Renewable resources are used to create useful, biologically sustainable materials. It has the potential to minimize waste while also challenging existing research and developments. Several researchers have concentrated their efforts on natural fiber composites. Natural fibers include plant, mineral, and animal fibers. In this project fish scales, a bio-waste, were used as a reinforcing agent in polyester/polystyrene for the fabrication of composite materials in the different weight fractions of 0, 6, 7, 9, and 11%, at a constant load of 1 N and temperature of 20 and 26°C. The hand layup technique was used to create the fabrication setup for composite materials. The creep behavior, modulus of elasticity, and stress were studied experimentally.

هدفت الدّراسة إلى تحديد أهم معوقات استخدام الطّائرات بدون طيّار في التّسويق للسياحة الثّقافيّة سواء كانت معوقات تمويلية أو قانونية أو تقنية أو بشرية. تمّ الاعتماد على المقاربة الاستنباطيّة كمنهجٍ عامٍ للتّفكير، وعلى المنهج الوصفيّ التّحليلي لتوصيف المفاهيم الخاصّة بالبحث، وتحليل البيانات الّتي جمعت بواسطة استبانة وزّعت على العاملين في مجال التّسويق في مديريتي السياحة والثّقافة في محافظة اللاذقية والبالغ عددهم 51 فرداً، ومن ثم تمّ الاعتماد على برنامج SPSS 20 الإحصائي كأداة لتحليل البيانات واختبار الفرضيات البحثية بالاعتماد على المتوسطات الحسابية واختبار One-Sample Test. توصلت الدّراسة إلى العديد من النّتائج كان من أهمّها ضعف النّشاط التّسويقي للسّياحة الثّقافيّة في المديريات محل الدّراسة بسبب عدم تبنى الإدارة العليا استراتيجيات وطرق حديثة للتّسويق، وعدم تدريب وتأهيل الكوادر البشريّة لمتابعة المستجدات التّسويقية، بالإضافة إلى عدم تشجيع الإدارة على تبني وتقديم برامج تسويقية جاذبة للسياحة الثّقافيّة. وكذلك وجود معوقات تمويلية متعددة تؤثر سلباً على إمكانية تبنى استخدام الطّائرات بدون طيّار كوسيلةٍ حديثةٍ ومتطورة للتّسويق للسياحة الثّقافيّة، وذلك بسبب عدم توفر الإمكانيات المالية اللازمة لتأمين المُعدات والمستلزمات من طائرات بدون طيّار، وأجهزة الإضاءة وكاميرات للتّصوير، وأجهزة حاسب وبرمجيات ضرورية لعملها.

تعتبر الخوارزميات الجينية genetic algorithm إحدى مجالات الذكاء اصطناعي Artificial Intelligence التي تستخدم عملية التطور ونظرية الانتقاء الطبيعي، ويتم استخدامها كأداة فعالة لحل مشاكل التحسين optimization problems. يعد التكامل بين بارامترات (GA) أمرًا حيويًا لنجاح البحث، تتضمن هذه البارامترات معدلات الطفرات mutation والتقاطع crossover وعدد السكان population والتي تعتبر قضايا مهمة في (GA)، كذلك فإن الاختيار الصحيح للعمليات الجينية هو أمر أساسي في فعالية الخوارزمية الجينية. يناقش هذا البحث بناء خوارزمية جينية تخضع لشروط مقيدة في توليد الحلول والعمليات الجينية اللاحقة، يتم من خلالها البحث في تحسين زمن التأخير للعربات التي تعبر التقاطعات المرورية "رباعية الأذرع" المنظمة بإشارات مرور ضمن المحافظات السورية، حيث تم استخدام الخوارزمية في التحكم وأمثلة توزيع الزمن الأخضر لدورة زمنية كاملة للتقاطع المروري على أذرع هذا التقاطع وذك بهدف لتحقيق أقل تأخير زمني ممكن للعربات التي تعبره. تم تمثيل الكروموسوم chromosome بخمس جينات genes أولها زمن دورة الإشارة الضوئية الكلي على التقاطع المروري أما الجينات الأربعة المتبقية فتمثل نسبة الزمن الأخضر من زمن الدورة لكل ذراع من أذرع التقاطع. ترتبط جينات الكروموسوم ببعضها ارتباطاً خطياً، يتم تقييم الكروموسومات عن طريق تابع لياقة fitness function والذي يحدد مدى صلاحيتها بالانتقال إلى الجيل التالي بالمقارنة مع الكروموسومات الأخرى. تم اختيار تابع اللياقة ليكون نموذج رياضي يعبر عن زمن التأخير الكلي على التقاطع [1]، حيث أن الكروموسوم المرتبط بالزمن الأقصر ضمن جيل يشكل الحل الأمثل ضمن هذا الجيل، تم دراسة تأثير حجم الجيل population size وتأثير العمليات الجينية (التزاوج، الطفرة) على عمل الخوارزمية الجينية في حل هذه المسألة للوصول إلى أقل زمن تأخير ممكن.

