Monitoring and structural health assessment are the primary requirements for performance evaluation of damaged bridges. This paper highlights the case-study of a damaged Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridge structure by considering the outcomes of destructive testing, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) evaluations, static and 3D non-linear analysis methods. Finite element (FE) modelling of this structure is being done using the material properties extracted by the in-situ testing. Analysis is carried out to evaluate the bridge damage based on the data recorded after the static linear (AXIS VM software) and 3D non-linear analysis (ATENA 3D software). Extensive concrete cracking and high value of crack width are found to be the major problems, leading to lowering the performance of the bridge. As a solution, this paper proposes a proper Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system, that will extend the life cycle of the bridge with minimal repair costs and reduced risk of failure. This system is based on the installation of three different types of sensors: Liquid Levelling sensors (LLS) for measurement of vertical displacement, Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors (DFOS) for crack monitoring, and Weigh in Motion (WIM) devices for monitoring of moving loads on bridge.

Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with increased mortality and reduced health-related quality of life. Anemia is characterized by a decrease in hemoglobin, the iron-rich protein that the body uses for oxygen transport. Iron is required to produce hemoglobin, and disruptions in the iron homeostasis can lead to iron-deficiency anemia. Management of anemia in individuals with CKD is typically performed by a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or registered nurses. Throughout the care continuum, the management can be enhanced by multidisciplinary care, and individuals with CKD can benefit from the involvement of other specialties, with dietitians/nutritionists playing an important role. However, a key area of unmet clinical need is how to assess and address iron-deficiency anemia. This review aims to provide an overview of iron-deficiency anemia in CKD and how this may be diagnosed and managed by the entire kidney care team, such as describing the mechanisms underlying iron homeostasis, the complications of iron-deficiency anemia, and the current challenges associated with its diagnosis and treatment in CKD. Opportunities for each multidisciplinary team member to add value to the care of individuals with CKD and iron-deficiency anemia are also described.

Turmeric, known for its curcuminoid-rich rhizome, particularly curcumin, exhibits notable antioxidant and antiviral properties. The likelihood of microbial contamination necessitates finding reliable techniques for subjecting the sample to radiation from this plant-based raw material. One alternative is to expose curcumin to radiation (e-beam), which was carried out as part of this research. Confirmation of the lack of curcumin decomposition was carried out using HPLC-DAD/MS techniques. Additionally, using the EPR technique, the generated free radicals were defined as radiation effects. Using a number of methods to assess the ability to scavenge free radicals (DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP), a slight decrease in the activity of curcumin raw material was determined. The analysis of the characteristic bands in the FT-IR spectra allowed us to indicate changes in the phenolic OH groups as an effect of the presence of radicals formed.

Four copper(II) complexes, C1–4, derived from 1-(isoquinolin-3-yl)heteroalkyl-2-one ligands L1–4 were synthesized and characterized using an elemental analysis, IR spectroscopic data as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction data for complex C1. The stability of complexes C1–4 under conditions mimicking the physiological environment was estimated using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The antiproliferative activity of both ligands L1–4 and copper(II) compounds C1–4 were evaluated using an MTT assay on four human cancer cell lines, A375 (melanoma), HepG2 (hepatoma), LS-180 (colon cancer) and T98G (glioblastoma), and a non-cancerous cell line, CCD-1059Sk (human normal skin fibroblasts). Complexes C1–4 showed greater potency against HepG2, LS180 and T98G cancer cell lines than etoposide (IC50 = 5.04–14.89 μg/mL vs. IC50 = 43.21–>100 μg/mL), while free ligands L1–4 remained inactive in all cell lines. The prominent copper(II) compound C2 appeared to be more selective towards cancer cells compared with normal cells than compounds C1, C3 and C4. The treatment of HepG2 and T98G cells with complex C2 resulted in sub-G1 and G2/M cell cycle arrest, respectively, which was accompanied by DNA degradation. Moreover, the non-cytotoxic doses of C2 synergistically enhanced the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic drugs, including etoposide, 5-fluorouracil and temozolomide, in HepG2 and T98G cells. The antimicrobial activities of ligands L2–4 and their copper(II) complexes C2–4 were evaluated using different types of Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and yeast species. No correlation was found between the results of the antiproliferative and antimicrobial experiments. The antioxidant activities of all compounds were determined using the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging methods. Antiradical tests revealed that among the investigated compounds, copper(II) complex C4 possessed the strongest antioxidant properties. Finally, the ADME technique was used to determine the physicochemical and drug-likeness properties of the obtained complexes.

