In this study, pinecone sawdust (PCS) performance was investigated for Basic Red 46 (BR 46) dye adsorption from aqueous solutions. The physicochemical and morphological characterization of PCS before and after BR 46 adsorption were evaluated with the help of Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Effects of initial dye concentration, temperature and contact time were determined for BR 46 adsorption. Seventeen equilibrium isotherm models and eight kinetic models were compared at 298 K, 308 K and 318 K temperatures for five different concentrations which varied from 20 to 60 mg/L. The obtained adsorption data best-fit the Freundlich model among all the applied isotherm models, and the maximum adsorption capacity (q
m ) was calculated as 129.87 mg/g at 298 K. The pseudo-second-order model was the best choice to describe the adsorption behavior among all the applied kinetic models. The removal percentage of BR 46 dye with PCS was 74.52% at 318 K for 60 mg/L concentration. The negative free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) values of adsorption were calculated as − 2837 kJ/mol, 18,898 kJ/mol and 68.51 J/mol K, respectively. This adsorption process was spontaneous and favorable, coinciding with the negative free energy. The activation energy (EA ) value of this process was determined with the Arrhenius equation as 19.92 kJ/mol. The reliability of all results was analyzed statistically and evaluated with correlation coefficient (R2 ), sum of squares, sum of the square of error and mean square of error values. As a result of this study, PCS can be used effectively for BR 46 dye removal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
In central nervous system (CNS), demyelination is a pathological process featured with a loss of myelin sheaths around axons, which is responsible for the diseases of multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, and so on. Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1) is a multifunctional cytokine participating in abundant physiological and pathological processes in CNS. However, the effects of TGF-β1 on CNS demyelinating disease and its underlying mechanisms are controversial and not well understood. Herein, we evaluated the protective potential of TGF-β1 in a rodent demyelinating model established by lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) injection. It was identified that supplement of TGF-β1 evidently rescued the cognitive deficit and motor dysfunction in LPC modeling mice assessed by novel object recognition and balance beam behavioral tests. Besides, quantified by luxol fast blue staining, immunofluorescence, and western blot, administration of TGF-β1 was found to significantly ameliorate the demyelinating lesion and reactive astrogliosis by suppressing p38 MAPK pathway. Mechanistically, the results of in vitro experiments indicated that treatment of TGF-β1 could directly promote the differentiation and migration of cultured oligodendrocytes. Our study revealed that modulating TGF-β1 activity might serve as a promising and innovative therapeutic strategy in CNS demyelinating diseases., (© 2024 International Society for Neurochemistry.)

Objective: Children with suspicious complaints of rheumatic diseases are generally referred to a pediatric rheumatologist. We aimed to evaluate the profile of patients referred to the pediatric rheumatology unit and were not diagnosed with a rheumatic disease and to assess the impact of the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic on referral complaints. Materials and Methods: All new outpatients who applied to the pediatric rheumatology department between March 2019 and February 2021 and were not diagnosed with rheumatic disease were included. We also compared the frequency of admission symptoms during the pre-pandemic (March 2019-February 2020) and pandemic periods (March 2020-February 2021). Results: A total of 1089 patients without a rheumatic disease diagnosis (568 female, 52.2%; median age 10.0 years) were included in this study. The most common complaint for referral was prolonged or recurrent fevers (13.4%) followed by anti-nuclear antibody positivity (13.1%), arthralgia (13.0%), skin findings (7.5%), and the presence of heterozygous mutations in the Mediterranean fever gene (6.9%). During the pandemic year, the number of patients referred for back pain increased significantly (P = .028). A total of 682 of 1089 patients were consulted from other departments in our center (62.6%). Of these, the most frequent consultation request was from general pediatrics (43.6%). The rheumatic disease was excluded in 11.3% of the patients. Conclusion: Prolonged or recurrent fever and anti-nuclear antibody positivity were the most frequent complaints of referrals to a pediatric rheumatology unit in patients who did not have a rheumatic disease. The rate of back pain was more common in children during the pandemic period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In COVID-19 pandemic process, teachers paid effort to use Web 2.0 tools to make their classes interactive and more interesting in distance education. Central institutions have also planned and implemented various inservice trainings to support usage of technology by teachers. In the 2021-2022 academic year, distance education was terminated and face-to-face education was readopted. It can be argued that it is