ejected material can be a source of debris to form additional structures, studying the surroundings of an active body like Echeclus can provide clues about the formation scenarios of rings, jets, or dusty shells around small bodies. Stellar occultation is a handy technique for this kind of investigation, as it can, from Earth-based observations, detect small structures with low opacity around these objects. Stellar occultation by Echeclus was predicted and observed in 2019, 2020, and 2021. We obtain upper detection limits of rings with widths larger than 0.5 km and optical depth of $\tau$ = 0.02. These values are smaller than those of Chariklo's main ring; in other words, a Chariklo-like ring would have been detected. The occultation observed in 2020 provided two positive chords used to derive the triaxial dimensions of Echeclus based on a 3D model and pole orientation available in the literature. We obtained $a = 37.0\pm0.6$ km, $b = 28.4 \pm 0.5$ km, and $c= 24.9 \pm 0.4$ km, resulting in an area-equivalent radius of $30.0 \pm 0.5$ km. Using the projected limb at the occultation epoch and the available absolute magnitude ($\rm{H}_{\rm{v}} = 9.971 \pm 0.031$), we calculate an albedo of $p_{\rm{v}} = 0.050 \pm 0.003$. Constraints on the object's density and internal friction are also proposed., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

We report the results of the stellar occultation by (UII) Umbriel on September 21st, 2020. The shadow crossed the USA and Canada, and 19 positive chords were obtained. A limb parameter accounted for putative topographic features in the limb fittings. Ellipse fittings were not robust - only upper limits were derived for the true size/shape of a putative Umbriel ellipsoid. The adopted spherical solution gives radius = 582.4 +/- 0.8 km, smaller/close to 584.7 +/- 2.8 km from Voyager II. The apparent ellipse fit results in a true semi-major axis of 584.9 +/- 3.8 km, semi-minor axes of 582.3 +/- 0.6 km and true oblateness of 0.004 +/- 0.008 for a putative ellipsoid. The geometric albedo was pV = 0.26 +/- 0.01. The density was rho = 1.54 +/- 0.04 g cm-3. The surface gravity was 0.251 +/- 0.006 m s-2 and the escape velocity 0.541 +/- 0.006 km s-1 . Upper limits of 13 and 72 nbar (at 1 sigma and 3 sigma levels, respectively) were obtained for the surface pressure of a putative isothermal CO2 atmosphere at T = 70 K. A milliarcsecond precision position was derived: RA = 02h 30m 28.84556s +/- 0.1 mas, DE = 14o 19' 36.5836" +/- 0.2 mas. A large limb parameter of 4.2 km was obtained, in striking agreement with opposite southern hemisphere measurements by Voyager II in 1986. Occultation and Voyager results indicate that the same strong topography variation in the surface of Umbriel is present on both hemispheres.

Given a smooth genus two curve $C$, the moduli space SU$_C(3)$ of rank three semi-stable vector bundles on $C$ with trivial determinant is a double cover in $\mathbb{P}^8$ branched over a sextic hypersurface, whose projective dual is the famous Coble cubic, the unique cubic hypersurface that is singular along the Jacobian of $C$. In this paper we continue our exploration of the connections of such moduli spaces with the representation theory of $GL_9$, initiated in \cite{GSW} and pursued in \cite{GS, sam-rains1, sam-rains2, bmt}. Starting from a general trivector $v$ in $\wedge^3\mathbb{C}^9$, we construct a Fano manifold $D_{Z_{10}}(v)$ in $G(3,9)$ as a so-called orbital degeneracy locus, and we prove that it defines a family of Hecke lines in SU$_C(3)$. We deduce that $D_{Z_{10}}(v)$ is isomorphic to the odd moduli space SU$_C(3, \mathcal{O}_C(c))$ of rank three stable vector bundles on $C$ with fixed effective determinant of degree one. We deduce that the intersection of $D_{Z_{10}}(v)$ with a general translate of $G(3,7)$ in $G(3,9)$ is a K3 surface of genus $19$.

We construct a full exceptional Lefschetz collection on the spinor 15-fold consisting of a connected component of the space of orthogonal 6-dimensional subspaces of a 12-dimensional complex vector space, isotropic with respect of a fixed non-degenerate quadratic form. The collection is made of 2 twists of a 4-item block and 8 twists of a 3-item block, confirming a conjecture of Kuznetsov and Smirnov. We speculate that a similar collection might work for the Freudenthal E7-variety.

