Background Overweight and obesity are associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers, inflammatory diseases, and lower quality of life. Recent investigations have shown that diet can modify these complications and improve quality of life. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate associations between Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (EDII) with quality of life and serum inflammatory markers. Methods In the current cross-sectional study, a total of 280 females from health centers in Tehran, Iran (2018) were selected for the study using a multistage cluster random sampling method. The EDII was computed based on dietary intake, assessed by a previously validated 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Before calculating EDII, a residual method was used to adjust energy intake. SF-36 questionnaires were used for evaluating quality of life. Concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were determined using collected serum samples. Results The mean age of the study participants was 36.30 ± 8.05 years. Analyses were performed using multivariable linear regression, adjusting for age, weight, physical activity, smoking status, economic status and employment status. Objective Resting metabolic rate (RMR) accounts for most of the daily energy expenditure. The low-carb diet attenuates decreases in RMR. This study aims to investigate the relationship between a low-carb diet and resting metabolic rate status. Methods We enrolled 304 overweight and obese women in this cross-sectional study. BMI, fat mass, fat-free mass, visceral fat, insulin level were assessed. RMR was measured using indirect calorimetry. A low carbohydrate diet score was measured using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Results Our results showed no relationship between LCDS and DNR even after adjust for confounders (Inc. RMR: OR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.92–1.01, P = 0.20; Dec. RMR: OR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.94-1.00, P = 0.14). Some components of LCDS had significant differences with DNR, such as carbohydrate and Dec. RMR in adjusted model (OR: 1.62; 95% CI: 0.98–1.37, P = 0.08), MUFA and Dec. RMR in adjusted model (OR: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.21–1.10, P = 0.08) and refined grain and Inc. RMR in crude model (OR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.77–0.99, P = 0.04). Conclusion Our study showed that there is no association between a low-carb diet and RMR status but carbohydrate, MUFA, and refined grain had a significant relationship.

Summary Aim RBP4, Vaspin and omentin-1 are adipokines, which play an important role in the development of obesity-related complications. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different kinds of fat intake on adipokine levels in obese women. Methods A total of 272 obese women (BMI ≥ 30) were included in the current cross-sectional study, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Body composition was measured using a body composition analyzer. For the measurement of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), vaspin and omentin-1 serum concentrations, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used. Dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day 24-h dietary recall. Results Statistically significant differences were found between polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFAs) and linoleic acid intake and vaspin and omentin-1 levels. In addition, there were found statistically significant relationships between cholesterol, monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFAs) and total fat intakes with omentin-1 levels. Also, RBP4 and vaspin levels were different significant with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake. Moreover, the results revealed that there were statistically significant differences between RBP4 levels and α-linolenic acid and oleic acid intake. Conclusion This study revealed that by examining RBP4, vaspin and omentin-1 as adipokines, a novel link between fat intakes and adipokine levels was found.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between an LCD and RMR status among overweight and obese women. We enrolled 291 overweight and obese women in this cross-sectional study. Body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat-free mass, visceral fat, and insulin level were assessed. RMR was measured using indirect calorimetry. LCD score (LCDS) was measured using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Analysis of variance, independent sample t-test, and Multinomial logistic regression tests were used. Results showed no relationship between LCDS and deviation of normal RMR (DNR) even after adjust for confounders (increased [Inc.] RMR: odds ratio [OR], 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.92-1.01; p = 0.20; decreased [Dec.] RMR: OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.94-1.00; p = 0.14). Some components of LCDS had no significant association with DNR, such as carbohydrate and Dec. RMR in adjusted model (OR, 1.62; 95% CI, 0.98-1.37; p = 0.08) and monounsaturated fatty acids and Dec. RMR in adjusted model (OR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.21-1.10, p = 0.08). However, refined grains had a significant association with Inc. RMR in crude model (OR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.77-0.99, p = 0.04). There is no association between LCDS and RMR status.

