The effects of desert dust upon climate and ecosystems depend strongly on its particle size and size-resolved mineralogical composition. However, there is very limited quantitative knowledge on the particle size and composition of the parent sediments along with their variability within dust-source regions, particularly in dust emission hotspots. The lower Drâa Valley, an inland drainage basin and dust hotspot region located in the Moroccan Sahara, was chosen for a comprehensive analysis of sediment particle size and mineralogy. Different sediment type samples (n= 42) were collected, including paleo-sediments, paved surfaces, crusts, and dunes, and analysed for particle-size distribution (minimally and fully dispersed samples) and mineralogy. Furthermore, Fe sequential wet extraction was carried out to characterise the modes of occurrence of Fe, including Fe in Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, mainly from goethite and hematite, which are key to dust radiative effects; the poorly crystalline pool of Fe (readily exchangeable ionic Fe and Fe in nano-Fe oxides), relevant to dust impacts upon ocean biogeochemistry; and structural Fe. Results yield a conceptual model where both particle size and mineralogy are segregated by transport and deposition of sediments during runoff of water across the basin and by the precipitation of salts, which causes a sedimentary fractionation. The proportion of coarser particles enriched in quartz is higher in the highlands, while that of finer particles rich in clay, carbonates, and Fe oxides is higher in the lowland dust emission hotspots. There, when water ponds and evaporates, secondary carbonates and salts precipitate, and the clays are enriched in readily exchangeable ionic Fe, due to sorption of dissolved Fe by illite. The results differ from currently available mineralogical atlases and highlight the need for observationally constrained global high-resolution mineralogical data for mineral-speciated dust modelling. The dataset obtained represents an important resource for future evaluation of surface mineralogy retrievals from spaceborne spectroscopy.

The study focuses on how local administrations can activate and foster the process of linking cultural heritage to civic wealth creation by engaging different stakeholders in urban regeneration initiatives. The research design relies on the observation of a project known as “the Relaunch of the DATA space” – the stables of the Duke Federico da Montefeltro – in Urbino (Italy). The premises that activated local communities to collaborate on the project have been reconstructed and interpreted under the theoretical lens of civic wealth creation. The methodology adopted to reconstruct the processes put in place, the premises and factors that activated the mechanisms supposed to create civic wealth and the outcomes generated, was based on a qualitative approach. Multiple sources (both primary and secondary sources) were used to grasp stakeholders’ opinions on culture-led regeneration initiatives and to identify approaches for citizen engagement, including semi-structured interviews addressed to key actors involved in the project, analysis of public documents and public discussions, municipality website and the city strategic plan. Findings highlight that the rediscovery and reuse of one’s cultural heritage rooted in a common identity may become the glue that favours networking and the community’s wellbeing. However, as civic wealth creation requires the key stakeholders’ expectations come together, our case study reveals that collaboration among stakeholders strongly necessitates the support of the local administration as a facilitator/orchestrator, pursuing balance among different visions and needs over time. Lo studio affronta il tema di come le amministrazioni locali fronteggiano la sfida di rigenerare le città storiche culturali grazie all’impegno delle comunità e degli stakeholder valorizzando il patrimonio culturale (CH). Il caso di studio presentato è quello della città di Urbino (Italia), patrimonio UNESCO. Il disegno di ricerca si basa sull’osservazione di un’iniziativa specifica, nota come “il rilancio dello spazio DATA” (le scuderie del Duca Federico da Montefeltro risalenti al Rinascimento). Le premesse che hanno attivato le comunità locali a collaborare al progetto sono state ricostruite e interpretate sotto la lente teorica della creazione di ricchezza civica. La metodologia adottata per ricostruire i processi messi in atto, i fattori che hanno attivato i meccanismi di generazione di ricchezza civica e i risultati generati, si è basata su un approccio qualitativo. Per cogliere la percezione degli stakeholder sul CH e identificare gli approcci per il coinvolgimento dei cittadini, le informazioni sono state tratte da una molteplicità di fonti primarie e secondarie (interviste non strutturate rivolte agli attori chiave coinvolti nel progetto, analisi di documenti e discussioni pubbliche, delibere del Consiglio comunale, analisi del sito web del Comune). I risultati evidenziano che la riscoperta del proprio patrimonio culturale, basato sull’eredità del passato ma riutilizzato nella vita quotidiana, può diventare il collante che favorisce il networking e il benessere della comunità. Tuttavia, poiché la creazione di ricchezza civica richiede che visioni e interessi dei principali stakeholder convergano, il caso di studio rivela che la collaborazione tra gli stakeholder ha fortemente bisogno del sostegno dell’amministrazione locale come facilitatore/organizzatore capace di perseguire nel tempo un equilibrio tra le diverse esigenze e aspettative.

