101. Selected Knowledge Base on Remote Learning Support for English Learners

Abstract: This document summarizes a review of research, evaluation, resources, and stakeholder knowledge related to the topic of remote support for English Learners. Databases used for conducting this review included Google Scholar, ERIC, and JSTOR. Search terms used include but are not limited to "remote learning support English learners"; "English language learners" AND "remote education". However, searches within these databases returned limited applicable resources. Many of the peer-reviewed articles found within these search parameters returned results mostly applicable to adult learners. It seems as though much of this research for K-12 learners will be forthcoming. Thus, for purposes of this review, resources were included from trusted organizations. These resources were found through Google searches using phrases such as "EL students remote learning support" and "EL student support COVID-19". These resources provide information pertinent to the current COVID-19 situation, information which is seemingly not yet widely available in peer-reviewed journals. Findings have been separated into two tables: one includes links to online resources and one includes peer-reviewed articles. Despite the difference in resource type, findings across resources share common themes to consider.

Abstract: Complications of portal hypertension, including ascites, gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatic hydrothorax, and hepatic encephalopathy, are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite few high-quality randomized controlled trials to guide therapeutic decisions, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation has emerged as a crucial therapeutic option to treat complications of portal hypertension. In North America, the decision to perform TIPS involves gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and interventional radiologists, but TIPS creation is performed by interventional radiologists. This is in contrast to other parts of the world where TIPS creation is performed primarily by hepatologists. Thus, the successful use of TIPS in North America is dependent on a multidisciplinary approach and technical expertise, so as to optimize outcomes. Recently, new procedural techniques, TIPS stent technology, and indications for TIPS have emerged. As a result, practices and outcomes vary greatly across institutions and significant knowledge gaps exist. In this consensus statement, the Advancing Liver Therapeutic Approaches group critically reviews the application of TIPS in the management of portal hypertension. Advancing Liver Therapeutic Approaches convened a multidisciplinary group of North American experts from hepatology, interventional radiology, transplant surgery, nephrology, cardiology, pulmonology, and hematology to critically review existing literature and develop practice-based recommendations for the use of TIPS in patients with any cause of portal hypertension in terms of candidate selection, procedural best practices and, post-TIPS management; and to develop areas of consensus for TIPS indications and the prevention of complications. Finally, future research directions are identified related to TIPS for the management of portal hypertension.

Abstract: Implementation support practitioners are professionals who support organisations, leaders and staff in their implementation of evidence-informed practices and policies. They identify, contextualise and improve the use of evidenced implementation strategies in a range of settings. They also build implementation capacity among teams, organisations and systems. This guide identifies the competencies that implementation support practitioners need to support effective implementation and scaling of evidence-informed practices, programmes and policies, to improve outcomes for people and communities. One reason this guide is useful is that competencies for implementation support practice can be integrated into higher education curricula and training for social work and health care, certificate programmes for professionals working in human services, and ongoing professional development for leaders and practitioners charged with supporting the use of evidence to improve population outcomes. It should be of use to anyone interested in developing the competencies of professionals who are facilitating and supporting the implementation of changes in service delivery. It is designed as a tool for reflection, allowing people to have conversations about the competencies that are fundamental to implementation support practice. Abstract: We demonstrate the fabrication of micron-wide tungsten silicide superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors on a silicon substrate using laser lithography. We show saturated internal detection efficiencies with wire widths from 0.59$\mu$m to 1.43$\mu$m under illumination at 1550nm. We demonstrate both straight wires, as well as meandered structures. Single-photon sensitivity is shown in devices up to 4mm in length. Abstract: ObjectiveTo identify the autoantigen in 2 individuals with possible seronegative paraneoplastic neuropathy.MethodsSerum and CSF were screened by tissue-based assay and panned for candidate autoantibodies by phage display immunoprecipitation sequencing (PhIP-Seq). The candidate antigen was validated by immunostaining knockout tissue and HEK 293T cell-based assay.ResultsCase 1 presented with gait instability, distal lower extremity numbness, and paresthesias after a recent diagnosis of serous uterine and fallopian carcinoma. Case 2 had a remote history of breast adenocarcinoma and presented with gait instability, distal lower extremity numbness, and paresthesias that progressed to generalized weakness. CSF and serum from both patients immunostained the axon initial segment (AIS) and node of Ranvier (NoR) of mice and enriched βIV-spectrin by PhIP-Seq. Patient CSF and serum failed to immunostain NoRs in dorsal root sensory neurons from βI/βIV-deficient mice. βIV-spectrin autoantibodies were confirmed by overexpression of AIS and nodal βIV-spectrin isoforms Σ1 and Σ6 by a cell-based assay. βIV-spectrin was not enriched in a combined 4,815 PhIP-Seq screens of healthy and other neurologic disease patients.DiscussionTherefore, βIV-spectrin autoantibodies may be a marker of paraneoplastic neuropathy.Classification of evidenceThis study provides Class IV evidence that βIV-spectrin antibodies are specific autoantibody biomarkers for paraneoplastic neuropathy.

