Although the Capability Approach (CA) has been applied in research about children, the extent of this is unclear. Developing knowledge about the CA applied to childhood is important to facilitate support that may benefit children's well-being. To identify and synthesise the literature on this topic, we used a scoping review methodology with the guiding questions: How has the CA been used in research with children and their social contexts? Which data generating strategies have been used in this research? Searches conducted in June 2018 yielded 6773 records. Seventy-one studies met our inclusion criteria. While the CA was initially described in 1979, most studies were published from 2011 onwards. The CA was used most often in education research, with few studies in health research. The majority of studies used qualitative and/or participatory approaches. Children's perspectives were included in the majority of studies, but only a fifth were with young children (<7 years). Researchers used the CA as a theoretical framework, and to generate and interpret data. Two knowledge gaps should be considered in developing future research: applying the CA to the field of children's health, especially mental health; meaningfully engaging children of all ages in research processes, to promote children's agency. With increased suicide rates among youth during recent decades, the K–12 educational community still lacks a comprehensive model for suicide prevention that is tailorable for school systems. With this article, we present the Research-Informed Adaptable Model for the Prevention of Suicide in Schools (RAMPSS). A multitiered system of support, RAMPSS includes (a) all four major components of the American School Counselor Association National Model and (b) options for research-based responsive services at each tier level. Background: Longitudinal research among Iranian adolescent smoking is limited. The current study aimed to investigate (1) the first smoking experience (FSE) and future smoking behaviors of adolescents with different parental risk factors and (2) the association between age of the FSE and future smoking behaviors over a 12-year follow-up. Method: Based on Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) database, 1487 adolescents (12–18 years) with complete baseline parental data were recruited. Using two-step cluster analysis, families were classified as either high or low risk; these were based on parental risk factors including age, education, employment, and smoking status. Participants were examined four times in 12 years and their data were used for survival analysis. After exclusion of 24 cases who were smokers at baseline, Cox proportional hazard modeling was used to evaluate the effect of parental clusters on the FSE in 1463 nonsmoking adolescents who completed all prospective follow-ups. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the effect of the age of FSE on future smoking behaviors. Results: The mean age of adolescents was 14.63 ± 2.07 years at baseline. Adolescents in the high-risk cluster group were 49% more likely to try smoking for their first time, and 55% more likely to smoke in the future. Compared with girls, boys had 83% higher chance of trying their first cigarette. Moreover, 1-year delay in the FSE resulted in 25% reduction in the probability of smoking in the future. Conclusion: The findings show that compared with adolescents living in low-risk families, teenagers living in high-risk families are at greater risk of smoking at an earlier age; therefore, this group could benefit from gender- and culture specific preventive interventions. Since April 2014, in Hesse (Germany), it has been possible to arrange an exclusion from all gaming halls. In addition, the Hessian Gaming Halls Act obligates operators to exclude individuals who show signs of addictive gambling behavior. The objective was firstly to quantitatively analyze the administrative data set of all excluded individuals (N = 12,253). Secondly, the compliance of staff in implementing various gambler protection measures was examined. Test players visited 64 of the 750 gaming hall sites in Hesse. The findings showed that third-party exclusion accounted for only 1% of all exclusions. Checks on on-site gambler protection revealed that in 16% of all attempts of access by test players and observers, no entry checks were conducted; in 28% of the gaming halls, they were able to play despite being excluded. Furthermore, staff reacted with appropriate interventions to signs of problematic gambling behavior in 7% of cases. The low level of compliance can be explained by an inherent conflict between economic interests and an adequate protection of gamblers. Measures for improvement should include the set up of a centralized, cross-sector exclusion system, a more closely monitoring of protection measures, and the introduction of a personalized gambler identity card. This preliminary study explores the perspectives of at-risk youths from different cultural backgrounds on their well-being. We propose that youths' "well-being awareness" – i.e. what sources of well-being adolescents spontaneously become aware of when they are asked about – is strongly related to their socio-cultural context, their life experiences, and the time when they reflect about it. This study focused on the meaning of well-being sources, which were constructed by youths from different cultural backgrounds who faced different traumatic life experiences. We developed and applied a theoretical framework to understand youths' well-being awareness. Focus group discussions were analyzed of 48 male youths aged 12–18 years. They either faced the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 (11 boys from South India), or severe intra-familial conflicts (17 European boys), or were unaccompanied minor refugees (20 boys of Asian and African origin). Youths were asked what makes them happy and sad and about their coping strategies, only followed by questions for clarification. First, the data were analyzed inductively based on grounded theory. Second, the gained well-being descriptions were deductively allocated to the most basic elements of human well-being according to White (2008): material, subjective and relational dimension. Through this allocation process the influence of the socio-cultural context (place), life-experience, and time on the meaning of well-being of each youth group became clear. Well-being should be viewed as a process: on the one hand youths conceptions of well-being are deeply rooted in their culture of origin, on the other hand the importance of well-being and its indicators change depending on youths' traumatic experience and the time of asking about it. Purpose: Suicidal behavior, defined as non-fatal suicidal thoughts and behaviors that include having suicide ideation, plan, and attempts, is a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents globally. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of and the factors associated with suicidal behavior among school-going adolescents in Bangladesh. Methods: This study utilized data from the 2014 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), Bangladesh. A sample of (n = 2989) school-going adolescents aged 11–18 years was selected for this study. Risk factors of suicidal behavior were identified using a generalized estimating equation-modified Poison regression approach. Results: The age-adjusted prevalence of suicidal behavior among adolescents in Bangladesh was 11.7%. The result indicated that individual psychosocial factors such as loneliness [adjusted risk ratio (ARR) 1.36; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–1.81], anxiety (ARR 2.01; 95% CI 1.43–2.81), being bullied (ARR 1.88; 95% CI 1.51–2.33), and having no close friends (ARR 2.30; 95% CI 1.77–2.97) were associated with increased likelihood of suicidal behavior. Health-risk behaviors such as ever having sexual intercourse, alcohol and drug abuse, and social–environmental factors, such as rare parental homework check, and lack of peer support were found to be positively associated with adolescents' suicidal behavior. Additionally, a dose–response relationship is observed between the experience of multiple adverse psychosocial factors and suicidal behavior. Conclusion: Suicidal behavior is prevalent among school-going adolescents in Bangladesh. This study underscores the importance of early screening and interventions targeted to adolescents at risk, which might reduce the suicide rate among this population in Bangladesh. Peer victimization is a major stressor adolescents often face in the school environment, and has been linked to depression and suicidal risk. This study analyzed the associations between three behavioral coping strategies (avoidance, seeking social support from adults/peers, and retaliation) and depression and suicidal ideation. Participants included 4,254 victimized students who were part of the Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE) study that compared three school-based prevention interventions and collected information on health risk behaviors in adolescents from 11 European countries. Results showed behavioral avoidance to be associated with an increase in levels of depression, as compared to the other coping strategies (adult social support, peer social support, retaliation). Seeking social support from adults was associated with lower depression and suicidal ideation rates. A more than 25% increase in suicidal ideation was associated with behavioral avoidance, compared to seeking social support from adults. By contrast, retaliation to peer victimization was not found to be associated with increased depression or suicidal ideation. The findings support the Coping Deficit model and may suggest that abstaining by doing nothing when victimized can be associated with certain adverse emotional outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to investigate how psychosocial problems in childhood and adolescence associate with an unhealthy health behavior pattern among adolescents in Northern Finland. The study population consisted of 4350 participants, drawn from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 Study. Health behavior patterns were assessed in adolescence and psychosocial problems in childhood and adolescence. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the associations. Several psychosocial problems predicted greater likelihood of engaging in unhealthy health behavior pattern. Externalizing problems in childhood predicted greater likelihood of engaging in unhealthy behavior patterns for girls. For both genders, externalizing problems and inattention in adolescence were associated with unhealthy health behavior patterns. Boys and girls with externalizing problems both in childhood and adolescence had an increased risk of unhealthy patterns. Psychosocial problems contribute to unhealthy lifestyles and should therefore be acknowledged when designing and targeting health promotion strategies aimed at adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To identify clusters of health behaviours among Finnish adolescents and examine whether these clusters are associated with body mass index (BMI). Methods: The data, drawn from the prospective population‐based Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986, comprised a total of 7182 adolescents who replied to a follow‐up postal questionnaire at the age 15 to 16. The adolescents were asked about multiple health behaviours, such as physical activity, screen time, cigarette smoking, alcohol use and diet. Adolescents who answered the questions concerning all of these variables were included in the study, yielding a final sample of 4305 subjects. K‐means cluster analysis was performed to identify group of adolescents with similar health behaviours. Chi‐squared tests were performed to analyse the association between the clusters and BMI. Results: Two clusters – Healthy Lifestyle and Unhealthy Lifestyle – were identified for both genders. The values of all the studied variables differed significantly between the clusters identified for both boys and girls. No significant relationship between the identified clusters and BMI was found for either boys or girls. Conclusions: It is important to consider multiple lifestyle‐related behaviours and trying to identify groups that present probability for developing lifestyle diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Despite growing international interest in the area of violence and suicidal ideation among school-going adolescents, epidemiological data are scant in Portugal. The objective of this study was to measure the prevalence of suicidal ideation among Portuguese adolescents from 7th to 12th grade and to estimate the association of violence exposure with suicidal ideation. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2 602 adolescents enrolled in public schools in Porto, Portugal. Sampling was performed in four school groups consisting of seven schools, during the 2014/2015 academic year. Results: The results revealed that 11.4% of Portuguese school-going adolescents reported suicidal thoughts during the past 12 months. Moreover, adolescents who had been involved in physical fighting were two times more likely to have suicidal thoughts. These odds substantially increased when bullying and cyberbullying victimisation were included. Conclusion: Effective interventions with multidisciplinary efforts involving parents, school teachers, principals, and mental health professionals, should be integrated into school-based programmes to improve adolescents' mental health and strengthen them against suicidal ideation. Aims: The factors associated with suicidal ideation among adolescents have been extensively characterised, but the mechanisms underlying the complexities of the relationship between experiences of childhood trauma and suicidal ideation have been less studied. This study examined the direct effect of childhood trauma on suicidal ideation on the one hand and whether school bullying victimisation and Internet addiction mediate the association between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation on the other hand. Methods: This school-based mental health survey was carried out in Qinghai Province in Northwest China in December 2019. We employed standardised questionnaires to collect sociodemographic and target mental health outcomes. Hierarchical multiple logistic regression and structural equation modelling were performed for the data analyses. Results: This study included 5864 university students. The prevalence of lifetime suicidal ideation and Internet addiction were 34.7% and 21.4%, respectively. Overall, 16.4% and 11.4% of participants reported experiences of childhood trauma and school bullying victimisation, respectively. There were direct effects of childhood trauma, school bullying victimisation and Internet addiction on suicidal ideation. The total effect of childhood trauma on suicidal ideation was 0.201 (p < 0.001). School bullying victimisation and Internet addiction mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation. Internet addiction played a mediating role between school bullying and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Childhood trauma had both direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation; these effects were mediated by school bullying victimisation and Internet addiction in Chinese university students. Elucidating these relationships will therefore be useful in developing and implementing more targeted interventions and strategies to improve the mental well-being of Chinese university students. Multiple jurisdictions legislate responsible gambling staff training for providers of land-based gambling products or include it within the industry codes of conduct. Current training programs appear to focus on basic compliance with regulatory requirements. Although programs contain problem gambling information, staff are required to respond only when approached by individuals seeking assistance. A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines and preregistration protocols was undertaken to evaluate existing evidence of staff training program effectiveness and to assess the quality of the selected studies. 1,306 articles were identifiedbased gambling venues characterized by face-to-face contact with gambling customers. Results showed several methodological weaknesses in the studies which precluded any substantive conclusions regarding the effectiveness of training programs in reducing gambling-related fell short in providing practical skills necessary to deal with difficult situations. Objective. To evaluate the association between oral health problems and sociodemographic factors with the intention to quit smoking and join the tobacco cessation program among schoolchildren. Materials and Methods. This cross-sectional study included a sample of 10–12 grade male students from public high schools in different cities of the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Schoolchildren responded to a pilot-tested questionnaire about self-reported oral health problems and the intention to quit smoking. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results. Out of 587 schoolchildren, 199 were smokers with a smoking prevalence of 33.9%. Significantly higher proportions of smokers than nonsmokers had tooth sensitivity (P = 0.029) and dryness of the mouth (P = 0.001). Most smokers (75.9%) had a family history of smoking, and 51.8% started smoking within the last two years. Tooth sensitivity (56.3%), dental cavities (52.8%), and dental pain (44.7%) were highly prevalent among smokers. About one-third of smokers expressed their intention to quit smoking (38.2%) and join a smoking cessation program (33.7%). Tooth sensitivity (OR = 3.7, P = 0.004) and dental pain (OR = 2.84, P = 0.014) were significantly associated with quitting smoking. In addition, smokers with tooth sensitivity (OR = 3.22, P = 0.007) had higher odds of joining a smoking cessation program than those without tooth sensitivity. The smokers who started smoking within the last two years (OR = 3.97, P = 0.002) were more likely to quit smoking than those who initiated smoking for more than two years. Conclusion. Oral health problems were highly prevalent among smokers. Tooth sensitivity was significantly associated with quitting smoking and joining a cessation program in children. Cigarette smoking is common among adolescent psychiatric patients and often precedes the initiation of substance and illicit drug use. This study investigates the association of nicotine dependence (ND), assessed already in adolescence, to subsequent drug crime offenses committed up to young adulthood. The special focus was to examine the dose-response between adolescent ND and later drug-crime offenses. The initial data consist of former adolescent psychiatric inpatients treated in psychiatric inpatient care between the ages 13–17 years. Adolescent DSM-IV based psychiatric disorders were based on the semi-structural diagnostic K-SADS-PL interview. ND in adolescence was measured using the modified Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire for children and adolescents. Follow-up data on crimes of the study subjects from 15 years of age to early adulthood was obtained from the nationwide Legal Register Center of Finland. A total of 60 (11.8%) drug crime offenders were identified from the initial study population. The likelihood for drug crime offending was statistically significantly increased among those with moderate to severe ND already in adolescence. The higher level of adolescent ND indicated greater number of drug offenses. The common characteristics of drug crime offenders were male gender, out-of-home placement background, exposure to parental divorce and a diagnosis for affective, conduct and substance-use disorder in adolescence. Our study finding, that higher level of ND in adolescence predicts greater number of drug crime offenses up to young adulthood, warrants identification of adolescent smokers at-risk of later drug-related crimes. Background: Suicidality remains disproportionately prevalent among sexual minority youth, necessitating novel methods of understanding suicide risk in this population. Victimization and depression are especially salient suicide risk factors. Aims: We aimed to test if victimization and depression were associated with suicidality at each step of a suicide cascade: Ideation, planning, and suicide attempts. Method: In sample of sexual minorities from the 2015 and 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we tested nine measures of victimization and depression associated with three outcomes in succession: Suicidal ideation among the full sample (n = 3357), suicide planning among those with ideation (n = 1475), and suicide attempts among those who planned suicide (n = 1073). Results: Depression was associated with suicidal ideation (aPR = 3.93, 95% CI 3.36–4.60), planning (aPR = 1.38, 95% CI 1.12–1.69), and attempts (aPR = 1.78, 95% CI 1.32–2.41) in successive subsamples. Victimization measures had different associations with suicidality at each successive stage, with the strongest associations observed with suicidal ideation in the general sample and suicide attempts among those who planned suicide. Conclusions: This may have implications for anti-victimization intervention effectiveness at each stage of suicidality. Staff training in responsible gambling forms an integral component of industry measures designed to respond to and minimize gambling-related harms. Research suggests that venue staff members have the capacity to identify behavioral indicators of problem gambling among patrons, but often are reluctant or fail to respond to patrons unless directly approached for assistance. Understanding the barriers preventing staff from proactively intervening with identified patrons is necessary if a positive shift toward greater levels of assistance for at-risk individuals is to be achieved. A series of focus groups were conducted with management and floor staff (N = 20) from a large New South Wales registered club venue to better understand their experiences and attitudes towards existing responsible gambling training programs. Qualitative phenomenological data were analyzed using inductive thematic analyses and resulted in the identification of three primary domains: ability to identify harmful gambling behaviors; perceived challenges and barriers to intervention; and potential improvements to current programs. Responses were consistent with the literature in demonstrating staff abilities to identify behavioral indicators, but importantly revealed a lack of certainty and understanding in relation to their specific roles, potential legal consequences and implications for employment by taking the initiative to proactively intervene. Recommended improvements to strengthen the effectiveness of programs included the implementation of well-defined protocols setting out role expectations and procedures for floor staff to follow, and importantly, a fundamental shift in middle and senior management culture to one that actively supports and positively acknowledges staff-customer interactions designed to assist problem gamblers. Introduction: Even adolescents have early signs of periodontitis, an infectious inflammatory disease. Young patients at risk must be identified for the preventive interventions and treatment at enough early. Aim: To find out whether participants at risk for subclinical periodontitis could be identified using an active Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) chairside mouth rinse test, and to study if health behaviour and oral health are linked to the test result in Finnish adolescents. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out at the Hämeenlinna Health Center in South Finland in 2017-2018. Altogether 125 participants gave their consent to the study. Adolescents (14-15-year-old) were randomly divided into the control group (n=55) and the test group (n=70). All participants of oral health was examined, and they filled a questionnaire. The aMMP-8 chairside mouth rinse test was performed for the test group. Test positives were followed four monthly for a year. Data analysis was performed by IBM SPSS Statistics Version 25 by different statistical tests, including the Mann Whitney U test, the Friedman's test, the Dunn-Bonferroni test and the Wilcoxon test. Results: Visible Plaque Index Percentage (VPI%) was significantly higher in test positives (p=0.005). Bleeding On Probing Percentage (BOP%) reached almost statistically significant difference (p=0.052). Periodontal treatment intervention decreased aMMP-8 levels assessed by a change in the test stick result from positive (+) to negative (-) during follow-up time. Conclusion: The aMMP-8 chairside mouth rinse test identified and alarmed adolescents with poor oral hygiene at risk for subclinical periodontitis without detectable and visible manifestations of the illness, such as deepened periodontal pockets. The present study examined the concurrent and longitudinal influences of paternal and maternal factors on the levels of and changes in substance use among early adolescents. Based on three waves of data collected from 2,669 junior high school Chinese students in Hong Kong, we found that fathers' and mothers' behavioral control and the quality of parent-adolescent relationship were negative predictors of the initial levels of substance use. Higher levels of maternal behavioral control and quality of mother-adolescent relationship predicted a slower rate of increase in adolescent substance use. Parental psychological control was not a significant predictor of the growth rate of adolescent substance use. While fathers' behavioral control and mother-adolescent relationship were stable