Globally, soils store two to three times as much carbon as currently resides in the atmosphere, and it is critical to understand how soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and uptake will respond to ongoing climate change. In particular, the soil-to-atmosphere CO(2)flux, commonly though imprecisely termed soil respiration (R-S), is one of the largest carbon fluxes in the Earth system. An increasing number of high-frequencyR(S)measurements (typically, from an automated system with hourly sampling) have been made over the last two decades; an increasing number of methane measurements are being made with such systems as well. Such high frequency data are an invaluable resource for understanding GHG fluxes, but lack a central database or repository. Here we describe the lightweight, open-source COSORE (COntinuous SOil REspiration) database and software, that focuses on automated, continuous and long-term GHG flux datasets, and is intended to serve as a community resource for earth sciences, climate change syntheses and model evaluation. Contributed datasets are mapped to a single, consistent standard, with metadata on contributors, geographic location, measurement conditions and ancillary data. The design emphasizes the importance of reproducibility, scientific transparency and open access to data. While being oriented towards continuously measuredR(S), the database design accommodates other soil-atmosphere measurements (e.g. ecosystem respiration, chamber-measured net ecosystem exchange, methane fluxes) as well as experimental treatments (heterotrophic only, etc.). We give brief examples of the types of analyses possible using this new community resource and describe its accompanying R software package.

Los bosques amazónicos tienen un papel fundamental en la regulación de las lluvias en gran parte del continente, por lo que la deforestación progresiva, asociada a las predicciones de savanización de la Amazonía bajo escenarios de cambio climático, tiene el potencial de causar reducciones de la precipitación en regiones agrícolas extensas del sur de Amazonía y el noroeste de Argentina. El último informe del IPCC predice para Europa un calentamiento de entre 0,3 y 4,8ºC para el siglo XXI, dependiendo del escenario de emisiones. Desde el 2003 Europa ha sufrido varias olas de calor extremas en verano, las cuales se predice que ocurran con una frecuencia de hasta dos años en la segunda mitad del siglo XXI bajo un escenario de altas emisiones. Los impactos de las olas de calor serán particularmente fuertes en los países del sur de Europa, incluyendo la Península Ibérica. Los cambios proyectados para el periodo 2081-2100 indican además una disminución de la precipitación de hasta el 30% en la Península Ibérica y resto de la cuenca Mediterránea, particularmente durante el verano. Dicho patrón es totalmente contrario al proyectado para los países del norte de Europa, donde se espera un incremento de la precipitación. También se espera un incremento de los episodios de tormenta en la mayor parte del continente europeo.

La información sobre los distintos componentes de la dieta de aves resulta relevante para entender las variaciones poblacionales y la subsistencia de comunidades ante la modificación del paisaje. Sin embargo, a la fecha, falta infor‐ mación cuantitativa sobre la composición de la dieta a nivel comunitario en el Neotrópico. A pesar de que el consumo de frutas y semillas por aves ha sido bien documentado para los ecosistemas templados del sur, el consumo de artrópodos ha recibido menos atención a pesar de su relevancia en la dieta de las aves. En este trabajo describimos y evaluamos la diversidad de artrópodos en la dieta de miembros de distintos gremios tróficos de la comunidad de aves de los bosques templados del sur de Sudamérica en el norte de la Isla de Chiloé, Chile (42°S). Para cada especie de ave capturada, estimamos la composición y la diversidad trófica de artrópodos en la dieta en base al análisis de heces. Registramos el consumo de artrópodos en 17 de las 18 especies capturadas, sugiriendo que el consumo de artrópodos está ampliamente distribuido en la comunidad de aves analizada. La Golondrina chilena (Tachycineta leu‐ copyga), especie insectívora, tuvo el mayor número de artrópodos promedio por muestra y, a la vez, la menor diversi‐ dad de órdenes de artrópodos en su dieta. Por el contrario, el Chercán (Troglodytes aedon), especie insectívora, registró la mayor diversidad de artrópodos consumidos. Entre las especies omnívoras, tanto el Tordo (Curaeus curaeus) como el Fio‐fio (Elaenia albiceps), consumieron principalmente coleópteros. Finalmente, los órdenes de artrópodos registrados variaron entre aves pertenecientes al mismo gremio así como también entre distintos gremios