We introduce the new Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) daily and monthly level-3 product of total column ozone (O3), total and tropospheric column nitrogen dioxide (NO2), total column water vapour, total column bromine oxide (BrO), total column formaldehyde (HCHO), and total column sulfur dioxide (SO2) (daily products https://doi.org/10.15770/EUM_SAF_AC_0048, AC SAF, 2023a; monthly products https://doi.org/10.15770/EUM_SAF_AC_0049, AC SAF, 2023b). The GOME-2 level-3 products aim to provide easily translatable and user-friendly data sets to the scientific community for scientific progress as well as to satisfy public interest. The purpose of this paper is to present the theoretical basis as well as the verification and validation of the GOME-2 daily and monthly level-3 products. The GOME-2 level-3 products are produced using the overlapping area-weighting method. Details of the gridding algorithm are presented. The spatial resolution of the GOME-2 level-3 products is selected based on the sensitivity study. The consistency of the resulting level-3 products among three GOME-2 sensors is investigated through time series of global averages, zonal averages, and bias. The accuracy of the products is validated by comparison to ground-based observations. The verification and validation results show that the GOME-2 level-3 products are consistent with the level-2 data. Small discrepancies are found among three GOME-2 sensors, which are mainly caused by the differences in the instrument characteristic and level-2 processor. The comparison of GOME-2 level-3 products to ground-based observations in general shows very good agreement, indicating that the products are consistent and fulfil the requirements to serve the scientific community and general public.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a fatal human cancer in part because GBM stem cells are resistant to therapy and recurrence is inevitable. Previously, we demonstrated Zika virus (ZIKV) targets GBM stem cells and prevents death of mice with gliomas. Here, we evaluated the immunological basis of ZIKV-mediated protection against GBM. Introduction of ZIKV into the brain tumor increased recruitment of CD8+ T and myeloid cells to the tumor microenvironment. CD8+ T cells were required for ZIKV-dependent tumor clearance because survival benefits were lost with CD8+ T cell depletion. Moreover, while anti-PD-1 antibody monotherapy moderately improved tumor survival, when coadministered with ZIKV, survival increased. ZIKV-mediated tumor clearance also resulted in durable protection against syngeneic tumor rechallenge, which also depended on CD8+ T cells. To address safety concerns, we generated an immune-sensitized ZIKV strain, which was effective alone or in combination with immunotherapy. Thus, oncolytic ZIKV treatment can be leveraged by immunotherapies, which may prompt combination treatment paradigms for adult patients with GBM.

Objetivo:este estudo teve como objetivo identificar as percepções de estudantes e docentes universitários da área da saúde sobre a morte e a finitude da vida, após participarem de uma atividade do tipo “Death Café”. Método: pesquisa descritiva, de abordagem clínico-qualitativa, realizada com 17 estudantes universitários e 6 professores em que se empregou a análise de conteúdo como método da análise de dados. Os resultados foram discutidos a partir do referencial da logoterapia. Resultados: emergiram quatro categorias: Qualidade de vida e morte, Morte e transcedentalidade, Preferências de fim de vida e Quebrando tabus. Conclusão: evidenciou-se uma mudança na compreensão dos participantes sobre o sentido da vida e da morte ao final da atividade proposta.

Wheat lodging is a serious problem affecting grain yield, plant health, and grain quality. Addressing the lodging issue in wheat is a desirable task in breeding programs. Precise detection of lodging levels during wheat screening can aid in selecting lines with resistance to lodging. Traditional approaches to phenotype lodging rely on manual data collection from field plots, which are slow and laborious, and can introduce errors and bias. This paper presents a framework called ‘LodgeNet,’ that facilitates wheat lodging detection. Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Deep Learning (DL), LodgeNet improves traditional methods of detecting lodging with more precision and efficiency. Using a dataset of 2000 multi-spectral images of wheat plots, we have developed a novel image registration technique that aligns the different bands of multi-spectral images. This approach allows the creation of comprehensive RGB images, enhancing the detection and classification of wheat lodging. We have employed advanced image enhancement techniques to improve image quality, highlighting the important features of wheat lodging detection. We combined three color enhancement transformations into two presets for image refinement. The first preset, ‘Haze & Gamma Adjustment,’ minimize atmospheric haze and adjusts the gamma, while the second, ‘Stretching Contrast Limits,’ extends the contrast of the RGB image by calculating and applying the upper and lower limits of each band. LodgeNet, which relies on the state-of-the-art YOLOv8 deep learning algorithm, could detect and classify wheat lodging severity levels ranging from no lodging (Class 1) to severe lodging (Class 9). The results show the mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.952% @0.5 and 0.641% @0.50-0.95 in classifying wheat lodging severity levels. LodgeNet promises an efficient and automated high-throughput solution for real-time crop monitoring of wheat lodging severity levels in the field.

