Abstract

Le diagnostic et le traitement du cancer laissent rarement les survivants et leurs proches physiquement et psychologiquement indemnes. Les services dont ils ont besoin dépassent le seul traitement médical, c’est-à-dire qu’il leur faut une variété de soins de soutien répondant à leurs besoins physiques, sociaux, informationnels et émotionnels. La présente étude a pour objectif de répertorier les services de soutien destinés aux survivants du cancer, aux membres de leur famille et à leurs proches aidants qui sont disponibles dans la province du Nouveau-Brunswick, au Canada. Pour ce faire, nous avons procédé à une analyse de l’environnement, ce qui nous a permis de constater que les services disponibles dans la province ne sont pas facilement repérables ou accessibles. On a observé tout particulièrement des lacunes dans les services aux survivants, à leur famille et à leurs proches, en phase post-traitement.

Abstract

Cancer diagnosis and treatment often have significant physical and psychological implications for both the survivor and their family/caregivers. Necessary services extend beyond medical treatment and include a variety of supportive care services (SCS) that address individuals’ physical, social, educational, and emotional needs. This study seeks to map the SCS available in the province of New Brunswick (NB), Canada, for cancer survivors, their families, and their caregivers. An environmental scan was conducted to assess current SCS available in NB. While some SCS exist in NB, they are not always easily accessible or identifiable, and gaps in services were prevalent. In particular, a gap in services was found for individuals who are no longer actively receiving cancer treatment, as well as for family members and caregivers.

106. Quantum Kernel for Image Classification of Real World Manufacturing Defects

Abstract

The quantum kernel method results clearly outperformed a classical SVM when analyzing low-resolution images with minimal feature selection on the quantum simulator, with inconsistent results when run on an actual quantum processor. We chose to use an existing quantum kernel method for classification. We applied dynamic decoupling error mitigation using the Mitiq package to the Quantum SVM kernel method, which, to our knowledge, has never been done for quantum kernel methods for image classification. We applied the quantum kernel method to classify real world image data from a manufacturing facility using a superconducting quantum computer. The manufacturing images were used to determine if a product was defective or was produced correctly through the manufacturing process. We also tested the Mitiq dynamical decoupling (DD) methodology to understand effectiveness in decreasing noise-related errors. We also found that the way classical data was encoded onto qubits in quantum states affected our results. All three quantum processing unit (QPU) runs of our angle encoded circuit returned different results, with one run having better than classical results, one run having equivalent to classical results, and a run with worse than classical results. The more complex instantaneous quantum polynomial (IQP) encoding approach showed better precision than classical SVM results when run on a QPU but had a worse recall and F1-score. We found that DD error mitigation did not improve the results of IQP encoded circuits runs and did not have an impact on angle encoded circuits runs on the QPU. In summary, we found that the angle encoded circuit performed the best of the quantum kernel encoding methods on real quantum hardware. In future research projects using quantum kernels to classify images, we recommend exploring other error mitigation techniques than Mitiq DD.

Abstract

Climate changepoint (homogenization) methods abound today, with a myriad of techniques existing in both the climate and statistics literature. Unfortunately, the appropriate changepoint technique to use remains unclear to many. Further complicating issues, changepoint conclusions are not robust to small perturbations in assumptions; for example, allowing for a trend or correlation in the series can drastically change conclusions. This paper is a review of the changepoint topic, with an emphasis on illuminating the models and techniques that allow the scientist to make reliable conclusions. Pitfalls to avoid are demonstrated via actual applications. The discourse begins by narrating the salient statistical features of most climate time series. Thereafter, single and multiple changepoint problems are considered. Several pitfalls are discussed en route and good practices are recommended. While the majority of our applications involve temperature series, other settings are mentioned.