Abstract Porcelain is a ceramic tile used worldwide, especially for its technical and aesthetic properties. In this increasingly competitive sector, innovative products are continually developed to meet the market’s demands, such as glazed ceramic tiles with a matte surface, low surface gloss, and silky texture. In this research, a matte glaze for porcelain tiles with low surface brightness (9 to 14 UB) and silky texture was obtained. In particular, 16 formulations of ceramic glaze were studied, which were ground and applied to binil on a laboratory scale and then fired in an industrial kiln at 1192 °C for 45 min. The fired specimens were physically, chemically, thermally, and structurally characterized. The formulation that yielded the best results was tested on an industrial scale and technologically characterized. This formulation met the aesthetic (texture and gloss) and technological (resistance to staining, chemical attack, surface abrasion, and cracking) requirements of the Brazilian technical standard.

Abstract The prognosis of relapsed/refractory (R/R) neuroblastoma (NB) is dismal, calling for new therapeutic strategies. Venetoclax (VEN) is a highly selective, potent, orally bioavailable, BCL-2 inhibitor small-molecule that showed a synergistic effect with cyclophosphamide and topotecan (Cy-Topo) in murine NB models. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of VEN plus Cy-Topo in children with R/R NB. Four patients, who had previously failed > 3 lines of treatment, were treated with VEN plus Cy-Topo based on a 28-day schedule in an outpatient setting. BCL-2 expression in immunochemistry on tumor samples at relapse and the BCL2 gene status was evaluated in all patients. The main toxicity was hematological, with grade 4 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia occurring in all courses and leading to transient VEN discontinuation. Grade 3 oral mucositis was observed in 1/8 courses. No other grade 2–4 toxicities were observed. BCL-2 was expressed in all tumors, while no molecular abnormalities in the BCL-2 genes were detected. A stable disease was observed in all patients, without any progression during the study period. VEN plus Cy-Topo is well tolerated, with encouraging results that may be improved by testing the schedule in less advanced patients.

Abstract Despite the amount of data on different aspects of biodiversity, such as species distributions, taxonomy, or phylogenetics, there are still significant gaps and biases in the available information. This is particularly true for life history traits, with fragmentary data for most taxa, especially those with complex life cycles. Anurans (frogs and toads) show larval (premetamorphic) stages that are in general radically decoupled from adult forms in most biological aspects. Our understanding of this group is highly uneven, as the main wide-scope investigations focus on adult specimens and larval stages remain unknown for a significant part of the anuran tree. The main purpose of this work was to estimate the extent of knowledge gaps regarding the diversity of tadpoles, interpret their biological and geographical patterns, and discuss possible explanations and implications for other large-scale analyses. Our findings show that more than half of the anuran species described to date still lack information on their embryonic/larval stages. Furthermore, knowledge varies among taxonomic groups, larval ecomorphological guilds, and world ecoregions. Description percentages generally decrease in lineages with a higher proportion of species known or suspected to have endotrophic development. Also, geographic areas with the highest levels of ignorance in larval biology (Tropical Andes and New Guinea) coincide with the highest diversity of endotrophic guilds. Among exotrophic larvae, generalized lentic-lotic tadpoles have the widest distribution and levels of knowledge, whereas specialized lotic, fossorial, and terrestrial forms are more taxonomically and geographically restricted. Further large-scale analyses on tadpole biology are crucial for their impact in varied scientific disciplines including anuran conservation. At a conceptual level, the discussion of the anuran biphasic life cycle is pertinent in the context of shortfalls of biodiversity knowledge and their interrelationships.

Stiffness modulus represents one of the most important parameters for the mechanical characterization of asphalt mixtures (AMs). At the same time, it is a crucial input parameter in the process of designing flexible pavements. In the present study, two selected mixtures were thoroughly investigated in an experimental trial carried out by means of a four-point bending test (4PBT) apparatus. The mixtures were prepared using spilite aggregate, a conventional 50/70 penetration grade bitumen, and limestone filler. Their stiffness moduli (SM) were determined while samples were exposed to 11 loading frequencies (from 0.1 to 50 Hz) and 4 testing temperatures (from 0 to 30 °C). The SM values ranged from 1222 to 24,133 MPa. Observations were recorded and used to develop a machine learning (ML) model. The main scope was the prediction of the stiffness moduli based on the volumetric properties and testing conditions of the corresponding mixtures, which would provide the advantage of reducing the laboratory efforts required to determine them. Two of the main soft computing techniques were investigated to accomplish this task, namely decision trees with the Categorical Boosting algorithm and artificial neural networks. The outcomes suggest that both ML methodologies achieved very good results, with Categorical Boosting showing better performance (MAPE = 3.41% and R2 = 0.9968) and resulting in more accurate and reliable predictions in terms of the six goodness-of-fit metrics that were implemented.