A major endeavor of this decade is the direct characterization of young giant exoplanets at high spectral resolution to determine the composition of their atmosphere and infer their formation processes and evolution. Such a goal represents a major challenge owing to their small angular separation and luminosity contrast with respect to their parent stars. Instead of designing and implementing completely new facilities, it has been proposed to leverage the capabilities of existing instruments that offer either high contrast imaging or high dispersion spectroscopy, by coupling them using optical fibers. In this work we present the implementation and first on-sky results of the HiRISE instrument at the very large telescope (VLT), which combines the exoplanet imager SPHERE with the recently upgraded high resolution spectrograph CRIRES using single-mode fibers. The goal of HiRISE is to enable the characterization of known companions in the $H$ band, at a spectral resolution of the order of $R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda = 100\,000$, in a few hours of observing time. We present the main design choices and the technical implementation of the system, which is constituted of three major parts: the fiber injection module inside of SPHERE, the fiber bundle around the telescope, and the fiber extraction module at the entrance of CRIRES. We also detail the specific calibrations required for HiRISE and the operations of the instrument for science observations. Finally, we detail the performance of the system in terms of astrometry, temporal stability, optical aberrations, and transmission, for which we report a peak value of $\sim$3.9% based on sky measurements in median observing conditions. Finally, we report on the first astrophysical detection of HiRISE to illustrate its potential., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables. Accepted in A&A on 24 October 2023

The Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly determines the violation of chiral symmetry when massless fermions are coupled to an abelian gauge field. In its seminal paper, Adler noticed that a modified chiral U(1) symmetry could still be defined, at the expense of being generated by a non-gauge-invariant conserved current. We show this internal U(1) symmetry has the special feature that it transforms the Haag duality violating sectors (or non local operator classes). This provides a simple unifying perspective on the origin of anomaly quantization, anomaly matching, applicability of Goldstone theorem, and the absence of a Noether current. We comment on recent literature where this symmetry is considered to be either absent or non-invertible. We end by recalling the DHR reconstruction theorem, which states 0-form symmetries cannot be non-invertible for d>2, and argue for a higher form-symmetry reconstruction theorem., Comment: 37 pages

In this paper we discuss a compact, laser-plasma-based scheme for the generation of positron beams suitable to be implemented in an all-optical setup. A laser-plasma-accelerated electron beam hits a solid target producing electron-positron pairs via bremsstrahlung. The back of the target serves as a plasma mirror to in-couple a laser pulse into a plasma stage located right after the mirror where the laser drives a plasma wave (or wakefield). By properly choosing the delay between the laser and the electron beam the positrons produced in the target can be trapped in the wakefield, where they are focused and accelerated during the transport, resulting in a collimated beam. This approach minimizes the ballistic propagation time and enhances the trapping efficiency. The system can be used as an injector of positron beams and has potential applications in the development of a future, compact, plasma-based electron-positron linear collider.

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. BACKGROUND: Carriers of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants exhibit regional and global brain differences compared with noncarriers. However, interpreting regional differences is challenging if a global difference drives the regional brain differences. Intraindividual variability measures can be used to test for regional differences beyond global differences in brain structure. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging data were used to obtain regional brain values for 1q21.1 distal deletion (n = 30) and duplication (n = 27) and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion (n = 170) and duplication (n = 243) carriers and matched noncarriers (n = 2350). Regional intra-deviation scores, i.e., the standardized difference between an individuals regional difference and global difference, were used to test for regional differences that diverge from the global difference. RESULTS: For the 1q21.1 distal deletion carriers, cortical surface area for regions in the medial visual cortex, posterior cingulate, and temporal pole differed less and regions in the prefrontal and superior temporal cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical surface area. For the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion carriers, cortical thickness in regions in the medial visual cortex, auditory cortex, and temporal pole differed less and the prefrontal and somatosensory cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical thickness. CONCLUSIONS: We find evidence for regional effects beyond differences in global brain measures in 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants. The results provide new insight into brain profiling of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants, with the potential to increase understanding of the mechanisms involved in altered neurodevelopment.

