Abstract

Low-spin states of 184Au have been studied using the β+/EC decay of 184Hg. γ-ray and conversion-electron singles spectra were recorded with 184Hg mass-separated sources. For γ-γ-t and X-γ-t coincidence measurements, mercury nuclei were produced in the 148Sm + 40Ar reaction and transported by a He-jet system. The electron spectra were recorded from 184Hg sources produced at ISOLDE. A level scheme of 184Au including 48 transitions is proposed. The experimental results are interpreted in the frame of a semi-microscopic axial-rotor-plus-two-quasiparticle model developed in the context of the HF+BCS approximation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The β-decay properties of the neutron-deficient nuclei 25Si and 26P have been investigated at the GANIL/LISE3 facility by means of charged-particle and γ-ray spectroscopy. The decay schemes obtained and the Gamow­Teller strength distributions are compared to shell-model calculations based on the USD interaction. B(GT) values derived from the absolute measurement of the β-decay branching ratios give rise to a quenching factor of the Gamow­Teller strength of 0.6. A precise half-life of 43.7 (6) ms was determined for 26P, the β-(2)p decay mode of which is described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Decay-spectroscopy study of the67mFe isomer has been performed at GANIL. This isomer is found to have an energy of 387 keV and a half-life of 75(21) μs. In an experiment performed at the GANIL LISE3 facility, radioactive 27S isotopes have been produced by projectile fragmentation of a 95 AMeV 36Ar primary beam. After selection by means of the LISE3 separator, the isotope of interest was implanted in a silicon-detector telescope where its half-life ( T1/2 = 15.5(15) ms) and its main decay branches were measured. Abstract

A careful investigation of the isomeric transition of the long-lived state at 228.5 keV excitation energy in 80Y has been done. The HIGISOL facility at the Jyväskylä isochronous cyclotron has been used. We used the electron magnetic transporter to prepare an appropriate source and to measure the electron spectra in clean background conditions. The measured internal conversion coefficient αK = 0.50±0.07 allows unambiguous 1- identification for the 228.5 keV first excited isomeric state in 80Y. With a “bare" half-life of 6.8±0.5 s found in this work, this state is strongly populated in the rp-process during X-ray bursts and has therefore to be taken into account in X-ray burst model calculations. However, because of the similarity of the β-decay half-lives of isomeric and ground states, we find a maximum reduction in the effective β-decay lifetime of 80Y of only 17±2%. Our results pave the way for a future investigation of the impact of the isomeric state on the “effective" 80Y proton capture rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An island of isomers have recently been observed on both sides of the N=40 shell below the Ni isotopes. Isomeric states in the 65Fe and 67Fe allow the knowledge of the single particle structure around the νg9/2 shell. Moreover, the excitation energy of the first 2+ and 4+ states in the 68Fe have been established by β-γ correlation. Abstract

Low-lying levels of the 129La isotope have been investigated through the β+/EC decay of 129Ce. The radioactive nuclei were produced in the 94Mo+40Ca reaction at a bombarding energy of 255 MeV and transported with a He-jet system. On-line mass separation was used to select the 129Ce beta-decay γ-γ-t, X- γ- t, e−-γ -t coincidence measurements as well as time multi-analysis were performed. Internal conversion electrons were recorded with a magnetic selector and multipolarities deduced. The level scheme of 129La is discussed and compared with the calculations made in the frame of the neutron-proton Interacting Boson-Fermion Model (IBFM-2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

TheHg nucleus was populated in theGd(S, 4n) reaction at a beam energy of E=159 MeV. Emitted γ-rays were detected with the EUROGAM array comprising 43 Compton-suppressed large volume Ge detectors. The level scheme ofHg has been extended up to an excitation energy of E=10.4 MeV and spin I=34 ħ. Two new structures, made of competing ΔI=1 and ΔI=2 transitions have been observed and their connexions with the low-lying levels established. Their lowest levels are located at 6.304 MeV and 6.879 MeV excitation energy. The experimental results are compared with mean-field HF+BCS calculations. It is proposed that the new structures originate from deformation-aligned quasi-proton excitations π(i * h) and π (h), coupled to rotation-aligned quasi-neutron ν(i) and quasi-proton π(h) excitations. The192Hg nucleus was populated in the160Gd(36S, 4n) reaction at a beam energy of E=159 MeV. A decay level scheme is proposed including states up to 4659.8 keV. IntenseE2 transition cascades have been observed. Abstract

High spin states in103Rh have been studied using the100Mo(7Li, 4n) reaction. Standard in-beam measurements involving singles?-ray,?-?-t coincidences, angular distribution and linear polarization measurements have been performed. A perturbed band based on a 9/2+ state is interpreted as ag9/2 coupled band. A sequence built on a 1/2- state is related to thep1/2 state. At higher excitation energy, in the range 2.2–3.7 MeV, the strong?I=1 cascade observed, connecting negative parity levels, probably arises from states including three quasi-particle configurations.