not acceptable to return to learning-teaching process in the classrooms without technology after two years of technology-based progress experienced with all the stakeholders of education. For this reason, it is important to make effective use of various web 2.0 tools in face-to-face education in order for students to experience and internalize technology as a teaching tool. In this context, the aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of social studies preservice teachers as regards the Plickers application that they experienced with secondary school students. Document analysis was used in the study. In this context, the reflective texts were used as a data source where 24 pre- service teachers shared their application experiences in the portfolios they prepared in the Information Technologies in Social Studies course. The obtained data were analyzed by document analysis consisting of review, detailed examination and interpretation steps. As a result of the study, it was determined that the preparation and application processes of Plickers were experienced as “easy” and that its advantages outnumber disadvantages. BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits have been defined in patients with bilateral and unilateral vestibular loss. OBJECTIVE: To investigate cognitive functions in patients with episodic vestibular disorders. METHODS: Nineteen patients with Meniere's disease (MD), 19 patients with vestibular migraine (VM) and 21 age and education matched healthy controls were studied. Mini Mental State Examination assessing global mental status, Reading Span Test and the Stroop Test evaluating working memory, cognitive processing, reading comprehension and attention, Trail Making Test and Benton's Judgment of Line Orientation Test investigating visual processing, visuospatial skills, processing speed were used. Beck depression and anxiety inventories were given to evaluate the emotional status. RESULTS: Cognitive test results of the MD and VM patients were not significantly different from the healthy controls (p > 0.05) as well as Beck depression scores (p = 0.14). Beck anxiety scores showed significant difference (p = 0.003). VM patients had significantly higher scores than the healthy controls (p = 0.002) on pairwise comparisons. The scores of the MD patients did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.15). CONCLUSION: Episodic vestibular disorders like MD and VM without inter-ictal vestibular deficits do not seem to be associated with cognitive impairment. Patients with VM have significantly higher anxiety scores than the healthy controls and MD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mediterranean Sea is considered an aquatic biodiversity hotspot that hosts approximately 782 fish species and 72 of them are categorized as endemic. However, nonnative species introductions that are of natural or human-mediated origin have posed a major threat to the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea which is showing high rates of endemism. Here, we represent historical and recent updated data alien (Champsodon nudivittis, Nemipterus randalli, Pterois miles, Scarus ghobban, Scomberomorus commerson), neonative (Seriola fasciata, Sphoeroides pachygaster) fishes spreading on the Aegean Sea. The existing literature on state-diaspora relations, primarily in the MENA, has mostly focused on how and why home states engage their diasporas, rather than with what consequences. This article investigates how different groups within the diaspora community are affected by the homeland's multi-tiered diaspora engagement policy. I argue that sending states influence select immigrant organizations' mobilization by empowering them in two key ways: They instil self-confidence and collective identity in organization leaders and provide them with capacity-development and know-how support. Yet such differential treatment may become a source of suspicion in host states and cause resentment among the disregarded diaspora groups. The findings draw from extensive fieldwork conducted in France, Germany, and Turkey between 2013 and 2019 and original data derived from interviews, official documents, and news sources. Objective: To investigate the effects of an individualized vestibular rehabilitation (VR) program on balance and gait performance and on self-perceived handicap in a group of vestibular migraine (VM) patients with associated anxiety. Methods: An 8-week prospective clinical trial of a VR program was conducted on 74 VM patients. The effects were evaluated with the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Integration in Balance (mCTSIB), the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), and the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) before and after VR. The Panic Agoraphobic Spectrum Self-Report version (PAS-SR) was used to assess the patients' level of anxiety. Results: DGI and DHI parameters significantly improved after VR (p < 0.05). The fall rates of mCTSIB were significantly decreased on foam with eyes closed (chi-square: 4.934, p = 0.026), and on foam with head back and eyes closed (chi-square: 7.451, p = 0.006). Forty-three (58.1%) of 74 VM patients had panic-anxiety complaints in terms of PAS scores (a score of > 46 points indicates the presence of anxiety). Balance and gait performance as measured by DGI (p = 0.000), DHI (p = 0.000), and