Abstract

While randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold-standard for establishing the efficacy and safety of a medical treatment, real-world evidence (RWE) generated from real-world data (RWD) has been vital in post-approval monitoring and is being promoted for the regulatory process of experimental therapies. An emerging source of RWD is electronic health records (EHRs), which contain detailed information on patient care in both structured (e. g., diagnosis codes) and unstructured (e. g., clinical notes, images) form. Despite the granularity of the data available in EHRs, critical variables required to reliably assess the relationship between a treatment and clinical outcome can be challenging to extract. We provide an integrated data curation and modeling pipeline leveraging recent advances in natural language processing, computational phenotyping, modeling techniques with noisy data to address this fundamental challenge and accelerate the reliable use of EHRs for RWE, as well as the creation of digital twins. The proposed pipeline is highly automated for the task and includes guidance for deployment. 109. Synthetic data enable experiments in atomistic machine learning

Abstract

Machine-learning models are increasingly used to predict properties of atoms in chemical systems. There have been major advances in developing descriptors and regression frameworks for this task, typically starting from (relatively) small sets of quantum-mechanical reference data. Larger datasets of this kind are becoming available, but remain expensive to generate. Here we demonstrate the use of a large dataset that we have "synthetically" labelled with per-atom energies from an existing ML potential model. The cheapness of this process, compared to the quantum-mechanical ground truth, allows us to generate millions of datapoints, in turn enabling rapid experimentation with atomistic ML models from the small- to the large-data regime. This approach allows us here to compare regression frameworks in depth, and to explore visualisation based on learned representations. We also show that learning synthetic data labels can be a useful pre-training task for subsequent fine-tuning on small datasets. In the future, we expect that our open-sourced dataset, and similar ones, will be useful in rapidly exploring deep-learning models in the limit of abundant chemical data.

Abstract

Hybrid plasmonic devices involve a nanostructured metal supporting localized surface plasmons to amplify light-matter interaction, and a non-plasmonic material to functionalize charge excitations. Application-relevant epitaxial heterostructures, however, give rise to ballistic ultrafast dynamics that challenge the conventional semiclassical understanding of unidirectional nanometal-to-substrate energy transfer. We study epitaxial Au nanoislands on WSe$_2$ with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction: this combination of techniques resolves material, energy and momentum of charge-carriers and phonons excited in the heterostructure. We observe a strong non-linear plasmon-exciton interaction that transfers the energy of sub-bandgap photons very efficiently to the semiconductor, leaving the metal cold until non-radiative exciton recombination heats the nanoparticles on hundreds of femtoseconds timescales. Our results resolve a multi-directional energy exchange on timescales shorter than the electronic thermalization of the nanometal. Electron-phonon coupling and diffusive charge-transfer determine the subsequent energy flow. This complex dynamics opens perspectives for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications, while providing a constraining experimental testbed for state-of-the-art modelling.

Abstract

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $V_{cb}$ using $B\to D\ell\nu$ decays. The result is based on $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle II detector corresponding to 189.2/fb of integrated luminosity. The semileptonic decays $B^0\to D^-(\to K^+\pi^-\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ and $B^+\to\bar D^0(\to K^+\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ are reconstructed, where $\ell$ is either electron or a muon. The second $B$ meson in the $\Upsilon(4S)$ event is not explicitly reconstructed. Using the diamond-frame method, we determine the $B$ meson four-momentum and thus the hadronic recoil. We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $\eta_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $\eta_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present star formation rates based on cold and ionized gas measurements of Mrk 266 (NGC 5256), a system composed of two colliding gas-rich galaxies, each hosting an active galactic nucleus. Using $^{12}$CO (1-0) observations with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy (CARMA), we find a total H$_2$ mass in the central region of $1.1\pm0.3\times10^{10}$ $M_\odot$ which leads to a possible future star formation rate of $25\pm10 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. With the Fourier Transform Spectrograph (SITELLE) on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we measure an integrated H$\alpha$ luminosity and estimate a present-day star formation rate of $15\pm2 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ in the core of the system (avoiding the two active nuclei). These results confirm that Mrk 266 is an intermediate stage merger with a relatively high recent star formation rate and enough molecular gas to sustain it for a few hundred million years. Inflowing gas associated with the merger may have triggered both the starburst episode and two AGN but the two galaxy components differ: the region around the SW nucleus appears to be more active than the NE nucleus, which seems relatively quiet. Abstract