In the recent past, there has been an increase in the use of semiconductor nanostructures that convert solar energy to electrical energy. This has encouraged the development of better and more efficient solar cells (SCs). Numerous investigations have been conducted into synthesizing novel semiconductor materials and tuning the electronic properties based on the shape, size, composition, and assembly of the quantum dots to improve hybrid assemblies. Recent studies that are determining the prospects of quantum dot SCs can form the basis for improving photovoltaic efficiency. Here, we have reviewed studies that investigated the sensitization methods for fabricating highly efficient SCs. We also discussed some examples that would help other researchers who want to sensitize quantum dot (QD) SCs. Thereafter, we analyzed the main and popular strategies that can be used for sensitizing the QD SCs within the limitations, advantages, and prospects of fabricating high-efficiency and stable QDs. During this work, we offered strong technical support and a theoretical basis for improving the industrial applications of QD. In addition, we provide a reference that can inspire other researchers who aim to improve the performance of SCs.

Abstract Plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria and other soil bacteria have the potential to improve soil hydro‐physical properties and processes through the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). However, the mechanisms by which EPS mediates changes in soil properties and processes remain incompletely understood, partly due to variations in EPS composition produced under different environmental conditions. In this study, we investigated the influence of different bacterial traits on intrinsic soil properties and processes of evaporation and infiltration using sand treated with the wild‐type Bacillus subtilis variant (UD1022) and its two mutant variants, eps−–tasA− and srfAC−. The eps−–tasA− mutant suppresses EPS production through alterations in the eps and tasA genes, while the srfAC− mutant lacks the gene for surfactin production. Experimental results confirmed that the solution viscosity of the eps−–tasA− mutant was the lowest and the solution surface tension of the srfAC− mutant was the highest among the three tested bacteria strains. The distinct intrinsic properties of EPS produced by these bacterial strains resulted in varied hydro‐physical responses in the treated sand. Key influences included modifications in wettability, hydraulic decoupling (or mixed wettability), and aggregation, which collectively led to reduced evaporation rates and heterogeneous water distribution during infiltration in the bacteria‐treated sands. Our findings advance the understanding of the role bacterial EPS play in vadose zone hydrology and offer insights for the development of sustainable strategies for increasing water retention, supporting crop production in arid regions, and facilitating land restoration.

Background and Aims: Increased burden of diabetes in India has resulted in a spurt in the number of patients with diabetes posted for surgeries. The paucity of national guidelines can lead to marked practice variations in the peri-operative management of diabetes. This survey intends to discern current peri-operative practices among anesthesiologists working in medical colleges, tertiary care government, and private health care institutes of the country. Material and Methods: An anonymous online survey comprising of 25 closed-ended questions was conducted using Google Forms® and disseminated through social media, emails, and messaging platforms. The questionnaire dealt primarily with the peri-operative management of diabetes in patients scheduled for elective surgery. The survey was conducted over a period of 1 month and targeted anesthesia resident trainees with more than 1-year experience, senior residents, and consultants working in India. Results: Statistically significant difference was observed between the three types of health facilities with respect to prior evaluation for diabetes (P = 0.007), prioritizing operative list (P = 0.006), hospital encouragement of day care surgery (P < 0.001), glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1c) level >8.5 for postponement of surgery (P < 0.05), insulin infusion preference (P < 0.001), hourly intra-operatively capillary blood glucose (CBG) assessment (P = 0.021), and avoiding peri-operative use of Ringer's lactate (RL) (P = 0.025). Conclusion: This survey primarily highlights the lack of prioritizing the operative list, early discontinuation of metformin, and reduced tendency to consider diabetics for day care surgeries.