mCTSIB (p < 0.05) improved significantly after VR in both groups of VM patients: those with and without anxiety complaints (PAS scores > 46 points and < 46 points, respectively). Conclusion: Even VM patients with anxiety complaints benefited from vestibular exercises, and their imbalance complaints and perceived levels of handicap/disability improved. Individual specific vestibular exercises created with a clinical decision-making process provide functional improvement through vestibular compensation mechanisms. VR should be included in the treatment programs of VM patients with either high or low anxiety levels to improve vestibular function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sea urchin, Diadema setosum, is a poisonous species that originates in the Indo‐Pacific and the Red Sea. Although this species has been recorded in several areas in the Mediterranean Sea, its habitat selection, density, distribution and ecological impacts have not been comprehensively documented to date. This study combined the diving observations (n = 53 sites) and local ecological knowledge (LEK) of SCUBA divers (n = 100) to provide information on the distribution and density of this invasive sea urchin on the Aegean and Levantine coasts of Turkey between September and October 2020. The results indicated that D. setosum was more prevalent along the southern coast of Turkey compared with the western coast, where it is colder. The highest densities of D. setosum were observed in rocky habitats at a depth range of 0–5 m. Moreover, the densities increased with increasing bottom temperatures (up to 150 ind./100 m2). Recent reports from the Levantine and south Aegean coasts highlighted that the densities of D. setosum increased dramatically during the past year. The results of the present study suggested that D. setosum provides shelter for a total of four fish species, including Chromis chromis, Gobius sp., Cheilodipterus novemstriatus and Thalassoma pavo. This species of urchin poses a threat due to its potential grazing and bioerosion effects in the Mediterranean. Thus, future studies should focus on the feeding ecology of D. setosum and the competition with native species that share the same habitat to obtain an improved understanding of the ecological impacts of this invasive species. Although the present study provides the first comprehensive dataset on the density and distribution of this invasive sea urchin for Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean region, we suggest that its population should be monitored for long periods using direct observations, LEK and citizen science. A new smoking behavior recognition algorithm based on a weak supervision fine-grained structure and the EficientDet network is proposed in this study to solve the poor recognition effect and lack of data samples of smoking behavior in complex situations. The proposed algorithm uses the framework of a fine-grained two-level attention model with weak supervision. First, the feature edge of the image block is detected by a structured method, and the edge is screened by non-maximum suppression to form a candidate region block. Smoking behavior can then be recognized effectively by combining the results of the object-level filter for specific objects and the local-level filter for locating discriminant parts. Second, the object-level filter uses an improved EfficientDet network to classify prospective objects and candidate regions with strong features. The present smoking behavior recognition algorithm and coarse- and fine-grained algorithms are compared to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. Experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed algorithm is 93.10%, which is higher than that of the optimal smoking behavior detection algorithm by 1.7%, and the error detection rate is 3.6%. - Abstract
This study aims to determine the attitudes of university students towards the use of social networks for educational purposes and to examine the differentiation of these attitudes by gender, type of education, department, grade point average, the most used social network and the time spent on social networks during the day. This study uses a quantitative research approach using a survey model. The population consists of 534 vocational school students at a state university in the Eastern Anatolia Region in the 2021-2022 academic year. The sample consists of 351 students, 131 female and 220 male, determined by simple random sampling method. "Personal Information Form" and "Attitude Scale Towards the Use of Social Networks for Educational Purposes - ASTUSNEP" developed by Kesici (2018) were used as data collection tools. The analyses results showed that the students' attitudes towards using social networks for educational purposes were in the high-level "very positive" value range. When the means of the sub-dimensions of ASTUSNEP were evaluated, the behavior sub-dimension was in the high "positive" value range, the knowledge sub-dimension was in the very high "very positive" value range, and the emotion sub-dimension was in the "medium" value range. On the other hand, while there were statistically significant differences between students' attitudes towards using social networks for educational purposes and multiple variables (gender, type of education, department, grade point average, most used social network), there was no statistically significant difference between the time spent on social networks during the day. SINGULAR integrals ,FLOW separation ,COULOMB friction - Abstract