We measure the photon-energy spectrum in radiative bottom-meson ($B$) decays into inclusive final states involving a strange hadron and a photon. We use SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions corresponding to $189~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance by the Belle II experiment. The partner $B$ candidates are fully reconstructed using a large number of hadronic channels. The $B \rightarrow X_s \gamma$ partial branching fractions are measured as a function of photon energy in the signal $B$ meson rest frame in eight bins above $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$. The background-subtracted signal yield for this photon energy region is $343 \pm 122$ events. Integrated branching fractions for three photon energy thresholds of $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$, $2.0~\mathrm{GeV}$, and $2.1~\mathrm{GeV}$ are also reported, and found to be in agreement with world averages., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This review provides a comprehensive study of the nonlinear transport properties of magnons, which are electrically emitted or absorbed inside extended YIG films by spin transfer effects via a YIG$\vert$Pt interface. Our purpose is to experimentally elucidate the pertinent picture behind the asymmetric electrical variation of the magnon transconductance analogous to an electric diode. The feature is rooted in the variation of the density of low-lying spin excitations via an electrical shift of the magnon chemical potential. As the intensity of the spin transfer increases in the forward direction (regime of magnon emission), the transport properties of low-energy magnon go through 3 distinct regimes: \textit{i)} at low currents, where the spin current is a linear function of the electrical current, the spin transport is ballistic and set by the film thickness; \textit{ii)} for amplitudes of the order of the damping compensation threshold, it switches to a highly correlated regime limited by magnon-magnon relaxation process and marked by a saturation of the magnon transconductance. Here the main bias, that controls the magnon density, are thermal fluctuations beneath the emitter. \textit{iii)} As the temperature under the emitter approaches the Curie temperature, scattering with high-energy magnons dominates, leading to diffusive transport. We note that such sequence of transport regimes bears analogy with electron hydrodynamic transport in ultra-pure media predicted by Radii Gurzhi. This study restricted to low energy part of the magnon manifold complements part II of this review\cite{kohno_2F}, which concentrates instead on the whole spectrum of propagating magnons.

Abstract

This review presents a comprehensive study of the spatial dispersion of propagating magnons electrically emitted in extended yttrium-iron garnet (YIG) films by the spin transfer effects across a YIG$\vert$Pt interface. Our goal is to provide a generic framework to describe the magnon transconductance inside magnetic films. We experimentally elucidate the relevant spectral contributions by studying the lateral decay of the magnon signal. While most of the injected magnons do not reach the collector, the propagating magnons can be split into two-fluids: \textit{i)} a large fraction of high-energy magnons carrying energy of about $k_B T_0$, where $T_0$ is the lattice temperature, with a characteristic decay length in the sub-micrometer range, and \textit{ii)} a small fraction of low-energy magnons, which are particles carrying energy of about $\hbar \omega_K$, where $\omega_K/(2 \pi)$ is the Kittel frequency, with a characteristic decay length in the micrometer range. Taking advantage of their different physical properties, the low-energy magnons can become the dominant fluid \textit{i)} at large spin transfer rates for the bias causing the emission of magnons, \textit{ii)} at large distance from the emitter, \textit{iii)} at small film thickness, or \textit{iv)} for reduced band mismatch between the YIG below the emitter and the bulk due to variation of the magnon concentration. This broader picture complements part I \cite{kohno_SD}, which focuses solely on the nonlinear transport properties of low-energy magnons.

Abstract

A new implementation of an adiabatically-trained ensemble model is derived that shows significant improvements over classical methods. In particular, empirical results of this new algorithm show that it offers not just higher performance, but also more stability with less classifiers, an attribute that is critically important in areas like explainability and speed-of-inference. In all, the empirical analysis displays that the algorithm can provide an increase in performance on unseen data by strengthening stability of the statistical model through further minimizing and balancing variance and bias, while decreasing the time to convergence over its predecessors.

Abstract

We present an analysis of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$, from 198.0 million pairs of $B\bar{B}$ mesons recorded by the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The decay is reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ meson. The partial branching fractions are measured independently for $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ as functions of $q^{2}$ (momentum transfer squared), using 3896 $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and 5466 $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ decays. The total branching fraction is found to be $(1.426 \pm 0.056 \pm 0.125) \times 10^{-4}$ for $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ decays, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is theoretical.