It is widely accepted that the next lepton collider beyond a Higgs factory would require center-of-mass energy of the order of up to 15 TeV. Since, given reasonable space and cost restrictions, conventional accelerator technology reaches its limits near this energy, high-gradient advanced acceleration concepts are attractive. Advanced and novel accelerators (ANAs) are leading candidates due to their ability to produce acceleration gradients on the order of 1-100 GV/m, leading to compact acceleration facilities. However, intermediate energy facilities (IEF) are required to test the critical technology elements on the way towards multi-TeV-class collliders. Here a science case for a 20-100 GeV center-of-mass energy ANA-based lepton collider that can be a candidate for an intermediate energy facility is presented. The IEF can provide numerous opportunities for high energy physics studies including precision Quantum Chromodynamics and Beyond the Standard Model physics measurements, investigation of charged particle interactions with extreme electromagnetic fields, and exploring muon and proton beam acceleration. Possible applications of this collider include the studies of γγ and electron beam-fixed target/beamdump collider designs. Thus, the goal of the proposed IEF is to both carry out particle physics measurements in the 20-100 GeV ranges as well as to serve as an ANA demonstrator facility.

Abstract The decays of the χb1(1P), χb2(1P), χb1(2P) and χb2(2P) mesons into the Υ(1S)μ+μ − final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. The newly observed decays together with the Υ(2S) → Υ(1S)π+π − and Υ(3S) → Υ(2S)π+π − decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states.

Abstract Background Perioperative adrenergic vasopressors in kidney transplantation have been linked to negative outcomes and arrhythmias. Synthetic angiotensin II (AT2S) could improve renal hemodynamics, preserve allograft function, and reduce arrhythmias. Objective We aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of AT2S to adrenergic vasopressors when used for perioperative hypotension in kidney transplant. Methods This single-center, retrospective cohort study included adults with perioperative shock requiring AT2S or adrenergic agents as first-line vasopressors during kidney transplant. The primary outcome was the need for a second continuous infusion vasopressor agents beyond the first-line agent. Secondary outcomes assessed adverse events and early allograft outcomes. Results Twenty patients receiving AT2S and 60 patients receiving adrenergic vasopressor agents were included. Intraoperatively, 1 of 20 patients (5%) in the AT2S group needed a second continuous vasopressor compared to 7 of 60 patients (11.7%) who needed a second continuous vasopressor in the adrenergic vasopressor group (P = 0.672). Postoperatively, 1 of 20 patients (5%) in the AT2S group compared to 12 of 60 patients (20%) in the adrenergic vasopressor group required a second vasopressor (P = 0.168). There were significantly fewer arrhythmias (1/20 [5%] vs. 17/60 [28.3%]), P = 0.03) and ischemic complications (0/20 [0%] vs. 11/20 [18.3%], P = 0.031) in patients who received AT2S. There were no differences in immediate, slow, or delayed graft function or in discharge, 1-month, and 3-month glomerular filtration rates (p > 0.05). Conclusion and Relevance Both AT2S and adrenergic vasopressors are effective for perioperative hypotension in kidney transplant, with AT2S showing a lower incidence of arrhythmias and ischemic complications.

Abstract A measurement of the transverse polarization of the Λ and Λ ¯ $$ \overline{\varLambda} $$ hyperons in pNe fixed-target collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 68.4 GeV is presented using data collected by the LHCb detector. The polarization is studied using the decay Λ → pπ − together with its charge conjugated process, the integrated values measured are P Λ = 0.029 ± 0.019 stat ± 0.012 syst , P Λ ¯ = 0.003 ± 0.023 stat ± 0.014 syst . $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{P}_{\varLambda }=0.029\pm 0.019\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.012\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}{P}_{\overline{\varLambda}}=0.003\pm 0.023\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.014\left(\textrm{syst}\right).\end{array}} $$ Furthermore, the results are shown as a function of the Feynman x variable, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity of the hyperons, and are compared with previous measurements.

