Eutrophication is a global problem causing the reduction of water quality and the loss of ecosystem goods and services. The lakes of the “Lagunas de Montebello” National Park (LMNP), Chiapas, Mexico, not only represent unique and beautiful natural scenic sites in southern Mexico but are also a national protected area and RAMSAR site. Unfortunately, some of these lakes started showing eutrophication signs since 2003. Anthropogenic activities (e.g., land-use change from forested to agricultural and urban development) are leading to water quality and trophic state alterations of the lakes of the LMNP. This study shows the results of a coupled limnological characterization and high-throughput sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene to analyze the microbial composition of the water column in a set of oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes. Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) was the main environmental parameter correlated with the trophic conditions of the lakes. Although the microbial diversity was similar, the microbial composition changed significantly from oligo to eutrophic lakes. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria were the main components of oligotrophic lakes, and Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes of eutrophic lakes. While Acinetobacter (Proteobacteria) and Cyanobium (a unicellular cyanobacterium) dominated in oligotrophic lakes, the filamentous, bloom-forming, and toxin-producing cyanobacteria Planktothrix was the dominant genus in eutrophic lakes. High-throughput sequencing allowed the detection of changes in the composition of the microbial component in oligotrophic lakes, suggesting a shift towards eutrophication, highlighting the relevance of sensitive monitoring protocols of these ecosystems to implement remediation programs for eutrophicated lakes and conservation strategies for those yet pristine.

The current research develops a case study of a model of a Fair of small producers in urban spaces, discussing the implications of inclusive innovation processes from a regional food heritage perspective. Through gathering primary information, interviews and discussions with the protagonists and stakeholders, this study reveals innovation processes that have facilitated inclusive development taking into account the participation of rural small producers. The configuration of inclusive innovation processes has been evidenced by the assets, actors and the food community that have been created in the frame of the Fair. This has generated a new value to this initiative and has laid the basis for the consolidation of the Fair as a model that can be replied. The analysis allows us to affirm that the Fair constitutes a space for inclusive innovation due to it has built new networks with heterogeneous actors, it has capitalized various types of traditional knowledge and it has generated opportunities for small producers. From a cultural perspective, the regional food heritage that has been promoted by small producers in the Fair, has contributed to generating new capacities and opportunities in this population.

El presente trabajo es un estudio de caso de un modelo de Feria de pequeños productores rurales que se desarrolla en un espacio urbano, el cual discute las implicancias de los procesos de innovación inclusiva desde una perspectiva del patrimonio alimentario regional. A través del recojo de información primaria, entrevistas y discusiones con los protagonistas y actores relacionados se evidencia cómo los procesos de innovación han logrado generar procesos de desarrollo inclusivo en pequeños productores. La configuración de los procesos de innovación inclusiva se ha podido evidenciar desde los activos, actores y comunidad alimentaria de la Feria, que han servido para darle valor a la iniciativa, así como han sentado las bases para la consolidación de un modelo con gran potencial de réplica. El análisis realizado, permite afirmar que la Feria se constituye en un espacio de innovación inclusiva pues ha construido redes con actores heterogéneos, ha capitalizado diversos tipos de conocimientos tradicionales y ha generado oportunidades a pequeños productores, revalorizando su patrimonio alimentario regional lo cual ha contribuido a generar nuevas capacidades y oportunidades en dicha población.

The potential use of nanostructured dipeptide self-assemblies in materials science for energy harvesting devices is a highly sought-after area of research. Specifically, aromatic cyclo-dipeptides containing tryptophan have garnered attention due to their wide-bandgap semiconductor properties, high mechanical rigidity, photoluminescence, and nonlinear optical behavior. In this study, we present the development of a hybrid system comprising biopolymer electrospun fibers incorporated with the chiral cyclo-dipeptide L-Tryptophan-L-Tyrosine. The resulting nanofibers are wide-bandgap semiconductors (bandgap energy 4.0 eV) consisting of self-assembled nanotubes embedded within a polymer matrix, exhibiting intense blue photoluminescence. Moreover, the cyclo-dipeptide L-Tryptophan-L-Tyrosine incorporated into polycaprolactone nanofibers displays a strong effective second harmonic generation signal of 0.36 pm/V and shows notable piezoelectric properties with a high effective coefficient of 22 pCN−1, a piezoelectric voltage coefficient of geff=1.2 VmN−1 and a peak power density delivered by the nanofiber mat of 0.16μWcm−2. These hybrid systems hold great promise for applications in the field of nanoenergy harvesting and nanophotonics.

We report the DNA-binding properties of three porphyrins with peripheral thienyl substituents (TThPor, PdTThPor and PtTThPor). The binding capacity of each porphyrin with DNA was determined by UV-Vis and steady-state fluorescence emission spectroscopy combined with molecular docking calculations. The results suggest that the interaction of these compounds probably occurs via secondary interactions via external grooves (minor grooves) around the DNA macromolecule. Moreover, porphyrins containing peripheral Pd(II) or Pt(II) complexes (PdTThPor and PtTThPor) were able to promote photo-damage in the DNA.