Aim This study aimed to test the dose-response relationship between fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels and risk of prostate cancer. Methods A systematic search was done of PubMed and Scopus from their inception up to January 2017. Prospective and retrospective studies reporting risk estimates of prostate cancer for two or more categories of blood glucose levels were identified, and two independent authors extracted the information. Relative risk (RR) was calculated using random-effects models and pooled. Results Ten prospective cohort studies, one nested case-control study, one case-cohort study and three case-control studies (total n =1,214,947) involving 12,494 cases of prostate cancer were reviewed. The pooled RR of prostate cancer for the highest vs. lowest category of FBG was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.78–0.98, I 2 =25.5%, n =15 studies). A 10mg/dL increment in FBG level was not associated with risk of prostate cancer (0.98, 95% CI: 0.96–1.00, I 2 =45.4%, n =11 studies). Subgroup analyses yielded a significant inverse association only in the subgroup of cohort studies. Non-linear dose-response meta-analysis showed a very slight decrement in risk with increasing FBG levels. Sensitivity analyses using cohort studies showed a steep decrease in risk along with an increase in FBG from baseline levels of ≈70mg/dL across prediabetes and diabetes ranges. Conclusion Higher FBG levels are associated with lower risk of prostate cancer in cohort studies, but not in case-control studies, findings that limit interpretation of our present results.

Purpose/introduction: Migraine is a common disorder, with attacks causing neurological dysfunction and pain. Many foods are involved in reducing the severity of migraine attacks. This study aimed to assess the effects that adhering to the Dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet had on headache severity and duration among women suffering from migraine.Methods and materials: Two hundred and sixty-six women (18-45 years) were enrolled after being referred to a headache clinic for the first time. Dietary intake was assessed daily using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were assessed for all cases, as well as headache duration of each attack; Visual Analog Scale and Migraine Disability Assessment questionnaires were evaluated by a neurologist.Results: The mean age, weight, and height of the study participants were 34.32 (SD 7.86) years, 69.41 (13.02) kg, and 161 (0.05) cm, respectively. The results of analysis in the crude model showed that individuals with the greatest adherence to the DASH diet displayed a 30% lower prevalence in severe headaches, compared to those with the lowest adherence (OR=0.70, 95%CI=0.49-0.99, P

Objective Previous studies have demonstrated that the supplementation of Anethum graveolens (dill) could affect the metabolic indices. Thus, the present study summarizes all of the published clinical studies which evaluate the efficacy of dill administration on cardiovascular risk factors. Methods The clinical trials were found using Scopus, Embase, PubMed and ISI Web of Science databases; these were searched to infinity until August 2020. Mean differences (MD) were pooled using a random-effects model. Publication bias, sensitivity analysis, and heterogeneity were assessed using standard methods. Results Results demonstrated that the administration of dill and its derivatives, led to a significant change in the fasting insulin (WMD: −2.34 mg/dl; 95% CI: −3.70, −0.99; P = 0.001), HOMA-IR (WMD: −1.07; 95% CI: −1.96, −0.17; P = 0.019), and LDL serum levels (WMD: −9.36 mg/dl; 95% CI: −14.45, −4.27; P Conclusion Dill administration significantly reduces fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, and LDL levels.

