Abstract

We introduce a physically relevant stochastic representation of the rotating shallow water equations. The derivation relies mainly on a stochastic transport principle and on a decomposition of the fluid flow into a large-scale component and a noise term that models the unresolved flow components. As for the classical (deterministic) system, this scheme, referred to as modelling under location uncertainty (LU), conserves the global energy of any realization and provides the possibility to generate an ensemble of physically relevant random simulations with a good trade-off between the model error representation and the ensemble’s spread. To maintain numerically the energy conservation feature, we combine an energy (in space) preserving discretization of the underlying deterministic model with approximations of the stochastic terms that are based on standard finite volume/difference operators. The LU derivation, built from the very same conservation principles as the usual geophysical models, together with the numerical scheme proposed can be directly used in existing dynamical cores of global numerical weather prediction models. The capabilities of the proposed framework is demonstrated for an inviscid test case on the f-plane and for a barotropically unstable jet on the sphere.

Abstract

From the mid-1980s R.L. Ellis, I. Gohberg and D.C. Lay wrote several papers on systems of orthogonal matrix polynomials and matrix functions, culminating in the monograph [3] by Ellis and Gohberg, where additional background and further references can be found. Inverse problems related to these orthogonal systems were first considered in [2] for scalar-valued Wiener functions on the circle, both for unilateral systems (onefold problem) and bilateral systems (twofold problem). In later work extensions of the onefold inverse problem on the circle were considered for square matrix-valued polynomials in [5] and for square matrix-valued Wiener functions in [4]. Nonsquare versions were only recently dealt with in [12] and [13] for the onefold problems on the circle and real line, respectively, while nonsquare twofold problems on the circle and real line were solved in [9] and [10], respectively. Abstract

Since 2020, the global COVID-19 crisis has been exposing numerous shortcomings in society and the global economy. In Germany, for example, archaic work structures prevail in parts of the food industry; other industry sectors blame COVID-19 for their long standing crises, thereby deliberately diverting attention from existing structural deficits and missed opportunities. Now is the time to examine and expose (mis)developments in order to understand the current global situation. A collective desire for attuned development goals and social (value) orientation has become evident. Quality of life is challenging monetary wealth as the sole indicator of prosperity and individual satisfaction. Today, people accept change, if it secures health, promotes new working environments, and achieves climate goals. Consequently, the “old” growth paradigm, based on maximizing individual benefit, is ready to be replaced by a new paradigm that maximizes societal benefit. Solidary action paves the way towards sustainability. Not to learn form a crisis is not to understand the crisis! Corona offers us an opportunity to rethink and reset. Can we utilize the pandemic experiences to increase dynamics in realizing the 17 UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), or ensure that we achieve them at all? We, a group of 26 experts from society, science, and politics discussed this issue in a three-day workshop in October 2021. We consider the following six jointly developed demands essential steps to leave behind a world worth living in.

Abstract

Research has been conducted on the nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti. Results indicate that the production of the symbiotically active extracellular polysaccharides II in S. meliloti strain depends on the presence of the expR gene functional copy.