Abstract Members of numerous animal species show consistent inter-individual differences in behaviours, but the forces generating animal “personality” or individuality remain unclear. We show that experiences gathered solely from social conflict can establish consistent differences in the decision of male crickets to approach or avoid a stimulus directed at one antenna. Adults isolated for 48 h from a colony already exhibit behavioural differences. Prior to staging a single dyadic contest, prospective winners approached the stimulus whereas prospective losers turned away, as they did also after fighting. In contrast, adults raised as nymphs with adult males present but isolated from them as last instar nymphs, all showed avoidance. Furthermore, adults raised without prior adult contact, showed no preferred directional response. However, following a single fight, winners from both these groups showed approach and losers avoidance, but this difference lasted only one day. In contrast, after 6 successive wins or defeats, the different directional responses of multiple winners and losers remained consistent for at least 6 days. Correlation analysis revealed examples of consistent inter-individual differences in the direction and magnitude of turning responses, which also correlated with individual aggressiveness and motility. Together our data reveal that social subjugation, or lack thereof, during post-embryonic and early adult development forges individuality and supports the notion of a proactive–reactive syndrome in crickets.

درس في هذا البحث تأثير تراكيز مختلفة من زيت اللافندر، في نمو فطري Drechslera dematioidea و Alternaria citri ، وقد أبدت جميع التراكيز المدروسة تأثيراً تثبيطياً واضحاً ضد هذين الفطرين. اختلفت الفعالية التثبيطية باختلاف التراكيز، وقد أبدت التراكيز (0.06 – 0.04 – 0.03 – 0.02- 0.006 – 0.004 ml/g) تثبيطاً بنسبة 100% ضد فطر D. dematioidea ، وبلغت نسبة التثبيط 60% عند التركيز 0.002غ/مل في اليوم الحادي عشر من الحضن. أبدت التراكيز (0.06 – 0.04 – 0.03 – 0.02- 0.006 – 0.004 – 0.002 ml/g) تثبيطاً كاملاً ضد فطر A. citri ، وعند التركيز 0.001 غ/مل كانت النسبة المئوية للتثبيط 30.55% . بلغت قيمة التركيز القاتل ( MBC) لزيت اللافندر ضد فطر D. dematioidea 0.006 غ/مل وكانت 0.002 غ/مل ضد فطر A. citri.

BackgroundAntithrombotic therapy is complex and requires informed decisions and high therapy adherence. Several mobile phone apps exist to either support physicians in the management of antithrombotic therapies or to educate and support patients. For the majority of these apps, both their medical evidence and their development background are unknown. ObjectiveThis review aims to investigate the available literature describing high-quality apps for managing antithrombotic therapy based on professional scientific information. MethodsKeywords and Medical Subject Heading terms were used to search MEDLINE via PubMed and Ovid between December 2019 and January 2022. Inclusion criteria were the availability of full text and publications in the English language. Apps that solely focused on atrial fibrillation were excluded. Qualitative findings were thematically synthesized and reported narratively. ResultsOut of 149 identified records, 32 were classified as eligible. We identified four groups: (1) apps for patients supporting self-management of vitamin K antagonists, (2) apps for patients increasing therapy adherence, (3) educational apps for patients, and (4) apps for physicians in supporting guideline adherence. ConclusionsThroughout the evaluated data, patients from all age groups receiving antithrombotic drugs expressed the desire for a digital tool that could support their therapy management. In addition, physicians using mobile guideline-based apps may have contributed to decreased adverse event rates among their patients. In general, digital apps encompassing both user-friendly designs and scientific backgrounds may enhance the safety of antithrombotic therapies. However, our evaluation did not identify any apps that addressed all antithrombotic drugs in combination with perioperative stratification strategies. Currently, strict regulations for smartphone apps seem to negatively affect the development of new apps. Therefore, new legal policies for medical digital apps are urgently needed.

