International audience; L'intérêt industriel pour les fibres libériennes végétales utilisées comme renforts de matériaux composites augmente. Cette tendance s'explique notamment par leur faible impact sur l'environnement et leurs propriétés mécaniques spécifiques très intéressantes [1] qui les rendent attractives pour les applications transportées. Les propriétés en traction des fibres élémentaires sont bien décrites dans la littérature [2], mais des informations complémentaires à l'échelle de la paroi cellulaire sont nécessaires pour mieux comprendre la relation entre leur ultrastructure et leurs performances mécaniques. Le but de ce travail est de présenter des premiers résultats issus de manipulations effectuées en microscopie à force atomique (AFM) associée au mode PeakForce Quantitative Nanomécanique (PF-QNM). Dans un premier temps, cet outil a été utilisé afin de mettre en évidence un gradient mécanique potentiel de rigidité dans les couches de la paroi cellulaire des fibres de lin, en utilisant la nanoindentation comme mesure de référence. Tout d'abord, pour valider la méthode et explorer les possibilités d'imagerie d'un gradient de rigidité, le PF-QNM a été utilisé sur les fibres d'aramide, bien connues pour posséder une microstructure coeur-peau. Ensuite, la méthodologie a été transférée aux fibres de lin ; des cartographies de rigidité ont été effectuées à l'échelle nanométrique, à la fois sur des parois cellulaires en développement (Fig.1) et matures. Topographie (a) et cartographie du module d'indentation (b) obtenues sur une section de fibre de lin en cours de croissance Ces cartographies nous ont permis de mettre en évidence la présence de sous couches G et G n au sein de la paroi cellulaire secondaire des fibres en cours en développement [3] ; en revanche aucun gradient de propriété mécanique n'a pu être décelé dans les sections de fibres matures.