Abstract

Objective and Approach The COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented levels of mental unwellness and yet there are no reports to date that share Métis-specific data. Our study examined changes in patterns of mental and addictions-related (MHA) outpatient health service utilization using population-based data on Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) citizens before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Administrative health data in Ontario, Canada between 2017 and 2022 was linked with the MNO's Citizenship Registry (2022) under an existing Data Governance and Sharing Agreement. Monthly rates of MHA outpatient visits were compared between the pre-COVID-19 period (March 2017 to February 2020) and post-COVID-19 onset (March 2020 to December 2022), and rate ratios comparing observed and expected rates were derived using Poisson generalized estimating equations. Stratifications by age and sex were examined. Results and Conclusion Among 28,400 MNO citizens (50.3% male; median age 44 years; 28.3% living rurally), the average monthly rate of MHA outpatient visits was 47.4 per 1000 population pre-COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the observed MHA outpatient visit rates were 13% higher than expected (RR=1.13; 95% CI: 1.02-1.26). MHA outpatient visits were higher in females compared to males and MNO citizens aged 30 to 64 years versus older or younger citizens. Implications This study is the first to use population-level study to examine MHA health service use in Métis people. High-quality, contemporary data on the mental health outcomes of MNO citizens is crucial to inform MNO’s Mental Health and Addictions programming, resource allocation and emergency preparedness.

Abstract

Introduction: Cardiac glycosides comprise medications such as digoxin and digitoxin, plants, and even certain toad venoms. Intoxication with cardiac glycosides can lead to hemodynamic instability and cardiac arrest. With this narrative review, our objective was to determine if any therapy used in a near-cardiac arrest state due to cardiac glycoside poisoning could improve survival with favourable functional and neurological outcomes. Methods: We searched the Medline, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases up to February 2022 for controlled trials, observational studies, and case reports. We reviewed studies if participants were exposed to a cardiac glycoside, had hemodynamic instability, and an intervention was attempted to reverse the toxicity. The effect of interventions on (1) survival with favourable functional and neurological outcomes and (2) correction of hemodynamic instability was assessed. Results: Of the 2422 studies found, 73 were included for analysis, of which 58 were case reports or series, and 15 were observational cohorts. Most patients were intoxicated with medication (60 individual cases and 11 observational cohorts). Administration of digoxin immune-Fab fragments was associated with improved hemodynamic status and survival in medication patients. Administration of magnesium, cardioversion, and cardiac pacing was associated with favourable outcomes, while administration of atropine, antiarrhythmics, or calcium was not. Conclusion: In patients with hemodynamic instability due to cardiac glycoside intoxication, digoxin immune-Fab fragments should be given, and magnesium administration, cardioversion, and cardiac pacing can reasonably be attempted.

Objective To understand parental perspectives regarding universal newborn screening (UNS) for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) in Canada.Design A qualitative, patient-led study using the Patient and Community Engagement Research approach consisting of online focus groups and in-depth individual interviews to understand parental preferences regarding UNS for cCMV. Data were analysed iteratively using inductive thematic analysis and narrative story analysis.Setting Canada-wide study conducted via video conference from October to December 2023.Patients 12 participants from five Canadian provinces who self-identified as 18 years of age or older and as having parental lived experience with cytomegalovirus (CMV) or cCMV participated in the study.Results We identified three themes: (1) attitudes about UNS for cCMV, including participants’ unanimous support for UNS and confirmation that parental anxiety is not a deterrent for screening, (2) cCMV diagnosis, including the importance of coupling cCMV diagnosis with access to treatment and medical support and (3) awareness of cCMV, where participants shared their frustration about the lack of public and pregnant people’s awareness of cCMV.Conclusions Parental anxiety is not a deterrent for UNS for cCMV. Children with cCMV and their families deserve every opportunity to attain their best possible outcomes. UNS offers children with cCMV access to early intervention if they need it, and also helps to raise awareness and education to prevent future CMV infections.

Abstract

IntroductionShort-term clinical outcomes from SARS-CoV-2 infection are generally favorable. However, 15–20% of patients report persistent symptoms of at least 12 weeks duration, often referred to as long COVID. Population studies have also demonstrated an increased risk of incident diabetes and cardiovascular disease at 12 months following infection. While imaging studies have identified multi-organ injury patterns in patients with recovered COVID-19, their respective contributions to the disability and morbidity of long COVID is unclear.MethodsA multicenter, observational study of 215 vaccine-naïve patients with clinically recovered COVID-19, studied at 3–6 months following infection, and 133 healthy volunteers without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Patients with recovered COVID-19 were screened for long COVID related symptoms and their impact on daily living. Multi-organ, multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and circulating biomarkers were acquired to document sub-clinical organ pathology. All participants underwent pulmonary function, aerobic endurance (6 min walk test), cognition testing and olfaction assessment. Clinical outcomes were collected up to 1 year from infection. The primary objective of this study is to identify associations between organ injury and disability in patients with long-COVID symptoms in comparison to controls. As a secondary objective, imaging and circulating biomarkers with the potential to exacerbate cardiovascular health were characterized.DiscussionLong-term sequelae of COVID-19 are common and can result in significant disability and cardiometabolic disease. Abstract

BackgroundMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory and degenerative disease of the central nervous system. More than 90,000 Canadians are affected; a cure is yet to be found. Available treatments to manage the disease course are only partially effective. For many years, persons with MS (PwMS) have used cannabis to relax, to reduce pain and spasticity, or to improve sleep and daily functioning, despite the lack of scientific evidence on the efficacy of specific cannabinoids [i.e., tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD)] on these MS symptoms. The purpose of this clinical trial is to assess the effectiveness of different doses of these cannabinoids, alone or combined, on spasticity relief, compared to placebo. Moreover, we aim to determine which treatment is best effective to address other key MS conditions.MethodsA double-blinded, randomized, factorial, placebo-controlled trial will be performed. We intend to include up to 250 PwMS aged over 21 recruited from the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal MS Clinic. PwMS will be randomly assigned on a 1:1:1:1 ratio to one of the trial arms: THC alone, CBD alone, THC/CBD combination, or placebo, using stratified blocked randomization, with random blocks within each stratum. The primary outcome is a self-assessment of spasticity using the mean Numeric Rating Scale score over 7 days. The main outcome will be the difference in this score at 4 weeks compared to baseline. Secondary outcomes include assessments of spasticity as measured by a clinician, pain, fatigue, sleep, bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunction, restless legs syndrome, mental health, quality of life, mobility, cognitive functioning, and adverse events. Treatment responders are eligible for a 12-week extension phase, using the same treatment allocation and assessments.DiscussionPrevious clinical studies examined the efficacy of cannabis-based medicines in PwMS, mostly using products with 1:1 THC/CBD ratio. The major barrier to effectively use cannabis in real-world clinical settings is the lack of evidence on benefits of specific cannabinoids and information on possible related risks. L’apprentissage en ligne dans des formations asynchrones est une composante essentielle de l’apprentissage tout au long de la vie. Toutefois, les personnes aînées en sont l’un des groupes les plus exclus. Il importe de les considérer, car plus tôt que tard, elles pourraient être confrontées à la nécessité de suivre ce type de formation. Pensons aux travailleurs expérimentés dans l’obligation de suivre une formation asynchrone déployée par leurs ordres professionnels pour continuer à pratiquer. Le X s’est associé à l’entreprise X, spécialisée en solutions éducatives en ligne, pour adapter une formation asynchrone conçue pour des travailleurs pour la rendre accessible à des personnes aînées. L’adaptation de la formation asynchrone a été décrite dans un canevas de formation qui synthétise les principes de conception à considérer pour le développement d’interfaces conviviales en e-learning pour les personnes aînées. Cet article décrit la recherche-action qui a permis son développement avec la participation de neuf personnes du Québec âgées de 71 à 83 ans. L’utilisation de deux cadres conceptuels, la conception centrée sur l’utilisateur et la conception d’interfaces utilisateurs pour une population vieillissante, ont été utilisés pour soutenir l’adaptation de la formation asynchrone et développer le canevas.

Summary: Background: Research in healthy young adults shows that characteristic patterns of brain activity define individual “brain-fingerprints” that are unique to each person. However, variability in these brain-fingerprints increases in individuals with neurological conditions, challenging the clinical relevance and potential impact of the approach. Our study shows that brain-fingerprints derived from neurophysiological brain activity are associated with pathophysiological and clinical traits of individual patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: We created brain-fingerprints from task-free brain activity recorded through magnetoencephalography in 79 PD patients and compared them with those from two independent samples of age-matched healthy controls (N = 424 total). We decomposed brain activity into arrhythmic and rhythmic components, defining distinct brain-fingerprints for each type from recording durations of up to 4 min and as short as 30 s. Findings: The arrhythmic spectral components of cortical activity in patients with Parkinson’s disease are more variable over short periods, challenging the definition of a reliable brain-fingerprint. However, by isolating the rhythmic components of cortical activity, we derived brain-fingerprints that distinguished between patients and healthy controls with about 90% accuracy. The most prominent cortical features of the resulting Parkinson’s brain-fingerprint are mapped to polyrhythmic activity in unimodal sensorimotor regions. Leveraging these features, we also demonstrate that Parkinson’s symptom laterality can be decoded directly from cortical neurophysiological activity. Furthermore, our study reveals that the cortical topography of the Parkinson’s brain-fingerprint aligns with that of neurotransmitter systems affected by the disease’s pathophysiology. Interpretation: The increased moment-to-moment variability of arrhythmic brain-fingerprints challenges patient differentiation and explains previously published results. We outline patient-specific rhythmic brain signaling features that provide insights into both the neurophysiological signature and symptom laterality of Parkinson’s disease. Thus, the proposed definition of a rhythmic brain-fingerprint of Parkinson’s disease may contribute to novel, refined approaches to patient stratification. Symmetrically, we discuss how rhythmic brain-fingerprints may contribute to the improved identification and testing of therapeutic neurostimulation targets. Abstract

Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol), causes losses in tomato production worldwide, with major impacts on Californian tomato processing. Single-gene resistance is the primary management tool, but its efficacy has been compromised following the emergence of two successive resistance-breaking races, which, in California, emerged within 12 years of resistance deployment. Fol race 3-resistant (F3) processing tomato cultivars (containing the I3 resistance gene) were deployed in the state starting in approximately 2009. The emergence of a new resistance-breaking race (which would be called race 4) is imminent, and early detection will be critical to delay the spread while new resistance is sought. The detection of Fol race 4 is challenged by the lack of validated, rapid, and accurate diagnostic tools. In evaluating in planta phenotyping methods, this study found that rapid seedling phenotyping is not reliable and generates false positives for nonpathogens. Longer (10 weeks) mature plant assays are the most reliable, but may not be sufficiently timely. Abstract

We report a measurement of decay-time dependent $CP$-violating parameters in $B^0 \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S K^0_S$ decays. We use $(198.0 \pm 3.0) \times 10^6\ B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters are $\mathcal{S} = -1.86\ _{-0.46}^{+0.91}~{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.09~{\rm (syst)}$ and $\mathcal{A} = -0.22\ _{-0.27}^{+0.30}~{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.04~{\rm (syst)}$, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; added a reference

Abstract

We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0$. The results are based on a data set containing 198 million bottom-antibottom meson pairs corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $190\;\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II detector in energy-asymmetric electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. We measure ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = (6.12 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.53)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = (14.30 \pm 0.69 \pm 0.79)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = -0.085 \pm 0.085 \pm 0.019}$, and ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = 0.014 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.010}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve a previous Belle II measurement and agree with the world averages.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to \rho^+ \rho^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\to\rho^+\rho^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $\phi_2$.

Abstract

RISTRETTO is the evolution of the original idea of coupling the VLT instruments SPHERE and ESPRESSO, aiming at High Dispersion Coronagraphy. RISTRETTO is a visitor instrument that should enable the characterization of the atmospheres of nearby exoplanets in reflected light, by using the technique of high-contrast, high-resolution spectroscopy. Its goal is to observe Prox Cen b and other planets placed at about 35mas from their star, i.e. 2lambda/D at lambda=750nm. The instrument is composed of an extreme adaptive optics, a coronagraphic Integral Field Unit, and a diffraction-limited spectrograph (R=140.000, lambda=620-840 nm). We present the status of our studies regarding the coronagraphic IFU and the XAO system. The first in particular is based on a modified version of the PIAA apodizer, allowing nulling on the first diffraction ring. Our proposed design has the potential to reach > 50% coupling and <1E-4 contrast at 2lambda/D in median seeing conditions., Comment: Proceeding of SPIE Telescopes+Instrumentation 2022. Abstract

We report a study of $B \to J/\psi(\ell^{+}\ell^{-})K$ decays, where $\ell$ represents an electron or a muon, using $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The data were collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider during 2019-2021, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The measured quantities are the branching fractions (${\mathcal B}$) of the decay channels $B^{+} \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-})K^{+}$, $B^{+} \to J/\psi(\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) K^{+}$, $B^{0} \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-}) K^{0}_{S}$, and $B^{0} \to J/\psi(\mu^{+}\mu^{-})K^{0}_{S}$; the lepton-flavor-dependent isospin asymmetries for the electron [$A_{I}\left(B \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-}) K\right)$] and muon [$A_{I}\left(B \to J/\psi(\mu^{+} \mu^{-}) K\right)$] channels; and the ratios of branching fractions between the muon and electron channels for the charged [$R_{K^{+}}\left(J/\psi\right)$] and neutral kaon [$R_{K^{0}}\left(J/\psi\right)$] case. The measurements are consistent with the world-average values.