The presence of Kochia weed is harmful to crop production. It can grow well in harsh conditions and is resistant to common herbicides like glyphosate. It causes stress to crops and spreads quickly, forming large patches. Early detection of Kochia is crucial for its effective control. However, it is challenging to detect Kochia due to its close resemblance with early-stage crops. As Kochia seeds are water and air-borne, these can also spread in the field from neighbouring farms. Therefore, Kochia needs to be managed both at the field as well as regional levels. Currently, object-based detection methods are used for Kochia detection at the field level, but there is still a lack of literature on mapping Kochia at a regional level. Our research proposes a methodology for accurately detecting, localizing and quantifying Kochia plants in fields using high-resolution RGB imagery. We also explore the potential of detecting Kochia patches at a regional level using satellite imagery. Our approach uses semantic segmentation techniques to process geotagged RGB images, allowing us to identify and quantify individual Kochia plants in the field. To ensure accurate detection, we have established a minimum Kochia density threshold based on the density of Kochia in RGB images. This threshold enables us to distinguish the spectral signature of satellite imagery pixels containing a high density of Kochia. We label the satellite imagery based on the geo-locations where Kochia density exceeds the threshold value. Our method has a 99% accuracy rate in detecting Kochia patches using multi-spectral satellite imagery with a density threshold of 40%. The semantic segmentation model trained on RGB imagery for in-field mapping has a mean intersection over union value of up to 0.8606. These results suggest pixel-level Kochia segmentation of satellite imagery can be performed more accurately if a pixel has more than 40% Kochia mix. Our study highlights the potential of using high-resolution RGB imagery and satellite data at the farm and regional levels for effective Kochia management. Detecting Kochia early and accurately can help prevent crop damage and ensure successful crop production.

Soil surface texture classification is a critical aspect of agriculture and soil science that affects various soil properties, such as water-holding capacity and soil nutrient retention. However, existing methods for soil texture classification rely on soil images taken under controlled conditions, which are not scalable for high spatiotemporal mapping of soil texture and fail to reflect real-world challenges and variations. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel, scalable, and high spatial resolution soil surface texture classification process that employs image processing, texture-enhancing filters, and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify soil images captured under Uncontrolled Field Conditions (UFC). The proposed process involves a series of steps for improving soil image analysis. Initially, image segmentation is utilized to eliminate non-soil pixels and prepare the images for further processing. Next, the segmented output is divided into smaller tiles to isolate relevant soil pixels. Then, high-frequency filtering is introduced to enhance the texture of the images. Our research has shown that the Gabor filter is more effective than Local Binary Patterns (LBP) for this purpose. By creating four distinct Gabor filters, we can enhance specific, hidden patterns within the soil images. Finally, the split and enhanced images are used to train CNN classifiers for optimal analysis. We evaluate the performance of the proposed framework using different metrics and compare it to existing state-of-the-art soil texture classification frameworks. Our proposed soil texture classification process improves performance. We employed various CNN architectures in our proposed process for comparison purposes. Inception v3 produces the highest accuracy of 85.621%, an increase of 12% compared to other frameworks. With applications in precision agriculture, soil management, and environmental monitoring, the proposed novel methodology has the potential to offer a dependable and sustainable tool for classifying soil surface texture using low-cost ground imagery acquired under UFC.

Background: Birth asphyxia is a lack of blood flow or gas exchange to or from the fetus in the period immediately before, during, or after the birth process. Birth asphyxia can result in profound systemic and neurologic sequelae due to decreased blood flow and/or oxygen to the developing fetus or infant. Birth asphyxia is one of the most common causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity globally. Aims and Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the importance of cranial Doppler as investigation tool for the early prognostic marker of babies with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in short term. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was carried out in a tertiary care teaching hospital. The present study includes 50 newborns, out of which 30 newborns admitted with birth asphyxia were considered as a case, while 20 healthy term newborns were taken as control. Transcranial Doppler of middle cerebral artery (MCA) was done on day 1 of life. They were followed up at discharge for neuromotor outcome by Hammersmith Neonatal neurological examination (HNNE). Knowledge of the impact of sleep problems in the periconceptional period is scarce. Since this period is the most sensitive time window for embryonic and placental development, we aim to study the impact of maternal sleep problems in the periconceptional period on both mother and offspring. We systematically searched various databases up until September 2021 for studies reporting on maternal sleep in the periconceptional period and any outcome in mother and offspring. We included observational studies describing maternal sleep problems in the periconceptional period and associations with either maternal and/or offspring outcomes. The search produced 8596 articles, of which we selected 27 studies. Some associations were found between sleep problems and lower fertility, more hypertensive disorders, more mood disorders in mothers, higher risk of preterm birth and low birth weight, and more sleep and behavior problems in offspring, with associations with maternal mood disorders being most consistent. This systematic review shows that maternal sleep problems in the periconceptional period are associated with a higher risk of various adverse outcomes in both mother and offspring, although not consistently. It shows that good sleep during pregnancy is crucial, starting as early as before conception, especially for maternal mood. Therefore, it is important for clinicians to pay attention to sleep problems in the periconceptional period and provide adequate treatment for potential sleep problems, even before pregnancy.

This study analyses the variability and trends of ultraviolet-B (UV-B, wavelength 280–320 nm) radiation that can cause DNA damage. The variability and trends caused by climate change due to enhanced greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations. The analysis is based on DNA-active irradiance, total ozone, total cloud cover, and surface albedo calculations with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts – Hamburg (ECHAM)/Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) chemistry–climate model (CCM) free-running simulations following the RCP 6.0 climate scenario for the period 1960–2100. The model output is evaluated with DNA-active irradiance ground-based measurements, satellite SBUV (v8.7) total-ozone measurements, and satellite MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra cloud cover data. The results show that the model reproduces the observed variability and change in total ozone, DNA-active irradiance, and cloud cover for the period 2000–2018 quite well according to the statistical comparisons. Between 50∘ N–50∘ S, the DNA-damaging UV radiation is expected to decrease until 2050 and to increase thereafter, as was shown previously by Eleftheratos et al. (2020). This change is associated with decreases in the model total cloud cover and negative trends in total ozone after about 2050 due to increasing GHGs. The new study confirms the previous work by adding more stations over low latitudes and mid-latitudes (13 instead of 5 stations). In addition, we include estimates from high-latitude stations with long-term measurements of UV irradiance (three stations in the northern high latitudes and four stations in the southern high latitudes greater than 55∘). In contrast to the predictions for 50∘ N–50∘ S, it is shown that DNA-active irradiance will continue to decrease after the year 2050 over high latitudes because of upward ozone trends. At latitudes poleward of 55∘ N, we estimate that DNA-active irradiance will decrease by 8.2 %±3.8 % from 2050 to 2100. Similarly, at latitudes poleward of 55∘ S, DNA-active irradiance will decrease by 4.8 % ± 2.9 % after 2050. The results for the high latitudes refer to the summer period and not to the seasons when ozone depletion occurs, i.e. in late winter and spring. The contributions of ozone, cloud, and albedo trends to the DNA-active irradiance trends are estimated and discussed.

Abstract Background Defining interactions of bacteria in the rhizosphere (encompassing the area near and on the plant root) is important to understand how they affect plant health. Some rhizosphere bacteria, including plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) engage in the intraspecies communication known as quorum sensing (QS). Many species of Gram-negative bacteria use extracellular autoinducer signal molecules called N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) for QS. Other rhizobacteria species, including PGPRs, can interfere with or disrupt QS through quorum quenching (QQ). Current AHL biosensor assays used for screening and identifying QS and QQ bacteria interactions fail to account for the role of the plant root. Methods Medicago spp. seedlings germinated on Lullien agar were transferred to soft-agar plates containing the broad-range AHL biosensor Agrobacterium tumefaciens KYC55 and X-gal substrate. Cultures of QS and QQ bacteria as well as pure AHLs and a QQ enzyme were applied to the plant roots and incubated for 3 days. Results We show that this expanded use of an AHL biosensor successfully allowed for visualization of QS/QQ interactions localized at the plant root. KYC55 detected pure AHLs as well as AHLs from live bacteria cultures grown directly on the media. We also showed clear detection of QQ interactions occurring in the presence of the plant root. Conclusions Our novel tri-trophic system using an AHL biosensor is useful to study QS interspecies interactions in the rhizosphere.