Background: In 2019, about 1.7 million adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 years were living with HIV worldwide, of which 170 000 were newly infected with HIV in 2019. South Africa has the highest number of persons living with HIV. Although there has been major improvement in access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), it is still unclear what proportion of adolescents (aged 10–19 years) are virally suppressed in the provinces of South Africa. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of and the factors associated with viral suppression among adolescents (10–19 years) on ART in the Thabo Mofutsanyane District Municipality of the Free State province of South Africa. Method: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of demographic, clinical and treatment-related information that were extracted from an electronic database was conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26. Results: The median duration on ART was 6.58 years. Although 78% (n = 4520) of adolescents living with HIV who were on ART achieved viral suppression ( 1000 copies/mL), only 9.5% (n = 430) were fully suppressed at 50 copies/mL. In multivariate analysis, the odds of being virally suppressed reduced with increasing age at ART initiation. Adolescents with CD4 counts greater than 500 cells/mm3 at baseline had a higher odds ratio of viral suppression (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.77; confidence interval [CI]: 1.28–2.47). The odds of viral suppression were significantly lower among those not retained in care (AOR: 0.45; CI: 0.35–0.58). Conclusion: Tailored interventions should be developed to improve viral suppression among adolescents on ART.

The use of drama activities is a method that allows learners to improve their communication skills, think critically, learn new vocabulary, and increase their motivation for learning. This study investigates the attitudes of English language teachers, as well as the advantages, problems faced in, and teaching techniques of the English language learning process in Palestinian schools using drama activities. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the researchers investigated the extent to which drama activities are used while teaching English as a second language in Palestinian schools using a questionnaire and interviews. In the questionnaire, the participating English language teachers were 39 females and 12 males. Two teachers were interviewed. The findings confirm the need to implement changes and improvements regarding the use of drama activities in the language classroom. Moreover, the findings suggest following specific drama usage recommendations to ensure satisfactory results for both teachers and students to improve the four language skills. The implication of this study calls for providing clear and sufficient materials for drama classes, as well as offering teachers training programs to enhance their abilities to use drama activities in an effective way.

Cross-matching of blood components to the patient's blood is mandatory to ensure the safe transfusion of suitable blood components in a timely manner and avoid serious harm to the recipient. This article will outline the validated methods of cross-matching in the laboratory setting. We will also discuss transfusion reactions and consequences of transfusion of inappropriate or mismatched blood components, alongside the principles of patient blood management and preoperative anaemia. Abstract Background Hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 have been reported to be at higher risk for death than the general population. Several prognostic factors have been identified in the studies from Asian, European or American countries. This is the first national Lebanese study assessing the factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 mortality in hemodialysis patients. Methods This is an observational study that included all chronic hemodialysis patients in Lebanon who were tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from 31st March to 1st November 2020. Data on demographics, comorbidities, admission to hospital and outcome were collected retrospectively from the patients’ medical records. A binary logistic regression analysis was performed to assess risk factors for mortality. Results A total of 231 patients were included. Mean age was 61.46 ± 13.99 years with a sex ratio of 128 males to 103 females. Around half of the patients were diabetics, 79.2% presented with fever. A total of 115 patients were admitted to the hospital, 59% of them within the first day of diagnosis. Hypoxia was the major reason for hospitalization. Death rate was 23.8% after a median duration of 6 (IQR, 2 to 10) days. Adjusted regression analysis showed a higher risk for death among older patients (odds ratio = 1.038; 95% confidence interval: 1.013, 1.065), patients with heart failure (odds ratio = 4.42; 95% confidence interval: 2.06, 9.49), coronary artery disease (odds ratio = 3.27; 95% confidence interval: 1.69, 6.30), multimorbidities (odds ratio = 1.593; 95% confidence interval: 1.247, 2.036), fever (odds ratio = 6.66; 95% confidence interval: 1.94, 27.81), CRP above 100 mg/L (odds ratio = 4.76; 95% confidence interval: 1.48, 15.30), and pneumonia (odds ratio = 19.18; 95% confidence interval: 6.47, 56.83). Conclusions This national study identified older age, coronary artery disease, heart failure, multimorbidities, fever and pneumonia as risk factors for death in patients with COVID-19 on chronic hemodialysis. The death rate was comparable to other countries and estimated at 23.8%.

