The aim of the article is to present the private life of Helena Anna Geyer (née Weil) (1855–1935) in the light of her memories and to find an answer to the title question. A woman who was born into a landowning family fell in love with her sister’s brother-in-law, Gustaw Geyer, at a young age. After years of unhappy love, she became close to her beloved, who soon became her husband. The marriage with the son of Ludwik Geyer forced Helena to change her surroundings. Moving from the family estate to the developing Lodz meant that she had to get used to the reality of the big city. In her memoirs written down years later, she told about how she found herself in a new situation.Memories of H.A. Geyer are the testimony of a person who experienced both the life of the landowner and the rich bourgeoisie. The clash of both worlds shows the reader how demanding life was for an individual in a 19th-century metropolis. Unfortunately, the world of the Łódź bourgeoisie was also very brutal for the sensitive H.A. Geyer. Wspomnienia H.A.

This paper discusses the passion of Islamization of the New Order, at the same time the mainstream of this power is based on economic development that provides opportunities for the growth of the Muslim middle class. Patronage model used by the New Order gives an indication that the power built by this regime wants to instill a strong influence in society. At the same time, the New Order is depoliticizing the political attitudes of Muslims. This has implications for the marginalization of the interests of Muslims on the national stage. In this study will also be affirmed the influence of the New Order's power on the presence of the Muslim middle class. On the one hand their birth was the result of the economic development that the New Order echoed. On a different aspect, the presence of the middle class gives strong legitimacy that they are part of the dominating class structure in a country. Also will be reviewed about middle-class interference with the trend of Islamic populism that actually occurred in the era of the 80s, but re-spread after post-reform. Popular Islamic culture becomes a trend that spread through various media such as, internet, magazines, newspapers and so forth. This has received considerable response from middle-class Muslims and led to commodification. Religion facilitates to interact with modernity. Materialistic and hedonistic interests intersect with obedience in the practice of religion. On the one hand, the mode of consumption of the Muslim middle class changes with the adaptation of piety values in the public sphere.

The central issue of Ashraf in reviewing Iran's history is to explain the historical obstacles of the formation of the capitalist system of the bourgeoisie and civil society. Ashraf to Description of the above problem has used the concepts of "Asian system" and "feudal system" in Marx's thoughts, and the concepts of “Patrimonialism” and “the Oriental City” in the sociology of Max Weber. As he has used the native concept of the "Muluk-al-Tawaiifi” to analyze some of the characteristics of the social and political life of the nomadic societies and their effects on social and political life of Iran. Ashraf, one of the representatives of the discourse of democratic and capitalist development pattern based on the role of the middle class or bourgeoisie. Ashraf's views on the historical barriers of Iranian society development are remarkable at three levels of political, social and economic interconnectedness. The dominance of Asian systems and the patrimonial and the Muluk al-Tawaiifi in the political arena, Nomadic, rural, and urban community associations in the social arena And the unity of the methods of agricultural production and handicrafts were the factors that Ashraf has raised as historical obstacles to the realization of feudalism and the growth of "national capitalism" in Iranian history.

This work deals with the extreme provincialism that has characterized and characterizes Italian studies. Italy, in fact, is a country that has lost pace with modernity already in the fifteenth century, when the rest of Europe was opening up to the phenomenon of "globalization". We have demonstrated how, since then, Italy has taken refuge in the myth of Classicism and the Renaissance, from which it has not managed to get out even after the country has joined in a single state entity. The great emigration of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century helped to de-provincialize many Italians, but not art, literature and literary criticism. Criticism did everything to remove the period and the Italian colonial atrocities in Africa. In the second post-war period, while the criticism of colonialism was beginning to take hold throughout Europe, the Italian bourgeoisie (which held economic, political and cultural power) preferred to ignore its deadline operated in the Horn of Africa, Greece and Albania. At the same time, he ignored the lively frontier literature, the Istrian one. Precisely for this reason, in the second part of this work we have dealt with the novel by the Istrian of adoption Eros Sequi, "Le case di pothia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article aims to study the origin of sport in Honduras from 1903 to 1921, when soccer and baseball acquired the national representation category. This study examines issues from La Prensa (1908-1916), El Nuevo Tiempo (1911-1919), El Cronista (1917-1919), Revista Los Sucesos (1918-1921), Revista Tegucigalpa (1919) and Diario Excélsior (1921) so as to determine a historical reconstruction of sports in Honduras between 1903 and 1921. From these facts we conclude that, during the time period studied, sport in Honduras was controlled by the national bourgeoisie and the main foreign colonies. Moreover, the Honduran State's economical and political weakness resulted in meager support for the social and national development of sports in general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The symbolic and physical map of Istanbul has undergone dramatic shifts over the past four decades. Squatters—the persistent underdogs in this huge metropolis—have mounted an attack against established economic and cultural hierarchies. This challenge has transformed the structures of symbolic violence through the production of an alternative urban space (contentious neighborhoods and districts, teahouses, innovative district and street layouts, and 'Islamic' internal and external architecture). In the process, the meanings of urbanity and provinciality, of secularity and Islam, have been altered—and stigma, along with urban rent, has been systematically redistributed (although redistribution has been far from egalitarian). The dominant sectors ultimately absorbed the attack: squatters remained subordinated, but the terms of subordination have changed. A synthesis of Bourdieu and (a geographically revised) Gramsci sheds light on this process of challenge and absorption in and through urban space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The reforms in the second half of the eighteenth century affected the cities and towns of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in various ways. After the reform of 1776, the majority of small towns in the Grand Duchy were deprived of the Magdeburg Law, while they retained the right to acquire landed estates. Apart from private towns, only 11 towns managed by territorial administrators -- starosts -- and belonging to the royal estates retained their privileged status. During the sessions of the Great Sejm (1788-1792), the discussions on the situation of Lithuanian towns were resumed. Representatives of towns that retained the Magdeburg Law, those which had lost it, and those striving for new rights and liberties were invited by the municipal authorities of the Old Town of Warsaw in order to submit their demands in the Sejm together with all the towns. The new town laws of 1791 laid the foundations for modern urban administration and prepared the grounds for burghers to fight for their rights and liberties, which was influenced by the municipal self-government institutions established under these laws. The question of the number of small Lithuanian towns which took advantage of this opportunity during one year (1791/1792) has already been considered in Lithuanian and Polish historiography. Until now, however, historians have usually limited themselves to indicating the number of issued selfgovernment privileges (74), but this figure does not provide a full picture of the political activity of the Lithuanian bourgeoisie. The article identifies 130 small Lithuanian towns (excluding 11 towns which retained the Magdeburg Law) which actively participated in the political movement of the bourgeoisie in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and analyses the composition of this group of urban settlements. Bourgeoisie, which emerged in Western societies within a process of natural selection, was aimed to be formed in Turkey as a project within the Turkish History of Economics in the context of the National Economy Policy of the Union and Progress Party. This is why the designed class was considered to be a National one. After the National Struggle ended in victory, the National Economy Policies of the Party's elite were continued in the Single-Party era. Within the scope of the decisions taken by the Izmir Economic Congress, a national economy was tried to be built in 6 years until the economic crisis of 1929. In this process, while the liberal policies were implemented, the national bourgeoisie was tried to be formed. Every economic move made during the period emerged as a manifestation of the desire of the state to form this class. Due to the outbreak of the economic crisis of 1929, which created havoc on the world economy, and various internal dynamics, developments that took place in World War II and afterwards must be awaited to have a real sense of this social class in Turkey economic systematic. NATURALISM , *MIDDLE class in literature , *FICTION - Abstract
In this article, I analyze Zola's often-understudied 1882 novel of the bourgeois apartment building, Pot-Bouille, to show how it stages the particular impossibility of accurately capturing the nineteenth-century bourgeois type and, more generally, a critique of naturalist method. Pot-Bouille exposes the hypocritical, even deceptive nature of the immeuble's residents through scenes where the narrator is the only one able to observe their duplicitous behavior; simultaneously, it offers numerous instances of imperceptibility or events that cannot be documented or observed. Studying this work alongside Zola's own preparatory notes and the novel's critical reception, I suggest that in this urban novel of the interior, the theories of observation imagined by the naturalist author (and by the first sociological thinkers too) prove at once indispensable and impossible. Ultimately, I argue that in its attempt to expose the difficulties in reducing the bourgeois to a knowable or essential type, Pot-Bouille anticipates twenty-first century scholars such as Sarah Maza, Franco Moretti, and others who write about the porous, even mythical nature of the concept of the bourgeoisie. RUSSIAN Revolution, 1917-1921 ,SOCIAL change ,LEADERSHIP ,FEUDALISM ,SOCIALISM ,COMMUNISM - Abstract
The Russian revolution of October 1917 unleashed the process of social change and the liberation of lower income people in different parts of the world. Termed as the first revolution of workers and other downtrodden people under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin, and adhering to the ideology of Marxism and socialism, the Russian revolution became a model for the colonial subjects of British India. The central argument of this paper rests on exploring the contribution of the -Russian revolution in promoting secular and progressiue ideas in South Asia and how ideology became a factor in determining political discourse in the post-British withdrawal period in the Indian subcontinent. Furthermore, the paper also examines how the fault lines of the Russian revolution and the postreuolutionary phase impacted on the Indian subcontinent and South Asia. And how and why the idea of establishing a class-less society, which was fundamental to the ideology of Marxism, had its impact on South Asia and how reactionary forces exploited the weaknesses of the Russian revolution in order to sustain feudalism and the capitalistic way of life. MIDDLE class ,ECONOMICS ,LIBERTARIANISM ,ECONOMISTS - Abstract
This paper compares Deirdre McCloskey's reading of the "bourgeois reevaluation" with Sergio Ricossa's. Italian economist Sergio Ricossa was -- like McCloskey -- schooled in the neoclassical, formalistic tradition, but in time drifted toward a more "Austrian" approach, as he was influenced by the work of F.A. Hayek. Like McCloskey, in a number of works Ricossa aimed to vindicate the bourgeoisie, placing what McCloskey would later call "the bourgeois deal" at the source of modern economic growth. Ricossa and McCloskey were not connected, nor friends. Yet they both arrived at re-evaluating the bourgeoisie, explicitly linking their liberalism to the historical role played by a specific class. This paper will look at their respective paths, which in some respects are parallel, and will show how their common appreciation of the Bourgeois Era went hand-in-hand with libertarianism as a political philosophy and with a strong appreciation of the Bourgeois Era in history. THEORY of knowledge ,MIDDLE class ,ECONOMICS ,SOCIAL sciences - Abstract
One of the defining features of modern social science and economics in particular is the hard break it posits between everyday and scientific knowledge. French philosophers have called this characteristic the epistemological break. One of the key consequences of this break is that scientists have access to superior knowledge and are in a position to inform and steer the behavior of individuals. We believe that a large epistemological break is incompatible with science in a liberal democratic society. In this paper we analyze the extent to which the writings of Deirdre McCloskey contributed to bridging the epistemological break given that her early work, and the work of some members of younger Chicago School of economics more generally, was strongly influenced by the epistemological break. In the first decade after The Rhetoric of Economics McCloskey did much to strip scientific knowledge of its special elevated status. In her later work on the bourgeoisie there is also a renewed appreciation for everyday knowledge of economic actors. Yet important tensions remain, the appreciation for bourgeois knowledge has not been generalized to an appreciation for all everyday economic knowledge. And the tension between the economist as teacher, and the economist as student of society, which is already present in the Chicago tradition, is still visible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article interprets the image of women into the bourgeoisie mentality, based on a reading of Blanca Sol, a novel of the Peruvian writer Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera. This analysis is divided into three main parts: in the first part, there is a comprehension of the way the narrator (an alter ego of the author) observers the bourgeoisie society and the implications of the social promotion and equality. In the second part, this paper describes how the author of Blanca Sol tries to expose the multiple vicious of this new bourgeoise lifestyle such as hypocrisy, abjection and money desire, and how women can be part of the problem but also part of the solution. The last part developes an analysis of how in the novel Blanca Sol, Cabello de Carbonera assumes the secularization, one of the most important characteristics of modern society supported by bourgeoisie.

This article focuses on the question of pious legacy in the testaments of the members of the Olomouc bourgeoisie. The main research problem of the thesis is the question whether the events of the observed period were reflected in the religiosity of the Olomouc bourgeoisie, how the pious legacies changed throughout the determined 100 years, what institutions the bourgeoisie gave preference to in their testaments and what were the sums bequeathed, whether the bourgeoisie tended to bequeath finances, or movable and immovable property, whether it cared about the use of the legacy and the specific purposes it would be used for. The question further is whether they tended to bequeath their property to Church institutions or to the poor, whether they wished to be remembered after their death and whether there is a significant difference between the testaments of men, and those of women. The article seeks to present an insight into the religious practice of the Olomouc bourgeoisie from mid 14th to mid 15th century in the context of the development of the town, and its events.

One century and seventy years that passed since the first publishing of the Manifesto of the Communist Party (Marx, Engels, 1848), present a good reason to invite the interested authors to reflect on the actuality of main theses of Marx and Engels who summarized them already in this programmatic work while they were still in their twenties, elaborating these theses further in later works, closely related to ups and down of the proletarian class struggle. In the following paragraphs we will review the main theses that are still relevant for understanding the contemporary historical processes and for orienting the action of anti systemic social movements.

Establishing a relationship between the studies of Karl Marx and the research of Michel Foucault is not an easy task. There are readings describing the differences; others might emphasize the similarities while some others criticize Foucault’s developments from a Marxist perspective. In my present work I try to clarify the linkage between the disciplinary power and capitalism of Michel Foucault’s work within the context of the above-mentioned complexities. According to my proposed reading, capitalism does not explain the emergence of the disciplinary power, even if the production and accumulation of capital have applied disciplinary technics.

Debates about employers' collective action have remained inconclusive. Historians, sociologists, and political scientists have established that neither competition between employers, nor the secretive nature of their business practices, nor their supposed individualism, prevent them from acting together or from establishing permanent organizations of various natures. The very rich literature dealing with interest groups (including organizations representing economic interests) demonstrates this fact very convincingly. For instance, Michel Pincon and Monique Pincon-Charlot (2000) have shown that when it comes to its sociabilities and its reproduction, the French bourgeoisie behaves like a “collectivist” class. Keywords: employment relations; capitalism; labor; labor unions; wages

142. “Sin parcialidad ni dádiva ni concierto”. Municipal institutions and urban government at the end of Middle Ages in Asturias

- Abstract
At the end of the Middle Ages, significant changes took place in Asturias in the system of government of new towns and villages. The so-called “open council regime” gave way to a system that tended towards oligarchisation of public offices, now controlled by urban elites who, “with the air of nobility” held the main positions of government and representation, combining this political power with their role, also a leading one, in the control of taxation and the urban economy. In this study we analyse the case of Oviedo, a city of lordship shared with the Church; Avilés, a town of ancient foundation and that of some new “minor” towns that dotted the urban space of Asturias at the end of the Middle Ages., A fines de la Edad Media se producen en Asturias cambios significativos en el sistema de gobierno de ciudades y villas nuevas.

143. Between Between Reality and the Ivory Tower: the Poetry of José de Siles

- Abstract
At the end of the 19th century in Spain, the writing of naturalist and modernist authors went beyond Romantic forms and became a reflection of the crisis of bourgeois ideology. An example of this is the literature of the Bohemian José de Siles (1856-1911), a poet on the fringes of the literary canon. The following essay analyses two aesthetic directions in the poetic work of José de Siles, the “writing on the street”, attentive to the miseries of the lower classes, and the “writing from the tower”, which is based on reverie and the refuge of art, with the aim of giving them a historical meaning. Thus, the poetry of José de Siles, as a poet outside the canon, is rescued in order to help compose a historical-literary system and allow a better understanding of the figure of the fin-de-siècle writer in conflict with bourgeois society., A finales del siglo XIX, en España, la escritura de los autores naturalistas y modernistas supera las formas románticas y se convierte en un reflejo de la crisis de la ideología burguesa.

144. Class Struggle: Money, Power, Oppression, and Resistance

- Abstract
The paper contributes to the lifelong dialogs about the capital-labor conflict between the upper-class (bourgeoisie) and the working-class (proletariat). It unpacks the ideological underpinnings driving the insatiable quest of the capitalist class for profit, power, interminable exploitation of the working class across ages. The paper underscores the knack of the upper-classes to exert limitless authority over the working classes given their control of the means of production in ways that include dictating the working conditions, wages, hours of work, and engaging the apparatuses of the state – laws, judiciary, police, and army – as detailed by Althusser, to enforce their compliance with capitalist ideals (80). It ascribes the continued failure of the working-class to successfully resist and overthrow the brutal capitalist machinery to encumbering False Consciousness; described as a mental trap that propels the class to accept and naively participate in their own economic oppression. The predilection of the members towards individualized forms of resistance as against forming formidable alliances across interest groups to pursue collective action is equally found culpable. Alongside forming alliances, the author suggests outright rejection of bourgeois ideologies which permeate the major spheres of the society and their replacement with the workers’ own ideological alternatives as imperative. Consistent with Marx’s submission, workers’ ownership of the means of production to produce their own necessities rather than continually selling their labor for a living wage is considered expedient in their struggle to disable the capitalist machinery system (571). This is coupled with textual analysis of media and popular culture, for example, newspapers, television, advertising, games, and films, by the audience; mostly comprising the working class, to unearth and disavow the entrenched capitalist ethos. The paper examines two films that exemplify how the capita

- Abstract
This article looks in depth at the construction of the first haussmanian public space in the south of Spain, the plaza Nueva in Seville, as well as the reasons that led to the dismantling of its architectural unity and, therefore, part of its heritage values. The loss of the original design unity derives from the introduction of historicist models and the Modern Movement, in which the singularity of architecture is given priority over the homogeneity of the urban project. Real estate speculation and the celebration of the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition built a functional and aesthetically capitalist scenario that limited the social activities of a square originally conceived as a collective meeting point. Through the sequence of elaborated planimetries we can observe the change of paradigm from illustrated values to developmental strength.

The period of literary romanticism favoured mainly historicism and a journalistic style of prose narrative dominated by patriotic and national themes. J. M. Hurban's novel "From New Year's Eve to Twelfth Night" is a picture of his times in a satirical tone that also addresses patriotic issues. People's relationships to their nation are addressed in the fictional setting of the small, madcap town of Bruchoslavice. In Hurban's account, this becomes a stage for a satirical dissection of contemporary social events and a critique of the amoral behaviour of a small-town community dominated by pretension, gossip and the pursuit of property. He creates a sense of place by presenting his characters through descriptions of the interiors of their dwellings that reflect their character traits. Hurban brings his "literary town" to life by combining public and private relations with the environment of residential property. The urban space is pre sented through the experience of both the individual and the community as a whole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This volume examines the effects of both dimensions on the reorganization of spatial formats and spatial orders in France and in other societies. It departs from the assumption that revolutions shatter not only the political and economic old regime order at home but, in an increasingly interdependent world, also result in processes of respatialization.
