The dynamics of the charge-order domains has been investigated in La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4, a prototypical stripe-ordered cuprate, using pulsed current injection. We first identify the regime in which nonthermal effects dominate over simple Joule heating and then demonstrate that, for small enough perturbation, pulsed current injection allows access to nonthermally induced resistive metastable states. The results are consistent with the pinning of the fluctuating charge order, with fluctuations being most pronounced at the charge-order onset temperature. The nonequilibrium effects are revealed only when the transition is approached from the charge-ordered phase. Our experiment establishes pulsed current injection as a viable and effective method for probing the charge-order dynamics in various other materials.

We demonstrate that long time-scale events in atomistic ion-surface bombardment simulations can be essential and need to be accounted for., Hydrogen–graphite interactions are relevant to a wide variety of applications, ranging from astrophysics to fusion devices and nano-electronics. In order to shed light on these interactions, atomistic simulation using Molecular Dynamics (MD) has been shown to be an invaluable tool. It suffers, however, from severe time-scale limitations. In this work we apply the recently developed Collective Variable-Driven Hyperdynamics (CVHD) method to hydrogen etching of graphite for varying inter-impact times up to a realistic value of 1 ms, which corresponds to a flux of ∼1020 m–2 s–1. The results show that the erosion yield, hydrogen surface coverage and species distribution are significantly affected by the time between impacts. This can be explained by the higher probability of C–C bond breaking due to the prolonged exposure to thermal stress and the subsequent transition from ion- to thermal-induced etching. This latter regime of thermal-induced etching – chemical erosion – is here accessed for the first time using atomistic simulations. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that accounting for long time-scales significantly affects ion bombardment simulations and should not be neglected in a wide range of conditions, in contrast to what is typically assumed.

A ventricular septal defect is the most common congenital cardiac abnormality encountered in infants and children. Many of them survive through adulthood before diagnosis. Two-thirds of the cases involve the membranous part of the septum. In the absence of an interventricular shunt or concomitant cardiac surgery, guidelines for surgical intervention or resection of isolated aneurysms of the membranous septum are not well established. In this report, we discuss a multi-imaging modality approach for the diagnosis and assessment of membranous ventricular septal aneurysms and review the experts' consensuses for follow-up and treatment strategies.

Superhydrophobic coatings were prepared using 3-(heptafluoroisopropoxy)- propyltrimethoxysilane (HFIP-TMS) treated diatomaceous earth (DE) particles with high molecular mass polystyrene or poly(vinyl acetate) as polymer binders. DE is a highly hydrophilic material and treatment of the DE with HFIP-TMS turned it into superhydrophobic diatomaceous earth (HFIP-DE). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the amount of grafted fluorosilane on the surface of the DE particles. The results showed that approximately 1.8% of HFIP-TMS grafted onto the surface of DE particles resulted in superhydrophobicity with contact angles as high as 164° for the particles themselves and also in coatings. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to confirm the presence of HFIP-TMS on the surface of DE particles. The development of the hydrophobicity in the coatings with either polystyrene (PS) or poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as binders was followed as a function of the particle loading using contact angle measurements and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that for these model DE-binder systems, the contact angles of the coatings were independent of the polymers used as long as the particle loading was greater than a minimum amount (∼40% treated DE particles). It was also found that more treated DE particles moved to the air interface as the particle loadings in the coatings increased and then levelled off.

The heat capacities of very small adsorbed amounts of poly(methyl methacrylate) on high-surface-area silica (Cab-O-Sil) were measured using temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) using a quasi-isothermal method and interpreted via different models. The composition-dependent heat capacities of the adsorbed samples were measurably less than those predicted with a simple mixture model. A two-state model, composed of tightly and loosely bound polymer, fits the data better with heat capacities of the tightly bound polymer found to be 70-80% (glassy region) and 70-94% (rubbery region) of that of the bulk polymer at the same temperatures. The amount of tightly bound polymer was estimated to be about 1.2 mg/m2 (about 1 nm thickness) in both the glassy and rubbery regions, consistent with heat flow measurements. The data sets were also extensive enough to model them with a more detailed layered gradient model, including a nonzero heat capacity for the polymer at zero adsorbed amount, which increased based on an exponential growth function to bulk polymer value of the heat capacity away from the surface. More importantly, this gradient model mimicked the experimental dependence on adsorbed amounts in the tightly bound adsorbed amount region (approximately 1 mg/m2). This model provided, for the first time, an experimental estimate of the heat capacity of the polymer adsorbed closest to the surface. The fractional heat capacity of the adsorbed polymer closest to the silica surface, relative to bulk polymer, increased with temperature from 0.3 (well below) to 0.8 (well above the bulk Tg). It was also possible to estimate the exponential growth parameter of the development from the initial heat capacities to the bulk heat capacity as 0.4 to 0.6 mg/m2, identifying a distance scale (0.3 to 0.5 nm) consistent with the notion of a transition from tightly bound to loosely bound polymer.

T cells in chronic viral infections are featured by premature aging with accelerated telomere erosion, but the mechanisms underlying telomere attrition remain unclear. Here, we employed human CD4 T cells treated with KML001 (a telomere-targeting drug) as a model to investigate the role of telomere integrity in remodeling T cell senescence. We demonstrated that KML001 could inhibit cell proliferation, cytokine production, and promote apoptosis via disrupting telomere integrity and DNA repair machineries. Specifically, KML001-treated T cells increased dysfunctional telomere-induced foci (TIF), DNA damage marker γH2AX, and topoisomerase cleavage complex (TOPcc) accumulation, leading to telomere attrition. Mechanistically, KML001 compromised telomere integrity by inhibiting telomeric repeat binding factor 2 (TRF2), telomerase, topoisomerase I and II alpha (Top1/2a), and ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase activities. Importantly, these KML001-induced telomeric DNA damage and T cell senescent phenotype and machineries recapitulated our findings in patients with clinical HCV or HIV infection in that their T cells were also senescent with short telomeres and thus more vulnerable to KML001-induced apoptosis. These results shed new insights on the T cell aging network that is critical and essential in protecting chromosomal telomeres from unwanted DNA damage and securing T cell survival during cell crisis upon genomic insult.