Caramel, defined as a coloring agent and as an antioxidant, is used in several kinds of food products and is consumed by many people in different amounts. In our research we showed that the caramelization of sucrose under special conditions leads to the formation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). So, it makes sense that humans also consume this type of CQDs, and it is theoretically possible for these particles to affect the body. Despite an increasing number of studies describing different types of CQDs, their biosafety is still not clearly understood. In our in vitro research, we examined the effects on platelet aggregation, protein glycation and lipid peroxidation of CQDs and caramel formed from a 20% sucrose solution. In vitro aggregation tests were conducted using freshly collected whole rat blood in a multiplate platelet function analyzer and measurer of electric impedance. The cytotoxic effect of the tested solutions on blood platelets was evaluated based on the release of lactate dehydrogenase. The formation of glycated bovine serum albumin was measured as fluorescence intensity and fructosamine level. The reducing power of the solutions was determined in adipose tissue, and their effect on lipid peroxidation in adipose tissue in vitro was also assessed. By measuring the intensity of hemolysis after incubation in solutions with red blood cell, we assessed their influence on the integration of the red blood cell membrane. All tests were performed in comparison with glucose and fructose and other frequently used sweeteners, such as erythritol and xylitol. Our study showed that caramel and CQDs formed from caramel may influence the glycation process and integrity of the red blood cell membrane, but unlike glucose and fructose, they decrease lipid peroxidation and may reduce Fe (III). Additionally, it is unlikely that they affect platelet aggregation. Compared to glucose and fructose, they may be safer for patients with metabolic disorders; however, further research is needed on the safety and biological activity of caramel and CQD.

Background: We designed a prospective feasibility study to assess the 5x-multiplier (5x) calculation (eg, 3 pills in last 24 hours × 5 = 15) to standardize discharge opioid prescriptions compared to usual care. Methods: Faculty-based surgical teams volunteered for either 5x or usual care arms. Patients undergoing inpatient (≥48 hours) surgery and discharged by surgical teams were included. The primary end point was discharge oral morphine equivalents. Secondary end points were opioid-free discharges and 30-day refill rates. Results: Median last 24-hour oral morphine equivalents was similar between arms (7.5 mg 5x vs 10 mg usual care, P = .830). This paper is written by a group of Ph.D. students pursuing their work in different areas of ICT, outside the direct area of Information Quantum Technologies IQT. An ambitious task was undertaken to research, by each co-author, a potential practical influence of the current IQT development on their current work. The research of co-authors span the following areas of ICT: CMOS for IQT, QEC, quantum time series forecasting, IQT in biomedicine. The intention of the authors is to show how quickly the quantum techniques can penetrate in the nearest future other, i.e. their own, areas of ICT.

