Abstract

The crystal structure of the title compound, nonaammonium (arsenic decatungstido)(arsenic heptatungstido)diaqua-mu-hydroxo-(hydroxyarsenido)dizirconium hexacosahydrate, which was obtained from the reaction of [NaAs(4)W(40)O(140)](27-) with Zr(IV), has been determined. The anionic complex consists of two hydroxyl-bridged seven-coordinate capped trigonal-prismatic zirconium ions, which are bonded to an [AsW(10)O(36)](9-) anion and to an [AsW(7)O(28)](11-) anion that has two [AsOH](2+) capping units. The asymmetric unit contains half of the complex, with one crystallographically independent Zr atom. Crystallographic m symmetry imposed by the monoclinic C2/m space group gives rise to the asymmetric unit comprising half of the complex with one crystallographically independent Zr atom.

Abstract

Abstract Hydrogel is an attractive material, but its application is limited due to its low mechanical strength. In this study, a tough composite gel could be prepared by synthesizing polymer particles within a polymer network having relatively loose cross-linking. Since the polymer network acts as a dispersion stabilizer during the synthesis of the hydrophobic polymer particles, a large amount of particles could be introduced into the gel without agglomeration. It was suggested that the high level of toughness was induced by the adsorption and desorption of the polymer chains on the surface of the finely packed particles. By using a stimuli-responsive polymer network, elasticity and plasticity of composite gels could be controlled in response to external stimuli, and adhesion on the gel surface could also be modulated.

Abstract

A drawback of acid cleaning as surface finishing of magnesium (Mg) surface is the absence of a protective oxide film on its surface. Acid–alkaline treatment is proposed to enhance the surface corrosion resistance of AMX601 Mg alloy. Acid–alkaline treatment was conducted by first dipping the alloy in HNO3–H3PO4 solution and then immersing the al-loy in NaOH solution. The potentiodynamic polarization test in 0.9% NaCl solution at 37 °C revealed a nobler corro-sion potential of −1.36 VAg/AgCl and a lower corrosion current density of 36.0 µA•cm−2 of the acid–alkaline-treated spec-imen than the acid-treated (−1.44 VAg/AgCl, 89.7 µA•cm−2) and untreated (−1.52 VAg/AgCl, 40.0 µA•cm−2) specimens. Acid treatment induced a significantly higher surface roughness (20 µm) than acid–alkaline (10 µm) and grinding (0.5 µm) treatments because of the selective dissolution of the Mg matrix and the accumulation of intermetallic precipitates. The film formed on the acid–alkaline-treated specimen was thick and free of cracks, whereas that formed on the acid-treated specimen was thin and cleaved. The formation of a protective oxide film and the enrichment of cathodic intermetallic particles on the acid–alkaline-treated specimen enhanced the corrosion resistance of the surface.

Abstract

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of pyrochlore-type Pb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{6}$O'$_{0.55}$, which is a metal without spatial inversion symmetry at room temperature, were investigated. Structural analysis revealed that the structural distortion relevant to the breakdown of the inversion symmetry is dominated by the Pb-O' network but is very small in the Ir-O network. At the same time, gigantic second-harmonic generation signals were observed, which can only occur if the local environment of the Ir 5$d$ electrons features broken inversion symmetry. First-principles electronic structure calculations reveal that the underlying mechanism for this phenomenon is the induction of the noncentrosymmetricity in the Ir 5$d$ bands by the strong hybridization with O' 2$p$ orbitals. Our results stimulate theoretical study of inversion-broken iridates, where exotic quantum states such as a topological insulator and Dirac semimetal are anticipated.