concurrent predictors, the mother-adolescent relationship was a robust longitudinal predictor of adolescent substance use. Purpose of Review: For decades, researchers have been examining the correlates, outcomes, and contexts related to sexual debut. Early inquiries employed mostly retrospective methods with convenience samples, focusing on the negative correlates of early sexual debut. However, recent research has been more nuanced, using longitudinal methods with nationally representative samples around the globe, accounting for relevant covariates, and examining the correlates of early, later, and nonexistent sexual debut. In this review, we discuss the significance of the timing and context of sexual debut for women's sexual lives, focusing especially on the new conceptualizations and insights gained from research in the past five years. Findings: Although early sexual debut relative to one's peers typically has been considered problematic in terms of later sexual health and psychological well-being, more recent research has demonstrated that other factors, including individual characteristics and family and peer influences, are co-occurring risk factors that may better explain these significant relationships. More recent research has demonstrated that sexual competence at debut (i.e., maturity and preparedness) has greater predictive utility of later sexual health and wellness, including positive affect and appraisals of sexual desirability. Summary and Future Directions: From both a sociocultural and a methodological perspective, the framing of sexual debut has changed considerably in the past few decades. Accordingly, it is time to reconsider the framing of sexual debut to account for the wide range of sexual activities and relationship configurations that exist. Moreover, the study of sexual debut needs to include the individual, sociocultural, and contextual factors that might influence the way that the event is interpreted in an individual's lifelong sexual trajectory. The present study investigated whether bullying victimization and parental involvement were associated with internalizing distress, suicidal thoughts and behavior, and substance use in Jamaican adolescents as well as whether parental involvement moderated the relation between bullying victimization and measures of psychological and behavioral distress. Analyses were based on a sample of 1,595 adolescents who were participating in the 2010 Global School-Based Student Health Survey. Data were collected using a complex survey design. Regression models were estimated using weighted data, which allowed us to draw conclusions about the population of Jamaican adolescents. Consistent with findings from international studies, bullying victimization was uniquely and positively associated with feelings of loneliness, sleep difficulties due to worry, smoking frequency, and suicidality for both male and female adolescents as well as with alcohol use frequency for female adolescents. Our pattern of findings also suggested that parental involvement is a more robust correlate of psychological and behavioral adjustment for female adolescents. Female adolescents who reported higher levels of parental involvement were less lonely and less likely to consider or plan suicide. For boys, parental involvement was only negatively related to loneliness. Finally, we found evidence that parental involvement moderated the relation between bullying victimization and cigarette use and considering suicide, although the latter finding was at the level of a nonsignificant trend. Our findings suggest parental involvement may attenuate the relation between bullying victimization and considering suicide but may strengthen the relation between bullying victimization and smoking. We discuss our findings in the context of Jamaican cultural socialization and with an appreciation for the social challenges faced by adolescents experiencing bullying victimization. We measure and predict states of Activation and Happiness using a body sensing application connected to smartwatches. Through the sensors of commercially available smartwatches we collect individual mood states and correlate them with body sensing data such as acceleration, heart rate, light level data, and location, through the GPS sensor built into the smartphone connected to the smartwatch. We polled users on the smartwatch for seven weeks four times per day asking for their mood state. We found that both Happiness and Activation are negatively correlated with heart beats and with the levels of light. People tend to be happier when they are moving more intensely and are feeling less activated during weekends. We also found that people with a lower Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and higher Agreeableness tend to be happy more frequently. In addition, more Activation can be predicted by lower Openness to experience and higher Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Lastly, we find that tracking people’s geographical coordinates might play an important role in predicting Happiness and Activation. The methodology we propose is a first step towards building an automated mood tracking system, to be used for better teamwork and in combination with social network analysis studies. Abstract: Chiroptical effects arising in mirror‐symmetric geometrically achiral resonant heterostructures are investigated. It is shown that coalescence of extrinsic chirality, heterogeneous morphology, and substrate‐induced break of symmetry leads to pronounced circular dichroism and circular birefringence. The physics of the involved phenomena is elucidated by studying spin‐splitting in scattering and hybridized dipolar modes of a heterodimer made of gold and silicon nanoparticles of the same shape and size. The work sheds new light on the optical properties of heterogeneous nanostructures and paves the way for designing polarization‐controlled tunable heterogeneous optical elements. Personalized medicine (PM) aims to establish a new approach in clinical decision-making, based upon a patient's individual profile in order to tailor treatment to each patient's characteristics. Although this has become a focus of the discussion also in the psychiatric field, with evidence of its high potential coming from several proof-of-concept studies, nearly no tools have been developed by now that are ready to be applied in clinical practice. In this paper, we discuss recent technological advances that can