A growing population increases the demand for food, but short shelf-lives and microbial hazards reduce supply and increase food waste. Fresh fish is highly perishable and may be consumed raw, such as salmon in sushi. This work aims to identify strategies to improve the shelf-life and safety of fresh salmon, using available methods (i.e., vacuum) and exploring the use of natural preservatives (i.e., seasonings). Vacuum packaging and good hygiene practices (which reduce initial flora) extended shelf-life up to 20 days. Carnobacterium maltaromaticum was dominant in vacuum packaging conditions and showed potential for inhibiting Listeria monocytogenes. For natural preservatives, L. monocytogenes required higher inhibitory concentrations in vitro when compared to the 10 spoilage bacteria isolated from fresh salmon fillets, presenting a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.13% for oregano essential oil (OEO), 10% for lemon juice, 50 mg mL−1 for garlic powder, and >10% for NaCl. A good bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect was observed for a mixture containing 5% NaCl, 0.002% OEO, 2.5% lemon juice, and 0.08 mg mL−1 garlic powder. Finally, using the salmon medium showed an adequate correlation with the commercial culture medium.

Recognition of risk factors for hospital-acquired infections (HAI) in patients with COVID-19 is warranted. We aimed to describe factors associated with the development of HAI in patients with severe COVID-19. We conducted a retrospective cohort study including all adult patients admitted with severe COVID-19 between March 2020 and November 2020. The primary outcome was HAI development. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression models were constructed. Among 1540 patients, HAI occurred in 221 (14%). A total of 299 episodes of HAI were registered. The most common HAI were hospital-acquired/ventilation-associated pneumonia (173 episodes) and primary bloodstream infection (66 episodes). Death occurred in 387 (35%) patients and was more frequent in patients with HAI (38% vs. 23%, p < 0.01). Early mechanical ventilation (aOR 18.78, 95% CI 12.56–28.07), chronic kidney disease (aOR 3.41, 95% CI 1.4–8.27), use of corticosteroids (aOR 2.95, 95% CI 1.92–4.53) and tocilizumab (aOR 2.68, 95% CI 1.38–5.22), age ≥ 60 years (aOR 1.91, 95% CI 1.27–2.88), male sex (aOR 1.52, 95% CI 1.03–2.24), and obesity (aOR 1.49, 95% CI 1.03–2.15) were associated with HAI. In patients with severe COVID-19, mechanical ventilation within the first 24 h upon admission, chronic kidney disease, use of corticosteroids, use of tocilizumab, age ≥ 60 years, male sex, and obesity were associated with a higher risk of HAI.

Introduction: Infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) are a significant cause of mortality and represent a serious challenge to health systems. The early identification of mortality predictors could guide appropriate treatment and follow-up. We aimed to identify the factors associated with 90-day all-cause mortality in patients with CR-GNB infections. Methods: We conducted a cohort study from 1 January 2019 to 30 April 2022. The primary outcome was death from any cause during the first 90 days after the date of the first CR-GNB-positive culture. Secondary outcomes included infection relapse, invasive mechanical ventilation during follow-up, need for additional source control, acute kidney injury, Clostridioides difficile infection, and all-cause hospital admission after initial discharge. Bivariate and multivariate Cox-proportional hazards models were constructed to identify the factors independently associated with 90-day all-cause mortality. Results: A total of 225 patients with CR-GNB infections were included. Death occurred in 76 (34%) cases. The most-reported comorbidities were immunosuppression (43%), arterial hypertension (35%), and COVID-19 (25%). The median length of stay in survivors was 18 days (IQR 10–34). Mechanical ventilation and ICU admission after diagnosis occurred in 8% and 11% of cases, respectively. Both infection relapse and rehospitalisation occurred in 18% of cases. C. difficile infection was diagnosed in 4% of cases. Acute kidney injury was documented in 22% of patients. Mechanical ventilation after diagnosis, ICU admission after diagnosis, and acute kidney injury in the first ten days of appropriate treatment were more frequently reported among non-survivors. In the multivariate analysis, age (HR 1.19 (95%CI 1.00–1.83)), immunosuppression (HR 1.84 (95%CI 1.06–3.18)), and septic shock at diagnosis (HR 2.40 (95% 1.41–4.08)) had an independent association with death during the first 90 days after the CR-GNB infection diagnosis. Receiving antibiogram-guided appropriate treatment was independently associated with a lower risk of death (HR 0.25 (95%CI 0.14–0.46)). Conclusions: The presence of advanced age, immunosuppression, septic shock at diagnosis, and inappropriate treatment are associated with higher 90-day all-cause mortality in hospitalised patients with infections due to CR-GNB. Recognition of the risk factors for adverse outcomes could further assist in patient care and the design of interventional studies that address the severe and widespread problem that is carbapenem resistance.