Abstract The aim of this study is to acquire a deeper understanding of the response mechanism that is associated with the formation of CdS thin films. We presented an effective and new hybrid sensitisation technique, which involved the 1-step linker between the related chemical bath deposition (CBD) process and the traditional doping method during CBD for synthesising high-quality, CdS thin films. The mechanism for the combined synthesis of the films is also describes. CdS films were electrostatically bonded to soda-lime glass, causing the formation of the intermediate complexes [Cd(NH3)4]2+, which aided in the collision of these complexes with a soda-lime glass slide. In the one-step fabrication technique, 3-Mercaptopropionic Acid (MPA) was employed as a second source of sulphur ions and a linker molecule. Optical studies showed that the bandgap ranged between (2.26–2.52) eV. CdS + MPA films exhibited a uniform distribution of spherical molecules based on their morphological properties. After annealing, this approach significantly altered the electrical characteristics of CdS films. The CdS + MPA films displayed the highest carrier concentration whereas the CdS + Ag + MPA films exhibited the lowest resistivity, with a jump of 3 orders of magnitude.

ARID1A is an epigenetic regulator mutated in approximately 5% of non-hypermutated colorectal cancer tumors, however, its relationship with treatment response remains to be explored. Here, the authors suggest that ARID1A mutations may confer intrinsic and acquired resistance to cetuximab treatment.

BackgroundWomen with a low socioeconomic status often have a vulnerable health status due to an accumulation of health-deteriorating factors such as poor lifestyle behaviors, including inadequate nutrition, mental stressors, and impaired health literacy and agency, which puts them at an unnecessary high risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Adequately preparing for pregnancy through preconception care (PCC) uptake and lifestyle improvement can improve these outcomes. We hypothesize that nudging is a successful way of encouraging engagement in PCC. A nudge is a behavioral intervention that changes choice behavior through influencing incentives. The mobile health (mHealth) app–based loyalty program Pregnant Faster aims to reward women in an ethically justified way and nudges to engage in pregnancy preparation by visiting a PCC consultation. ObjectiveHere, we first describe the process of the cocreation of the mHealth app Pregnant Faster that aims to increase engagement in pregnancy preparation by women with a vulnerable health status. Second, we describe the cohort study design to assess the feasibility of Pregnant Faster. MethodsThe content of the app is based on the eHealth lifestyle coaching program Smarter Pregnancy, which has proven to be effective in ameliorating preconceptional lifestyle behaviors (folic acid, vegetables, fruits, smoking, and alcohol) and an interview study pertaining to the preferences of the target group with regard to an mHealth app stimulating PCC uptake. For moral guidance on the design, an ethical framework was developed based on the bioethical principles of Beauchamp and Childress. The app was further developed through iterative cocreation with the target group and health care providers. For 4 weeks, participants will engage with Pregnant Faster, during which opportunities will arise to earn coins such as reading informative blogs and registering for a PCC consultation. Coins can be spent on small fun rewards, such as folic acid, fruits, and mascara. The shortwave downward solar irradiance (SDR) is an important factor that drives climate processes and energy production and can affect all living organisms. Observations of SDR at different locations around the world with different environmental characteristics have been used to investigate its long-term variability and trends at different time scales. Periods of positive trends are referred to as brightening periods and of negative trends as dimming periods. In this study we have used 30 years of pyranometer data in Thessaloniki, Greece, to investigate the variability of SDR under three types of sky conditions (clear-, cloudy- and all-sky). The clear-sky data were identified by applying a cloud screening algorithm. We have found a positive trend of 0.38%/year for all-sky, ∼0.1%/year for clear-sky, and 0.41%/year for cloudy conditions. The consistency of these trends, their seasonal variability, and the effect of the solar zenith angle have also been investigated. Under all three sky categories, the SDR trend is stronger in winter, with 0.7, 0.4, and 0.76%/year, respectively, for all-, clear-, and cloudy-sky conditions. The next larger seasonal trends are in autumn—0.42 and 0.19%/year, for all and cloudy skies, respectively. The rest of the seasonal trends are significant smaller, close to zero, with a negative values in summer, for clear and cloudy skies. The SDR trend is increasing with increasing solar zenith angle, except under cloudy skies, where the trend is highly variable and close to zero. Finally, we discuss shorter-term variations in SDR anomalies by examining the patterns of the cumulative sums of monthly anomalies from the climatological mean, both before and after removing the long-term trend.