make a shift toward a clinical application of the PM paradigm. We focus specifically on those technologies that allow both the collection of massive as much as real-time data, i.e., electronic medical records and smart wearable devices, and to achieve relevant predictions using these data, i.e. the application of machine learning techniques. The Youth Aware of Mental health (YAM) experience: Youth stand at the core of much mental health promotion, yet little is written about their experiences of such efforts. We aimed to take this on by interviewing youth after they participated in Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM), a universal mental health promotion program. YAM has a non-anticipatory methodology that provides youth with a safe space for reflection, role-play, and discussion. Addressing everyday mental health, YAM invites the experiences and issues relevant to the youth present to influence the program in a slightly different direction every time. The YAM instructor guides the participants but does not present the youth with given formulas on how to solve their problems. Like any mental health promotion, YAM appeals to some more than others in its intended audience and individuals engage with the program in many different ways. We set out to learn more about these experiences. Conversations about mental health: Thirty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15–17 year olds in Estonia, Italy, Romania and Spain. In these interviews, the researchers made an effort to discuss mental health in terms relevant to youth. Still, wide-ranging levels of motivation, ease with engaging in dialogue with mental health professionals, and comfort with the format and content of YAM were detected. The youth were clustered in five different groups relating to their positioning vis-à-vis the researcher during the interview. The following evocative labels were used: “interested”, “foot in the door”, “respect for authority”, “careful”, and “not my topic”. Corresponding labels were devised for their YAM experience: “engaged”, “initially hesitant”, “cautious”, “eager to please”, or “disengaged”. We also observed that the researchers brought their own expectations and employed a variety of approaches that led to anticipating answers, stating the obvious, or getting along better with some of the youth. These modes of interaction were categorized under: “favoritism”, “familiarity”, “frustration”, “out of sync”, and “insecurity”. Similar power dynamics likely transpire in other encounters between youth and researchers, including interventions such as YAM. Youth and mental health professionals: Noticing the dynamics at play: As mental health professionals, we need to be aware of the professional habits and biases that sometimes obstruct us in understanding the experiences of youth. By initiating dialogue and listening closely to youth we can find a way to those experiences. Qualitative research can help bring the underlying interplay between mental health professionals and youth to the surface while also orienting the conversation towards topics that matter to youth. Some youth are more interested or feel more at ease in speaking openly with mental health professionals, while others find such exchanges less appealing or almost intolerable. Future mental health promotion initiatives would benefit from involving youth in the design of interventions to create an inclusive atmosphere and engage with topics that appeal to youth with diverse experiences of mental health. Influential recent scholarship assumes that authoritarian rulers act as perfect agents of economic elites, foreclosing the possibility that economic elites may at times prefer democracy absent a popular threat from below. Motivated by a puzzling set of democratic transitions, we relax this assumption and examine how elite uncertainty about dictatorship-a novel and generalizable causal mechanism impacting democratization-can induce elite support for democracy. We construct a noisy signaling model in which a potential autocrat attempts to convince economic elites that he will be a faithful partner should elites install him in power. The model generates clear predictions about how two major types of elite uncertainty-uncertainty in a potential autocratic successor's policies produced by variance in the pool of would-be dictator types, and uncertainty in the truthfulness of policy promises made by potential autocratic successors-impact the likelihood of elite-driven democratization. Background: The age of adolescents' sexual initiation is decreasing worldwide. Early sexual initiation has been reported to affect social, physical, and mental health, but little is known about the relationship between the timing of sexual initiation and suicidal ideation., Purpose: This study was designed to identify the association between the timing of sexual initiation and suicidal ideation by gender., Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from South Korea's Youth Health Behavior Online Survey for 2016. Data on first- to 12th-grade students (N = 10,810) were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, and hierarchical logistic regression., Results: The results revealed a significant relationship between early sexual initiation and suicidal ideation among both boys and girls. This relationship remained significant after controlling for confounding variables that are known to affect suicidal ideation, including perceived stress, hopelessness, school grades, and sociodemographic characteristics. The risk of suicidal ideation was higher among students who first experienced sex in earlier grades (before the ninth grade) and was also higher in girls than in boys., Conclusions/implications for Practice: Health providers should be aware of the potentially higher risk of suicidal behavior among adolescents after early sexual initiation. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and compare the prediction model for suicide attempts by Korean adolescents using logistic regression and decision tree analysis., Methods: This study utilized secondary data drawn from the 2019 Youth Health Risk Behavior web-based survey. A total of 20 items were selected as the explanatory variables (5 of sociodemographic characteristics, 10 of health-related behaviors, and 5 of psychosocial characteristics). For data analysis, descriptive statistics and logistic regression with complex samples and decision tree analysis were performed using IBM SPSS ver. 25.0 and Stata ver. 16.0., Results: A total of 1,731 participants (3.0%) out of 57,303 responded that they had attempted suicide. The most significant predictors of suicide attempts as determined using the logistic regression model were experience of sadness and hopelessness, substance abuse, and violent victimization. Girls who have experience of sadness and hopelessness, and experience of substance abuse have been identified as the most vulnerable group in suicide attempts in the decision tree model., Conclusion: Experiences of sadness and hopelessness, experiences of substance abuse, and experiences of violent victimization are the common major predictors of suicide attempts in both logistic regression and decision tree models, and the predict rates of both models were similar. Depression contributes greatly to global disability and is a leading cause of suicide. It has multiple etiologies and therefore response to treatment can vary significantly. By applying the concepts of personalized medicine, precision psychiatry attempts to optimize psychiatric patient care by better predicting which individuals will develop an illness, by giving a more accurate biologically based diagnosis, and by utilizing more effective treatments based on an individual's biological characteristics (biomarkers). In this chapter, we discuss the basic principles underlying the role of biomarkers in psychiatric pathology and then explore multiple biomarkers that are specific to depression. These include endophenotypes, gene variants/polymorphisms, epigenetic factors such as methylation, biochemical measures, circadian rhythm dysregulation, and neuroimaging findings. We also examine the role of early childhood trauma in the development of, and treatment response to, depression. In addition, we review how new developments in technology may play a greater role in the determination of new biomarkers for depression.

One of the most important challenges of volunteered geographic information (VGI) is the quality assessment. Existing methods of VGI quality assessment, either assess the quality by comparing a reference map with the VGI map or deriving the quality from the metadata. The first approach does not work for a real-time scenario and the latter delivers approximate values of the quality. Internet of Things (IoT) networks provide real-time observations for environment monitoring. Moreover, they publish more precise information than VGI. This paper introduces a method to assess the quality of VGI in real-time using IoT observations. The proposed method filters sensor observation outliers in the first step. Then it matches sensors and volunteers' relationships in terms of location, time, and measurement type similarity using a hypergraph model. Then the quality of matched data is assessed by calculating positional and attribute accuracy. To evaluate the method, VGI data of the water level and quality in Tarashk–Bakhtegan–Maharlou water basin is studied. A VGI quality map of the data is assessed by a referenced authoritative map. The output of this step is a VGI quality map, which was used as a reference to check the proposed method quality. Then this reference VGI quality map and the proposed method VGI quality map are compared to assess positional and attribute accuracy. Results demonstrated that 76% of the method results have less than 20 m positional error (i.e., difference with the reference VGI quality map). Additionally, more than 92% of the proposed method VGI data have higher than 90% attribute accuracy in terms of similarity with the reference VGI quality map. (1) Background: Psychological problems of adolescents have become a global health and safety concern. Empirical evidence has shown that adolescents experience diverse mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, and emotional disorders). However, research on anxiety-induced sleep disturbance among in-school adolescents has received less attention, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study's central focus was to examine factors associated with t anxiety-induced sleep disturbance among in-school adolescents in Ghana. (2) Methods: Analysis was performed using the 2012 Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS). A sample of 1342 in-school adolescents was included in the analysis. The outcome variable was anxiety-induced sleep disturbance reported during the past 12 months. Frequencies, percentages, chi-square, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results from the multivariable logistic regression analysis were presented as crude and adjusted odds ratios at 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and with a statistical significance declared at p < 0.05. (3) Results: Adolescents who went hungry were more likely to report anxiety-induced sleep disturbance compared to their counterparts who did not report hunger (aOR = 1.68, CI = 1.10, 2.57). The odds of anxiety-induced sleep disturbance were higher among adolescents who felt lonely compared to those that never felt lonely (aOR = 2.82, CI = 1.98, 4.01). Adolescents who had sustained injury were more likely to have anxiety-induced sleep disturbance (aOR = 1.49, CI = 1.03, 2.14) compared to those who had no injury. Compared to adolescents who never had suicidal ideations, those who reported experiencing suicidal ideations had higher odds of anxiety-induced sleep disturbance (aOR = 1.68, CI = 1.05, 2.71). (4) Conclusions: Anxiety-induced sleep disturbance among in-school adolescents were significantly influenced by the psychosocial determinants such as hunger, loneliness, injury, and suicidal ideation in this study. The findings can help design appropriate interventions through effective strategies (e.g., early school-based screening, cognitive-behavioral therapy, face-face counseling services) to reduce psychosocial problems among in-school adolescents in Ghana. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and correlates of sexual risk behaviors among adolescents in the Caribbean. Nationally representative cross-sectional data were analyzed from 9143 adolescents (15 years = median age) that took part in the 2016 Dominican Republic, 2016 Suriname, 2017 Jamaica, and 2017 Trinidad and Tobago Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS). The results indicate that 41.4% of the students had ever had sex, ranging from 26.4% in Trinidad and Tobago to 48.1% in Jamaica. Among the sexually active, 58.8% had had ≥2 sexual partners; 58.6% had had an early sexual debut (≤14 years); 41.9% had not used birth control the last time they had sex; 28.4% had not used a condom the last time they had sex; and, of the whole sample, 31.9% had engaged in two or more (multiple) sexual risk behaviors, ranging from 16.5% in Trinidad and Tobago to 40.3% in Jamaica. In an adjusted logistic regression analysis, substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis), psychological distress, frequent soft drink intake, participation in physical fighting, school truancy, older age, and male sex were associated with single and/or multiple sexual risk behaviors. Collective coherent scattering at the surface of a plasmonic nanoparticle array is shown to induce tunable transparency windows at the localized plasmon band. Broadband phase measurements show that the enhanced transmission is accompanied by a large anomalous dispersion, which leads to a group delay as large as ∼8fs within only 40 nm thick sample. This effect occurs over a wide tunable spectral range of ∼200nm, and appears for two distinct counter‐propagating surface waves. The experimental observations are in good agreement with calculations based on coupled dipole approximation (CDA) and with finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) simulations. Dynamic manipulation of the spin of photons is important for many applications ranging from optical sensing to optical information processing. In the past, the study on controlling the spin of light has focused on chiral materials, three‐dimensional structures lacking any mirror symmetries. However, the complexity of fabrication of such structures has hindered their practical applications. In this work, the dynamic switching of optical chirality in two‐dimensional honeycomb photonic crystal—the so‐called photonic graphene is explored. In particular, optical spin–spin interaction mediated by the pseudospin states of the photonic graphene is proposed. A circularly polarized pumping beam can lift the degeneracy at the Dirac cones, leading to chiral responses for a probe beam incident along the direction of the Dirac points. Interestingly, the chirality is determined by the both the valley index and the spin of the pumping beam. The proposed nonlinear photonic graphene offers a new route to manipulate valley‐ and spin‐dependent phenomena in 2D photonic systems. Dynamically manipulating photon spin is central to various applications ranging from optical sensing to optical information processing. Herein, nonlinear optical spin‐spin interaction is demonstrated in a honeycomb dielectric photonic crystal—so‐called photonic graphene, which leads to a nonlinear optical chiral effect and opens the door to pseudospin‐mediated spin or valley‐selective photonic devices. Both emotional and social traits interact with genetic factors to influence smoking behavior. We previously established a socially acquired nicotine intravenous self-administration model where social learning of a nicotine-associated odor cue reversed conditioned flavor aversion and promoted nicotine intake. In this study, we first phenotyped ~800 adolescent heterogeneous stock rats in open field, novel object interaction, social interaction, elevated plus maze, and marble burying behaviors. These rats were then phenotyped on socially acquired nicotine self-administration. We found 243 significant correlations between different behavioral tests. Principal component regression analysis found that ~10-20% of the variance in nicotine-related measures, such as intake during the first or the last three fixed-ratio sessions, the progressive ratio session, and reinstatement behavior, can be explained by variations in behavioral traits. Factors corresponding to social behavior and anxiety were among the strongest predictors of nicotine intake and reinstatement of nicotine-seeking behavior. We also found many sex differences in behavioral measures. These data indicated that the genetic diversity of this population, in combination with social behaviour and anxiety, are significant contributors to the divergent nicotine self-administration behavior and indicated a high probability of discovering sex-specific genetic mechanisms for nicotine intake in future genome-wide association studies. Background: Cigarette smoking has decreased to a record low among youth across the United States, including in Virginia. Rates of alternative tobacco use, however, are rising and polytobacco use is common. A better understanding of the shifting use patterns and associated risk factors is important for informing tobacco prevention, cessation, and policy efforts.Methods: Weighted data from the 2013 Virginia Youth Survey were used. The sample was limited to 1168 youth who reported past 30-day tobacco use of ≥1 product (cigarettes, smokeless tobacco [smokeless], or cigars/little cigars/cigarillos [cigars]). Latent class analysis categorized individuals based on current tobacco use frequency/intensity. Multivariable multinomial logistic regressions compared classes on demographics, other tobacco-related factors, other substance use, and health/psychosocial factors.Results: The five-class model indicated the best fit with classes characterized as "Chippers" (28.0%; high probability of low-frequency/intensity cigarette use), "Moderate Poly-Users" (23.6%; low- to high-frequency/moderate intensity cigarette use; moderate probability smokeless/cigar use), "Cigar Users" (20.9%; no-low-probability cigarette/smokeless use; high-probability cigar use), "Smokeless Users" (17.3%; no-low-probability cigarette/cigar use; moderate-high-probability smokeless use), and "Heavy Poly-Users" (10.4%; daily/high-intensity cigarette use, moderate-high-probability smokeless/cigar use). Classes differed significantly by demographics and inconsistently by other tobacco-related factors. Heavy Poly-Users were more likely to engage in other substance use behaviors, report suicidal ideation, and report being bullied because of gender.Conclusions: Classes identified indicate that a large proportion of youth engage in polytobacco use and certain subgroups may be at greater risk for negative health consequences due to elevated psychosocial and behavioral risk factors.Implications: These findings suggest distinct patterns of current tobacco use, including a high proportion of youth engaging in polytobacco use. Heavy polytobacco use co-occurs with other health risk behaviors and may be attributed to psychosocial risk factors.