Degrons are short peptide sequences that signalize target sites for protein degradation by proteases. Herein, we bring forth the discussion on degrons present in proteins related to the immune system of Mus musculus that are potential targets for cysteine and serine proteases of Leishmania spp. and their possible roles on host immune regulation by parasites. The Merops database was used to identify protease substrates and proteases sequence motifs, while MAST/MEME Suite was applied to find degron motifs in murine cytokines (IFN-y, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-17) and transcription factors (NF-kappaB, STAT-1, AP-1, CREB, and BACH2). STRING tool was used to construct an interaction network for the immune factors and SWISS-MODEL server to generate three-dimensional models of proteins. In silico assays confirm the occurrence of degrons in the selected immune response factors. Further analyses were conducted only in those with resolved three-dimensional structures. The predicted interaction network of degron-containing M. musculus proteins shows the possibility that the specific activity of parasite proteases could interfere with the trend of Th1/Th2 immune responses. Data suggest that degrons may play a role in the immune responses in leishmaniases as targets for parasite proteases activity, directing the degradation of specific immune-related factors.

Background: Invasive Fungal Infections (IFI) are emergent complications of COVID-19. In this study, we aim to describe the prevalence, related factors, and outcomes of IFI in critical COVID-19 patients. Methods: We conducted a nested case–control study of all COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who developed any IFI and matched age and sex controls for comparison (1:1) to evaluate IFI-related factors. Descriptive and comparative analyses were made, and the risk factors for IFI were compared versus controls. Results: We found an overall IFI prevalence of 9.3% in COVID-19 patients in the ICU, 5.6% in COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA), and 2.5% in invasive candidiasis (IC). IFI patients had higher SOFA scores, increased frequency of vasopressor use, myocardial injury, and more empirical antibiotic use. CAPA was classified as possible in 68% and 32% as probable by ECMM/ISHAM consensus criteria, and 57.5% of mortality was found. Candidemia was more frequent for C. parapsilosis Fluconazole resistant outbreak early in the pandemic, with a mortality of 28%. Factors related to IFI in multivariable analysis were SOFA score > 2 (aOR 5.1, 95% CI 1.5–16.8, p = 0.007) and empiric antibiotics for COVID-19 (aOR 30, 95% CI 10.2–87.6, p = Conclusions: We found a 9.3% prevalence of IFIs in critically ill patients with COVID-19 in a single center in Mexico; factors related to IFI were associated with higher SOFA scores and empiric antibiotic use for COVID-19. CAPA is the most frequent type of IFI. We did not find a mortality difference.

A polymorph of glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O is synthesized from chiral cyclo-glycyl-L-alanine dipeptide. The dipeptide is known to show molecular flexibility in different environments, which leads to polymorphism. The crystal structure of the glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O polymorph is determined at room temperature and indicates that the space group is polar (P21), with two molecules per unit cell and unit cell parameters a = 7.747 Å, b = 6.435 Å, c = 10.941 Å, α = 90°, β = 107.53(3)°, γ = 90° and V = 520.1(7) Å3. Crystallization in the polar point group 2, with one polar axis parallel to the b axis, allows pyroelectricity and optical second harmonic generation. Thermal melting of the glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O polymorph starts at 533 K, close to the melting temperature reported for cyclo-glycyl-L-alanine (531 K) and 32 K lower than that reported for linear glycyl-L-alanine dipeptide (563 K), suggesting that although the dipeptide, when crystallized in the polymorphic form, is not anymore in its cyclic form, it keeps a memory of its initial closed chain and therefore shows a thermal memory effect. Here, we report a pyroelectric coefficient as high as 45 µC/m2K occurring at 345 K, one order of magnitude smaller than that of semi-organic ferroelectric triglycine sulphate (TGS) crystal. Moreover, the glycyl-L-alanine HI.H2O polymorph displays a nonlinear optical effective coefficient of 0.14 pm/V, around 14 times smaller than the value from a phase-matched inorganic barium borate (BBO) single crystal. The new polymorph displays an effective piezoelectric coefficient equal to deff=280 pCN−1, when embedded into electrospun polymer fibers, indicating its suitability as an active system for energy harvesting.

Onychomycosis is a prevalent nail fungal infection, and Candida albicans is one of the most common microorganisms associated with it. One alternative therapy to the conventional treatment of onychomycosis is antimicrobial photoinactivation. This study aimed to evaluate for the first time the in vitro activity of cationic porphyrins with platinum(II) complexes 4PtTPyP and 3PtTPyP against C. albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration of porphyrins and reactive oxygen species was evaluated by broth microdilution. The yeast eradication time was evaluated using a time-kill assay, and a checkerboard assay assessed the synergism in combination with commercial treatments. In vitro biofilm formation and destruction were observed using the crystal violet technique. The morphology of the samples was evaluated by atomic force microscopy, and the MTT technique was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the studied porphyrins in keratinocyte and fibroblast cell lines. The porphyrin 3PtTPyP showed excellent in vitro antifungal activity against the tested C. albicans strains. After white-light irradiation, 3PtTPyP eradicated fungal growth in 30 and 60 min. The possible mechanism of action was mixed by ROS generation, and the combined treatment with commercial drugs was indifferent. The 3PtTPyP significantly reduced the preformed biofilm in vitro. Lastly, the atomic force microscopy showed cellular damage in the tested samples, and 3PtTPyP did not show cytotoxicity against the tested cell lines. We conclude that 3PtTPyP is an excellent photosensitizer with promising in vitro results against C. albicans strains.