Abstract Background New protocols of pulmonary veins isolation (PVI) result in easier and more efficient procedure performance. Ablation index (AI) is the novel tool which helps to achieve transmural lesions during catheter ablation. However, benefit of this protocol in the reduction of myocardial injury is still not known. Purpose The aim of the study was to compare myocardial injury during catheter ablation using standard and AI protocol. Methods To the analysis we included 24 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, who underwent radiofrequency catheter PVI using CARTO system (Biosense Webster, Inc). In all patients cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels were assessed before and 24 hours after the procedure. In 12 patients PVI was performed using continuous applications (dragging technique) and in 12 patients during PVI ablation AI protocol was implemented. To unify analyzed groups, we excluded patients with additional ablation lines (including line separating ipsilateral pulmonary veins). Results In analyzed group mean age was 59.3 ± 7.7 years and 18 (75%) patients were male. There were no differences in the clinical characteristic between both subgroups. Trend in shorter total x‐ray time was observed in AI group compared with dragging group (8.6 ± 5.4 vs. 5.3 ± 3.2 min.; P = .093) with no differences in total procedure time (146.3 ± 28.9 vs. 153.2 ± 37.1 min.; P = .616). Twenty‐four hours after the PVI procedure cTnI levels were significantly lower in AI group than in dragging group (1.984 ± 0.644 vs. 3.369 ± 1.818 ng/mL; P = .026), with no difference in mean baseline cTnI levels (0.004 ± 0.006 vs. 0.015 ± 0.032 ng/mL; P = .304). Conclusion Presented study revealed that compared with standard, continuous applications, AI protocol implementation results in reduction of myocardial injury during catheter PVI in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Three types of mills (Buhler, Quadrumat, and industry mill) have been used to determine the effect of mill type on the quality of the produced flour. Quadrumat and Buhler mills are usually used to produce flour at a laboratory level. Flour quality has been determined physically, chemically, and rheologically. Results showed that the particle size of flour produced by Buhler mill (FPB) was finer (mostly less than 132 μm) than other produced flour, while flour produced by Quadrumat mill (FPQ) had 8% particle size bigger than 50gg, which is more than Iraqi accepted limit (5%). The moisture content of FPQ exceeded the moisture content limit (14%). While, all flour produced by industry mills (FPI) was within the Iraqi standard in term of particle sizes and moisture content. Gluten content of FPB was higher than other produced flours; however, most increments were not significantly different. The results also showed that using different mills has no clear effect on the gluten index and alpha-amylase activity. Farinogram and extensogram results showed that FPQ was stronger than other produced flour followed by FPI. In conclusion, the quality of FPQ was closer to the quality of FPI, however, Quadrumat mill needs to be adjusted to produce flour with finer particle sizes and lower moisture content. The Buhler mill, on the other hand, needs to be adjusted to produce flour with bigger particle size. Both laboratory mills (Quadrumat and Buhler) need to be adjusted to produce flour that expresses FPI correctly.

Many joints in the body depend on cartilage for their mechanical function. Since cartilage lacks the ability to self-heal when injured, treatments and replacements for damaged cartilage have been created in recent decades. The mechanical tests had an important role in the treatment and designing of the replaced cartilage. There are two types of cartilages in the knees: fibrocartilage (the meniscus, it is a special type of cartilage) and hyaline cartilage. Its mechanical properties are important because structural failure of cartilage is closely related with joint disorders. This study aimed to determine the stress-strain curve to give broader understanding of the material’s properties. The results of this study could help to develop computational models for evaluating mechanics of knee joint, predicting possible failure locations and disease progression in joints. The study involved two specimens taken from bovine, the first was the articular cartilage with subchondral bone and the second was the meniscus cartilage each one loaded on a compressive testing machine to compute the displacement, and the force applied, enabling the calculation of the stress-strain curve of the material. Specimen failure occurred in the articular cartilage surface at a force break of 73.8N and get force peak about 87.2 N. The meniscus cartilage failure had occurred at a force break of 29.2 N and get force peak about 34.9 N.