118. Faculty Diversity and the Starting Salaries of Business Students

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to understand if undergraduate business students' experience in a collegiate learning environment that includes interaction with a racially diverse faculty allows them to realize higher starting salaries than students without such experience. Research from this study has the potential to provide business schools with critical information necessary for decision making. Data from a period of three years was accumulated for institutions included in this study from IPEDS, College Scorecard, and The Carnegie Foundation to represent factors relating to the inputs students bring to college, the environment in which they operate during their studies, and the outcomes that result following graduation. The impact of the variable of interest was examined using both Ordinary Least Squares Regression and Fixed Effect Analysis. Using the OLS model the regression analysis identified a statistically significant positive relationship between the racial diversity of the faculty and business student starting salaries at the 1% level. The fixed effect regression analysis found no statistically significant relationship between the diversity of faculty and business student starting salary. Ultimately, this study expands the research exploring the importance of the racial diversity of faculty and signifies the importance of further research in this area. Abstract: This document summarizes a review of research, evaluation, resources, and stakeholder knowledge related to the topic of translation services for schools and districts. Databases used for conducting this review included Google Scholar and ERIC. Literature from peer-reviewed, scholarly journals was reviewed (noted with an asterisk), along with reports on translation services from reputable institutions. This review also includes information on specific translation services as well as information from trustworthy organizations on best practices for communicating with multilingual families. The search also resulted in translation and communication guidelines and plans for various states and districts. Overall, findings of this review suggest that translation services, when used appropriately and when accompanied with professional development and support, can help schools effectively communicate with all families.

Abstract: Scalable quantum photonics relies on interfacing many optical components under mutually compatible operating conditions. To that end, we demonstrate that spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in nonlinear waveguides, a standard technology for generating entangled photon pairs, squeezed states, and heralded single photons, is fully compatible with cryogenic operating conditions required for superconducting detectors. This is necessary for the proliferation of integrated quantum photonics in integration platforms exploiting quasi-phase-matched second-order nonlinear interactions. We investigate how cryogenic operation at 4 K affects the SPDC process by comparing the heralding efficiency, second-order correlation function and spectral properties with operation at room temperature., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Background: Evidence of overlap between endometriosis and chronic pain conditions is emerging; however, little is known about how the pain experience differs based on the presence or absence of endometriosis. Objectives: In a sample of women reporting chronic pelvic–abdominal pain (CPP), the aim of this study was to characterize differences in pain symptomatology between women with and without endometriosis and to examine the influence of chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs) on pain among these two groups. Design: This was a cross-sectional study, based on an online survey. Methods: Participants (aged 18+ years) completed a survey collecting pain diagnoses and symptoms assessing pelvic pain severity, pain interference, and pain impact. Independent sample t -tests, chi-square, and multiple linear regression models were employed to analyze group differences in pain symptomatology and COPCs. Results: Of the 525 respondents with CPP, 25% (n = 133) reported having endometriosis. Women with endometriosis were younger at the onset of pelvic pain, relative to women without endometriosis ( p = 0.04). There were no differences in age, race, ethnicity, or duration of pelvic pain between women with and without endometriosis. Women with endometriosis reported higher pelvic pain severity (+0.8, 95% CI = 0.4–1.1), pain interference (+5.9, 95% CI = 2.4–9.3), and pain impact (+1.9, 95% CI = 0.8–2.9). Abstract: Background: Little is known about the prevalence of cellular senescence among immune cells (i.e., immune cells expressing senescence markers, iSCs) nor is there a gold-standard to efficiently measure iSCs. Major depressive disorder (MDD) in older adults has been associated with many hallmarks of senescence in whole blood, leukocytes, and plasma, supporting a strong connection between iSCs and MDD. Here, we investigated the prevalence and phenotype of iSCs in older adults with MDD. Using a single-cell phenotypic approach, circulating immune cells were examined for iSC biomarkers and their relationship to depression and inflammation.Results: PBMCs from older adults with MDD (aged 69.75 ± 5.23 years) and healthy controls (aged 71.25 ± 8.8 years) were examined for immune subset distribution and senescence biomarkers (i.e., lack of proliferation, senescence-associated heterochromatin foci (SAHF), and DNA damage). Dual-expression of SAHF and DNA damage was categorized by low, intermediate, and high expression. A significant increase in the number of high expressing total PBMCs (p = 0.01), monocytes (p = 0.008), a trending increase in the number of high expressing CD4 T cells (p = 0.06) was observed overall in those with MDD. There was also a significantly lower proportion of intermediate expressing cells in monocytes and CD4 T cells in MDD (p = 0.01 and p = 0.05, respectively). Correlation analysis revealed associations between iSCs and mRNA expression of factors related to SASP and immune cell function.Conclusion: MDD is associated with increased senescent cell biomarkers in immune cell populations delineated by distinct levels of SAHF and DNA damage. Inflammatory markers might serve as potent indicators of iSC burden in MDD.

