Eastern Europe and in particular Russia experienced persistent high temperatures coupled with high rainfall deficits which impacted winter crops and jeopardized final yields. Mid-August, also in western Mediterranean countries, extreme temperatures were recorded. Abundant rain in eastern EU (in July) and central EU (in August) hampered the harvesting and affected the quality of the grain. Favourable rains occurred in September in southern Italy, southern France and eastern EU. Soft wheat yields are good in Spain (+ 1% compared to 2009) and Romania (+ 3%), but quite low in Portugal (- 8%), Bulgaria (-1 %), France and Germany (around -8%). Durum wheat in Spain is forecast at 1.9 t/ha (- 4%). For barley, good yields are expected in Bulgaria (+66 %) and Spain (+ 4%); on the contrary the situation is particularly unfavourable in The Netherlands, Slovakia, Cyprus, Portugal and Denmark. Grain maize yield is forecast at +33% above the figure for 009 in Bulgaria; +15% in Romania but -11% in Germany and -10% in Belgium. HIGHLIGHT Mild thermal conditions occurred in the major area of western and northern Europe. Colder than average weather conditions characterized in most of the Balkan Peninsula and Turkey. November proved to be one of the driest in several countries. The long lasting water deficiency affects adversely the winter crops from East-Germany to Ukraine. Weather forecast: Warmer than usual in majority of Europe except British Isles. Period of analysis 21 March - 10 April 2011 Starting from the beginning of April the weather turned warm in almost all Europe. Thermal sums exceeded the average by +30-40% and this in conjunction with scarce rainfall and high irradiance levels led to a strong transpirative demand. On the contrary in the East (Russia especially) rainfall were abundant and the thermal anomalies rather negative. In the next few days the Atlantic regions will be warmer than usual, whereas a relative cold air intrusion is forecast in central and eastern Europe. Large areas of Europe will experience only scarce rain whereas in the Black Sea area slightly wetter than usual conditions can be expected, JRC.DDG.H.4-Monitoring agricultural resources

HIGHLIGHT The mean temperatures were higher than the long term average in the western and northern regions of Europe. On the contrary the Balkan Peninsula and Turkey experienced a colder autumn. Scarce precipitation was recorded in several places in Central and Eastern Europe. Forecast air temperatures above the long-term average in western and northern Europe, lower than average temperatures in central Europe and areas around Black Sea. HIGHLIGHT The third dekad of June was warm except for the basin of the Black Sea, and wet in Ukraine and Germany. With the beginning of July Europe experienced lower temperatures and dry conditions with the exception of Denmark, Germany, Poland, Belarus and Russia. Any rain is forecasted within next 10 days for Spain, Turkey and Russia, and slightly higher temperatures are foreseen in Central and Eastern Europe. First dekad of March was particularly colder compared to the seasonal average values, but during the second dekad the temperatures were generally higher than usual conditions in most regions across Europe. About water supply, Italy faced intensive rainfall during this period. The cereal campaign in North Africa was characterised by negative rainfall supply and distribution in the west, ranging to positive conditions in the east. Morocco was clearly impacted by drought conditions in the regions of Tensif, Centre and Oriental. Some regions in western Algeria were also impacted, but the unfavourable conditions were more than compensated by good conditions in eastern Algeria. Winter cereals are progressing well and above-average yields are forecast. For summer crops, which made a positive start to the season, the forecasts are still based on historical trends, JRC.D.5-Food Security

The favourable cropping season for winter and spring cereals concluded with very high yields. Summer crop yields are also expected to be high and close to records. Grain maize yield has been impacted by late sowing and dry conditions in central Ukraine; nevertheless, yield forecasts are largely above average., JRC.D.5-Food Security

The yield forecast for winter wheat is similar to the previous year, but spring wheat – and particularly spring barley – are delivering better; yield expectations are exceeding the 5-year average. The water supply to grain maize was problematic during the vegetative period, but proved to be sufficient during the flowering and early grain-filling stage, with a positive yield outlook at country level., JRC.D.5-Food Security

The absence of severe winter extremes got cereal production off to a good start. From early February, mostly above-average temperatures and adequate precipitation supply continued to provide favourable conditions for crop growth in European Russia. However, since late May, winter crops have been exposed to dry and hot weather conditions, which could have negative effects on yield formation. Nevertheless, because of the good start, yield forecasts for winter wheat and winter barley are still above the five-year average., JRC.D.5-Food Security

Winter cereal and spring barley yield forecasts are close to a record high; however, conditions observed towards the end of the cropping season were less beneficial, with warm temperatures during grain filling and a rain surplus foremost in western oblasts., JRC.D.5-Food Security

The season started with a good supply of rain during autumn and the first vegetative phases, but this was followed by more dry conditions especially in Morocco where conditions need to be closely monitored. A considerable rain surplus has been recorded in parts of Algeria and Tunisia. Thermal conditions and water supply have been adequate in most of Kazakhstan for the emergence and early growth of spring cereals. Our analysis suggests slightly above-average yield potential for spring cereals. Winter wheat (which is mainly confined to southern Kazakhstan) is generally also in good shape, with an above-average yield outlook. Some western regions present soil moisture deficits, with reduced yield expectations for winter wheat., JRC.D.5-Food Security

All crops are forecast above the five-year average, as well as above last year’s yields, following a mostly favourable season., JRC.D.5-Food Security

According to the Bulletin - Crop monitoring in Europe, hot and regionally dry conditions negatively impacted the final part of the - hitherto very positive - summer crops growing season in south-eastern Europe. This, combined with continued challenging conditions in large parts of central and western Europe, has resulted in an overall mediocre yield outlook for summer crops at EU level. The yield forecasts for grain maize and sunflowers have both fallen by approximately 4%. The grain maize yield forecast is now practically at the 5-year average. Sunflowers are the only summer crop addressed in the Bulletin that still has a positive yield outlook at EU level, above the 5-year average.