PurposeWe report the final, protocol-specified analysis of overall survival (OS) in GOG-0218, a phase III, randomized trial of bevacizumab in women with newly diagnosed ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal carcinoma.MethodsA total of 1,873 women with incompletely resected stage III to IV disease were randomly assigned 1:1:1 to six 21-day cycles of intravenous carboplatin (area under the concentration v time curve 6) and paclitaxel (175 mg/m2) versus chemotherapy plus concurrent bevacizumab (15 mg/kg, cycles 2 to 6) versus chemotherapy plus concurrent and maintenance bevacizumab (cycles 2 to 22). Inclusion criteria included a Gynecologic Oncology Group performance status of 0 to 2 and no history of clinically significant vascular events or evidence of intestinal obstruction. OS was analyzed in the intention-to-treat population. A total of 1,195 serum and/or tumor specimens were sequenced for BRCA1/2 and damaging mutations in homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes. Intratumoral microvessel density was studied using CD31 immunohistochemistry.ResultsMedian follow-up was 102.9 months. Relative to control (n = 625), for patients receiving bevacizumab-concurrent (n = 625), the hazard ratio (HR) of death was 1.06 (95% CI, 0.94 to 1.20); for bevacizumab-concurrent plus maintenance (n = 623), the HR was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.85 to 1.09). Disease-specific survival was not improved in any arm. No survival advantage was observed after censoring patients who received bevacizumab at crossover or as second line. Median OS for stage IV bevacizumab-concurrent plus maintenance was 42.8 v 32.6 months for stage IV control (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.59 to 0.95). Relative to wild type, the HR for death for BRCA1/2 mutated carcinomas was 0.62 (95% CI, 0.52 to 0.73), and for non-BRCA1/2 HRR, the HR was 0.65 (95% CI, 0.51 to 0.85). BRCA1/2, HRR, and CD31 were not predictive of bevacizumab activity.ConclusionNo survival differences were observed for patients who received bevacizumab compared with chemotherapy alone. Testing for BRCA1/2 mutations and homologous recombination deficiency is essential.

ObjectiveCongenital heart disease (CHD) is the most frequent birth defect worldwide. The number of adult patients with CHD, now referred to as ACHD, is increasing with improved surgical and treatment interventions. However the mechanisms whereby ACHD predisposes patients to heart dysfunction are still unclear. ACHD is strongly associated with metabolic syndrome, but how ACHD interacts with poor modern lifestyle choices and other comorbidities, such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, is mostly unknown.MethodsWe used a newly characterized mouse genetic model of ACHD to investigate the consequences and the mechanisms associated with combined obesity and ACHD predisposition. Metformin intervention was used to further evaluate potential therapeutic amelioration of cardiac dysfunction in this model.ResultsACHD mice placed under metabolic stress (high fat diet) displayed decreased left ventricular ejection fraction. Comprehensive physiological, biochemical, and molecular analysis showed that ACHD hearts exhibited early changes in energy metabolism with increased glucose dependence as main cardiac energy source. These changes preceded cardiac dysfunction mediated by exposure to high fat diet and were associated with increased disease severity. Restoration of metabolic balance by metformin administration prevented the development of heart dysfunction in ACHD predisposed mice.ConclusionsThis study reveals that early metabolic impairment reinforces heart dysfunction in ACHD predisposed individuals and diet or pharmacological interventions can be used to modulate heart function and attenuate heart failure. Our study suggests that interactions between genetic and metabolic disturbances ultimately lead to the clinical presentation of heart failure in patients with ACHD. Early manipulation of energy metabolism may be an important avenue for intervention in ACHD patients to prevent or delay onset of heart failure and secondary comorbidities. These interactions raise the prospect for a translational reassessment of ACHD presentation in the clinic.