Abstract: Plants are remarkable in their ability to adapt to changing environments, with receptor-like kinases (RLKs) playing a pivotal role in perceiving and transmitting environmental cues into cellular responses. Despite extensive research on RLKs from the plant kingdom, the function and activity of many kinases, i.e., their substrates or “clients”, remain uncharted. To validate a novel client prediction workflow and learn more about an important RLK, this study focuses on P2K1 (DORN1), which acts as a receptor for extracellular ATP (eATP), playing a crucial role in plant stress resistance and immunity. We designed a Kinase-Client (KiC) assay library of 225 synthetic peptides, incorporating previously identified P2K phosphorylated peptides and novel predictions from a deep-learning phosphorylation site prediction model (MUsite) and a trained hidden Markov model (HMM) based tool, HMMER. Screening the library against purified P2K1 cytosolic domain (CD), we identified 46 putative substrates, including 34 novel clients, 27 of which may be novel peptides, not previously identified experimentally. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis among phosphopeptide candidates revealed proteins associated with important biological processes in metabolism, structure development, and response to stress, as well as molecular functions of kinase activity, catalytic activity, and transferase activity. We offer selection criteria for efficient further in vivo experiments to confirm these discoveries. This approach not only expands our knowledge of P2K1’s substrates and functions but also highlights effective prediction algorithms for identifying additional potential substrates. Overall, the results support use of the KiC assay as a valuable tool in unraveling the complexities of plant phosphorylation and provide a foundation for predicting the phosphorylation landscape of plant species based on peptide library results.

Abstract: IntroductionWe previously demonstrated efficacy of an 8-antigen recombinant subunit vaccine against a single species homologous Teladorsagia circumcincta challenge in lambs and in lambing ewes in pen trials. We subsequently demonstrated efficacy of a simplified, 2-antigen, version of this vaccine in lambs in pen trials. Here, we test both vaccines in lambing ewes in a field setting.MethodsIn the work presented here, 12 adjacent plots were seeded with a mixed infection of several common species of parasitic nematodes of sheep in temperate regions, including T. circumcincta. Ewes (n = 144), in groups of 12, grazed for 2 years on these plots and, in the first year, six of these groups of ewes were vaccinated with a 2-antigen prototype vaccine against T. circumcincta prior to mating and then again prior to lambing. In the following year these ewes were immunised again, this time with the 8-antigen prototype vaccine against T. circumcincta prior to mating and then prior to lambing. Throughout both seasons antigen-specific serum antibody levels in ewes and faecal worm egg counts (FEC) in ewes and their lambs were monitored, along with nematode species diversity at lambing.ResultsImmunised ewes produced elevated serum antibody levels to each of the vaccine antigens following immunisation but their FEC levels were not statistically significantly impacted by vaccination with either vaccine. FEC levels were also not impacted in lambs co-grazing the pastures with these immunised ewes. Nematode species diversity was not significantly impacted by vaccination in either year.DiscussionThe immunosuppressive effects of co-infecting gastrointestinal nematodes, the absence of vaccine cross-protection against co-infecting species and the influence of the periparturient relaxation in immunity probably all contributed to the inability of either vaccine to protect against T. circumcincta infection in field trials in the work presented here.