The origin of the weak insulating behavior of the resistivity, i.e. \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\rho }_{xx}\propto {\mathrm{ln}}\,(1/T)$$\end{document}ρxx∝ln(1/T), revealed when magnetic fields (H) suppress superconductivity in underdoped cuprates has been a longtime mystery. Surprisingly, the high-field behavior of the resistivity observed recently in charge- and spin-stripe-ordered La-214 cuprates suggests a metallic, as opposed to insulating, high-field normal state. Here we report the vanishing of the Hall coefficient in this field-revealed normal state for all \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$T\, The Hall effect has been used as a probe of the normal state of cuprates, when superconductivity is supressed by a magnetic field. Here, the authors report the vanishing of the Hall coefficient at high magnetic field in cuprates with stripe order and interpret it as a signature of the stripe-ordered phase.

The current spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) management strategy relies on routine application of insecticides during the fruit ripening and harvesting period. The amount and frequency of insecticide spray needed to maintain continuous protection of fruits may depend on a variety of factors including the level of rainfall. Studies were conducted to determine the effects of simulated rainfall (0, 12.5, 25 and 37.5 mm) and adjuvant – Nu Film (with and without) on the residual efficacy of commonly used insecticides against D. suzukii in blueberries during the fruiting season of 2014 and 2015. Spray applications were made using an air-assisted backpack (2014) or airblast (2015) sprayer. Insecticide spray residues were allowed to dry for ∼2 h before simulated rainfalls were applied using central pivot irrigation system. Semi-field bioassays were conducted to assess mortality at 1, 3 and 7 days after treatment (DAT). Results showed that simulated rainfall caused a significant reduction in D. suzukii mortality in all chemical treatments, particularly at 1 and 3 DAT in the 2014 study, and at 1 DAT in the 2015 study. In general, higher rainfall resulted in lower mortality in 2014, however such a clear trend was not observed in 2015. Addition of adjuvant, Nu Film 17, significantly increased mortality at 3 DAT in the zeta-cypermethrin treatment with 25 mm of simulated rainfall (2014). In 2015, the addition of Nu Film P significantly increased mortality at 1 DAT in the spinetoram and spinosad treatments with 12.5 mm, and in the malathion treatment with 25 mm of simulated rainfall. These results suggest that although frequent rainfall incidents increase the need for more frequent spray of insecticides, addition of adjuvants helps to prolong the residual efficacy of some insecticides.

Describing desiccation stages based on the physical appearance of termites has not been evaluated previously. Formosan subterranean termites were studied to determine the rate of water loss, singly and in groups, in the laboratory. The stages of water loss are described based on changes in physical appearance and percent total body water loss evaluated at 2- to 8-h time intervals up to 32 h. Workers in groups lost water slower than individual worker trials. Weight loss was linear over time for worker groups and individuals, as was individual soldier only trials. Water loss in individual workers was significantly faster than in soldiers. Three physical stages of desiccation are described for living workers: (I) curling of antennae, (II) on back but with assistance able to right themselves and walk, and (III) unable to get off back; and two stages for living soldiers (II and III). Recovery was determined from termites in a second trial by transferring stage I, II, and III individuals from open, dry Petri dishes to those with moist filter paper at 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 24, 26 and 28 h. After 12 h on moist filter paper, stage I workers had a 83% recovery rate, stage II had a 33%, and stage III had a 7% recovery. Soldiers had a 56% recovery at stage II and was similar to the recovery of workers at stage III. Most termites that reached stage III were destined to die.

Although our previous study showed that clay caused aggregation and particle transport behavior of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus, it is not known whether clay is preferred by C. formosanus as a substrate to live in and for bio-structure construction. In the present study, first a 24 h two-choice test was conducted to test the preference of termites to sand versus clay, both with 70 % water saturation. Significantly more termites aggregated on clay from 10 min after release on, and significantly longer tunnels were observed under clay blocks compared to sand. Two-choice tests with a 2-weeks duration were then conducted at three water saturation levels. Results showed that at 70 % saturation, a significantly higher percentage of termites aggregated in clay as compared to sand, and significantly more clay particles were deposited for shelter tube construction. At 30 and 50 % saturation however, no difference in termite aggregation was observed between clay and sand, and no shelter tubes were constructed. Our study shows that only clay with high moisture is preferred by C. formosanus. The water retention ability and physical properties of clay favor bio-structure construction.

Termites were the first animal to form societies. Two hundred million years of evolution provide for a multitude of innate social behaviors that can be experimentally dissected. These fine-tuned patterns of behavior are especially interesting when observing group decision making in the panic mode. In this study, we examined behavioral patterns of termites under panic conditions to gain insight into how an escape flow self-organizes. One hundred worker and 10 soldier Coptotermes formosanus were released into agar plates. After a disturbance was created most workers followed each other and ran along the wall of dishes, thus forming a unidirectional escape flow, whereas soldiers showed a significantly higher frequency of moving to the center of the arena or on periphery of the escape flow as compared to workers. Agonistic behavior was usually observed as soldiers moved to center or periphery. This is the first report on the behavioral repertoire of termites when panicked, with details on the behavioral polymorphism of workers and soldiers during an escape.
