On treatment of vinyl chloride epoxide (4) with water, of chloroethylene carbonate (9) with aqueous bases, of vinyl acetate (1) or ethyl vinyl ether (6) with aqueous potassium chlorate and catalytic amounts of osmium tetroxide, glycolaldehyde (5) was formed (scheme 1). The not isolated aldehyde 5, when submitted to the Zelinsky-Stadnikoff amino acid synthesis, afforded DL-serine in 70% yield. The latter method, when applied directly to the “masked” glycolaldehydes 2, 7, 9, 10, vinylene carbonate (11), 13 or 14, also gave DL-serine (yields 35–70%), whereas with 4 no serine formation could be detected (scheme 1). Previous studies have shown that cefoperazone given in frequent, large doses is effective in the treatment of infection in patients with cancer. The pharmacodynamics of 2- and 4-g doses of cefoperazone administered either as a single dose or at 12-hour intervals were studied in an in vitro model that simulates infection in a neutropenic patient. One strain each of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (minimal inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 2 micrograms/ml), Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 1 microgram/ml), Escherichia coli (MIC = 0.06 micrograms/ml), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (MIC = 0.25 micrograms/ml) was studied. The initial dose reduced the inoculum by approximately 3 logs for the Pseudomonas and the staphylococci and 3 to 5 logs for the other organisms. No significant differences in killing were found between the 2- and 4-g doses. Regrowth of Pseudomonas and staphylococci occurred with the single dose but not with the every-12-hour regimen. These data support the clinical use of cefoperazone in doses every 12 hours.

Metaproteomics has matured into a powerful tool to assess functional interactions in microbial communities. While many metaproteomic workflows are available, the impact of method choice on results remains unclear. Here, we carry out a community-driven, multi-laboratory comparison in metaproteomics: the critical assessment of metaproteome investigation study (CAMPI). Based on well-established workflows, we evaluate the effect of sample preparation, mass spectrometry, and bioinformatic analysis using two samples: a simplified, laboratory-assembled human intestinal model and a human fecal sample. We observe that variability at the peptide level is predominantly due to sample processing workflows, with a smaller contribution of bioinformatic pipelines. These peptide-level differences largely disappear at the protein group level. While differences are observed for predicted community composition, similar functional profiles are obtained across workflows. CAMPI demonstrates the robustness of present-day metaproteomics research, serves as a template for multi-laboratory studies in metaproteomics, and provides publicly available data sets for benchmarking future developments., The authors present CAMPI, a large-scale multi-lab comparison of diverse metaproteomics workflows. CAMPI provides insights into the robustness of current methods, suggests further improvements to the field, and may pave the way for future community-driven metaproteomics projects.

In Experiment 1, children performed a Simon task after a spatially compatible or incompatible task. Results showed a Simon effect after the spatially compatible task and a reversed Simon effect after the spatially incompatible task. In Experiments 2-5, an identical procedure was adopted with adult participants, who performed the Simon task immediately after, a day after, or a week after the spatial compatibility task. Experiment 6 established a baseline for the Simon effect. Results showed a Simon effect after the spatially compatible task and no Simon effect or a reversed Simon effect after the spatially incompatible task. A modified version of the computational model of M. Zorzi and C. Umilta (1995) was used to compare possible accounts of the findings. The best account exploits 2 types of short-term-memory links between stimulus and response and their interaction with long-term-memory links.