Abstract

This article presents ruptures and convergences in the processing of Scientific and Technical Information (STI), issued from emerging standards and norms for digital documents. The area of application relates to the activity of the researchers in molecular biology, and more precisely genomics. To apprehend the changes in the processing of STI, three kinds of objects are to be considered: biological objects (that include physical entities, concepts, and their relationships: a physiological fonction, a regulation, a gene, a molecule, etc .), the computer languages and tools, and finally, the digital documents. To mean the ruptures and convergences in the treatment of STI, the above-quoted objects are analyzed according to three phases : (i) An upstream phase of standardization, relating to the emergence of standards or norms, creating a rupture in the pre-existing processing of STI. (ii) A phase of standardization related to the processing of STI, which shows a possible processing of digital documents taking into consideration convergence from standards of the previous phase. (iii) A downstream phase of standardization, which shows new uses and standardization needs, directed towards knowledge integration, cooperative environments, with ad hoc projects and groups creation. We conclude this article by outlining some features of the changes that operated.

The /sup 108/Cd and /sup 106/Cd isotopes have been studied from the beta /sup +//EC decay of /sup 108/In and /sup 106/In. gamma -rays, conversion electrons, gamma - gamma -t and e/sup -/- gamma -t coincidence measurements have been performed. Level schemes of /sup 108/Cd and /sup 106/Cd have been deduced from these results. A 0/sup + / level has been unambiguously established at 1.913 MeV in /sup 108/Cd and a new 0/sup +/ level proposed at 2.035 MeV in /sup 106/Cd. The energies and branching ratios are discussed in terms of vibrator +particles approach, interacting boson approximation and rotor +quasiparticles model. (15 refs).

Abstract

Using an on-line mass isotopic separator operating on nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions, /sup 102/In(T/sub 1/2/=24+4 seconds) has been identified for the first time. Gamma-rays observed in the decays of /sup 103/In to /sup 103/Cd and /sup 102/In to /sup 102/Cd complement previous in-beam experiments on /sup 103/Cd and /sup 102 /Cd. The partial level scheme deduced for /sup 102/Cd has been included in the systematics of ground bands of the even cadmium isotopes. (6 refs).

Abstract

The 129Nd activities were produced by bombarding 92,94Mo targets with 210 or 255 MeV 40Ca beams. Mass identification was made using the IGISOL technique. A measured β-decay half-life of 7(1)s was assigned to 129Nd. A new low-lying level scheme has been built for 129Pr. The 11/2− state is proposed to be isomeric at 383 keV excitation energy. 142. Infrared spectroscopy of serum as a potential diagnostic screening approach for naturally occurring canine osteoarthritis associated with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate infrared (IR) spectroscopy of serum as a screening tool to differentiate dogs affected by naturally occurring osteoarthritis (OA) associated with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) and controls.Method: 104 adult dogs with CrCLR (affected group) and 50 adult control dogs were recruited for this prospective observational study. Serum samples were collected preoperatively from CrCLR dogs and from a subset of these dogs at 4-, and 12-week post-surgical intervention to stabilize the affected stifles. Serum was collected once from control dogs. Dry films were made from serum samples, and IR absorbance spectra acquired. Data preprocessing, principal component analysis and multivariate analysis of covariance were performed to separate samples from the two groups, and to evaluate temporal differences. Weighted logistic regression with L1 regularization method was used to develop a predictive model. Model performance based on an independent test set was evaluated.Results: Spectral data analysis revealed significant separation between the sera of CrCLR and control dogs (P < 0.0001), but not amongst different time points in the OA group. The sensitivity, specificity, AUC and accuracy of the test set were 84.62%, 96.15%, 93.20% and 92.31% respectively.Conclusions: These findings confirm the potential of IR-spectroscopy of serum with chemometrics methods to differentiate controls from dogs with OA associated with CrCLR. This is the first step in development of an economic, and comparatively simple IR-based screening serum test for OA. Abstract

This study evaluated, for the first time, the selection of antibiotic resistance in fecal Escherichia coli, a potential reservoir of genes of resistance, during the prolonged exposure to fluoroquinolones after the implantation of a local drug delivery system (LDDS) in a swine model. Fourteen pigs were randomly assigned to group IM (5 mg/kg/day of intramuscular enrofloxacin — EFX) or LD (surgical implantation of EFX-polymethyl-methacrylate perifemoral implants). Blood samples were collected daily for determination of plasma EFX and ciprofloxacin (CFX) concentrations. Fecal samples were collected daily to determine the E. coli counts and the susceptibility patterns of its isolates as evaluated by antibiotic disk diffusion tests. In both groups, EFX administration significantly reduced the bacterial counts after 2 days. During recolonization, the bacterial counts remained lower than baseline in group IM but not significantly, and almost reached pre-treatment levels in group LD. Susceptibility to EFX, CFX, and nalidixic acid of recolonizing E. coli in LD pigs slightly decreased but remained within the limit of “susceptible” isolates. In contrast, quinolone susceptibility of recolonizing E. coli in IM pigs dropped dramatically (P < 0.0001). In addition, intramuscular exposure to fluoroquinolones significantly decreased the susceptibility of E. coli to ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of a dosing regimen that minimized the intestinal output of fluoroquinolones also minimized the selection of resistance to several classes of antibiotics. This could represent another advantage of LDDS usage compared to long-lasting systemic administration of fluoroquinolones.