UnlabelledAltered dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) binding in the striatum has been associated with abnormal motivation in neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Here, we tested whether motivational deficits observed in mice with upregulated D2Rs (D2R-OEdev mice) are reversed by decreasing function of the striatopallidal "no-go" pathway. To this end, we expressed the Gαi-coupled designer receptor hM4D in adult striatopallidal neurons and activated the receptor with clozapine-N-oxide (CNO). Using a head-mounted miniature microscope we confirmed with calcium imaging in awake mice that hM4D activation by CNO inhibits striatopallidal function measured as disinhibited downstream activity in the globus pallidus. Mice were then tested in three operant tasks that address motivated behavior, the progressive ratio task, the progressive hold-down task, and outcome devaluation. Decreasing striatopallidal function in the dorsomedial striatum or nucleus accumbens core enhanced motivation in D2R-OEdev mice and control littermates. This effect was due to increased response initiation but came at the cost of goal-directed efficiency. Moreover, response vigor and the sensitivity to changes in reward value were not altered. Chronic activation of hM4D by administering CNO for 2 weeks in drinking water did not affect motivation due to a tolerance effect. However, the acute effect of CNO on motivation was reinstated after discontinuing chronic treatment for 48 h. Used as a therapeutic approach, striatopallidal inhibition should consider the risk of impairing goal-directed efficiency and behavioral desensitization.Significance statementMotivation involves a directional component that allows subjects to efficiently select the behavior that will lead to an optimal outcome and an activational component that initiates and maintains the vigor and persistence of actions. Striatal output pathways modulate motivated behavior, but it remains unknown how these pathways regulate specific components of motivation. Here, we found that the indirect pathway controls response initiation without affecting response vigor or the sensitivity to changes in the reward outcome. A specific enhancement in the activational component of motivation, however, can come at the cost of goal-directed efficiency when a sustained response is required to obtain the goal. These data should inform treatment strategies for brain disorders with impaired motivation such as schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease.

Spot welding joints of Al-Mg-Si alloy (AA6061-T6) were produced with and without the addition of copper interlayer using pinless friction stir spot welding (P-FSSW). To investigate the effects of welding parameters on the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the weldment, various tool plunge depth and dwell time were used. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) have been used for microstructural characterisation.Meanwhile, the mechanical characterisation of the welded joints was evaluated by tensile-shear test. The experimental results showed that a larger bonding area and sound joint were achieved with the addition of Cu interlayer due to the improvement in thermal distribution. Also, an alloying reaction took place between the aluminium substrate and Cu interlayer during P-FSSW, forming intermetallic compounds layer in the interface through the diffusion process. The increasing of dwell time and plunge depth to some extent were beneficial to the formation of the joint and diffusion process, and thus increasing the tensile-shear load of the joints. The observed fracture mode of the joint was either completely shear off in the interface or complete nugget pullout.

Current guidelines do not address a recommended duration of parenteral therapy for uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI) treatment in the inpatient setting. We compared a 3-day course of ceftriaxone with longer antibiotic durations for inpatients with a uUTI. Our findings indicate that a 3-day course of ceftriaxone was as efficacious as longer antibiotic courses.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, and peripapillary atrophy (PPA) is a morphological symptom associated with it. Therefore, it is necessary to clinically detect PPA for glaucoma diagnosis. This study was aimed at developing a detection method for PPA using fundus images with deep learning algorithms to be used by ophthalmologists or optometrists for screening purposes. The model was developed based on localization for the region of interest (ROI) using a mask region-based convolutional neural networks R-CNN and a classification network for the presence of PPA using CNN deep learning algorithms. A total of 2,472 images, obtained from five public sources and one Saudi-based resource (King Abdullah International Medical Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia), were used to train and test the model. First the images from public sources were analyzed, followed by those from local sources, and finally, images from both sources were analyzed together. In testing the classification model, the area under the curve’s (AUC) scores of 0.83, 0.89, and 0.87 were obtained for the local, public, and combined sets, respectively. The developed model will assist in diagnosing glaucoma in screening programs; however, more research is needed on segmenting the PPA boundaries for more detailed PPA detection, which can be combined with optic disc and cup boundaries to calculate the cup-to-disc ratio.