Abstract Background The present study aims to assess the influence of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on stability in implants placed in healed sites. Material and methods The present study followed the SPIRIT statement and is reported according to CONSORT. Patients were randomly allocated to LLLT or control groups. LLLT consisted in the application of 808-nm GaAlA laser applied before the preparation of the implant bed and after suturing (80 seconds; 11J/cm2). Implant stability quotient (ISQ) and the distance between the implant platform to the alveolar bone crest (millimeters) were assessed at implant placement (T0) and the abutment selection phase (4–6 months, Ta). Results A total of 64 implants were placed in 33 patients. The insertion torque ranged from 10 to 70 N.cm (mean 43.23; SD ±16.82). The T0 ISQ ranged from 18 to 95.5 (mean 61.7; SD ±18.23) and the crestal bone radiographic distance was 2.03 mm (SD±1.27). At Ta, the ISQ ranged from 39 to 90 (mean 64.2; SD±9.84), and the mean crestal bone radiographic loss was 1.70mm (SD±1.65). However, no differences were observed when LLLT and control groups were compared with ISQ difference (Ta–T0; p=0.598) or radiographical peri-implant alterations (p=0.531). Conclusion LLLT did not influence the implant stability in implants placed in healed sites compared to a control group. Trial registration ReBEC, RBR-35TNJ7 . Registered May 23, 2018

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Dry mouth syndrome or xerostomia is defined as decreased salivary flow or hypofunction of salivary glands. Its origins are multicausal and might be the result of a change in the salivary glands or a systemic imbalance. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of self-reported xerostomia and to identify associated factors. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study on the entire population of 293 elderly people over 60 years of age living in a Brazilian municipality. METHODS: Data were gathered from a questionnaire that asked about demographic data, chronic diseases and use of continuous medications, and which used the Xerostomia Inventory (XI) to evaluate dry mouth sensation. Our analysis consisted of multivariate regression and estimation of odds ratios (OR) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) in binary logistic regression models. RESULTS: The prevalence of self-reported xerostomia was 19.1%. Elderly people with diabetes had higher odds of having self-reported xerostomia (OR: 3.59; 95% CI: 1.48-8.68; P < 0.001) as did those who had chronic diseases and used continuous medication (OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.19-4.67; P = 0.009). Elderly people who used continuous medication for the gastrointestinal tract were more likely to have xerostomia (OR: 2.14; 95% CI: 1.03-1.44; P = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS: Elderly people with diabetes and chronic diseases who were using continuous medication were more likely to have dry mouth. Use of continuous medications for the gastrointestinal tract led to a greater chance of having self-reported xerostomia.

Introduction: The association between uterine cervix and anogenital carcinomas and human papillomavirus, HPV, is well established, however the involvement of this virus in the development of oral squamous cell carcinomas remains controversial. Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between HPV infection and oral squamous cell carcinomas, and to estimate the incidence of this infection in these patients. Methods: Four electronic databases were searched to find studies that met the following inclusion criteria: i) performed in humans; ii) were cohort, case-control or cross-sectional; iii) assessed the HPV oncogenic activity by the E6 and E7 mRNA; iv) included primary oral squamous cell carcinomas which; v) diagnosis had been confirmed by biopsy. Information about the country; study period; sample obtainment; sites of oral squamous cell carcinomas; number, gender and age range of the population; the prevalence of HPV infection and subtypes detected; use of tobacco or alcohol and oral sex practice were extracted. The methodological quality of included articles was assessed using 14 criteria. Results: The search strategy retrieved 2129 articles. Assessment of the full text was done for 626 articles, but five were included. The total of participants included was 383, most of them male with mean age between 51.0 and 63.5 years old. Seventeen patients were HPV/mRNA-positive, being the subtypes 16 and 18 detected more frequently. Nine of the HPV/mRNA-positive oral squamous cell carcinomas occurred on the tongue. The quality score average of included articles was five points. Conclusions: Among the 383 oral squamous cell carcinoma patients included, 17 (4.4%) were HPV/mRNA-positive, nevertheless it was not possible to assess if HPV infection was associated with oral squamous cell carcinomas because none of the studies included was longitudinal and cross-sectional investigations do not have control group.

Resumo Muito tem sido escrito a respeito da transparência externa no setor público. No entanto, a transparência interna - a divulgação inter- e intra-governamental de informações - é comumente negligenciada como objeto de estudo. Subestimar a transparência interna é surpreendente, pois ela é um fator determinante para a coordenação de políticas públicas e para uma governança democrática de qualidade. O presente artigo analisa os custos de curto e longo prazos do não cumprimento de requisitos de transparência interna vinculados aos orçamentos municipais em geral e aos gastos com educação em particular. Neste estudo, utilizamos métodos mistos, analisando quantitativamente os incentivos de curto prazo para cumprir os requisitos de transparência do financiamento da educação e, qualitativamente, as consequências futuras decorrentes do seu descumprimento. Os resultados revelam que municípios que recebem maior volume de transferências voluntárias têm maior probabilidade de atender aos requisitos de transparência interna; contudo, os custos de não cumprir tais requisitos são baixos e facilmente reversíveis a curto prazo. No longo prazo, os prefeitos que não cumprirem a regulação orçamentária, incluindo a legislação para a transparência interna, podem enfrentar consequências mais severas, como a possibilidade de serem futuramente impedidos de exercer seus cargos. No entanto, nossos resultados mostram relativamente poucos casos de punição e que, em média, essas punições só são aplicadas após dez anos de processos judiciais. De modo geral, demonstramos que os Tribunais de Contas - principais agentes para a accountability orçamentária dos 5.570 municípios brasileiros - são tão importantes quanto ineficazes para a transparência interna.