Abstract: Contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, and per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), primarily reach the Arctic through long-range atmospheric and oceanic transport. However, local sources within the Arctic also contribute to the levels observed in the environment, including legacy sources and new sources that arise from activities associated with increasing commercial and industrial development. The City of Iqaluit in Frobisher Bay, Nunavut (Canada), has seen rapid population growth and associated development during recent decades yet remains a site of interest for ocean protection, where Inuit continue to harvest country food. In the present study, seven dated marine sediment cores collected in Koojesse Inlet near Iqaluit, and from sites in inner and outer Frobisher Bay, respectively, were analyzed for total mercury (THg), major and trace elements, PAHs, PCBs, and PFASs. The sedimentary record in Koojesse Inlet shows a period of Aroclor 1260-like PCB input concurrent with military site presence in the 1950–60s, followed by decades of input of pyrogenic PAHs, averaging about ten times background levels. Near-surface sediments in Koojesse Inlet also show evidence of transient local-source inputs of THg and PFASs, and recycling or continued slow release of PCBs from legacy land-based sources. Differences in PFAS congener composition clearly distinguish the local sources from long-range transport. Outside Koojesse Inlet but still in inner Frobisher Bay, 9.2 km from Iqaluit, sediments showed evidence of both local source (PCB) and long-range transport. In outer Frobisher Bay, an up-core increase in THg and PFASs in sediments may be explained by ongoing inputs of these contaminants from long-range transport. The context for ocean protection and country food harvesting in this region of the Arctic clearly involves both local sources and long-range transport, with past human activities leaving a long legacy insofar as levels of persistent organic pollutants are concerned.

Abstract: Decomposing complex unitary evolution into a series of constituent components is a cornerstone of practical quantum information processing. While the decomposition of an n×n unitary into a product of 2×2 subunitaries (which can for example be realized by beam splitters and phase shifters in linear optics) is well established, we show how for any m>2 this decomposition can be generalized into a product of m×m subunitaries (which can then be realized by a more complex device acting on m modes). If the cost associated with building each m×m multimode device is less than constructing with m(m−1)/2 individual 2×2 devices, we show that the decomposition of large unitaries into m×m submatrices is more resource efficient and exhibits a higher tolerance to errors, than its 2×2 counterpart. This allows larger-scale unitaries to be constructed with lower errors, which is necessary for various tasks, not least boson sampling, the quantum Fourier transform, and quantum simulations.

Abstract: Lignin is a phenolic heteropolymer found in most terrestrial plants that contributes an essential role in plant growth, abiotic stress tolerance, and biotic stress resistance. Recent research in grass lignin biosynthesis has found differences compared to dicots such as Arabidopsis thaliana. For example, the prolific incorporation of hydroxycinnamic acids into grass secondary cell walls improve the structural integrity of vascular and structural elements via covalent crosslinking. Conversely, fundamental monolignol chemistry conserves the mechanisms of monolignol translocation and polymerization across the plant phylum. Emerging evidence suggests grass lignin compositions contribute to abiotic stress tolerance, and periods of biotic stress often alter cereal lignin compositions to hinder pathogenesis. This same recalcitrance also inhibits industrial valorization of plant biomass, making lignin alterations and reductions a prolific field of research. This review presents an update of grass lignin biosynthesis, translocation, and polymerization, highlights how lignified grass cell walls contribute to plant development and stress responses, and briefly addresses genetic engineering strategies that may benefit industrial applications.

Abstract: Haemonchus contortus is a parasitic haematophagous nematode that primarily affects small ruminants and causes significant economic loss to the global livestock industry. Treatment of haemonchosis typically relies on broad-spectrum anthelmintics, resistance to which is an important cause of treatment failure. Resistance to levamisole remains less widespread than to other major anthelmintic classes, prompting the need for more effective and accurate surveillance to maintain its efficacy. Loop-primer endonuclease cleavage loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LEC-LAMP) is a recently developed diagnostic method that facilitates multiplex target detection with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) specificity and portable onsite testing. In this study, we designed a new LEC-LAMP assay and applied it to detect the levamisole resistance marker S168T in H. contortus. We explored multiplexing probes for both the resistant S168T and the susceptible S168 alleles in a single-tube assay. We then included a generic probe to detect the acr-8 gene in the multiplex assay, which could facilitate the quantification of both resistance markers and overall genetic material from H. contortus in a single step. Our results showed promising application of these technologies, demonstrating a proof-of-concept assay which is amenable to detection of resistance alleles within the parasite population, with the potential for multiplex detection, and point-of-care application enabled by lateral flow end-point detection. Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a heterogenous autoimmune disease in which autoreactive lymphocytes attack the myelin sheath of the central nervous system. B lymphocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with MS contribute to inflammation and secrete oligoclonal immunoglobulins1,2. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been epidemiologically linked to MS, but its pathological role remains unclear3. Here we demonstrate high-affinity molecular mimicry between the EBV transcription factor EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) and the central nervous system protein glial cell adhesion molecule (GlialCAM) and provide structural and in vivo functional evidence for its relevance. A cross-reactive CSF-derived antibody was initially identified by single-cell sequencing of the paired-chain B cell repertoire of MS blood and CSF, followed by protein microarray-based testing of recombinantly expressed CSF-derived antibodies against MS-associated viruses. Sequence analysis, affinity measurements and the crystal structure of the EBNA1-peptide epitope in complex with the autoreactive Fab fragment enabled tracking of the development of the naive EBNA1-restricted antibody to a mature EBNA1-GlialCAM cross-reactive antibody. Molecular mimicry is facilitated by a post-translational modification of GlialCAM. EBNA1 immunization exacerbates disease in a mouse model of MS, and anti-EBNA1 and anti-GlialCAM antibodies are prevalent in patients with MS. Our results provide a mechanistic link for the association between MS and EBV and could guide the development of new MS therapies.