Abstract

Abstract Background This study compares emergency department (ED) revisits for patients receiving hospital-based substance-use support compared to those who did not receive specialized addiction services at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Methods The study is a retrospective observational study using administrative data from all patients presenting with substance use disorder (SUD) at Health Sciences North from January 1, 2018, and August 31, 2022 with ICD-10 codes from the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and the National Ambulatory Care Database (NACRS). There were two interventions under study: addiction medicine consult services (AMCS group), and specialized addiction medicine unit (AMU group). The AMCS is a consult service offered for patients in the ED and those who are admitted to the hospital. The AMU is a specialized inpatient medical unit designed to offer addiction support to stabilize patients that operates under a harm-reduction philosophy. The primary outcome was all cause ED revisit within 30 days of the index ED or hospital visit. The secondary outcome was all observed ED revisits in the study period. Kaplan–Meier curves were used to measure the proportion of 30-day revisits by exposure group. Odds ratios and Hazard Ratios were calculated using logistic regression models with random effects and Cox-proportional hazard model respectively. Results A total of 5,367 patients with 10,871 ED index visits, and 2,127 revisits between 2018 and 2022 are included in the study. 45% (2,340/5,367) of patient were not admitted to hospital. 30-day revisits were less likely among the intervention group: Addiction Medicine Consult Services (AMCS) in the ED significantly reduced the odds of revisits (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.39–0.71, p

Abstract

Abstract Background Social determinants of health (SDH), including “the conditions in which individuals are born, grow, work, live and age” affect child health and well-being. Several studies have synthesized evidence about the influence of SDH on childhood injury risks and outcomes. However, there is no systematic evidence about the impact of SDH on accessing care and quality of care once a child has suffered an injury. We aim to evaluate the extent to which access to care and quality of care after injury are affected by children and adolescents’ SDH. Methods Using Cochrane methodology, we will conduct a systematic review including observational and experimental studies evaluating the association between social/material elements contributing to health disparities, using the PROGRESS-Plus framework: place of residence, race/ethnicity/culture/language, occupation, gender/sex, religion, education, socioeconomic status, and social capital and care received by children and adolescents (≤ 19 years of age) after injury. We will consult published literature using PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Academic Search Premier and grey literature using Google Scholar from their inception to a maximum of 6 months prior to submission for publication. Two reviewers will independently perform study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment for included studies. The risk of bias will be assessed using the ROBINS-E and ROB-2 tools respectively for observational and experimental study designs. We will analyze data to perform narrative syntheses, and if enough studies are identified, we will conduct a meta-analysis using random effects models. Discussion This systematic review will provide a synthesis of evidence on the association between SDH and pediatric trauma care (access to care and quality of care) that clinicians and policymakers can use to better tailor care systems and promote equitable access and quality of care for all children. We will share our findings through clinical rounds, conferences, and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Systematic review registration PROSPERO CRD42023408467

Abstract Characterization of Parkinson’s disease (PD) progression using real-world evidence could guide clinical trial design and identify subpopulations. Efforts to curate research populations, the increasing availability of real-world data, and advances in natural language processing, particularly large language models, allow for a more granular comparison of populations than previously possible. This study includes two research populations and two real-world data-derived (RWD) populations. The research populations are the Harvard Biomarkers Study (HBS, N = 935), a longitudinal biomarkers cohort study with in-person structured study visits; and Fox Insights (N = 36,660), an online self-survey-based research study of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Real-world cohorts are the Optum Integrated Claims-electronic health records (N = 157,475), representing wide-scale linked medical and claims data and de-identified data from Mass General Brigham (MGB, N = 22,949), an academic hospital system. Structured, de-identified electronic health records data at MGB are supplemented using a manually validated natural language processing with a large language model to extract measurements of PD progression. Abstract