A descriptive cross-sectional study. The burden of care among primary caregivers of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) is affected by different factors. We aimed to evaluate the level of burden among caregivers and the association between the caregiver burden and sociodemographic factors of SCI individuals and their caregivers. Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Research Center, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. The Zarit caregiver burden interview was used to evaluate the level of burden in caregivers through structured face-to-face interviews with 163 individuals with SCI, who were referred to receive outpatient rehabilitation, and their caregivers. The mean of caregivers’ burden score was 38.9±15.2 and 11.7% reported no or little burden, 43.6% reported ‘mild-to-moderate’ burden, 33.1% reported ‘moderate-to-severe’ burden and 11.7% reported ‘severe’ burden of care. There was relationship between the level of injury (P=0.010) and occupational status (P=0.041) in SCI individuals and caregiver burden score. Background Recent studies have shown that the risks of chronic diseases resulting from high-risk alleles, such as cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome (MetS), can be affected by various dietary patterns. Among the genes affected by environmental factors are those associated with vitamin D binding protein (DBP). Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 265 apparently healthy adults aged 18–50. MetS was defined according to the adult treatment panel III criteria. Major dietary patterns were determined using factor analysis on 24 food groups, using a valid and reliable 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). DBP genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reactions–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP). Results After adjustment for confounder factors, results demonstrated strong interactions between, on the one hand, a high intake of healthy pattern and DBP haplotype (rs7041/rs4588 major alleles) and on the other, low MetS odds (OR = 0.64, 95% CI 0.47–0.87, P ≤ 0.001), serum triglyceride levels (OR = 0.72, 95% CI 0.56–0.93, P = 0.01) and fasting blood glucose (OR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.14–0.96, P = 0.04). Also, individuals with a higher adherence to traditional dietary patterns demonstrated reduced odds of high waist circumference among the major allele (low-risk allele) carriers of rs7041/rs4588 (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.55–0.88, P = 0. 003). Interactions were also seen between high traditional pattern intake and DBP haplotype elevated blood pressure odds (OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.02–1.68, P = 0.02). Conclusions The present evidence indicates that interactions between healthy dietary patterns with DBP haplotypes (Gc 1F, Gc 1S and Gc 2) and traditional dietary patterns with DBP haplotypes may be effective in reducing the odds of MetS and some of its components through consuming healthy food groups and inherited low risk alleles.

Previous studies have shown that the minor allele (C allele) for melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) rs17782313, may be associated with incidence of obesity and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Moreover, inflammation caused by the diet has been shown to have, potentially, unfavorable effects on CVD risk. This study used a linear regression model to investigate the interactions between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and MC4R gene variants on markers of CVD.This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 266 Iranian women with overweight and obesity. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with 147 items was used to assess dietary intakes. Individuals were categorized into three groups based on rs17782313 genotype. Participants were also divided into four groups based on DII score.Higher quartiles of DII were associated with lower levels of high density lipoproteins (HDL) (p = 0.01) and higher levels of triglycerides (TG) (p = 0.04). There was a significant difference between genotypes for insulin (p 0.001), HOMA index (p 0.001), total body mineral content (p = 0.03), and bone mineral content (BMC) (p = 0.04). Our findings also showed significant interactions between DII score and rs17782313 polymorphism on total cholesterol, total body mineral content, BMC, soft lean mass (SLM), fat free mass (FFM) (p = 0.03), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and basal metabolic rate (BMR).Higher DII scores were associated with lower HDL levels and higher TG levels, respectively; whilst significant differences were observed between the genotypes of rs17782313 for insulin and HOMA index, total body mineral content, and BMC. These results highlight that dietary compositions, gene variants, and their interaction, should be considered in CVD risk assessment.

Introduction: Risk of diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) is variable between individuals due to different metabolic phenotypes. In present network meta-analysis, we aimed to evaluate the risk of T2DM related with current definitions of metabolic health in different body mass index (BMI) categories. Methods: Relevant articles were collected by systematically searching PubMed and Scopus databases up to 20 March 2018 and for analyses we used a random-effects model. Nineteen prospective cohort studies were included in the analyses and metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW) was considered as the reference group in direct comparison for calculating indirect comparisons in difference type of BMI categories. Results: Total of 199403 participants and 10388 cases from 19 cohort studies, were included in our network meta-analysis. Metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO) group poses highest risk for T2DM development with 10 times higher risk when is compared with MHNW (10.46 95% CI; 8.30, 13.18) and after that Metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW) individuals were at highest risk of T2DM with 7 times higher risk comparing with MHNW (7.25, 95% CI; 5.49, 9.57). Metabolically healthy overweight and obese (MHOW/MHO) individuals have (1.77, 95% CI; 1.33, 2.35) and (3.00, 95% CI; 2.33, 3.85) risk ratio for T2DM development in comparison with MHNW respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion we found that being classified as overweight and obese increased the risk of T2DM in comparison with normal weight. In addition, metabolically unhealthy (MUH) individuals are at higher risk of T2DM in all categories of BMI compared with metabolically healthy individuals.