Neglecting the friction between the indenter and the thermoelectric layer (TEL), the discontinuous contact problem between the TEL and the rigid base is studied by using elastic theory and integral transformation technology. The external load is applied to the TEL through the rigid base. When the value of the external load λ exceeds the critical load (CL) λ c r , separation occurs along the interface between the TEL and the rigid base. The discontinuous contact problem is transformed into a system of singular integral equations (SIES) by boundary conditions. Numerical results of the contact stress and the separation distance between the TEL and the rigid base are considered by the external load, the specific weight of the TEL and the width of the indenter. The results show that the larger external load and the specific weight of the TEL will cause the separation distance between the TEL and the rigid base to increase. However, the increase in the width of the rigid indenter has the opposite effect on the contact stress between the TEL and the rigid base. The model developed in this article provides guidance for the design and safety and reliability judgment of thermoelectric components in practical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents survey on various techniques used to classify plants and its disease. Classification is concerned with classifying each sample into different classes. Classification is a method of separating a healthy and diseased leaf on its morphological features such as texture, color, shape, pattern and so on. Due to resemblance in the visual properties among plants, sorting and classification are complicated to carry out especially in large area. There are various methods based on image processing techniques and computer vision. Choosing the suitable classification technique is quite difficult as the result varies on different input data. Classification of leaf diseases in plants has wide applications in different fields such as agriculture and biological research. This paper provides a general idea of few existing methods, its pros and cons, state of art of different techniques used by several authors in leaf disease identification and classification such as preprocessing techniques, feature extraction and selection techniques, datasets used, classifiers and performance metrics. Apart from these some challenges and research gaps are identified and their probable solutions are pointed out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TEACHERS' lounges ,SCHOOL facilities ,TEACHER attitudes ,TEACHING ,EDUCATION - Abstract
This study aims to develop a measurement tool that will be used to determine the attitudes of teacher candidates towards the teachers' lounge. In line with this purpose, first of all, the literature on the subject was searched, and at the same time, the opinions of the students studying in the last year of the education faculty teaching programs were taken. At the end of this process, an item pool of 34 items was created for the scale trial form. The scale items prepared through the scale trial form were presented to the expert opinion. Some items were rearranged in line with the opinions of the experts, and an application form consisting of 34 items was prepared. It was applied to a total of 286 students, 221 of whom were female and 65 of whom were male. Validity and reliability analyzes of the scale were made on the data set formed as a result of the application. First of all, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed for construct validity, and as a result of exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), a scale form consisting of 23 items and 3 sub-dimensions was obtained. The three-factor structure of the scale explains 63.49% of the total variance of the scale. The results of the reliability analysis of the scale revealed that the Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient for the overall scale was .95, and the reliability coefficients for the sub-factors were .94, .92, and .79, respectively. It was observed that the t-test results between the scores of the upper-lower 27% groups differed at the p<.001 significance level, and the Spearman-Brown internal consistency coefficient calculated for the two equal halves of the scale had a very high "0.92" value. These values, obtained as a result of the analysis, were interpreted as proof that the scale has the necessary psychometric properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To find out clinical features associated with poor response to treatment in vestibular migraine (VM) VM patients treated with drugs recommended in migraine prophylaxis were included in this multicenter study. Migraine features including type, age of onset of headache and vertigo attacks, attack frequency, intensity, associated symptoms, triggering factors, presence of interictal dizziness/imbalance, anxiety, depression, history of motion sickness, and family history of migraine were noted. Amitriptyline, flunarizine, propranolol, topiramate and venlafaxine were chosen depending on patients' individual requirements. Maximum dose of each drug was tried for 2 months to decide its efficacy. In the case of inefficacy, it