This paper examines the experiences of a group of values education teachers who are studying in a customized scholarship and online graduate program under the Linking Standards and Quality Practice (LiSQuP) project in the Philippines. It aimed to explore the attitudes, benefits, and challenges encountered by the values education teachers by participating in the LiSQuP program. Embedded single case study research design was used, and qualitative content analysis was utilized for analyzing and interpreting the data. Recorded focus group interview, online survey documents, observations, and participatory contact were used to obtain the data from the 30 participants who are LiSQuP scholars and teachers of values education in the public schools of the Philippines. Based on the findings of the study, the following results were drawn: 1) The participants exhibited adaptive and positive attitude towards the LiSQuP program; 2) The participants benefited from the program in terms of professional and personal development; and 3) The participants struggled with various factors related to time, program design, and personal traits. The rewarding and challenging experiences of the participants in this study may inform the project management team and other higher education institutions with similar online programs to enhance opportunities for a more responsive and collaborative online learning community for diverse graduate distance learners.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States and the most taught additional language (L2) in elementary-level schools. However, the amount and type of access differs according to the resources available. Rural settings, which comprise a third of all schools in the US, often have fewer resources and support for the development and maintenance of exposure-track L2 programs, which meet once per week with the goal of, as the name suggests, providing exposure to the L2, rather than a focus on cumulative language development. Given that there are immediate and long-term benefits of even low levels of early bilingualism, ensuring access to quality L2 education is a matter of equity. This paper centers on the first year of a longitudinal collaboration between an exposure-track Spanish language teacher in a rural elementary school, and the research team who created a task-based program tailored for the school following a needs analysis. We analyze the first year of the grant-funded program based on task effectiveness, student enjoyment, and teacher perspectives. We contextualize results within the rural community and offer initial longitudinal data on US exposure-track Spanish. We detail how we adjusted the program for the second year, are freely sharing the materials on the Task Bank (tblt.indiana.edu) and have transferred the program to the teacher's autonomy. Finally, we highlight that the success of this program was and is due to the collaborative nature of the partnership between the teacher, the researchers, and the administrators.

Antecedentes: El estudio del estrés laboral centrado en la ocupación médica es un tema explorado desde los años 1950-1960 hasta la actualidad. Aunque actualmente se ha descrito la resiliencia como un territorio para la práctica de enseñanza médica de posgrado, existen pocos estudios en esta población. Objetivo: Determinar la correlación existente entre estrés laboral y resiliencia en los médicos residentes de medicina familiar. Material y métodos: Estudio transversal con muestra no probabilística del total de la población de médicos residentes de medicina familiar adscritos a la Unidad de Medicina Familiar N.º 57 IMSS Puebla. Se recogieron datos sociodemográficos y se aplicaron el inventario de estrés para profesionales de la salud de Wolfgang y el cuestionario de resiliencia (Fuerza y Seguridad Personal). Resultados: Se encuestaron 60 médicos: 58.3% (35) mujeres y 41.7% (25) hombres. Predominó el estrés laboral moderado en el 60% (36) y la resiliencia alta en el 81.7% (49). La x2 de independencia mostró una p = 0.003, y la rho de Spearman expuso una correlación de –0.362, con una p = 0.004. Conclusiones: Existe dependencia y una correlación negativa débil entre el estrés laboral y la resiliencia en los médicos residentes de medicina familiar.

