The spatial patterns of distribution of five species of the Gerreidae (Diapterus rhombeus, Eucinostomus argenteus, Eucinostomus gula, Eucinostomus melanopterus and Eugerres brasilianus) in Mambucaba estuary, south-eastern Brazil, were determined to assess habitat partitioning of the estuarine reaches. Sampling was conducted between October 2007 and August 2008. Diapterus rhombeus and E. gula were exclusively found in the lower estuary, whereas E. melanopterus and E. brasilianus were exclusively found from the middle estuary. Eucinostomus argenteus was common in the two estuarine zones. Total length and total weight data showed that the smallest individuals of D. rhombeus and E. gula were found near to the estuarine mouth compared with deeper areas of high salinity and lesser influence of the estuarine plume. The smallest individuals of E. argenteus, E. brasilianus and E. melanopterus were found in a protected estuarine lagoon connected to the main estuarine channel, and the largest in the other sites in the main channel of the middle estuary. Spatial partition seems to be the strategy developed by the 5 members of the Gerreidae family to coexist in the Mambucaba estuary, which may be attributed to competition in the past between the species of Gerreidae or to differentiated tolerance to environmental constraints [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Diel fluctuations in nearshore fish communities were studied at a sandy beach in south-eastern Brazil. A total of 192 samples were performed by beach seines, during 3-hour intervals throughout 48-hour periods, between spring 2005 and winter 2006. Mean biomass and number of species were significantly higher at night, while number of individuals did not differ between day and night. Major disruptions in the fish community occurred during the winter when the assemblages underwent restructuring. Harengula clupeola, Sardinella janeiro, Anchoa lyoleps and Umbrina coroides were the predominant species at night, while Atherinella brasiliensis, Pomatomus saltatrix and Trachinotus carolinus peaked during the day, although significant diel changes in community structure were recorded only in the summer. Biological interactions, behavioural variations and local constraints might explain diel differences in the fish distribution. This study confirms that changes in diel activity in juvenile fish species can differ in similar areas, even for a given species, and the causes of these changes needs to be investigated. The structure of the demersal fish assemblage in Sepetiba Bay, southeast Brazil (22°54'-23°04'S, 43°34'44°10'W) was described and related to environmental variables. A 3-yr long trawl survey (from July 1993 to June 1996) was conducted using a stratified random sampling strategy at 158 stations. One hundred and seven species of fishes in 80 genera and 44 families were identified. Gerreidae and Ariidae made up 30.5% and 28.6%, and 19.8% and 28.1% of the total number and weight, respectively. Sciaenidae, Engraulididae, Sparidae, and Carangidae were other prominent families. Three assemblages existed in the bay: one inhabited shallow, less saline and less transparent water in the inner zone (depth < 5 m, transparency < 2 m, salinity < 30 psu, and slightly higher temperature); another in the outer zone with the opposite situation (depth > 10 m, transparency > 3 m, salinity > 30 psu, and slightly lower temperature); and a third assemblage in the middle zone likely to prefer average values or show no clear preferences. Most species decreased in abundance over the 3-yr period of study. No seasonal change was detected in the assemblage structure, but many species were rare, indicating high spatial and temporal patchiness. Canonical correlation analyses were used to describe and compare the fish assemblages in the three different habitats. The outer zone had the greatest number of species recorded, lowest abundance, highest diversity and evenness, and was comprised mainly by Cynossion leiarchus, Prionotus punctatus, Anchoa tricolor, Haemulon steindachneri, Diplectrum radiale, Etropus crossotus, and Sphoeroides greeleyi; the inner zone had the lowest number of species recorded but the greatest number of species per sample, highest abundance, lowest diversity and evenness, being comprised mainly by Diapterus rhombeus, Genidens genidens, Cathrops spixii, Chloroschombrus chrysurus, Sciadeichthyes luniscutis, Cetengraulis edentulus, and Archorsargus... Simple Summary: The whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri is an important fishery resource on the southwest Atlantic coast. Despite being heavily exploited, there are a few uncertainties regarding the population structure in the transition area between the tropical and warm temperate zones (South Brazilian Bight). In the State of Rio de Janeiro (the northern part of this area), local environmental conditions, such as an upwelling phenomena and large estuarine bays, together with contributions of continental drainage and anthropogenic activities, could determine different croaker populations. The aim of this study was to assess the fine-scale population structure of this species in three localities in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil) and to compare it with previous studies that used different approaches. Through the combined use of genetic markers (nuclear microsatellites) and otolith signatures (morphometry and chemistry), two genotypic (North + Center/South) and three phenotypic (North + Center + South) populations were found. These results could contribute to a better understanding of the M. furnieri population dynamics and allow a rational management of this important fishing resource. The inshore area of the Southwestern Atlantic between 22 °S and 29 °S (South Brazilian Bight) is a transitional climatic zone, where the tropical and warm temperate provinces mix. In its northern part, i.e., in the coastal waters of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, local oceanographic conditions, such as upwelling in the north, and great bays with different degrees of anthropogenic influences in the center and south can determine the population structure of several fish stocks. The Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is one the most heavily exploited fishing resources in this area, but there are still some doubts about its population structure. In this study, through combined analyses using nuclear genetic markers and morphological and geochemical signatures of otoliths, a divergence of individuals between two populations was identified using microsatellites, while a finer spatial structure with three populations (north, center and south, respectively) was found based on otolith shapes and elemental signatures.