The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of lead (Pb) at various concentrations, as an abiotic factor, and the cross-talk between Pb and pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris)) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), as a biotic factor, on the defence responses of pea seedlings (Pisum sativum L. cv. Cysterski). The analysis of growth parameters for pea seedlings demonstrated that Pb at a low concentration, i.e., 0.025–0.0625 mM Pb(NO3)2, caused a hormesis effect, i.e., stimulation of seedling growth, whereas Pb at higher concentrations, i.e., 0.01–0.325 mM Pb(NO3)2, inhibited growth, which manifested as the inhibition of length and fresh biomass. The differences in the level of the main defence-related phytohormones, such as abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)—an auxin stimulating plant cell growth—depended on the dose of Pb, aphid infestation and direct contact of the stress factor with the organ. A high accumulation of soluble sugars in the organs of pea seedlings both at sublethal doses and hormetic doses at early experimental time points was observed. At 0 h and 24 h of the experiment, the hormetic doses of Pb significantly stimulated invertase activities, especially in the roots. Moreover, an increase was observed in the pisatin concentration in pea seedlings growing in the presence of different concentrations of Pb and in the case of cross-talk between Pb and A. pisum in relation to the control. Additionally, a significant induction of the expressions of isoflavone synthase (IFS) and 6α-hydroxymaackiain 3-O-methyltransferase (HMM) genes, which participate in the regulation of the pisatin biosynthesis pathway, in pea seedlings growing under the influence of sublethal 0.5 mM Pb(NO3)2 and hormetic 0.075 mM Pb(NO3)2 doses of Pb was noted. The obtained results showed that the response of P. sativum seedlings depends on the Pb dose applied, direct contact of the stress factor with the organ and the duration of contact. Background and Objectives: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering disease affecting mainly elderly patients. Still, little is known about the pathogenesis of pruritus in BP or the factors that affect the clinical course of the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing the clinical course of BP among older patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of medical records of 55 patients with BP hospitalized in the dermatology department in 2015–2021 was conducted. The study focused on preliminary diagnosis, medical history, clinical examination (characteristics and location of cutaneous changes), laboratory investigation, and direct and indirect immunofluorescence. Results: Analysis of laboratory results in combination with the clinical course of BP showed that red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values were negatively associated with a risk of erosions and erythema, while MCHC values were positively correlated with a risk of associated pruritus. A correlation was found between neurological diseases and an increased risk of erosions. Conclusions: We have shown that age and neurological conditions, including stroke, affect the clinical course of BP. Further studies on a larger group of patients should be conducted to investigate the different factors affecting the clinical aspect of BP and to understand the relationship between them. Introduction and aim: Adenoma pleomorphum (multiform adenoma) is the most popular bening tumor, that originates from the salivary glands. Neoplasm develops mainly from large salivary glands and its occurrence in the nasal cavity is rare and falls mainly in the 3-6 decade of life. Only 1% of all pleomorphic adenomas develop in the nasal and sinus cavities. Despite being a benign tumor, malignant transformation can occur in 2-10% of cases. Description of the case: We report a case of a 21-year-old female ethnically Polish patient with nasal multiform adenoma with initial diagnosis, which indicated a polyp. The final diagnosis was based on the histopathological examination of the resected lesion. The tumor was removed by an endoscopic method with no tissue margins, which may increase the risk of recurrence. Conclusions: Our case demonstrates that despite pleomorphic adenomas typically occurs in the 3rd to 6th decade of life, clinical symptoms are nondistinctive with a polyp and nasal cavity is a very rare location there should be always be increased vigilance leading to choosing best diagnostic measures to form right diagnosis. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are promising materials already being used in bridge construction. Lightweight deck panels, mainly used in the rehabilitation or replacement of existing bridges, are the most commonly used FRP bridge components. However, FRP decks are prone to damage due to delamination, matrix cracking, interlaminar cracking, and debonding. In addition, due to their microstructure, FRP materials tend to deteriorate in ways that are not easily detected by visual inspection. Therefore, nondestructive methods should often complement visual inspections aimed at assessing the technical condition of the structure. New measurement techniques are constantly being researched and developed to assist in the evaluation of FRP structures. Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) has been chosen as the main measurement technique of the newly developed FRP bridge deck panel because this technique provides extended advantages compared to the conventional spot gauges. The concept of a component with an integrated DFOS-based system capable of structural control and detection of overloaded vehicles has been developed and verified both in laboratory conditions. The novelty of the presented approach is that sensors (strain-sensing fibers) are precisely embedded in FRP laminates for simultaneous internal strain and vertical displacement (shape change) measurements and delamination detection. The experimental verification of a full-scale deck under static and dynamic loading is described in the paper. The performance of the DFOS system was verified using reference techniques. More and more nursing homes are admitting residents receiving dialysis. In 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services released guidance addressing the qualifications of those caring for these residents and further clarified the survey process. The American Nephrology Nurses Association Board of Directors created the Home Dialysis for Nursing Home Residents Task Force to review the revised guidance, investigate strategies and opportunities for nephrology registered nurses in home dialysis therapy in this setting, and consider the potential implications related to alternative home dialysis settings. Endemic to only three known provinces in South Central Vietnam, Cuora picturata have faced extensive collection pressures for the food, medicinal, and pet trades. Further exacerbating their decline is the lack of protected areas where wild populations exist, with only one known population occurring within a protected area. With threats to wild populations persisting, the development of an assurance colony has been prioritized for C. picturata. The Asian Turtle Program of Indo‐Myanmar Conservation has been operating the Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park since 1998. From 2020 to 2022, 24 C. picturata were acquired by the TCC from the illegal trade. With no ideal repatriation plan, these animals provided an opportunity for developing a captive assurance colony at the TCC to safeguard the species from extinction. As semi‐aquatic species, box turtles in the genus Cuora are a unique group that shows variations in habitat use and behavior between species. Herein, we documented some specific courtship behaviors not yet described for C. picturata, providing insight into the unique reproductive behaviors of this species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is a major concern for cattle welfare globally, causing respiratory issues and significant economic losses. This study investigated the presence of antibodies against five BRD pathogens in calves from south-western Poland. Researchers tested serum samples from 4095 dairy calves, aged 7–12 months, that recently showed BRD symptoms and had never been vaccinated. They found that 47.08% of the herds had antibodies against at least one of the tested pathogens. The overall prevalence rates were as follows: BoAHV1 (21.54%), BVDV (32.0%), BRSV (34.15%), BPIV3 (34.31%), and M. bovis (31.38%). Notably, BRSV and BPIV3 antibodies often appeared together in serum samples. This study underscores the importance of preventive measures against these pathogens to protect cattle health and reduce economic losses in the region. Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) poses a significant threat to cattle welfare worldwide, affecting their respiratory system and causing substantial economic losses. BRD is multifactorial in nature. This research aimed to investigate the serological profile of calves for the five main bovine respiratory pathogens. Serum samples were collected from dairy calves aged 7–12 months that had never been vaccinated against tested pathogens and had recently shown signs of BRD. A total of 4095 calves from 650 dairy herds located in south-western Poland were examined. The Commercial Indirect Respiratory ELISA Kit Multiplexed—Double well—BIO K 284/5 (Bio-X Diagnostics, Rochefort, Belgium) was used to determine the presence of antibodies against BVDV, BoAHV1, BRSV, BPIV3, and M. bovis. The presence of antibodies against at least one of the tested pathogens was found in 306 (47.08%) herds. The overall prevalence of antibodies was as follows: BoAHV1 21.54%, BVDV 32.0%, BRSV 34.15%, BPIV3 34.31%, and M. bovis 31.38%. The strongest correlation was between BRSV antibodies positive sera and BPIV3 antibodies positive sera. Among the five pathogens tested, antibodies to BVDV, BRSV, BPIV3, and M. bovis were most commonly detected simultaneously. The present study explores the synthesis and bio-safety evaluation of gadolinium-doped carbon quantum dots (GCQDs) as a potential dual-contrast agent for diagnostic imaging. GCQDs exhibit both fluorescent and magnetic properties, making them suitable for UV–Vis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The synthesis of GCQDs was achieved via hydrothermal treatment, incorporating gadolinium into the carbon quantum dot matrix. The magnetic properties of GCQDs were analyzed, showing significantly enhanced values compared to gadobutrol, a common MRI contrast agent. However, synthesis constraints limit the gadolinium content achievable in nanodots. To assess the safety of GCQDs, their effects on the embryonic development of zebrafish (Danio rerio) were examined. Various concentrations of GCQDs were tested, observing mortality rates, hatchability, malformations, heartbeats, spontaneous movement, and GCQDs uptake. Dialysis studies indicated that gadolinium ions are incorporated into the internal structure of the carbon nanodots. Zebrafish toxicity tests revealed that while survival rates were comparable to control groups, hatchability decreased significantly with higher gadolinium concentrations in GCQDs. Fluorescence microscopy showed no statistical differences in the fluorescence intensity between groups. These findings suggest that GCQDs could serve as an effective dual-contrast agent, combining the optical imaging capabilities of CQDs with the enhanced MRI contrast provided by gadolinium. In order to find new hypotensive drugs possessing higher activity and better selectivity, a new series of fifteen 5,5-dimethylhydantoin derivatives (1–15) was designed. Three-step syntheses, consisting of N-alkylations using standard procedures as well as microwaves, were carried out. Crystal structures were determined for compounds 7–9. All of the synthesized 5,5-dimethylhydantoins were tested for their affinity to α1-adrenergic receptors (α1-AR) using both in vitro and in silico methods. Most of them displayed higher affinity (Ki < 127.9 nM) to α1-adrenoceptor than urapidil in radioligand binding assay. Docking to two subtypes of adrenergic receptors, α1A and α1B, was conducted. Selected compounds were tested for their activity towards two α1-AR subtypes. All of them showed intrinsic antagonistic activity. Moreover, for two compounds (1 and 5), which possess o-methoxyphenylpiperazine fragments, strong activity (IC50 < 100 nM) was observed. Some representatives (3 and 5), which contain alkyl linker, proved selectivity towards α1A-AR, while two compounds with 2-hydroxypropyl linker (11 and 13) to α1B-AR. Finally, hypotensive activity was examined in rats. The most active compound (5) proved not only a lower effective dose than urapidil but also a stronger effect than prazosin.

