Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will enable a neutrinoless double β decay search in parallel to the main science goal of discovering dark matter particle interactions. We report the expected LZ sensitivity to Xe136 neutrinoless double β decay, taking advantage of the significant (>600 kg) Xe136 mass contained within the active volume of LZ without isotopic enrichment. After 1000 live-days, the median exclusion sensitivity to the half-life of Xe136 is projected to be 1.06×1026 years (90% confidence level), similar to existing constraints. We also report the expected sensitivity of a possible subsequent dedicated exposure using 90% enrichment with Xe136 at 1.06×1027 years.

Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a next-generation dark matter direct detection experiment that will operate 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. Using a two-phase xenon detector with an active mass of 7 tonnes, LZ will search primarily for low-energy interactions with weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are hypothesized to make up the dark matter in our galactic halo. In this paper, the projected WIMP sensitivity of LZ is presented based on the latest background estimates and simulations of the detector. For a 1000 live day run using a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, LZ is projected to exclude at 90% confidence level spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections above 1.4 × 10-48cm2 for a 40 GeV/c2 mass WIMP. \ud Additionally, a 5σ discovery potential is projected, reaching cross sections below the exclusion limits of recent experiments. For spin-dependent WIMP-neutron(-proton) scattering, a sensitivity of 2.3 × 10−43 cm2 (7.1 × 10−42 cm2) for a 40 GeV/c2\ud mass WIMP is expected. With underground installation well underway, LZ is on track for commissioning at SURF in 2020.

Abstract

The purpose of the study. To determine whether it is possible to use passive acoustic thermometry to measure the core temperature of human body regions. Materials and methods. Thermal acoustic radiation was measured by a multichannel acoustic thermograph with a threshold sensitivity of 0.3°С at an integration time of 10 s. A portable computer infrared thermograph with a sensitivity of 0.1°С was used to measure the superficial temperature. Results. Measurements of thermal acoustic radiation of the right hypochondrium of the study subject were carried out to obtain an integral temperature of the liver after intake of sugar. At the same time, blood glucose concentrations were measured. The glucose level increased from 4 to 8 mmol/l within an hour and a half; then it began to decline. The acoustic radiation temperature increased by 2°С with a half an hour delay after the increase in the glucose level. Model calculation showed that the liver temperature increased from 37 to 38°С. Conclusion. It was shown that passive acoustic thermometry can be used to measure the core temperature of different regions of the human body. The proposed method may be useful in the emergency medicine., Цель исследования. Установить возможность использования пассивной акустической термометрии для измерения глубинной температуры участков тела человека. Материалы и методы. Тепловое акустическое излучение измеряли многоканальным акустотермографом с пороговой чувствительностью 0,3°С при времени интегрирования 10 с. Для измерения поверхностной температуры использовали портативный компьютерный инфракрасный термограф с чувствительностью 0,1°С. Результаты исследования. Измерения теплового акустического излучения правого подреберья испытуемого провели, чтобы получить интегральную температуру печени после приема испытуемым сахара. Одновременно проводили измерения концентрации глюкозы в крови. В течение полутора часов содержание глюкозы выросло от 4 до 8 ммоль/л, после чего начало снижаться. С задержкой в полчаса после увеличения концентрации глюкозы измеряемая акустояркостная температура увеличилась на 2°С. Модельный расчет показал, что температура печени при этом увеличилась с 37 до 38°С. Заключение. Показали, что пассивную акустическую термометрию можно использовать для измерения глубинной температуры участков тела человека. Предложенный метод может быть востребован в медицине критических состояний.

Abstract

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the LZ detector to be built at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The LZ dark matter experiment is designed to achieve sensitivity to a WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section of three times ten to the negative forty-eighth square centimeters., 392 pages. Abstract

The design and performance of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) detector is described as of March 2015 in this Conceptual Design Report. LZ is a second-generation dark-matter detector with the potential for unprecedented sensitivity to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) of masses from a few GeV/c2 to hundreds of TeV/c2. With total liquid xenon mass of about 10 tonnes, LZ will be the most sensitive experiment for WIMPs in this mass region by the end of the decade. This report describes in detail the design of the LZ technical systems. Expected backgrounds are quantified and the performance of the experiment is presented. The LZ detector will be located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota. The organization of the LZ Project and a summary of the expected cost and current schedule are given.

145. Carotenoid Antenna Binding and Function in Retinal Proteins

Abstract

Xanthorhodopsin, a proton pump from the eubacterium Salinibacter ruber, is a unique dual chromophore system that contains, in addition to retinal, the carotenoid salinixanthin as a light-harvesting antenna. The key factors affecting binding and function of the antenna were established and examined. The first is the binding of the carotenoid ring near the retinal ring. Substitution of the small glycine with bulky tryptophan in this site eliminates binding. The second factor is the 4-keto group in the carotenoid ring. A close analogue of salinixanthin, salinixanthol, in which the 4-keto group (C=O) is reduced to hydroxyl (C-OH), does not bind. Third, the binding site itself. Another protein capable of carotenoid binding was found. Gloeobacter rhodopsin, was shown to bind salinixanthin and echinenone but not beta-carotene or salinixanthol. Using femtosecond absorption spectroscopy, a large transient electrochromic shift of the salinixanthin band was detected 150 fs after excitation of the retinal chromophore. It indicates that excitation of retinal is accompanied by charge separation and a strong electrostatic field. It partially remains in the first photoproduct K. Thermal conversion of the latter involves at least two substates which were characterized with FTIR spectroscopy. The kinetics of photocycle and proton transport by xanthorhodopsin was examined.

Abstract

The project produced initial characterization of xanthorhodopsin, a novel carotenoid/retinal protein complex from the extremely halophilic eubacterium Salinibacter ruber, which functions as a light-driven proton pump. Its unique feature is a light-harvesting antenna, not found in any other retinal-based pumps. Fluorescence studies showed that 45% of light quanta absorbed by the carotenoid salinixanthin is transferred to retinal and used for transmembrane proton transport to energize ATP synthesis in the cells. The energy transfer occurs from extremely short lived (64 femtosecond) excited state of the carotenoid S2 to the S1 state of the retinal. From spectroscopic and x-ray studies that produced a 1.9 Angstom resolution structure, important information was obtained on the location of the carotenoid in the protein and its interaction with the retinal. The structure also revealed a number of unexpected features in the arrangement of the proton conducting pathways, not seen in the archaeal pumps, bacteriorhodopsin and archaerhodopsin. Particularly significant is a strongly hydrogen bonded Asp-His pair as the counterion to the retinal Schiff base, and a large cleft that extends deep into the protein at the extracellular side. It is likely that these features are common to other bacterial pumps, the proteorhodopsins, which still lack crystallographic information., The original document contains color images.