Aim. To evaluate over a six-year period, the prevalence of the dental procedures in primary and mixed dentitions, in males and females. Materials and Methods. A retrospective descriptive study on dental treatments in primary and mixed dentitions was conducted in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Lebanese University, from 2015 to 2020. The total number of children was 1291. Data were classified and reviewed according to the dentition type, gender, and type of dental treatment. Results. The number of children decreased from 741 for the period 2015–2017 to 550 during the period 2018–2020 (279 males and 271 females). No significant association was found between the admission periods and the genders. A significant relationship was found between the number of treatments performed in both genders and the dentition types (p value = 0,015). Males were slightly more likely than females to present for the treatment in mixed dentition (54.58% versus 45.2%, respectively). Results portrayed a significant relationship between surgical treatment and gender (p value = 0.049). However, no significant relationship between gender and other treatment types was noted. Health authorities worldwide strive to detect Influenza prevalence as early as possible in order to prepare for it and minimize its impacts. To this end, we address the Influenza prevalence surveillance and prediction problem. In this paper, we develop a new Influenza prevalence prediction model, called Tweetluenza, to predict the spread of the Influenza in real time using cross-lingual data harvested from Twitter data streams with emphases on the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Based on the features of tweets, Tweetluenza filters the Influenza tweets and classifies them into two classes, reporting and non-reporting. To monitor the growth of Influenza, the reporting tweets were employed. Furthermore, a linear regression model leverages the reporting tweets to predict the Influenza-related hospital visits in the future. We evaluated Tweetluenza empirically to study its feasibility and compared the results with the actual hospital visits recorded by the UAE Ministry of Health. The results of our experiments demonstrate the practicality of Tweetluenza, which was verified by the high correlation between the Influenza-related Twitter data and hospital visits due to Influenza. Furthermore, the evaluation of the analysis and prediction of Influenza shows that combining English and Arabic tweets improves the correlation results.

The U.S. Supreme Court decisions in U.S. v. Windsor (570 U.S. 307) and Hollingsworth v. Perry (570 U.S. 399) created a focal point for public discussion of marriage equality for same-sex couples. This article reports the results of an exploratory study of the reactions of individuals currently or previously in same-sex couple relationships and a heterosexual sibling who is currently or previously married (N = 371) to the Supreme Court decisions. Thematic content analysis was used to explore participants’ responses to an open-ended question on a survey. Reactions of individuals from same-sex couples revealed the following themes: (1) longitudinal perspectives on the advancement of rights for same-sex couples; (2) emotional responses celebrating the decisions or expressing relief; (3) affirmation of their relationship or rights; (4) practical consequences of the extension of rights; and (5) minority stress related to anticipation of future prejudice or discrimination. Themes in the heterosexual siblings’ responses were (1) ally support; (2) flat support without emotion or elaboration; (3) indifference to or ignorance about the decisions; and (4) disapproval of the decisions. These themes are compared and discussed in light of prior research on reactions to marriage restriction debates and marriage (in)equality and family relationships.

Organisms are constantly extracting information from the temporal structure of the environment, which allows them to select appropriate actions and predict impending changes.  Several lines of research have suggested that interval timing is modulated by the dopaminergic system.  It has been proposed that higher levels of dopamine cause an internal clock to speed up, whereas less dopamine causes a deceleration of the clock.  In most experiments the subjects are first trained to perform a timing task while drug free.  Consequently, most of what is known about the influence of dopaminergic modulation of timing is on well-established timing performance.  In the current study the impact of altered DA on the acquisition of temporal control was the focal question.  Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were distributed randomly into three different groups (haloperidol, d-amphetamine or vehicle).  Each animal received an injection 15 min prior to the start of every session from the beginning of interval training.  The subjects were trained in a Fixed Interval (FI) 16s schedule followed by training on a peak procedure in which 64s non-reinforced peak trials were intermixed with FI trials.  In a final test session all subjects were given vehicle injections and 10 consecutive non-reinforced peak trials to see if training under drug conditions altered the encoding of time.  The current study suggests that administration of drugs that modulate dopamine do not alter the encoding temporal durations but do acutely affect the initiation of responding.