Abstract A string of fierce fires broke out in Chile in the austral summer 2023, just six years after the record-breaking 2017 fire season. Favored by extreme weather conditions, fire activity has dramatically risen in recent years in this Andean country. A total of 1.7 million ha. burned during the last decade, tripling figures of the prior decade. Six of the seven most destructive fire seasons on record occurred since 2014. Here, we analyze the progression during the last two decades of the weather conditions associated with increased fire risk in Central Chile (30°–39° S). Fire weather conditions (including high temperatures, low humidity, dryness, and strong winds) increase the potential for wildfires, once ignited, to rapidly spread. We show that the concurrence of El Niño and climate-fueled droughts and heatwaves boost the local fire risk and have decisively contributed to the intense fire activity recently seen in Central Chile. Our results also suggest that the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean variability modulates the seasonal fire weather in the country, driving in turn the interannual fire activity. The signature of the warm anomalies in the Niño 1 + 2 region (0°–10° S, 90° W–80° W) is apparent on the burned area records seen in Central Chile in 2017 and 2023.

Abstract

We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to \rho^+(\to \pi^+\pi^0(\to \gamma\gamma))\rho^0(\to \pi^+\pi^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays reported by Belle II.

Abstract

We report the measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ decay in $e^+ e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \overline{B}$ data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The signal yield is measured to be $121\pm 29\,\hbox{(stat.)}$, leading to the branching fraction ${\cal B}\left(B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \gamma\right) = \left(7.3 \pm 1.8\,\hbox{(stat.)} \pm 1.0\,\hbox{(syst.)} \right)\times 10^{-6}$, which agrees with the known value., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a reconstruction of the semileptonic decays $B^0 \to \pi^- e^+ \nu_e$ and $B^+ \to \pi^0 e^+ \nu_e$ in a sample corresponding to 189.3 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data, using events where the partner $B$-meson is reconstructed from a large variety of hadronic channels via a tagging algorithm known as the full-event-interpretation. We determine the partial branching fractions in three bins of the squared momentum transfer to the leptonic system using fits to the distribution of the square of the missing mass. The partial branching fractions are summed to determine $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \pi^- e^+ \nu_e)$ = (1.43 $\pm$ 0.27(stat) $\pm$ 0.07(syst)) $\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \pi^0 e^+ \nu_e)$ = (8.33 $\pm$ 1.67(stat) $\pm$ 0.55(syst)) $\times 10^{-5}$. We extract a first Belle II measurement of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\mathrm{ub}}|$, with $|V_{\mathrm{ub}}|$ = (3.88 $\pm$ 0.45) $\times 10^{-3}$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2111.00710, arXiv:2008.08819

Abstract

We report measurements of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($A_{CP}$) of the charmless decay $B^{0} \to K^0 \pi^0$ at Belle II. A sample of $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions, corresponding to $189.8 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} \pi^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} \pi^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst)$.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, where $\ell^+\ell^- = \mu^+\mu^-$ or $e^+e^-$, using electron-positron collisions recorded at an energy at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ mass and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The data was collected during 2019--2021 by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. We reconstruct $K^{\ast}(892)$ candidates in the $K^+\pi^-$, $K_{S}^{0}\pi^+$, and $K^+\pi^0$ final states. The signal yields with statistical uncertainties are $22\pm 6$, $18 \pm 6$, and $38 \pm 9$ for the decays $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\mu^+\mu^-$, $B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-$, and $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$, respectively. We measure the branching fractions of these decays for the entire range of the dilepton mass, excluding the very low mass region to suppress the $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\gamma(\to e^+e^-)$ background and regions compatible with decays of charmonium resonances, to be \begin{equation} {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\mu^+\mu^-) = (1.19 \pm 0.31 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-) = (1.42 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-) = (1.25 \pm 0.30 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, \end{equation} where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results, limited by sample size, are the first measurements of $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$ branching fractions from the Belle II experiment.

Abstract

Metastable phases present a promising route to expand the functionality of complex materials. Of particular interest are light-induced metastable phases that are inaccessible under equilibrium conditions, as they often host new, emergent properties switchable on ultrafast timescales. However, the processes governing the trajectories to such hidden phases remain largely unexplored. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the formation of a hidden quantum state in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ upon photoexcitation. Our results reveal the nonthermal character of the transition governed by a collective charge-density-wave excitation. Utilizing a double-pulse excitation of the structural mode, we show vibrational coherent control of the phase-transition efficiency. Our demonstration of exceptional control, switching speed, and stability of the hidden phase are key for device applications., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures
