Abstract

In this paper, we provide an overview of the distribution and invasive status of non-native species in the Italian flora across its administrative regions, biogeographic regions and main land use types, and a synthesis of current knowledge on the threats they pose within the country. The information on non-native plant species collected during the project oA survey of the non-native Italian florao was used to compile comprehensive regional and national databases. The number of non-native species within a given administrative region increases in proportion to its size, resident population density and latitude, reaching the highest values in the intensively cultivated, heavily industrialized and urbanized Po Plain in northern Italy. The number of casual species is positively correlated with the number of yearly visitors in each region and negatively correlated with the proportion of mountainous terrain within the region. If compared with the Continental and Mediterranean biogeographic regions, the Alpine region yields the lowest number of non-native species and lowest proportion of casual species. The number and density of introduced species is highest in artificial land use types, particularly in urban areas. A negative impact is reported to be exerted by 203 species, most of which are agricultural weeds.

Abstract

Habitat Directive is the core strategy of nature conservation in Europe aiming at halting biodiversity loss. In this study the results of the third Italian assessment regarding the conservation status (CS) of plants listed in the Habitat Directive (Flora of community interest—FCI) was presented. Data was collected from several sources related to plant distribution, population data, habitats and pressures. Following the official European procedure, all parameters were evaluated and combined to give the CS of each taxon in each biogeographical region of presence. A comparison between the recent Italian IUCN and Reporting assessments was performed in order to evaluate the consistency between these two assessments. The official EU checklist comprises 113 Italian plant taxa, 107 of which were examined in this study. Our results showed a critical situation with only 34% of favourable CS, while 50% were unfavourable (40% inadequate plus 10% bad) and 16% unknown, in particular in the Mediterranean bioregion, where the unfavourable assessments reach the 65%. The results of the Report were consistent with those of the IUCN assessment, in which 41.9% of plants were threatened with extinction. This report highlighted some benefits and criticisms at national level, but it may have a wider significance. Although a general advance of knowledge, a great effort is needed to reach the Habitats Directive goals. Despite the limited resources, monitoring activities needs to be improved in order to close information gaps for several plants. A positive outcome was the development of a specific national project funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment, with the ambitious target to set future monitoring activities for FCI and optimize monitoring efforts.

Abstract

A sensitivity analysis is carried out to all inputs of a one-dimensional solid-gas model for the spontaneous and the piloted ignition of thick poly (methyl methacrylate) under a constant radiative heat flux, which was previously subjected to experimental validation (Fire Saf. J. 129, 103566, 2022 [1]). For both ignition modes, the highest sensitivity is observed for the kinetics of polymer decomposition and monomer combustion whose rates are varied within literature ranges of 5–7 and 4-6 orders of magnitude, respectively. The strongest effects are for the decomposition kinetics, though they tend to decrease as the radiative heat is increased (25kW/m2-150 kW/m2). The piloted ignition times predicted with the slowest and the fastest decomposition kinetics are longer and shorter by about 255%–85 % and 45%–20 %, respectively, compared with the reference case. Slightly lower values are predicted for spontaneous ignition. Maximum deviations of about +10 % and −30 % are predicted with the slowest and the fastest combustion kinetics. Hence the polymer properties and the decomposition atmosphere are key issues for quantitative predictions and should be properly considered. The influences of the solid- and gas-phase radiation absorption coefficients and the spark temperature are also discussed for variations in the range of literature values. 119. H2SO4-Catalyzed Pyrolysis of Corncobs

Abstract

The acid-catalyzed pyrolysis of corncobs is investigated for the production of chemicals (in particular furfural) and bioproducts. Particles, preimpregnated with H2SO4 concentrations up to about 4% (dry sample mass basis) and predried at 343 K, are exposed in the form of a packed-bed at a heating temperature of 800 K. The gas release rate remains approximately constant, at a value about half with respect to the maximum detected for acid-free samples, for a large part of the process transients. Conversion times are roughly increased by 50% while reaction temperatures, on the average, become lower by about 20-40 K. Dehydrating and charring reactions become successively more favored suppressing the formation of condensable organic compounds.Adecay is observed in the yields of both some carbohydrates (hydroxyacetaldehyde, hydroxypropanone, furfuryl alcohol, etc.) and phenolics (phenol, guiacol, 4-methyguaicol, 4-ethylguaicol, syringol) although less steep for the latter. However, catalyst concentrations below 0.5% lead to maxima in the yields of levoglucosan, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and 1,6-anhydro-?-D-glucofuranose. Moreover, the production is significantly enhanced of levoglucosenone (from trace amounts up to 4.5%) and furfural (from 0.65% up to 5%) at catalyst concentrations around 1-2% and 2-3%, with 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-R-Dglucopyranose (maximum yield 0.65%) acting as a reaction intermediate. The yield of acetic acid remains constant at 4% up to catalyst concentration around 3%. Higher catalyst concentrations are associated with a rapid decline in the yields of all these organic compounds with the total amount of char, carbon dioxide, and water reaching 70%.

Abstract

This study describes the vegetation zonation of the coastal sandy landscapes of the Lazio region (Central Italy) and analyses the effects of disturbance (in the main human, but also natural) on this vegetation. A comparison is made between real and potential coastal vegetation using a hierarchical landscape classification approach, which identifies land units on the basis of a combination of climatic, lithological, geomorphological and hydrogeological factors, integrated with phytosociological data. Information about the coastal phytocoenoses was obtained both from previous studies and from original phytosociological data (241 releves). Observation of real vegetation showed that coastal zonation is relatively well-preserved at only a few sites along the Lazio coast. At these sites real vegetation distribution is very similar to the potential zonation. However, widespread disturbance means that real vegetation is drastically different from the hypothetical phyto-topo sequence along most of the coast. Where disturbance has been particularly intense or prolonged in time, coenoses have often completely disappeared. Where disturbance is severe, but slightly less so, coenoses tend to have became fragmented or substituted by replacement communities.

Abstract

The conservation of species listed in the Bern Convention and European Directive 1992/43/EEC (so-called policy species) is mandatory for European Union (EU) countries. We assessed the conservation status of Italian policy species, based on the IUCN categories and criteria, to evaluate the effectiveness of existing protection measures at the national level. Among the 203 vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens evaluated, 41.9% are categorized as threatened, and one is already extinct, indicating that the protection measures for policy species are inadequate. Our results for the Italian policy species are consistent with those of an assessment at the EU level. Conservation priorities should be established at both the national and regional scales. An effective conservation strategy is needed, and in situ and ex situ actions focused on threatened species should be promoted.

Abstract

Map of the natural and semi-natural environments and forest types map for the Latium region (Italy). The paper presents the main methodological aspects and the most important results achieved in the implementation of the “Map of natural and semi-natural environments” and of the “Forest types map” in Lazio region at a scale of 1:10.000. The project was carried out for the Agenzia dei Parchi and for the Area Foreste of Regione Lazio through a collaboration between e-GEOS , the University of Rome "La Sapienza", the University of Tuscia and Forestlab Centre , a spin- off of the University of Molise . The project is based on the integrated use of high-resolution satellite imagery and ADS40 false-color infrared digital orthophotos and led to the creation of two maps geometrically and thematically consistent with each other. The “Map of natural and semi-natural environments” is integrated with the pre-existing land use map of the Lazio region deepening the thematic detail up to the 6th Corine level. The “Forest types map” is based on a typological system organized in 17 categories and 36 forest types.