Excessive fructose consumption may lead to metabolic syndrome, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and hypertension. α1-adrenoceptors antagonists are antihypertensive agents that exert mild beneficial effects on the metabolic profile in hypertensive patients. However, they are no longer used as a first-line therapy for hypertension based on Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) outcomes. Later studies have shown that quinazoline-based α1-adrenolytics (prazosin, doxazosin) induce apoptosis; however, this effect was independent of α1-adrenoceptor blockade and was associated with the presence of quinazoline moiety. Recent studies showed that α1-adrenoceptors antagonists may reduce mortality in COVID-19 patients due to anti-inflammatory properties. MH-76 (1-[3-(2,6-dimethylphenoxy)propyl]-4-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine hydrochloride)) is a non-quinazoline α1-adrenoceptor antagonist which, in fructose-fed rats, exerted anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive properties and reduced insulin resistance and visceral adiposity. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of fructose consumption and treatment with α1-adrenoceptor antagonists of different classes (MH-76 and prazosin) on liver tissue of fructose-fed rats. Livers were collected from four groups (Control, Fructose, Fructose + MH-76 and Fructose + Prazosin) and subjected to biochemical and histopathological studies. Both α1-adrenolytics reduced macrovesicular steatosis and triglycerides content of liver tissue and improved its antioxidant capacity. Treatment with MH-76, contrary to prazosin, reduced leucocytes infiltration as well as decreased elevated IL-6 and leptin concentrations. Moreover, the MH-76 hepatotoxicity in hepatoma HepG2 cells was less than that of prazosin. The use of α1-adrenolytics with anti-inflammatory properties may be an interesting option for treatment of hypertension with metabolic complications.