Naegleria fowleri (N. fowleri) is a free-living, unicellular, opportunistic protist responsible for the fatal central nervous system infection, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Given the increase in temperatures due to global warming and climate change, it is estimated that the cases of PAM are on the rise. However, there is a current lack of awareness and effective drugs, meaning there is an urgent need to develop new therapeutic drugs. In this study, the target compounds were synthesized and tested for their anti-amoebic properties against N. fowleri. Most compounds exhibited significant amoebicidal effects against N. fowleri; for example, 1h, 1j, and 1q reduced N. fowleri’s viability to 15.14%, 17.45% and 28.78%, respectively. Furthermore, the majority of the compounds showed reductions in amoeba-mediated host death. Of interest are the compounds 1f, 1k, and 1v, as they were capable of reducing the amoeba-mediated host cell death to 52.3%, 51%, and 56.9% from 100%, respectively. Additionally, these compounds exhibit amoebicidal properties as well; they were found to decrease N. fowleri’s viability to 26.41%, 27.39%, and 24.13% from 100%, respectively. Moreover, the MIC50 values for 1e, 1f, and 1h were determined to be 48.45 µM, 60.87 µM, and 50.96 µM, respectively. Additionally, the majority of compounds were found to exhibit limited cytotoxicity, except for 1l, 1o, 1p, 1m, 1c, 1b, 1zb, 1z, 1y, and 1x, which exhibited negligible toxicity. It is anticipated that these compounds may be developed further as effective treatments against these devastating infections due to brain-eating amoebae.

We examined the antiamoebic effect of several imidazothiazole derivatives on Acanthamoeba castellanii of the T4 genotype. Trypan blue exclusion assays and haemocytometer counting were used to determine the reduction in A. castellanii trophozoite proliferation, in response to treatment with these compounds. To determine the effects of these compounds on host cells, lactate dehydrogenase assay was performed using HeLa cell lines. Amoebicidal assays revealed that the tested compounds at concentrations of 50 µM significantly inhibited amoebae trophozoites compared to controls. Compounds 1m and 1zb showed the highest amoebicidal effects eradicating 70% and 67% of A. castellanii, respectively. The compounds blocked both the encystation and excystation process in A. castellanii. Compounds 1m and 1zb blocked 61% and 55%, respectively, of amoeba binding to human cells. Moreover, the compounds showed minimal cytotoxic effects against host cells and considerably reduced amoeba-mediated host cell death. Overall, our study revealed that compounds 1m and 1zb have excellent antiamoebic potential, and should be considered in the development of curative antiamoebic medications in future studies. Further work is critical to determine the translational value of these findings.

The free-living amoeba Acanthamoeba castellanii is responsible for the central nervous infection granulomatous amoebic encephalitis and sight-threatening infection Acanthamoeba keratitis. Moreover, no effective treatment is currently present, and a combination drug therapy is used. In this study, twelve DNA minor groove binders (MGBs) were synthesized and tested for their antiamoebic activity via amoebicidal, encystation, excystation, and cytopathogenicity assays. It was found that the compounds MGB3, MGB6, MGB22, MGB24, and MGB16 significantly reduce amoeba viability to 76.20%, 59.45%, 66.5%, 39.32%, and 43.21%, respectively, in amoebicidal assays. Moreover, the compounds MGB6, MGB20, MGB22, MGB28, MGB30, MGB32, and MGB16 significantly inhibit Acanthamoeba cysts, leading to the development of only 46.3%, 39%, 30.3%, 29.6%, 27.8%, 41.5%, and 45.6% cysts. Additionally, the compounds MGB3, MGB4, MGB6, MGB22, MGB24, MGB28, MGB32, and MGB16 significantly reduce the re-emergence of cysts to trophozoites, with viable trophozoites being only 64.3%, 47.3%, 41.4%, 52.9%, 55.4%, 40.6%, 62.1%, and 51.7%. Moreover, the compounds MGB3, MGB4, and MGB6 exhibited the greatest reduction in amoeba-mediated host-cell death, with cell death reduced to 41.5%, 49.4%, and 49.5%. With the following determined, future in vivo studies can be carried out to understand the effect of the compounds on animal models such as mice.