Abstract In this study, we aimed to increase the knowledge regarding the response mechanisms which were associated with the formation of CdS thin films. CdS thin film remains the most appealing alternative for many researchers, as it has been a capable buffer material for effect in film based polycrystalline solar cells (CdTe, CIGSe, CZTS). The Linker Assisted and Chemical Bath Deposition (LA-CBD) technique, which combines the Linker Assisted (LA) technique and the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method for forming high quality CdS thin film, was presented as an efficient and novel hybrid sensitization technique. CdS films were bound to soda lime with the help of electrostatic forces, which led to the formation of the intermediate complexes [Cd (NH3)4]2+ that helped in the collision of these complexes with a soda lime slide. Salvia dye and as a linker molecule 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) was used in the one step fabrication technique. Optical results showed that the bandgap varied in the range of (2.50 to 2.17) eV. Morphological properties showed a homogeneous distribution of the particles that aspherical in shape in the CdS + MPA + Salvia dye films. This technique significantly affected on the electrical characterizations of CdS films after the annealing process. The CdS + Ag + MPA + Salvia dye films showed the maximum carrier concentration and minimum resistivity, as 5.64 × 10 18 cm−3 and 0.83 Ω cm respectively.

Abstract Background Women with a vulnerable health status, as determined by a low socioeconomic status and poor lifestyle behaviours, are at risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Offering tailored preconception lifestyle care can significantly help to improve pregnancy outcomes. We hypothesize that so-called ‘nudges’ can be a successful way of increasing the uptake of preconception lifestyle care. A nudge is a behavioural intervention that supports healthy choices by making them easier to choose. Nudging, however, raises many moral questions. Effectiveness and respect for autonomy are, among other criteria, required for a nudge to be morally permissible. In general, the target group knows best what they find permissible and what would motivate them to change their lifestyle. Therefore, this study – conducted in women with a vulnerable health status – aimed to identify their preferences towards a nudge, provided via a mobile application that aims to help them adopt healthy lifestyle behaviours by offering rewards. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve women with a vulnerable health status. A framework approach was used to analyse the data. A thematic content analysis was conducted on five themes: (1) “Usefulness of an app as an integral information source”, (2) “Permissibility and effects of offering rewards”, (3) “Preferences regarding content”, (4) “Preferences regarding type of rewards and system of allocation”, and (5) “Barriers”. Results Of the 12 participants, 11 deemed an app as integral information source concerning the preconception period useful. None of the participants objected to being nudged i.e., being rewarded for healthy behaviour. All participants stated that they would like the app to contain information on healthy nutrition and 8 participants wanted to know how to get pregnant quickly. Furthermore, participants stated that the freedom to choose the timing and content of the reward would increase the probability of successful behavioural change, and having to pay or contact a healthcare provider to access the app may prevent women using the app. Conclusions These insights into the preferences of women with a vulnerable health status towards nudging will inform the design of an effective app-based nudge. This may help to improve prepregnancy health as investment in health of current and future generations.