Abstract: Background: In Canada, more than 2 million people live with osteoporosis, a disease that increases the risk for fractures, which result in excess mortality and morbidity, decreased quality of life and loss of autonomy. This guideline update is intended to assist Canadian health care professionals in the delivery of care to optimize skeletal health and prevent fractures in postmenopausal females and in males aged 50 years and older. Methods: This guideline is an update of the 2010 Osteoporosis Canada clinical practice guideline on the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in Canada. We followed the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework and quality assurance as per Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) quality and reporting standards. Primary care physicians and patient partners were represented at all levels of the guideline committees and groups, and participated throughout the entire process to ensure relevance to target users. The process for managing competing interests was developed before and continued throughout the guideline development, informed by the Guideline International Network principles. We considered benefits and harms, patient values and preferences, resources, equity, acceptability and feasibility when developing recommendations; the strength of each recommendation was assigned according to the GRADE framework. Recommendations: The 25 recommendations and 10 good practice statements are grouped under the sections of exercise, nutrition, fracture risk assessment and treatment initiation, pharmacologic interventions, duration and sequence of therapy, and monitoring. The management of osteoporosis should be guided by the patient's risk of fracture, based on clinical assessment and using a validated fracture risk assessment tool. Exercise, nutrition and pharmacotherapy are key elements of the management strategy for fracture prevention and should be individualized. Interpretation: The aim of this guideline is to empower health care professionals and patients to have meaningful discussions on the importance of skeletal health and fracture risk throughout older adulthood. Abstract: ABSTRACTThis article examines the absence of a profession-wide response for facilitating the transition of transnational social workers (TSWs) into the host country. TSWs work with various racial, ethnic, and cultural groups and often in unfamiliar socio-political, policy and practice contexts. A qualitative study was undertaken in New Zealand, which involved six focus groups, three with managers of TSWs and three with TSWs themselves and a face-to-face semi-structured interview with a manager who was also a TSW. Coding and analysis of data were informed by critical realism (CR). We found that TSWs’ transitions are framed within an employer-employee relationship in the absence of a profession-wide response and TSWs encounter structural barriers in their transition. A suggestion has been made that the profession’s leadership acknowledge responsibility that attends to the transitional space and an emotional concern about the wellbeing of TSWs. The transnational nature of the profession demands greater accountability regarding inclusion, sustainability, safety and discrimination. It can positively impact on the overall wellbeing of TSWs and the client groups they serve.

Abstract: Objective: Implantation of an appropriately sized donor heart is critical for optimal outcomes after heart transplantation. Although predicted heart mass has recently gained consideration, there remains a need for improved granularity in size matching, particularly among small donor hearts. We sought to determine if indexed donor cardiac output is a sensitive metric to assess the adequacy of a donor heart for a given recipient. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed (2003-2021) in isolated orthotopic heart transplant recipients from the United Network for Organ Sharing database. Donor cardiac output was divided by recipient body surface area to compute cardiac index (donor cardiac index). Predicted heart mass ratio was computed as donor/recipient predicted heart mass. The primary outcome was mortality 1 year after transplant. Results: Among transplant recipients, median donor cardiac output was 7.3 (5.8-9.0) liters per minute and donor cardiac index was 3.7 (3.0-4.6) liters per minute/m2. Predicted heart mass ratio was 1.01 (0.91-1.13). After multivariable adjustment, higher donor cardiac index was associated with lower 1-year mortality risk (odds ratio, 0.92, P = .042).