tróficos. Knowledge of bird diets is important to understand population fluctuations and the persistence of bird communities in changing landscapes. However, there is a general lack of quantitative information about the composition of bird diets at the community level in the Neotropics. Although consumption of fruits and seeds by birds has beenwell documented for forest ecosystems in southern South America, consumption of arthropods has received less attention, despite their relevance in bird diets. Here we describe and evaluate the presence and diversity of arthropods consumed by members of different dietary guilds of the avian community from temperate forests and rural landscapes in northern Chiloé Island, Chile (42°S). We estimated the proportion of arthropods consumed by all bird species captured using mist nests in a mixed rural landscape, and identified arthropods at the order level, based on remainscontained in bird droppings. In addition, we estimated trophic diversity for those bird species with the highest number of samples. Arthropod remains were prevalent in dropping contents for nearly all sampled species (17 out of 18 captured species), indicating that arthropod consumption is broadly distributed in the avian assemblage. The insectivorous Chilean swallow (Tachycineta leucopyga) had the highest average number of arthropods per sample but the lowest arthropod diversity. On the contrary, the highest arthropod diversity in droppings corresponded to the insectivorousHouse Wren (Troglodytes aedon). The omnivorous species, Austral Blackbird (Curaeus curaeus) and Whitecrested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps) consumed mainly Coleoptera. The quantity component of the disperser effectiveness of resident birds during the autumn-winter period has not yet been detailed in temperate rainforests of South America. In this study, the potentially frugivorous bird species in the temperate rainforests of southern Chile during the Austral autumn-winter were identified, and the quantity component of the disperser effectiveness of the birds (number of visits and number of seeds dispersed per hour) were evaluated for the tree species Luma apiculata and Aextoxicon punctatum. During the peak fruiting period of the both L. apiculata and A. punctatum 10 and 14, respectively, individuals of each species were monitored for a total of 10 days. Results show that four bird species consumed L. apiculata fruits. The birds Turdus falcklandii were the main fruit consumers (72 % of the visits), with a mean rate of 2.2 visits per hour and 49.2 seeds dispersed per hour. The frugivorous species visiting A. punctatum were T. falcklandii (97 % of the visits) and Columba araucana (3 %). In A. punctatum, T. falcklandii consumed 65 fruits in 35 visits, with a mean rate of 1.8 visits per hour and 3.4 seeds dispersed per hour. In conclusion, T. falcklandii would be the most effective seed disperser bird for autumn-winter fruiting trees in the Chiloé rainforest of our study site, at least with regard to the quantitative component of disperser effectiveness., El componente cuantitativo de la efectividad de la dispersión de semillas en aves residentes en los bosques lluviosos de Sudamérica durante el período de otoño e invierno no ha sido descrito con detalle. En este estudio se identificaron las potenciales especies de aves frugívoras de los bosques templados del sur de Chile durante el otoño austral y se evaluó el componente cuantitativo de la efectividad de las aves como dispersantes de semillas (número de visitas y número de semillas dispersadas por hora) en las especies arbóreas Luma apiculata y Aextoxicon punctatum. Durante el periodo de máxima fructificación de los árboles L. apiculata y A. punctatum fueron monitoreados 10 y 14 individuos, respectivamente, por un período de 10 días. Los resultados mostraron que cuatro especies de aves consumieron los frutos de L. apiculata. El ave Turdus falcklandii fue el principal consumidor de frutos (72 % de las visitas), con una tasa de 2,2 visitas por hora y 49,2 semillas dispersadas por hora. Los frugívoros que visitaron A. punctatum fueron T. falcklandii (97 % de las visitas) y Columba araucana (3 %). Humans are causing profound and rapid transformations of Earth's ecosystems to the extent that we are threatening the sustainability of the biosphere. The development of long-term socio-ecological research, integrating monitoring and experiments at the ecosystem scale, will be essential to detect, prevent, and mitigate the degradation of ecosystems at regional and global scales. To strengthen and expand the nascent Long-Term Socio-ecological Research (LTSER) Network of Chile, we need to integrate efforts of academic, private, and government institutions. A strong long-term research