Summary: Background: In January 2018, Ecuador changed its routine immunization schedule by replacing one full dose of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) administered intramuscularly at 2 months of age with two doses of fractional IPV (1/5th of full dose, fIPV) administered intradermally at 2 and 4 months of age; and bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (serotypes 1 and 3, bOPV) continues to be used. We compared seroprevalence and titres of polio antibodies achieved by the past and the current immunization schedules. Methods: This was a cross-sectional serological survey in children in Ecuador who received bOPV and either one IPV dose in 2017 or two fIPV doses in 2018. One blood sample was collected between October 2020 and March 2021 and analysed for presence of poliovirus neutralizing antibodies at CDC, Atlanta by microneutralization assay. Findings: We obtained 321 analysable samples from 329 (97·6%) enrolled children (160 received IPV and 161 fIPV). Objective We conducted an international survey of patients with SLE to assess their access, preference and trust in various health information sources pre-COVID-19 and during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods Patients with SLE were recruited from 18 observational cohorts, and patients self-reporting SLE were recruited through five advocacy organisations. Respondents completed an online survey from June 2020 to December 2021 regarding the sources of health information they accessed in the 12 months preceding (pre-11 March 2020) and during (post-11 March 2020) the pandemic. Multivariable logistic regressions assessed factors associated with accessing news and social media post-11 March 2020, and self-reporting negative impacts from health information accessed through these sources.Results Surveys were completed by 2111 respondents; 92.8% were female, 76.6% had postsecondary education, mean (SD) age was 48.8 (14.0) years. Lupus specialists and family physicians were the most preferred sources pre-11 March 2020 and post-11 March 2020, yet were accessed less frequently (specialists: 78.5% pre vs 70.2% post, difference −8.3%, 95% CI −10.2% to −6.5%; family physicians: 57.1% pre vs 50.0% post, difference −7.1%, 95% CI −9.2% to −5.0%), while news (53.2% pre vs 62.1% post, difference 8.9%, 95% CI 6.7% to 11.0%) and social media (38.2% pre vs 40.6% post, difference 2.4%, 95% CI 0.7% to 4.2%) were accessed more frequently post-11 March 2020 vs pre-11 March 2020. 17.2% of respondents reported negative impacts from information accessed through news/social media. Those outside Canada, older respondents or with postsecondary education were more likely to access news media. Those in Asia, Latin America or younger respondents were more likely to access social media. Those in Asia, older respondents, males or with postsecondary education in Canada, Asia or the USA were less likely to be negatively impacted.Conclusions Physicians, the most preferred and trusted sources, were accessed less frequently, while news and social media, less trusted sources, were accessed more frequently post-11 March 2020 vs pre-11 March 2020. Increasing accessibility to physicians, in person and virtually, may help reduce the consequences of accessing misinformation/disinformation.

Following the 2004 Indian Ocean and the 2011 Tohoku earthquakes and tsunamis, there has been steady progress in tsunami science and preparedness worldwide. Currently, there are four Tsunami Warning and Mitigation Systems as Intergovernmental Coordination Groups (ICGs) coordinated by IOC/UNESCO. They include tsunami monitoring, warning, and response. They are mostly based on scientific knowledge including tsunami hazard assessments, 24/7 monitoring systems, agreed operational standard procedures (SOPs), redundant communication and community response mechanisms. Costa Rica has greatly increased its tsunami preparedness during the past six years, after the creation of SINAMOT (Sistema Nacional de Monitoreo de Tsunamis). SINAMOT works by characterizing the tsunami threat, encouraging, and supporting community preparedness, strengthening the existing tsunami warning SOPs and maintaining the sea level monitoring network. SINAMOT articulates with stakeholders and decision makers such as seismic monitoring networks, national and local government, emergency managers and committees. Four communities in Costa Rica have been recognized as Tsunami Ready by IOC/UNESCO, four more are recognized with pending guidelines and five more are working on fulfilling the requirements. Despite all the progress made, there is still plenty of work to do to have a safe and predictable ocean regarding tsunamis. Atypical tsunami sources are not yet incorporated in hazard assessments, there are many gaps in sea level monitoring, and capacity building is required in many aspects so that developing countries can be more autonomous in their tsunami preparedness and response. Our major challenges today worldwide are with staffing and funding, both to kick-off and to sustain the mentioned activities. Specifically, Costa Rica requires more physical oceanographers and geoscientists working on tsunami science and more funding to study the ocean (including sea level gauges and tsunami hazards assessment) to support the tsunami and other coastal hazard warning systems. This requires working together with communities and stakeholders to increase tsunami preparedness.

Abstract Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) has gained prominence as an anti-corrosive pigment. The performance of anti-corrosive coatings based on Nb2O5 was tested in an environment with an acid atmosphere and at high temperatures. For comparison, SAE 1020 carbon steel samples were coated with two anti-corrosive coatings based on Nb2O5: applied by thermal spray and epoxy paint. The samples were partially immersed in the laboratory for 720 h and 1440 h in a 40% (v/v) H2SO4 at 25°C, 60°C, and 80°C. An in-situ evaluation was carried out of chemical industry installations over 4383 h in microclimates with the presence of corrosive agents at temperatures up to 70°C. The results obtained showed that the Nb2O5 coatings applied by thermal spray offer better anti-corrosive performance under immersive conditions. In contrast, under conditions submitted to steam, both the Nb2O5 coatings applied by thermal spraying and epoxy-Nb2O5 paint show excellent anti-corrosive behavior.

This self-reflective article describes my experience as a disabled-Latino faculty member in a teacher preparation program at a minority-serving urban university. This personal narrative of the physical, emotional, attitudinal, and resource aspects of the author's experience highlights barriers and challenges experienced in the educational and working environment while identifying strategies that assisted in overcoming these barriers. The article specifically relates my progression through my teaching career as I encounter issues of equality and diversity. With this article, disabled faculty and other minority groups are encouraged to incorporate practices that encourage teacher candidates to explore teaching practices for diverse populations in urban settings.