Abstract Background Atrophic acne scarring often accompanies acne vulgaris. The efficacy of topical retinoids for treatment of acne is well documented; however, evidence for use in atrophic acne scars is limited. Methods In this randomized, split-face, double-blind study, subjects (age: 17–34 years, N = 121) with moderate-to-severe facial acne, with acne scars present, were treated with either trifarotene 50 μg/g or vehicle once daily for 24 weeks. Efficacy was assessed by absolute and percent change from baseline in atrophic acne scar counts, Scar Global assessment (SGA), and IGA success rates as well as acne lesion counts. Results At week 24, a statistically significantly greater reduction in the mean absolute change from baseline in the total atrophic scar count was noted in the trifarotene- vs vehicle-treated area (− 5.9 vs − 2.7; p 1%) was skin tightness (1.7% vs 0.8%), and all events were mild to moderate in severity. Conclusions Trifarotene was effective and well tolerated in treating moderate-to-severe facial acne and reducing atrophic acne scars, with reduction of total atrophic scar count as early as week 2. Background and purpose: Differentiating pediatric posterior fossa (PF) tumors such as medulloblastoma (MB), ependymoma (EP), and pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) remains relevant, because of important treatment and prognostic implications. Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) has not yet been investigated for discrimination of pediatric PF tumors. Estimating diffusion values from whole-tumor-based (VOI) segmentations may improve diffusion measurement repeatability compared to conventional region-of-interest (ROI) approaches. Our purpose was to compare repeatability between ROI and VOI DKI-derived diffusion measurements and assess DKI accuracy in discriminating among pediatric PF tumors. Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 34 children (M, F, mean age 7.48 years) with PF tumors who underwent preoperative examination on a 3 Tesla magnet, including DKI. For each patient, two neuroradiologists independently segmented the whole solid tumor, the ROI of the area of maximum tumor diameter, and a small 5 mm ROI. The automated analysis pipeline included inter-observer variability, statistical, and machine learning (ML) analyses. We evaluated inter-observer variability with coefficient of variation (COV) and Bland–Altman plots. We estimated DKI metrics accuracy in discriminating among tumor histology with MANOVA analysis. In order to account for class imbalances, we applied SMOTE to balance the dataset. Finally, we performed a Random Forest (RF) machine learning classification analysis based on all DKI metrics from the SMOTE dataset by partitioning 70/30 the training and testing cohort. Results: Tumor histology included medulloblastoma (15), pilocytic astrocytoma (14), and ependymoma (5). VOI-based measurements presented lower variability than ROI-based measurements across all DKI metrics and were used for the analysis. DKI-derived metrics could accurately discriminate between tumor subtypes (Pillai’s trace: p < 0.001). SMOTE generated 11 synthetic observations (10 EP and 1 PA), resulting in a balanced dataset with 45 instances (34 original and 11 synthetic). ML analysis yielded an accuracy of 0.928, which correctly predicted all but one lesion in the testing set. Conclusions: VOI-based measurements presented improved repeatability compared to ROI-based measurements across all diffusion metrics. An ML classification algorithm resulted accurate in discriminating PF tumors on a SMOTE-generated dataset. ML techniques based on DKI-derived metrics are useful for the discrimination of pediatric PF tumors.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about risks associated with germline SUFU pathogenic variants (PVs) known as a cancer predisposition syndrome. METHODS: To study tumour risks, we have analysed data of a large cohort of 45 unpublished patients with a germline SUFU PV completed with 127 previously published patients. To reduce the ascertainment bias due to index patient selection, the risk of tumours was evaluated in relatives with SUFU PV (89 patients) using the Nelson-Aalen estimator. RESULTS: Overall, 117/172 (68%) SUFU PV carriers developed at least one tumour: medulloblastoma (MB) (86 patients), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (25 patients), meningioma (20 patients) and gonadal tumours (11 patients). Thirty-three of them (28%) had multiple tumours. Median age at diagnosis of MB, gonadal tumour, first BCC and first meningioma were 1.5, 14, 40 and 44 years, respectively. Follow-up data were available for 160 patients (137 remained alive and 23 died). The cumulative incidence of tumours in relatives was 14.4% (95% CI 6.8 to 21.4), 18.2% (95% CI 9.7 to 25.9) and 44.1% (95% CI 29.7 to 55.5) at the age of 5, 20 and 50 years, respectively. The cumulative risk of an MB, gonadal tumour, BCC and meningioma at age 50 years was: 13.3% (95% CI 6 to 20.1), 4.6% (95% CI 0 to 9.7), 28.5% (95% CI 13.4 to 40.9) and 5.2% (95% CI 0 to 12), respectively. Sixty-four different PVs were reported across the entire SUFU gene and inherited in 73% of cases in which inheritance could be evaluated. CONCLUSION: Germline SUFU PV carriers have a life-long increased risk of tumours with a spectrum dominated by MB before the age of 5, gonadal tumours during adolescence and BCC and meningioma in adulthood, justifying fine-tuned surveillance programmes.

Although most literature in relation to student teaching evaluations argue that when the administrative format is switched from paper based to online, the impact on professors' teaching scores is minimal, but faculty may still resist change from one format to another. This article describes a pilot study at a medium sized, western university whose primary mission is teaching, and which is transitioning the student teaching evaluations from a paper based to an online format. To gain faculty support and proceed with the format change, a comparative study was carried out in the business department, one of the larger departments in the university. Statistical differences between 24 (paper) and 22 (online) teaching evaluations from 21 professors were compared using inferential statistics (t-test). While the main finding (no difference between the two administrative formats) follows the literature, some additional evidence argues that students teaching evaluations tend to be lower on business courses that develop quantitative skills. In spite of limitations related to sample size and teaching score used for the comparative analysis, the findings offer positive support to the university administration in switching formats. However, when analyzing these differences individually, substantial implications for faculty and their performance evaluations may arise.