Abstract A comprehensive study of the local and nonlocal amplitudes contributing to the decay B 0 → K *0(→ K + π − )μ + μ − is performed by analysing the phase-space distribution of the decay products. The analysis is based on pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb −1 collected by the LHCb experiment. This measurement employs for the first time a model of both one-particle and two-particle nonlocal amplitudes, and utilises the complete dimuon mass spectrum without any veto regions around the narrow charmonium resonances. In this way it is possible to explicitly isolate the local and nonlocal contributions and capture the interference between them. The results show that interference with nonlocal contributions, although larger than predicted, only has a minor impact on the Wilson Coefficients determined from the fit to the data. For the local contributions, the Wilson Coefficient C 9 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$ , responsible for vector dimuon currents, exhibits a 2.1σ deviation from the Standard Model expectation. The Wilson Coefficients C 10 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10} $$ , C 9 ′ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9^{\prime } $$ and C 10 ′ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10}^{\prime } $$ are all in better agreement than C 9 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$ with the Standard Model and the global significance is at the level of 1.5σ. The model used also accounts for nonlocal contributions from B 0 → K *0[τ + τ − → μ + μ − ] rescattering, resulting in the first direct measurement of the bsττ vector effective-coupling C 9 τ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{9\tau } $$ .

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

Among the performance-enhancing procedures for Hopfield-type networks that implement associative memory, Hebbian Unlearning (or dreaming) strikes for its simplicity and its clear biological interpretation. Yet, it does not easily lend itself to a clear analytical understanding. Here we show how Hebbian Unlearning can be effectively described in terms of a simple evolution of the spectrum and the eigenvectors of the coupling matrix. We use these ideas to design new dreaming algorithms that are effective from a computational point of view, and are analytically far more transparent than the original scheme.

Given a smooth genus three curve $C$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant embeds in $\mathbb{P}^8$ as a hypersurface whose singular locus is the Kummer threefold of $C$; this hypersurface is the Coble quartic. Gruson, Sam and Weyman realized that this quartic could be constructed from a general skew-symmetric fourform in eight variables. Using the lines contained in the quartic, we prove that a similar construction allows to recover SU$_C(2, L)$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with fixed determinant of odd degree L, as a subvariety of $G(2, 8)$. In fact, each point $p \in C$ defines a natural embedding of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$ in $G(2, 8)$. We show that, for the generic such embedding, there exists a unique quadratic section of the Grassmannian which is singular exactly along the image of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$, and thus deserves to be coined the Coble quadric of the pointed curve $(C, p)$.

We study the universal logarithmic coefficient of the entanglement entropy (EE) in a sphere for free fermionic field theories in a $d=4$ Minkowski spacetime. As a warm-up, we revisit the free massless spin-$1/2$ field case by employing a dimensional reduction to the $d=2$ half-line and a subsequent numerical real-time computation on a lattice. Surprisingly, the area coefficient diverges for a radial discretization but is finite for a geometric regularization induced by the mutual information. The resultant universal logarithmic coefficient $-11/90$ is consistent with the literature. For the free massless spin-$3/2$ field, the Rarita-Schwinger field, we also perform a dimensional reduction to the half-line. The reduced Hamiltonian coincides with the spin-$1/2$ one, except for the omission of the lowest total angular momentum modes. This gives a universal logarithmic coefficient of $-71/90$. We discuss the physical interpretation of the universal logarithmic coefficient for free higher spin field theories without a stress-energy tensor., Comment: 19 pages + Appendices, 4 figures

We present a description of the design process, prototyping and production of the hybrid circuits for the front-end electronics of the Upstream Tracker at LHCb. The multilayer polyamide-based printed circuit boards, or hybrids, are designed to host the front-end ASICs. The ASICs require an optimized power delivery network from 0 to 120MHz, with a maximum of 10^-2 Ohms round-trip resistance, and 100 Ohms differential traces. Hybrids are required to have minimal radiation length, and to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of the data taking through intrinsic radiation hardness characteristics.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Quantum Boltzmann machines (QBMs) are machine-learning models for both classical and quantum data. We give an operational definition of QBM learning in terms of the difference in expectation values between the model and target, taking into account the polynomial size of the data set. By using the relative entropy as a loss function this problem can be solved without encountering barren plateaus. We prove that a solution can be obtained with stochastic gradient descent using at most a polynomial number of Gibbs states. We also prove that pre-training on a subset of the QBM parameters can only lower the sample complexity bounds. In particular, we give pre-training strategies based on mean-field, Gaussian Fermionic, and geometrically local Hamiltonians. We verify these models and our theoretical findings numerically on a quantum and a classical data set. Our results establish that QBMs are promising machine learning models., Comment: Main text: 11 pages, 3 figures. Supplementary information: 16 pages, 2 figures. Published version