was changed with another preventive drug of different class. If there was still no improvement, two drugs of different classes were combined. ≥ 50% reduction in attack frequency and severity in patients using one drug and a combination of two drugs was compared, with patients showing <50% reduction despite combination therapy, regarding their clinical features. The results of 430 VM patients, 65 men and 365 women with a mean age of 42.2 ± 12.2 years (range: 17–74 years), were analyzed. Cutaneous allodynia frequently associated with female sex, comorbid anxiety and depression and interictal dizziness/imbalance enhanced with comorbid anxiety were risk factors for reduced treatment response. Aural fullness might be the clue of impending concomitant Meniere's disease not responding to migraine preventives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: To reveal the prevalence of asymptomatic uterine leiomyomas among gynecologic patients and to evaluate risk factors associated with the presence of leiomyomas. STUDY DESIGN: Two thousand five hundred eighty-three patients aged between 18 and 66 years who presented to the gynecology outpatient clinic of our hospital in January and February 2021 who had an intact uterus and underwent transvaginal ultrasound were included in the study. Patients with symptoms due to fibroids were defined as symptomatic, and those without symptoms were defined as asymptomatic; then two groups were compared in terms of certain variables. The independent risk factors associated with the presence of fibroids were determined using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Leiomyomas were detected in a total of 437 patients with an overall prevalence of 17.2%. Leiomyomas were detected in 12.2% of asymptomatic patients and 27.8% of symptomatic patients (p<0.001). The prevalence of fibroids tended to increase with advancing age and decreased after age 50 years. It was observed that myoma diameter was significantly large (29.5 (6-123) mm and 18 (7-74) mm; p<0.001) and the frequency of multiple myomas was significantly high in symptomatic patients (46.5% vs. 33.6%; p<0.001). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, high body mass index, younger age at menarche, and not using oral contraceptives were associated with the presence of fibroids. CONCLUSION: Approximately half of all leiomyomas, one of the important gynecological health problems of women, are asymptomatic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Halting ventilation during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is implemented to operate in a less bleeding setting. It sustains a better visualization of the operation area and helps to perform the operation much more comfortably. On the other hand, it may lead to a series of postoperative lung complications such as atelectasis and pleural effusion. In this study, we investigated the effects of low tidal volume ventilation on inflammatory cytokines during CPB. Methods: Twenty-eight patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery were included in the study. Operation standards and ventilation protocols were determined and patients were divided into two groups: patients ventilated with low tidal volume and non-ventilated patients. Plasma samples were taken from patients preoperatively, perioperatively from the coronary sinus and postoperatively after CPB. IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α and C5a levels in serum samples were studied with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Results: C5a, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α were similar when compared to the low tidal volume ventilated and non-ventilated groups (P>0.05). Comparing the groups by variables, IL-6 levels were increased during CPB in both groups (P=0.021 and P=0.001), and IL-8 levels decreased in the ventilation group during CPB (P=0.018). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that low tidal volume ventilation may reduce the inflammatory response during CPB. Although the benefit of low tidal volume ventilation in CPB has been shown to decrease postoperative lung complications such as pleural effusion, atelectasis and pneumonia, we still lack more definitive and clear proofs of inflammatory cytokines encountered during CPB. Background: The term "motion sickness" (also called "kinetosis") describes a set of symptoms that occur in association with motion of a person or his or her surroundings, triggering a stress reaction that results in autonomic symptoms. The onset is often insidious, with drowsiness/yawning, dizziness, reduced alertness, and symptoms progress through cold sweating, pallor, excessive salivation, and occasionally headache, to nausea and vomiting with incapacitation that can be severe. Motion sickness usually occurs due to a visuo-vestibular conflict. Part of it is psychological as well as the symptoms of motion sickness are triggered in some people by just reading about it. Method: A cross-sectional study was performed in college going students for six months using the MSSQ-short and the Mini BESTest to assess the susceptibility of motion sickness as well as balance and gait respectively. Conclusion: Balance and gait was found to be significantly affected in people with motion sickness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to develop a measurement tool to identify preschool children's problematic technology use levels and contribute to Turkish literature. The study group included in the exploratory factor analysis was composed of 357 voluntary children in the preschool period. The study group included in the confirmatory factor analysis, proximal validity analysis, item discrimination analysis, and reliability analysis was composed of a total of 402 parents. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to present the factor structure of PTUS-YC. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to test the model obtained with EFA. Item discrimination values obtained as a result of the independent sample t-test was investigated to determine the internal validity of the measurement tool. Furthermore, the correlation values between PTUS-YC items and the relevant factors and the complete measurement tool were calculated, and total item correlation was used to test whether each item served a common purpose. In addition, CR and AVE values were examined in the proximal validity analysis conducted for PTUS-YC. Reliability analysis for PTUS-YC was performed using Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient and McDonald's Omega coefficient methods. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, a 4-factor structure that explained 60.392% of the total variance was obtained: continuity of use, resistance to control, effects on development and deprivation-escape. Based on the results, PTUS-YC was a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to determine preschool children's problematic technology use levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of science theater plays on secondary school students' attitudes towards the subject of science and their views on scientists. The study was conducted with 38 seventh-grade secondary school students over a six-month period. The "Scale of Attitudes Towards the Subject of Science" and the "Opinion Survey About Scientists" were used to collect the quantitative data, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for the analysis of the obtained data. For the collection of the qualitative data, the compositions written by the students and the researcher's observation notes were used, and the obtained data were subjected to inductive content analysis. In the study, it was concluded that the science theater plays were highly effective in changing secondary school students' attitudes towards the subject of science. On the other hand, it was determined that the activities had no effect on the students' views of scientists. The results obtained from the qualitative data reveal the advantages of science theater plays for students, as well as their contribution to students' personal development. The findings were discussed in the light of the literature and recommendations were made for further research in line with the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To cope with students’ problem behaviors, which is a frequently encountered problem within inclusive education implementations, classroom teachers often require some form of in-service training. In considering this issue, the current study aimed to determine the effectiveness of an online problem behavior professional development program (e-ITPDPB) that was explicitly designed for teachers of inclusive education. The study model was the experimental model employing a pretest-posttest control and experimental group design. The study’s participants included 60 primary school teachers who were randomly assigned to the experimental (N = 30) and control (N = 30) groups. The obtained study data were analyzed using independent samples t-test and ANOVA. The e-ITPDPB was found to be effective in decreasing the number of problem behavior reports raised by teachers and the diversity of causes attributed to problem behavior and the increase in the employment of positive coping ways by the teachers. Furthermore, the teachers' perceptions of professional competence improved, as did their positive views regarding inclusive education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growth responses of 'Lapins' sweet cherry cultivar (Prunus avium L.) grafted on 'Gisela 5' and 'Gisela 6' rootstocks was evaluated in drip irrigation conditions in Bistrita Fruit Region, in Northern Transylvania Romania, during 2020-2021, in a high density field trial, trees were trained as spindle bush with 1250 trees/ha density. During the study the following parameters were evaluated, trunk cross section area, volume of the tree crown, leaf area, length of shoots, number of shoots, height of trees, leaf area/fruit, crop load, yield, fruit number/tree, average fruit size and main quality characteristics of the fruits. Preliminary data showed that trees grafted on 'Gisela 6' when compared with 'Gisela 5' proved to be more vigorous when considering trunk cross sectional area and canopy volume indicators. Data showed that generally in both rootstock combinations a high fruit number per tree was observed at 'Lapins' cultivar and fruit size was largely a function of crop load and leaf area: fruit ratio. In order to obtain a good fruit size most probably, crop load of self fertile 'Lapins' cherries on Gisela rootstocks must be regulated by different pruning treatments. Drip irrigation had a crucial influence on the vegetative development of the trees and completed the physiological need of