Abstract Background Pulmonary embolism (PE) without overt deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was common in hospitalized coronavirus-induced disease (COVID)-19 patients and represented a diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic challenge. The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic role of PE on mortality and the preventive effect of heparin on PE and mortality in unvaccinated COVID-19 patients without overt DVT. Methods Data from 401 unvaccinated patients (age 68 ± 13 years, 33% females) consecutively admitted to the intensive care unit or the medical ward were included in a retrospective longitudinal study. PE was documented by computed tomography scan and DVT by compressive venous ultrasound. The effect of PE diagnosis and any heparin use on in-hospital death (primary outcome) was analyzed by a classical survival model. The preventive effect of heparin on either PE diagnosis or in-hospital death (secondary outcome) was analyzed by a multi-state model after having reclassified patients who started heparin after PE diagnosis as not treated. Results Median follow-up time was 8 days (range 1–40 days). PE cumulative incidence and in-hospital mortality were 27% and 20%, respectively. Abstract Background The optimal prophylactic dose of heparin in patients with coronavirus-associated disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the emergency department (ED) is debated. This study aimed to analyze different thromboprophylaxis approaches in unvaccinated COVID-19 patients admitted to ED without initial venous thromboembolism. Methods Retrospectively, the effect of intermediate/high versus low dose heparin treatment was evaluated from December 2020 to July 2021 in a tertiary Academic Hospital in northeast Italy. The primary outcome comprised arterial or venous thromboembolism or all-cause death within 30 days. Secondary outcomes comprised each single primary outcome component or major hemorrhagic event. Cox regression was used to determine predictors of the primary outcome and propensity score weights to balance the effect of heparin treatment on all outcomes. Results Data of 144 consecutive patients (age 70 ± 13, 33% females) were included in the study. High-dose prophylactic heparin was used in 69%, intermediate in 15%, and low in 17% of patients. The primary outcome occurred in 48 patients. Independent predictors of the primary outcome were COVID-19 severity (hazards ratio (HR) 1.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05–3.65, p = 0.035) and D-dimer levels (HR each log ng/dl 1.38, 95% CI 1.04–1.84, p = 0.026). Intermediate/high dose heparin did not affect the risk of the primary outcome compared with the low dose (weighted HR 1.39, 95% CI 0.75–2.56, p = 0.292). Intermediate/high heparin increased the risk of major hemorrhagic events (weighted HR 5.92, 95% CI 1.09–32, p = 0.039). Conclusions In unvaccinated COVID-19 patients admitted to ED, prophylaxis with heparin at the intermediate/high dose did not reduce primary outcome compared with the low dose but increased the risk of major hemorrhagic events.

In this study we report the synthesis of single crystals of burbankite, Na3Ca2La(CO3)5, at 5 GPa and 1073 K. The structural evolution, bulk modulus and thermal expansion of burbankite were studied and determined by two separate high-pressure (0–7.07(5) GPa) and high-temperature (298–746 K) in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. The refined parameters of a second-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state (EoS) are V0= 593.22(3) Å3 and KT0= 69.8(4) GPa. The thermal expansion coefficients of a Berman-type EoS are α0= 6.0(2) ×10-5 K−1, α1= 5.7(7) ×10-8 K−2 and V0= 591.95(8) Å3. The thermoelastic parameters determined in this study allow us to estimate the larger density of burbankite in the pressure-temperature range of 5.5–6 GPa and 1173–1273 K, with respect to the density of carbonatitic magmas at the same conditions. For this reason, we suggest that burbankite might fractionate from the magma and play a key role as an upper-mantle reservoir of light trivalent rare earth elements (REE3+).

Background: Differentiation of exudative and transudative types of pleural effusion is crucial for management of patients. Currently, this differentiation is done with the help of biochemical analysis of the aspirated fluid after thoracentesis, which is an invasive procedure. Objective: To evaluate the utility of CT attenuation values in pleural effusion and define a threshold value to differentiate between exudative and transudative pleural effusion. Materials & Methods: A cross sectional study was done on 130 patients showing pleural effusion on CT thorax, mean attenuation was calculated using nine regions of interest on three slices. Within 48 hours of imaging, biochemical assessment was done to decide exudative or transudative nature of fluid as per Light’s criteria. A Receiver operating characteristic curve was drawn to assess the cut off CT attenuation value for distinguishing between exudative and transudative effusion and evaluate its accuracy. Result: Mean CT attenuation value of 57 exudative effusion cases was 5.9 + 6.48 HU, which was higher than 73 cases with transudative pleural effusion (2.97 + 2.69 HU). The difference was statistically significant (p value < 0.0001). The ROC curve revealed a cut off value of 7.5 HU. When the mean CT attenuation value was > 7.5 HU, the specificity and sensitivity of CT scan for diagnosing exudative effusion was 98.6 % and 59.6% respectively. Area under the curve was 0.79, which revealed moderate accuracy of this threshold value. Conclusion: CT attenuation values have moderate accuracy in differentiating between exudative and transudative pleural effusion.