The thermal properties and alignment of crystallinity of materials in thin films play crucial roles in the performance and reliability of various devices, especially in the fields of electronics, materials science, and engineering. The slight variations in the molecular packing of the active layer can make considerable differences in the optical and thermal properties. Herein, we aim to investigate the tuning of the physical properties of a blended thin film of n-type small organic molecules of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA-SMs) with the mixing of the p-type polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The resulting thin films exhibit an enhanced surface crystallinity compared to the pristine material, leading to the formation of long crystallites, and these crystallites are thermally stable in the solid state, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and thermal analysis using variable-temperature spectroscopic ellipsometry (VTSE) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We believe that the crystalline structure of the obtained P3HT/PTCA-SMs blends is a combination of edge-on and face-on orientations, which enable the potential use of this material as an active layer in organic electronics.

Teat papillomatosis is reported to be one of the factors causing mastitis and milk losses in dairy cattle. Little is known about bovine papillomavirus (BPV) circulation in the European cattle population, and no reports can yet be found about its prevalence in Polish herds. In this study, 177 BPV-like lesions were collected from teats of 109 slaughtered cows. BPV was identified in 39 of the examined animals, using PCR amplification and Sanger dideoxy sequencing. In total, 10 BPV types were isolated, among which the most common were infections caused by types 8 and 7. Macroscopically, “rice-grain” type lesions dominated (76%) and were mainly found on one teat (57.4%). The diversity of BPV types causing teat papillomatosis in Polish cows seems to be large, with nine already known types isolated and a new putative type found. The spread of new types among the worldwide cattle population can be seen for the first time, as type 25 and so called isolates BPV42 and BPV43 were found in the European cattle population.