and monitoring program will require a conceptual framework and a set of relevant, comparative, and trans-disciplinary questions. Here, we identify these relevant questions and propose a conceptual framework for the Chilean LTSER Network. Further, we provide guidelines for its organization and consider the needs for infrastructure and funding to sustain the operation of a national network of ecological observatories., El ser humano ha desencadenado profundas y rápidas transformaciones de los ecosistemas afectando su capacidad de mantener los procesos y funciones que sustentan la biosfera. El desarrollo de investigación socio-ecológica de largo plazo, incluyendo monitoreo y experimentación, es esencial para detectar, prevenir y mitigar la degradación de los ecosistemas a escala local, regional y global. El fortalecimiento y expansión de una Red de sitios de Estudios Socio-Ecológicos de Largo Plazo (LTSER) en Chile requiere integrar los esfuerzos de una diversidad de instituciones académicas, públicas y privadas. La investigación socio-ecológica en esta red de sitios requiere además un marco conceptual de preguntas relevantes y comparativas que sean abordadas desde diversas disciplinas. En este trabajo se identificaron las preguntas relevantes para el desarrollo de la Red LTSER en Chile, se presenta un marco conceptual, una propuesta de organización, y se discuten las necesidades de infraestructura y financiamiento para la operación de esta red nacional de observatorios naturales.

An important issue in ecological restoration of forest ecosystems is to establish where reforestation is more limited by ecological factors and thus where additional treatments (e.g. irrigation, shading) are more needed. Population growth, density and reproduction in plants have frequently been documented to decrease with altitude, although in semiarid regions, initial increases up to middle elevations and then decreasing upward have been reported. In the semiarid region of central Chile, the Andean sclerophyllous forest is distributed between 400 and 1,600 m a.s.l. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that reforestation in this ecosystem should be more successful at middle elevations of its altitudinal range. We planted twenty seedlings of three shade-intolerant tree species (Lithraea caustica, Quillaja saponaria and Schinuspolygamus) in five sites along an elevation gradient (480 to 1,500 m a.s.l.). We repeated the experiment during two consecutive years (2007 and 2008) that had different climatic conditions. Seedling survival for all species was superior at higher elevations in both experimental years, and final survival did not differ between years at any elevation level in the three species. In contrast to our initial prediction, these results suggest that reforestation of the Andean sclerophyllous forest is more successful at higher altitudes, and that at lower altitudes, additional treatments (irrigation, shading, etc.) would be needed to restore these forests. Un problema en restauración ecológica de ecosistemas forestales es establecer dónde la reforestación es más limitada por factores ecológicos, y así dónde son más necesarios tratamientos adicionales (riego, sombramiento, etc.) dentro del área de distribución del ecosistema. La densidad, crecimiento poblacional y reproducción en plantas frecuentemente decrece con la altitud, aunque en regiones semiáridas se observan incrementos iniciales hasta niveles altitudinales intermedios, y luego decrecimientos hacia niveles superiores. Así, en regiones semiáridas la reforestación puede ser más exitosa en niveles altitudinales intermedios de los ecosistemas. En este trabajo se evaluó la hipótesis que en el bosque esclerófilo andino (400 a 1.600 m s.n.m., región semiárida de Chile), la reforestación es más exitosa en niveles intermedios de su rango altitudinal. Para esto, fueron plantadas 20 plantas de tres especies arbóreas intolerantes que se encuentran en la mayor parte del rango altitudinal del ecosistema (Lithrea caustica, Quillaja saponaria y Schinus polygamus), en cinco sitios a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal en Chile central (480 - 1.500 m s.n.m.). Este ensayo fue repetido en dos años consecutivos de diferentes condiciones climáticas (2007 y 2008). La sobrevivencia de plantas de las especies fue superior en altitudes mayores en ambos años, y la sobrevivencia no difirió entre años en ningún nivel altitudinal en cada especie. A diferencia de la hipótesis inicial, estos resultados sugieren que la reforestación del bosque esclerófilo andino puede ser más exitosa en altitudes mayores de su rango altitudinal, y que en menores altitudes probablemente se requieren tratamientos adicionales (riego o sombra) para reforestación y restauración.