Current knowledge about functional connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is based on small-scale studies, limiting the generalizability of results. Moreover, the majority of studies have focused only on predefined regions or functional networks rather than connectivity throughout the entire brain. Here, we investigated differences in resting-state functional connectivity between OCD patients and healthy controls (HC) using mega-analysis of data from 1024 OCD patients and 1028 HC from 28 independent samples of the ENIGMA-OCD consortium. We assessed group differences in whole-brain functional connectivity at both the regional and network level, and investigated whether functional connectivity could serve as biomarker to identify patient status at the individual level using machine learning analysis. The mega-analyses revealed widespread abnormalities in functional connectivity in OCD, with global hypo-connectivity (Cohens d: -0.27 to -0.13) and few hyper-connections, mainly with the thalamus (Cohens d: 0.19 to 0.22). Most hypo-connections were located within the sensorimotor network and no fronto-striatal abnormalities were found. Overall, classification performances were poor, with area-under-the-receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC) scores ranging between 0.567 and 0.673, with better classification for medicated (AUC = 0.702) than unmedicated (AUC = 0.608) patients versus healthy controls. These findings provide partial support for existing pathophysiological models of OCD and highlight the important role of the sensorimotor network in OCD. However, resting-state connectivity does not so far provide an accurate biomarker for identifying patients at the individual level.

BACKGROUND: 3 months of weekly rifapentine plus isoniazid (3HP) and 4 months of daily rifampicin (4R) are recommended for tuberculosis preventive treatment. As these regimens have not been compared directly, we used individual patient data and network meta-analysis methods to compare completion, safety, and efficacy between 3HP and 4R. METHODS: We conducted a network meta-analysis of individual patient data by searching PubMed for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published between Jan 1, 2000, and Mar 1, 2019. Eligible studies compared 3HP or 4R to 6 months or 9 months of isoniazid and reported treatment completion, adverse events, or incidence of tuberculosis disease. Deidentified individual patient data from eligible studies were provided by study investigators and outcomes were harmonised. Methods for network meta-analysis were used to generate indirect adjusted risk ratios (aRRs) and risk differences (aRDs) with their 95% CIs. FINDINGS: We included 17 572 participants from 14 countries in six trials. In the network meta-analysis, treatment completion was higher for people on 3HP than for those on 4R (aRR 1·06 [95% CI 1·02-1·10]; aRD 0·05 [95% CI 0·02-0·07]). For treatment-related adverse events leading to drug discontinuation, risks were higher for 3HP than for 4R for adverse events of any severity (aRR 2·86 [2·12-4·21]; aRD 0·03 [0·02-0·05]) and for grade 3-4 adverse events (aRR 3·46 [2·09-6·17]; aRD 0·02 [0·01-0·03]). Similar increased risks with 3HP were observed with other definitions of adverse events and were consistent across age groups. No difference in the incidence of tuberculosis disease between 3HP and 4R was found. INTERPRETATION: In the absence of RCTs, our individual patient data network meta-analysis indicates that 3HP provided an increase in treatment completion over 4R, but was associated with a higher risk of adverse events. Although findings should be confirmed, the trade-off between completion and safety must be considered when selecting a regimen for tuberculosis preventive treatment. FUNDING: None. There are few studies focused on spore and pollen clumps in paleopalynological samples, and these are only reports from the Northern Hemisphere. These aggregates may be of animal or floral origin. The goal of this contribution is to provide the first detailed study of spore and pollen clumps from the Southern Hemisphere, and to discuss their possible origin, botanical affinities, and pollination modes, based on their morphological characteristics, preservation and comparison with putative living representatives. Three fern spore clumps and 18 angiosperm pollen clumps were recognized in Maastrichtian-Danian La Colonia Formation sediments that outcrop at Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina. Most clumps are monospecific and composed of undamaged elements but some of them have two types of spore/pollen with corroded and/or fragmented exines. These findings represent the most diverse and abundant record of fern and angiosperm clumps from the Late Cretaceous and early Paleocene so far known from South America and the Southern Hemisphere. These results are indicative of the need for comprehensive large-scale studies on pollination of modern taxa and careful processing of palynological samples to lessen the already large bias in paleopalynological interpretations. The paucity of information on clumps in the fossil record has impaired our comprehension of dispersion/pollination in deep time.