Abstract Natal dispersal, the movement between the birth and the first breeding site, has been rarely studied in long-lived territorial birds with a long-lasting pre-breeding stage. Here we benefited from the long-term monitoring programs of six populations of Egyptian vultures (Neophron percnopterus) from Spain and France to study how the rearing environment determines dispersal. For 124 vultures, we recorded a median dispersal distance of 48 km (range 0–656 km). Linear models were used to assess the effect of population and individual traits on dispersal distance at two spatial scales. Dispersal distances were inversely related to vulture density in the natal population, suggesting that birds perceive the abundance of conspecifics as a signal of habitat quality. This was particularly true for declining populations, so increasing levels of opportunistic philopatry seemed to arise in high density contexts as a consequence of vacancies created by human-induced adult mortality. Females dispersed further than males, but males were more sensitive to the social environment, indicating different dispersal tactics. Both sexes were affected by different individual attributes simultaneously and interactively with this social context. These results highlight that complex phenotype-by-environment interactions should be considered for advancing our understanding of dispersal dynamics in long-lived organisms.

Abstract Background The use of great apes (GA) in invasive biomedical research is one of the most debated topics in animal ethics. GA are, thus far, the only animal group that has frequently been banned from invasive research; yet some believe that these bans could inaugurate a broader trend towards greater restrictions on the use of primates and other animals in research. Despite ongoing academic and policy debate on this issue, there is no comprehensive overview of the reasons advanced for or against restricting invasive research with GA. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review of the reasons reported in the academic literature on this topic. Methods Seven databases were searched for articles published in English. Two authors screened the titles, abstracts, and full texts of all articles. Two journals specialized in animal ethics, and the reference lists of included articles were subsequently also reviewed. Results We included 60 articles, most of which were published between 2006 and 2016. Twenty-five articles argued for a total ban of GA research, 21 articles defended partial restrictions, and 14 articles argued against restrictions. Overall, we identified 110 reason types, 74 for, and 36 against, restricting GA research. Reasons were grouped into nine domains: moral standing, science, welfare, public and expert attitudes, retirement and conservation, respect and rights, financial costs, law and legal status, and longer-term consequences. Conclusion Our review generated five main findings. First, there is a trend in the academic debate in favor of restricting GA research that parallels worldwide policy changes in the same direction. Second, in several domains (e.g., moral standing, and respect and rights), the reasons were rather one-sided in favor of restrictions. Third, some prominent domains (e.g., science and welfare) featured considerable engagement between opposing positions. Fourth, there is low diversity and independence among authors, including frequent potential conflicts of interests in articles defending a strong position (i.e., favoring a total ban or arguing against restrictions). Fifth, scholarly discussion was not the norm, as reflected in a high proportion of non-peer-reviewed articles and authors affiliated to non-academic institutions.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the functional outcomes of patients diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) older than 60 years, compared with those of patients of age 40 years or younger. Methods This was a retrospective review of patients with FAI who underwent hip arthroscopy between 2010 and 2015. The patients were adults aged over 60 years with Tönnis ≤ 1 matched in a 1:1 ratio with adults aged 40 years or younger, according to the type of deformity (cam, pincer, or mixed), sex, and the date when the surgery was performed. Results Thirty-four patients were included in each group. The mean age was 30.6 ± 6.9 years and 65.6 ± 4.6 years in the control and case groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between the groups at 1-year follow-up (p > 0.05). In the group with older patients (case group), we observed a change in the total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score from 46.3 to 22.0 in the 1st postoperative year, while the control cases improved in the WOMAC score from 38.1 to 7.2 in relation to the preoperative stage. Conclusion In the group of patients ≤ 40 years old, a considerable change was observed in the WOMAC score without a statistical significance compared with the > 60 years group. This observation suggests that hip arthroscopy is beneficial when there is an appropriate selection of patients with FAI, regardless the age of the patient.

A building faces several challenges across its lifecycle stages. Challenges such as production inefficiency and inadequate waste management hinder advancement in the construction industry. Furthermore, the sector has emerged as one of the largest producers of waste in the world, which can lead to detrimental impacts on the economy and the environment. Conventional approaches are insufficient to eradicate these concerns. Thus, practitioners have sought to implement novel methods to ameliorate the construction process. In this regard, design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) and design for deconstruction (DfD) have gained prominence, as studies have elucidated the methods’ unprecedented potential to wholly transform the construction process and mitigate the unwanted impacts brought about by the industry. This study identified the applications and benefits of DfMA and DfD in construction, as well as recent developments and research gaps, through a literature review, using Scopus as the primary database and MATLAB for conducting data text analytics. The current body of knowledge necessitates a further assessment of the following research gaps: (1) development of standard construction-oriented DfMA guidelines; (2) corroboration of the developed DfMA tools through practical application; (3) integration of these holistic design approaches with emerging technologies, such as additive manufacturing and digital fabrication; (4) comparison of structures constructed using DfMA and DfD with structures built with conventional approaches; (5) comprehensive application of DfD guidelines to structural systems; (6) integration of DfMA and DfD; (7) execution of sustainability assessment studies to evaluate the impact of DfMA and DfD; and (8) identification of solutions to the barriers to DfMA and DfD uptake in construction.