Background Genome-wide association studies have shown that risk alleles on chromosome 9p21.3 locus, are associated with increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Several epidemiological studies have found that metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with CVDs. Dietary antioxidants also have shown to have potential favorable effects on MetS prevention. This study examined the interactions between rs1333048 genotypes on 9p21 genetic region and Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) on odds of MetS. Methods 263 Tehrani adults were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The MetS was defined according to the ATPIII. Dietary intake was assessed daily using a FFQ with 147 items. Dietary TAC was assessed according to United States Department of Agriculture database for oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Bioelectrical impedance analysis method was used for body analysis and rs1333048 were genotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Participants were categorized into three groups based on rs1333048 genotypes. Results The results demonstrate that, prevalence of C allele was 52.85% and A allele was 47.15%. After adjustment for confunder variable, this study demonstrated an interaction between AA genotype and high Lyophilic oxygen radical absorbance capacity (L-ORAC) and high Hydrophilic oxygen radical absorbance capacity (H-ORAC) intake on low odds of MetS (OR = 0.24, 95% CI = 0.06–0.94, P for interaction = 0.04, OR = 0.26, 95% CI = 0.06–0.99, P for interaction = 0.04). Also, our result indicated, there was no interaction between AA genotype and high total oxygen radical absorbance capacity (T-ORAC) and total phenolic intakes on reduce odds of MetS (OR = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.07–1.10, P for interaction = 0.07, OR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.16–2.07, P for interaction = 0.40) respectively. Conclusion The results of the present study indicate that high L-ORAC and high H-ORAC intake may modify the elevated odds of MetS in AA genotype of rs1333048 on the 9p21 genetic locus.

Objective No studies have examined the contribution of major dietary patterns to MUH phenotypes in obese and overweight people based on Karelis criteria. This study was conducted to evaluate the association of major dietary patterns with MUHOW/O and MHOW/O phenotypes. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 290 overweight and obese women aged 18–50 (BMI≥25 kg/m2). Anthropometric measurements were assessed in all participants. The MH phenotype was defined according to the Karelis criteria. Major dietary patterns were determined using factor analysis of 21 foods groups using a valid and reliable FFQ containing 147 items. Participants' body composition was assessed by BIA. Serum HDL, LDL, TG, insulin, and hs-CRP levels were quantified by ELISA. Results By the use of factor analysis, 3 major dietary patterns were extracted: healthy dietary pattern (HDP), western dietary pattern (WDP) and unhealthy dietary pattern (UNHDP). Binary logistic analysis showed that participants in the in the upper category of WDP had greater odds of MUH phenotype (OR = 2.33, 95%CI = 1.11–4.91, P = 0.02), after confounder factor control. Individuals with high adherence to the UNHDP score had high odds of MUH phenotype (OR = 1.75, 95%CI = 0.98–3.10, P = 0.05), after adjustment for BMI, age, and total EI, compared to those with low adherence. A positive relation was observed between WDP and levels of hs-CRP, HOMA-IR (OR = 1.94, 95%CI = 0.91–4.10, P = 0.05 and OR = 2.53, 95%CI = 1.26–5.11, P = 0.009) as well as a positive association between UHDP and plasma level of LDL (OR = 1.90, 95%CI = 1.04–3.47, P = 0.03), but an inverse association between HDP and hs-CRP level (OR = 0.56, 95%CI = 0.29–0.92, P = 0.03). Conclusions The present evidence indicates various significant associations among major dietary patterns and MUHOW/O phenotypes.

