Silica fertilization and nano-MnO2 amendment are reported as useful approaches in lowering the accumulation of arsenic in rice grains, but the effects of silica fertilization or nano-MnO2 amendment on microbial community in the paddy soils containing high concentration of arsenic are still unknown. In order to elucidate this question, the structures and composition of microbial community in the paddy soils, in response to silica fertilization and nano-MnO2 amendment, were investigated using pyrosequencing technique. The results indicated that Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria were the main dominating phyla in these paddy soils. A decrease in the relative abundance of Chloroflexi and Cyanobacteria, but an increase in the relative abundance of Acidobacteria was observed after silica fertilization and nano-MnO2 amendment. The changes of Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria were strongly correlated with pH and the concentration of bioavailable arsenic in the paddy soils. The α-diversity of bacteria in the paddy soils increased in response to silica fertilization at low amendment level, but decreased under silica or nano-MnO2 amendment at high amendment level. Results of β-diversity analysis indicated that the microbial communities in the control treatment shared more similarity with that of those received low level of nano-MnO2 amendment, and the two silica fertilization treatments also shared more similarity with each other.

The extracellular secretions are believed to have a significant influence on microorganisms physicochemical properties related to growth, morphological preservation, and environment stress defense. In this study, the response and potential detoxification role of the extracellular secretions in the widely used white-rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium , was investigated. The results indicated that the EPS production was elevated and the activities of two main ligninolytic enzymes (LiP and MnP) were generally inhibited by cadmium. At the early exposure period (0–8 h), the extracellular protein was induced by 50 μM cadmium. However, an opposite result was observed with further increase in exposure time. The oxalate secretion under cadmium stress increased by 73.2%–218.4% compared to control. The addition of oxalic acid resulted in elevation in P. chrysosporium viability up to 190.6%, which confirms the detoxification of oxalate. The extracellular secretions such as EPS, extracellular protein and oxalate were elevated in some extent by cadmium, which was probably a stress response for P. chrysosporium to bind cadmium ion and cope the toxicity. Moreover, extracellular biosynthesis of cadmium crystal particles was observed, which is a directly evidence of P. chrysosporium extracellular secretions to reduce the mobility and bioavailability of cadmium ion.

Immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with TiO 2 nanoparticles (PTNs) are novel high-value bioremediation materials for adsorbing cadmium and for degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The real-time changes in H + and O 2 fluxes were measured using the noninvasive microtest technique (NMT). The H + influx increased after the addition of 2,4-DCP, and shifted to efflux following the addition of Cd 2+ . The O 2 flux decreased after the addition of both 2,4-DCP and Cd 2+ . A larger Cd 2+ flux was immediately observed after exposure to 0.5 mM Cd 2+ (−351.25 pmol cm −2 s −1 ) than to 0.1 mM Cd 2+ (−107.47 pmol cm −2 s −1 ). The removal of Cd 2+ by the PTNs increased more after treatment with the 0.5 mM exposure solution (27.6 mg g −1 ) than with the 0.1 mM exposure solution (3.49 mg g −1 ). The enzyme activities were analyzed to review the antioxidative defense system of PTNs in a solution containing various concentrations of Cd 2+ . The activities of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase as well as the enzyme catalase (CAT) plateaued at 6.5 U g −1 FW and 9.7 U g −1 FW, respectively, after exposure to 0.25 mM Cd 2+ . The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased gradually in solutions containing 0.1–0.6 mM Cd 2+ , and eventually reached a maximum (68.86 U g −1 FW). These results illustrate how the antioxidative defense system and the physiological fluxes of PTNs respond to the stress caused by toxic pollutants.

A novel biosorbent, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium, was applied to the bioremediation of composite-polluted wastewater, containing both cadmium and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The optimum removal efficiency achieved was 78% for Cd(II) and 95.4% for 2,4-DCP at initial concentrations of 20 mg/L Cd(II) and 40 mg/L 2,4-DCP. PPBs had significantly enhanced the resistance of P. chrysosporium to 2,4-DCP, leading to the degradation rates of 2,4-DCP beyond 90% with varying initial 2,4-DCP concentrations. This research demonstrated that 2,4-DCP and secreted proteins might be used as carbon and nitrogen sources by PVA-immobilized P. chrysosporium beads (PPBs) for Cd(II) removal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of PPBs were dominant in Cd(II) binding. The mechanism underlying the degradation of 2,4-DCP into fumaric acid and 1-hexanol was investigated. The adsorption–desorption studies indicated that PPBs kept up to 98.9% of desorption efficiency over three cycles.

Despite the knowledge about increasing discharge of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into wastewater and its potential toxicity to microorganisms, the interaction of AgNPs with heavy metals in the biological removal process remains poorly understood. This study focused on the effect of AgNPs (hydrodynamic diameter about 24.3 ± 0.37 nm) on the removal of cadmium (Cd(II)) by using a model white rot fungus species, Phanerochaete chrysosporium . Results showed that the biological removal capacity of Cd(II) increased with the concentration of AgNPs increasing from 0.1 mg/L to 1 mg/L. The maximum removal capacity (4.67 mg/g) was located at 1 mg/L AgNPs, and then decreased with further increasing AgNPs concentration, suggesting that an appropriate concentration of AgNPs has a stimulating effect on the removal of Cd(II) by P. chrysosporium instead of an inhibitory effect. Results of Ag + and total Ag concentrations in the solutions together with those of SEM and XRD demonstrated that added AgNPs had undergone oxidative dissolution and transported from the solution to the surface of fungal mycelia (up to 94%). FTIR spectra confirmed that amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and other reducing functional groups were involved in Cd(II) removal, AgNPs transportation, and the reduction of Ag + to AgNPs.