Abstract

We report the first observational search for tau neutrinos from gamma ray bursts (GRBs) using one of the Ashra light collectors. The earth-skimming tau-neutrino technique of imaging Cherenkov tau showers was applied as a detection method. We set stringent upper limits on the tau-neutrino fluence in PeV-EeV region for 3780 s (between 2.83 and 1.78 hours before) and another 3780 s (between 21.2 and 22.2 hours after) surrounding GRB081203A triggered by the Swift satellite. This first search for PeV-EeV tau neutrino complements other experiments in energy range and methodology, and suggests the prologue of "multi-particle astronomy" with a precise determination of time and location., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Introduction Given an increasing use of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors to treat patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the real-world setting, we conducted a prospective observational study (Japan-based Clinical Research Network for Diabetes Registry: J-BRAND Registry) to elucidate the safety and efficacy profile of long-term usage of alogliptin.Research design and methods We registered 5969 patients from April 2012 through September 2014, who started receiving alogliptin (group A) or other classes of oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs; group B), and were followed for 3 years at 239 sites nationwide. Safety was the primary outcome. Symptomatic hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, skin disorders of non-extrinsic origin, severe infections, and cancer were collected as major adverse events (AEs). Efficacy assessment was the secondary outcome and included changes in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin and urinary albumin.Results Of the registered, 5150 (group A: 3395 and group B: 1755) and 5096 (3358 and 1738) were included for safety and efficacy analysis, respectively. Group A patients mostly (>90%) continued to use alogliptin. In group B, biguanides were the primary agents, while DPP-4 inhibitors were added in up to ~36% of patients. The overall incidence of AEs was similar between the two groups (42.7% vs 42.2%). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed the incidence of cancer was significantly higher in group A than in group B (7.4% vs 4.8%, p=0.040), while no significant incidence difference was observed in the individual cancer. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the imbalanced patient distribution (more elderly patients in group A than in group B), but not alogliptin usage per se, contributed to cancer development. The incidence of other major AE categories was with no between-group difference. Between-group difference was not detected, either, in the incidence of microvascular and macrovascular complications. HbA1c and fasting glucose decreased significantly at the 0.5-year visit and nearly plateaued thereafter in both groups.Conclusions Alogliptin as a representative of DPP-4 inhibitors was safe and durably efficacious when used alone or with other OHAs for patients with type 2 diabetes in the real world setting.

Abstract

Introduction: Although treatment with osimertinib confers survival benefits in patients with lung cancer with the EGFR T790M mutation, the mechanism of acquired resistance to osimertinib remains poorly understood. We conducted a prospective observational study to identify the mechanism on the basis of repeated tissue biopsies. Methods: Patients with EGFR-mutated advanced lung cancer with a T790M mutation detected on a tissue biopsy underwent a rebiopsy after developing acquired resistance to osimertinib. Nucleic acids extracted from the biopsy samples were subjected to targeted resequencing (Oncomine Comprehensive Assay), and circulating cell-free DNA (ccfDNA) was analyzed by CAncer Personalized Profiling by deep Sequencing (AVENIO ctDNA Surveillance Kit). Results: Between November 2016 and March 2020, a total of 87 patients were screened. Among them, 44 developed acquired resistance. Of these, 19 samples from rebiopsies and 12 from preosimertinib biopsies were able to be analyzed by an Oncomine Comprehensive Assay. A ccfDNA analysis was performed in 16 patients. Regarding the mechanisms of acquired resistance, structural change in EGFR, namely, C797S, G796S, or L792V, was the most frequent alteration, being observed in 57.9% of the cases. MET gain was observed in 31.6% of the cases, and gains in cell cycle genes were observed in 26.3% of the cases. In addition, we identified GAS6 gain and an ATM mutation in a patient with small-cell transformation and a BRAF V600E mutation in a patient with oligoprogressive disease. Conclusions: A repeated tissue biopsy and a ccfDNA analysis were useful in analyzing the mechanisms underlying acquired resistance. A long treatment history of EGFR TKIs may result in a high percentage of EGFR structural change.

Abstract

A green, rapid, and facile synthesis method of activated carbon was developed and optimized using 50 nm MgO nanoparticle (NP)-based pore templating in tandem with an integrated drying and carbonization-activation heat treatment. TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) were mixed with MgO NPs and KOH, freeze-dried, heat treated first at 350 °C then at 800 °C to get templated activated carbon. Selective pore formation by MgO and KOH resulting in the development of mesopores and micropores, respectively was confirmed. NP-based templating is confirmed to be viable even with continuous heat treatment, and does not affect any transformations during each heat treatment phase. Through optimization for the highest surface area and optimal hierarchical porosity, templated activated carbon had a high specific capacitance of 269 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 with 95.92 % cycle stability after 2000 charge-discharge cycles at 10 A g−1.