Aim Metabolically Healthy Obese (MHO) is called to obese people that their insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles and inflammatory profiles are favorable, and there are no signs of hypertension and cardio-metabolic diseases. The metabolically unhealthy obese (MUHO) is the opposite. A Body Shape Index (ABSI) is a marker to identifying abdominal obesity that is derived from weight, height and waist circumference (WC). Several studies have reported ABSI is associated with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and higher mortality rate. Materials and methods A total of 305 overweight and obese women were included in the current comparative cross-sectional study. Body composition was measured using body composition analyzer. Blood samples were obtained. The usual food intake of evaluated through the use of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Results The results of this study revealed that there is a significant relationship between ABSI and MHO and MUHO (p = 0.04) and area under the ROC curve was 0.60. Also there is a significant relationship between BMI, fat mass index (FMI), free fat mass index (FFMI), neck circumference (NC), WC, fat mass (FM) and metabolic healthy status (MHS). The largest area under the ROC curve belonged to NC, WC, FM and BMI (0.66). Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that there is a significant relationship between ABSI, BMI, FMI, FFMI, NC, WC, FM and MHS. The largest area under the ROC curve was related to the NC, WC, FM and BMI not ABSI, that means NC, WC, FM and BMI have maximum sensitivity and specificity.

Research into the relationship between food insecurity and weight abnormality has yielded varied and contradictory results. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to examine the association between food insecurity and weight abnormality in adults. Pertinent studies were identified by searching PubMed and Scopus databases, up to February 2018. Data were available from 31 studies. These studies were conducted in 14 different countries. The odds ratio of 115,993 individuals in these studies was pooled for the meta-analysis. The present meta-analysis showed that adults in food-insecure households are more at risk of obesity (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.06–1.23). Subgroup analysis by gender also revealed that women had a higher risk of obesity compared to men in food-insecure households (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.05–1.46). Furthermore, subgroup analysis by food insecurity level implied that a severe level of household food insecurity may be associated with a higher risk of underweight (49%) than overweight (37%) or obesity (29%) among adults. In addition, subgroup analysis revealed that with lower levels of national economic development, the risk of weight abnormality shifted from obesity to underweight. It seems that adults in food-insecure households, especially women, are at higher risk of obesity. The weight abnormality risk may increase with the intensification of the level of food insecurity. Also, the level of economic development is an important factor in the effects of food insecurity on weight status. However, due to the high heterogeneity among studies, the results should be interpreted with caution.

Link between obesity and bone health is controversial. It seems that maybe the difference in metabolic status leads to this difference. We studied relation between metabolically healthy/unhealthy components with bone mineral density. Results showed metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO) phenotypes have better bone status at hip site than metabolically healthy obesity (MHO). Also, component metabolic can effect on BMD in different sites. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare total BMD and L-L4 BMD in MHO and MUHO base on Karelis criteria. We enrolled 272 Iranian obese women and men (BMI ≥ 30). According to Karelis criteria, the participants were grouped base to MHO and MUHO. The body composition and BMD were assessed for all cases. Serum HDL-C, LDL-C, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), fasting blood glucose, homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were quantified by ELISA method. Our results demonstrate MUHO phenotype have high total BMD more than MHO (P = 0.01, CI = 0.12 to 0.21). Also, the results of logistic regression analysis showed MUHO have strongly associated with total BMD (β = −0.42, CI = − 0.31 to − 0.04, P = 0.009), but did not affected L2-L4 BMD (β = − 0.09, CI = − 0.14 to 0.08, P = 0.578); this represents that there was discordance in MUHO subjects. Our evidence implicated that HOMA-IR, high level serum TG, hs-CRP, and low level serum HDL had mediatory effect on relationship between obesity and high BMD at the hip region in MUHO subjects (P