Nanostructured dipeptide self-assemblies exhibiting quantum confinement are of great interest due to their potential applications in the field of materials science as optoelectronic materials for energy harvesting devices. Cyclic dipeptides are an emerging outstanding group of ring-shaped dipeptides, which, because of multiple interactions, self-assemble in supramolecular structures with different morphologies showing quantum confinement and photoluminescence. Chiral cyclic dipeptides may also display piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity properties with potential applications in new sources of nano energy. Among those, aromatic cyclo-dipeptides containing the amino acid tryptophan are wide-band gap semiconductors displaying the high mechanical rigidity, photoluminescence and piezoelectric properties to be used in power generation. In this work, we report the fabrication of hybrid systems based on chiral cyclo-dipeptide L-Tryptophan-L-Tryptophan incorporated into biopolymer electrospun fibers. The micro/nanofibers contain self-assembled nano-spheres embedded into the polymer matrix, are wide-band gap semiconductors with 4.0 eV band gap energy, and display blue photoluminescence as well as relevant piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties with coefficients as high as 57 CN−1 and 35×10−6 Cm−2K−1, respectively. Therefore, the fabricated hybrid mats are promising systems for future thermal sensing and energy harvesting applications.

Construction companies usually record customer complaints as unstructured texts, resulting in unsuitable information to understand defect occurrences. Moreover, complaint databases are often manually classified, which is time-consuming and error-prone. However, previous studies have not provided guidance on how to improve customer complaint data collection and analysis. This research aims to devise an information management model for customer complaints in residential projects. Using Design Science Research, a study was undertaken at a Brazilian residential building company. Multiple sources of evidence were used, including interviews, participant observations, and analysis of an existing database. Natural language processing (NLP) was used to build a word menu for customers to lodge a complaint. Moreover, a recommendation system was proposed based on machine learning (ML) and hierarchical defect classification. The system was designed to indicate which defects should be investigated during inspections. The main outcome of this investigation is an information management model that provides an effective classification system for customer complaints, supported by artificial intelligence (AI) applications that improve data collection, and introduce some degree of automation to warranty services. The main theoretical contribution of the study is the use of advanced data management approaches for managing complaints in residential building projects, resulting in the combination of inputs from technical and customer perspectives to support decision-making.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients frequently develop diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) which are generally infected by a community of microorganisms, mainly Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These bacteria exhibit a multi-drug resistance profile and biofilm-forming ability which represent a hurdle in the treatment of diabetic foot infections (DFI). We aimed to evaluate the potential of Nisin Z, an antimicrobial peptide (AMP), as an alternative treatment for severe DFI. Nisin Z shows antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and an increased antibacterial effect against Gram-negatives when added to EDTA. As such, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), Minimum Biofilm Inhibitory Concentration (MBIC), and Minimum Biofilm Eradication Concentration (MBEC) were determined for Nisin Z, Nisin Z + EDTA (0.4%), and Nisin Z + EDTA incorporated into guar gum, in order to test its efficacy against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolated from the same DFU. Results showed that Nisin Z added to the chelation agent EDTA displayed higher antibacterial and bacteriostatic efficacy against mono and dual co-cultures of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, and higher antibiofilm efficiency against monocultures. Nisin Z was moderately cytotoxic at 200 µg/mL. Prospect in vivo studies are needed to confirm the potential of Nisin Z supplemented with EDTA to be used as a complement to conventional antibiotic therapy for severe DFI.

The origin of life must have included an abiotic stage of carbon redox reactions that involved electron transport chains and the production of lifelike patterns. Chemically oscillating reactions (COR) are abiotic, spontaneous, out-of-equilibrium, and redox reactions that involve the decarboxylation of carboxylic acids with strong oxidants and strong acids to produce CO2 and characteristic self-similar patterns. Those patterns have circular concentricity, radial geometries, characteristic circular twins, colour gradients, cavity structures, and branching to parallel alignment. We propose that COR played a role during the prebiotic cycling of carboxylic acids, furthering the new model for geology where COR can also explain the patterns of diagenetic spheroids in sediments. The patterns of COR in Petri dishes are first considered and compared to those observed in some eukaryotic lifeforms. The molecular structures and functions of reactants in COR are then compared to key biological metabolic processes. We conclude that the newly recognised similarities in compositions and patterns warrant future research to better investigate the role of halogens in biochemistry; COR in life-forms, including in humans; and the COR-stage of prebiotic carbon cycling on other planets, such as Mars.

The trans-A2B-corrole series was prepared starting with 5-(pentafluorophenyl)dipyrromethene, which was then reacted with respective aryl-substituted aldehyde by Gryko synthesis. It was further characterized by HRMS and electrochemical methods. In addition, we investigated experimental photophysical properties (absorption, emission by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence) in several solvents and TDDFT calculations, aggregation, photostability and reactive oxygen species generation (ROS), which are relevant when selecting photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy and many other photo-applications. In addition, we also evaluated the biomolecule-binding properties with CT-DNA and HSA by spectroscopy, viscometry and molecular docking calculations assays.
