Psychiatric symptoms are frequently reported in Wilson disease (WD); however, systematic assessments with validated measures are lacking.We aim to report the prevalence and clinical correlates for major depressive disorder (MDD) as resulting from a multisite international WD registry.All patients enrolled in the WD registry received structured psychiatric evaluations (MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, Perceived Stress Scale), laboratory tests, hepatology, and neurological assessments. We present the analysis of the data collected at enrollment for the first 3 years (N = 62).Thirty-seven percent (23) had a lifetime history (MDD), and 6% (4) met the criteria for an active major depressive episode. Depression was self-reported in 30.51% (19) at WD diagnosis. Patients with MDD had worse mental health quality-of-life (QOL) scores (median 43 vs 53.6, P = 0.006), higher severe anxiety (13.04% vs 0), higher perceived stress (median 18 vs 9, P0.003), and higher levels of neuroticism (median 8 vs 5.0, P = 0.002). We found no significant difference in physical health QOL and severity of neurological or liver disease. There was no significant difference in copper parameters or liver tests in those with MDD and without. The limitations of our study consist the small sample size, the cross-sectional report, and the lack of brain copper measurements.Lifetime MDD is highly prevalent in WD and associated with worse mental health QOL. We did not find a significant association among liver disease, neurological disease laboratory tests, and MDD. Screening for depression should be considered in patients with WD.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused drastic social changes for many people, including separation from friends and coworkers, enforced close contact with family, and reductions in mobility. Here we assess the extent to which people's evolutionarily-relevant basic motivations and goals—fundamental social motives such as Affiliation and Kin Care—might have been affected. To address this question, we gathered data on fundamental social motives in 42 countries (N = 15,915) across two waves, including 19 countries (N = 10,907) for which data were gathered both before and during the pandemic (pre-pandemic wave: 32 countries, N = 8998; 3302 male, 5585 female; Mage = 24.43, SD = 7.91; mid-pandemic wave: 29 countries, N = 6917; 2249 male, 4218 female; Mage = 28.59, SD = 11.31). Samples include data collected online (e.g., Prolific, MTurk), at universities, and via community sampling. We found that Disease Avoidance motivation was substantially higher during the pandemic, and that most of the other fundamental social motives showed small, yet significant, differences across waves. Most sensibly, concern with caring for one's children was higher during the pandemic, and concerns with Mate Seeking and Status were lower. Earlier findings showing the prioritization of family motives over mating motives (and even over Disease Avoidance motives) were replicated during the pandemic. Finally, well-being remained positively associated with family-related motives and negatively associated with mating motives during the pandemic, as in the pre-pandemic samples. Our results provide further evidence for the robust primacy of family-related motivations even during this unique disruption of social life.

Individual differences research on masculine honor has heavily focused on men's aggressive responses to insults by male strangers, but much less is known whether honor-oriented individuals (men and women) are less forgiving – express more avoidant and vengeful, but less benevolent motivations – towards peers following insults, and their underlying concerns in being less forgiving. Using 200 British participants (dignity group) in Study 1, and 146 British (dignity group) and 178 Turkish (honor group) participants in Study 2, we examined whether (1) masculine honor-oriented individuals are less forgiving of peers after insults, and (2) this association is indirectly explained by concern with avoiding loss of social respect or maintaining personal integrity. Results showed that masculine honor-oriented individuals were less forgiving of insulting peers, which was indirectly explained by concern with losing respect, but not keeping personal integrity. We also report that the presence of a third-party audience did not have an effect on the observed pattern of relationships. These findings expand our understanding of why, despite the many benefits of forgiveness, some individuals may be less willing to forgive people who have hurt them.

In honor cultures, maintaining a positive moral reputation (e.g., being known as an honest person) is highly important, whereas in dignity cultures, self-respect (e.g., competence and success) is strongly emphasized. Depending on their cultural background, people respond differently to threats to these two dimensions of honor. In two studies, we examined the effects of morality-focused and competence-focused threats on people’s goal pursuit in two honor cultures (Turkey, Southern United States, and Latinx) and in a dignity culture (Northern United States). In Study 1, Turkish participants were more likely to reject a highly qualified person as a partner in a future task if that person threatened their morality (vs. no-threat), even though this meant letting go of the goal of winning an award. Participants from the U.S. honor and dignity groups, however, were equally likely to choose the people who gave them threatening and neutral feedback. In Study 2, Turkish and U.S. honor participants were more likely to persist in a subsequent goal after receiving a morality threat (vs. no-threat), whereas U.S. dignity participants were more likely to persist in a subsequent goal after receiving a competence threat (vs. no-threat). These results show that people’s responses to honor threats are influenced by the dominant values of their culture and by the tools that are available to them to potentially restore their reputation (e.g., punishing the offender vs. working hard on a different task). This research can have implications for multicultural contexts in which people can have conflicting goals such as diverse work environments.