plants mainly in critical summer drought periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents diagnostic criteria for vestibular migraine, jointly formulated by the Committee for Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society and the Migraine Classification Subcommittee of the International Headache Society (IHS). It contains a literature update while the original criteria from 2012 were left unchanged. The classification defines vestibular migraine and probable vestibular migraine. Vestibular migraine was included in the appendix of the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3, 2013 and 2018) as a first step for new entities, in accordance with the usual IHS procedures. Probable vestibular migraine may be included in a later version of the ICHD, when further evidence has accumulated. The diagnosis of vestibular migraine is based on recurrent vestibular symptoms, a history of migraine, a temporal association between vestibular symptoms and migraine symptoms and exclusion of other causes of vestibular symptoms. Symptoms that qualify for a diagnosis of vestibular migraine include various types of vertigo as well as head motion-induced dizziness with nausea. Symptoms must be of moderate or severe intensity. Duration of acute episodes is limited to a window of between 5 minutes and 72 hours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In our study, medium conditions were optimized for percent chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction and drug removal from diclofenac sodium (DFS) solutions. Response surface methodology/central composite design was used for optimization. A. Campestris/Amberlite Styrene–divinylbenzene (XAD-4) biocomposite material was used as adsorbent. Four independent parameters (pH, initial concentration, interaction time and adsorbent amount) were chosen to optimize both % COD reduction and DFS removal. As a result of experiments, maximum 77% COD reduction and maximum 98% DFS removal were obtained at 4 pH, 225 mg/L initial concentration, 36 min and 0.69 adsorbent amount. Scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy devices were used for characterization of adsorbent material. To identify the isotherm for the adsorption mechanism, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Harkins–Jura isotherm equations were examined. The Freundlich isotherm had 96.2% regression coefficient (R
2 ) and was linear, so had better fit compared to the other equations and the adsorption mechanism abided by the Freundlich isotherm. The results show that statistical optimization design was successfully applied to experiments and A. Campestris/Amberlite XAD-4 is an appropriate biocomposite adsorbent with specific affinity for % COD reduction and removal of DFS from aqueous solutions under optimal conditions. Background: Vestibular migraine (VM) is one of the most common causes of vertigo in clinical practice but it is not always easy to make the correct diagnosis. Our aims were to find out how VM patients differ from migraine only (MO) patients, to evaluate co-morbid depression in these two groups and to determine if their disease has an effect on their quality of life. Methods: We studied 50 definite VM and 35 MO patients. Each patient was asked about: age of onset, duration of headaches, presence of aura, headache characteristics, triggering factors, associated features, motion sickness history and family history of migraine. VM patients were also asked about their vertigo attacks and accompanying symptoms. Each patient also completed the following questionnaires: (1) Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS); (2) headache severity with VAS (Visual Analog Scale); (3) Allodynia Symptom Checklist (ASC-12); (4) Beck Depression Inventory (BDI); (5) World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire Short Form-12 (WHOQL-SF12); (6) Activities Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC). VM patients also completed the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). Results: We found that VM patients were more likely than MO patients to be female, post-menopausal, depressed, motion sick, complaining of imbalance and of food-triggered headaches. In contrast, MO patients were more likely than VM patients to have severe headaches and that these can be triggered by certain odors and by noise. Conclusion: Our findings showed differences between VM and MO patients and attention to these differences could help clinicians diagnose, characterize and manage their VM patients. The Lime Basra (Citrus aurantifolia Linn., Rutaceae) plant also known as dried lime, and Limoo Omani, is used both as a spice in meals and as an herbal tea in the treatment of some diseases in the Middle East. It was aimed to determine the biological activity screening of the 70% methanol, ethanol extracts and infusion which were prepared from dried fruits. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH
● ) and 2,2ʹ-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS+● ) radical scavenging activities, ferric reducing activity, cytotoxicity on A 549, MCF 7 and L929 cell lines and α-amylase inhibitory effects were determined. According to the results, 70% methanol extract was more active in antioxidant activity tests and ethanol extract was more active in cytotoxicity tests. Interestingly both 70% methanol and ethanol extracts were found to have potent hypoglycemic activity. The present findings shed light on the fact that it is important to research and scientifically evaluate plants with traditional medicinal use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The low signal-to-noise ratio is a characteristic feature of NMR experiments in the Earth's magnetic field. The main problem of such studies is the ineffectiveness of signal accumulation due to fluctuations of the Earth's magnetic field because of magnetic interferences from laboratory equipment and other magnetic field sources. Taking into account the fact that generally in the Earth's magnetic field, proton-containing liquids have spectra with a strong central line, a relatively simple method has been developed to neutralize the influence of Larmor frequency fluctuations. The NMR signal processing algorithm is described. The home-built NMR-equipment allows us to clearly register the splitting in proton spectra, for example, due to the J-interaction with such nuclei as
29 Si or13 C at their natural abundance (4.7 and 1.1%, respectively). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Pilates training and elastic taping on balance and postural control in patients with early stage Parkinson's Disease (PD). Method: Patients were randomly divided into Pilates, elastic taping, and control (wait list) groups. Pilates training was performed for 6 weeks, twice a week and 60 minutes per session. In elastic taping group, in addition to Pilates training, elastic taping was applied to the upper back twice a week for 6 weeks with the aim of postural correction. In order to evaluate the postural control before and after the training, Berg Balance Scale, Trunk Impairment Scale, the tests of NeuroCom Balance Master performance test device as Limits of stability (LOS), Sit-to Stand, Walk Across and Tandem Walking Tests were performed. Results: The data of 20 patients (6 male in Pilates group, 2 female and 6 male in elastic taping group, 3 female and 3 male in control group) were analyzed. Reaction times in LOS test decreased significantly and walking speed in Walk Across test increased significantly after 6 weeks in Pilates and elastic taping groups. In elastic taping group, the postural sways of Tandem Walk test were decreased significantly and, the rising index in Sitto-Stand test increased significantly after 6 weeks (Wilcoxon Test, p<0.05). Conclusion: We believe that Pilates is a feasible rehabilitation strategy for PD, and it has a remedial effect on the dynamic balance and postural control for these patients. We also think that elastic taping could be applied for supporting the right posture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Creative thinking has played a critical role in a number of fields such as science, technology, economy, and education. Given the necessity of creative thinking in mathematics teaching, it can be argued that teachers are responsible for transforming their students into creative thinkers. In this context, the present study aims to determine pre-service mathematics teachers’ levels of critical thinking tendency and the main as well as interaction effects of demographic variables (i.e., gender, year, and academic achievement) on critical thinking tendency. The study makes use of the survey and causal-comparative designs. The study included 130 pre-service elementary mathematics teachers and used “The Marmara Creative Thinking Tendencies Scale” developed by Özgenel and Çetin (2017) as the data collection tool. Descriptive and two-way analysis of variance were used. The study reported high creative tendency levels of pre-service teacher. Another outcome of the study shows that the variables of gender, year, and academic achievement did not have significant main effect on creative tendency levels of pre-service teachers. Besides, the interaction effect of gender-year and gender-academic achievement on the creative thinking tendency levels of pre-service teachers are not statistically significant. Based on the findings, recommendations for future research and educational implications are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated whether the Science on Stage, a theatre and drama project, taught middle-school students more about the lives and discoveries of great scientists and whether it helped them develop positive views and attitudes towards the science course and scientists. This 8-month study employed an embedded design. The sample consisted of 20 eight graders. Quantitative data were collected using a Scientists Success Test, a Scale of Attitude towards the Science Course, and a Questionnaire of Views on Scientists, and then, were analysed using a one-sample t-test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers, and then, were analysed using inductive content analysis. The Science on Stage helped participants learn more about the lives and discoveries of great scientists but had no impact on their attitudes towards the science course and scientists. It contributed not only to the history of science but also to academic and personal development. It helped participants recognise scientific facts and develop social and academic skills and made them more curious and motivated about science and art. The study discussed the results with reference to the literature and made suggestions for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