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a worldwide pandemic, many countries' authorities, including the Iraqi authorities, started responding and taking action to control the spread of the pandemic. The public's knowledge and practices play an important role in curbing the spreading of the virus by following the health guidelines. This study aimed to assess the socio-demographic correlate of knowledge and practices of Iraqi living in Mosul-Iraq towards COVID-19 during its rapid rise. A cross-sectional online survey of 909 participants was conducted among a sample of the Mosul-Iraq population between 20th June to 1st July 2020. The survey included three parts: 1) socio-demographic characteristics, 2) participants' knowledge, 3) participants' practices. T-test, ANOVA, chi-square, and binary logistic regression were used. A p-value less than 0.05 (p < 0.05) was considered statistically significant. The results showed a knowledge and practice mean score of (12.91±1.67) and (21.56± 2.92) with cumulative knowledge and practice of 86% and 76% respectively towards COVID-19. BackgroundKnowledge, attitudes, perception, and preventative practices regarding coronavirus- 2019 (COVID-19) are crucial in its prevention and control. Several studies have noted that the majority of people in sub-Saharan African are noncompliant with proposed health and safety measures recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and respective country health departments. In most sub-Saharan African countries, noncompliance is attributable to ignorance and misinformation, thereby raising questions about people's knowledge, attitudes, perception, and practices towards COVID-19 in these settings. This situation is particularly of concern for governments and public health experts. Thus, this scoping review is aimed at mapping evidence on the knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and preventive practices (KAP) towards COVID-19 in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).MethodsSystematic searches of relevant articles were performed using databases such as the EBSCOhost, PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, the WHO library and grey literature. Arksey and O'Malley's framework guided the study. The risk of bias for included primary studies was assessed using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT). NVIVO version 10 was used to analyse the data and a thematic content analysis was used to present the review's narrative account.ResultsA total of 3037 eligible studies were identified after the database search. Only 28 studies met the inclusion criteria after full article screening and were included for data extraction. Studies included populations from the following SSA countries: Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Sierra Leone. All the included studies showed evidence of knowledge related to COVID-19. Eleven studies showed that participants had a positive attitude towards COVID-19, and fifteen studies showed that participants had good practices towards COVID-19.ConclusionsMost of the participants had adequate knowledge related to COVID-19. Despite adequate knowledge, the attitude was not always positive, thereby necessitating further education to convey the importance of forming a positive attitude and continuous preventive practice towards reducing contraction and transmission of COVID-19.

In response to the global COVID-19 epidemic, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government is taking precautionary action to mitigate the spread of the virus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and practices toward COVID-19 among the general public in the UAE during the current outbreak. A cross-sectional online survey of 1356 respondents in the UAE was conducted during the epidemic outbreak between 9th to 24th June-2020. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: Socio-demographic, knowledge, practices. Independent-samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-square and binary logistic regression was used. A p-value of (p < 0.05) was considered statistically significant. The total correct score of knowledge and practice questions was high 85% and 90%, respectively. Male's sex, other marital status, and illiterate/primary educational levels had a lower level of knowledge and practices than others. Participants aged 18-29 had little higher knowledge than other ages but had a lower level in practices, people who live in Abu Dhabi had better knowledge and practices than other emirates, employed people had a lower level of knowledge but higher in practices. Binary logistic regression analysis presented that females, 18-29 years, and married participants significantly associated with a higher score of knowledge, while female, over 30 years old, the martial status of singles, college-level and higher, unemployed, were significantly associated with high mean practices score. This study provided a full screening of the knowledge and practices among a sample of residents in The UAE toward COVID-19, continuing to implement the health education programs pursued by the UAE is highly important to maintain the appropriate level of awareness among the public.