Application of algicidal bacteria is a promising way in the control of harmful algal blooms. However, many environmental factors can strongly influence the algicidal efficiency of algicidal bacteria against harmful algae. Till now, the relationship between algicidal efficiency and environmental factors is still elusive. In order to explore the key factors which play important role in determining the algicidal efficiency of an algicidal bacterium Bacillus sp. B50 against Microcystis aeruginosa, the susceptibilities of thirteen M. aeruginosa strains to algicidal bacterium Bacillus sp. B50 were tested. The results indicated that these thirteen M. aeruginosa strains could be classified into three groups: high susceptive strains, moderate susceptive strains and, resistant ones. The susceptibility of these Microcystis strains to Bacillus sp. B50 did not correspond with microcystins-producing characteristics or cellular phenotype of M. aeruginosa. However, the susceptibility has a linear relationship with growth rate of these M. aeruginosa strains. Bacterial community in the culture of the resistant strains could modify the susceptibility of susceptive one to the stress from algicidal bacterium, but this modification could be diminished by enhancing inoculation density of algicidal bacterium. Elucidating the influence mechanism of surrounding environmental conditions on the adsorption process is essential in application of adsorption method for heavy metal removal from wastewater. In the present work, the magnetic graphene oxide-supported β-cyclodextrin (MGO/β-CD) was synthesized and characterized by FESEM, TEM, TG–DSC, FT-IR, and zeta potential. The effects of pH, ionic strength, background electrolytes, and citric acid on the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) by MGO/β-CD were investigated. The results showed that Cu(II) adsorption was strongly dependent on solution pH and could be affected by ionic strength, background electrolytes and citric acid. The Cu(II) adsorption was increased as the NaNO 3 concentration increased from 0 to 0.1 M at pH 3 , NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , NaCl, and NaClO 4 enhanced the Cu(II) removal slightly. The Cu(II) adsorption was also improved by citric acid. Adsorption kinetics of Cu(II) was found to follow pseudo-second-order rate equation, and the adsorption rate was controlled by film diffusion. The adsorption data showed good correlation with the Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The results of this work are of great significance for the application of MGO/β-CD as a promising adsorbent material for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solution.

A comprehensive review of the development of H2S fluorescence-sensing strategies, including sensors based on chemical reactions and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of fluorescence-sensing strategies are compared with those of traditional methods. Fluorescence chemosensors, especially those used in FRET sensing, are highly promising because of their low cost, technical simplicity, and their use in real-time sulfide imaging in living cells. Potential applications based on sulfate reduction to H2S, the relationship between sulfate-reducing bacteria activity and H2S yield, and real-time detection of sulfate-reducing bacteria activity using fluorescence sensors are described. The current challenges, such as low sensitivity and poor stability, are discussed.

Due to the wide use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in various fields, it is crucial to explore the potential negative impacts on the aquatic environment of AgNPs entering into the environment in different ways. In this study, comparative experiments were conducted to investigate the toxicological impacts of polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) with two kinds of dosing regimens, continuous and one-time pulsed dosing, in different exposure media (deionized water and XiangJiang River water). There were a number of quite different experimental results (including 100% mortality of zebrafish, decline in the activity of enzymes, and lowest number and length of adventitious roots) in the one-time pulsed dosing regimen at high PVP-AgNP concentration exposure (HOE) compared to the three other treatments. Meanwhile, we determined that the concentration of leached silver ions from PVP-AgNPs was too low to play a role in zebrafish death. Those results showed that HOE led to a range of dramatic ecosystem impacts which were more destructive than those of other treatments. Moreover, compared with the continuous dosing regimen, despite the fact that higher toxicity was observed for HOE, there was little difference in the removal of total silver from the aquatic environment for the different dosing regimens. No obvious differences in ecological impacts were observed between different water columns under low concentration exposure. Overall, this work highlighted the fact that the toxicity of AgNPs was impacted by different dosing regimens in different exposure media, which may be helpful for assessments of ecological impacts on aquatic environments.

Due to the widespread application of white-rot fungi for the treatment of pollutants, it's crucial to exploit the special effects of pollutants on the microbes. Here, we studied the effects of cadmium on calcium homeostasis in the most studied white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The response of P. chrysosporium to cadmium stress is concentration-dependent. A high concentration of cadmium caused the release of calcium from P. chrysosporium, while a hormesis effect was observed at a lower cadmium concentration (10 μM), which resulted in a significant increase in calcium uptake and reversed the decrease in cell viability. Calcium (50 μM) promoted cell viability (127.2% of control), which reflects that calcium can protect P. chrysosporium from environmental stress. Real-time changes in the Ca2+ and Cd2+ fluxes of P. chrysosporium were quantified using the noninvasive microtest technique. Ca2+ influx decreased significantly under cadmium exposure, and the Ca2+ channel was involved in Ca2+ and Cd2+ influx. The cadmium and/or calcium uptake results coupled with the real-time Ca2+ and Cd2+ influxes microscale signatures can enhance our knowledge of the homeostasis of P. chrysosporium with respect to cadmium stress, which may provide useful information for improving the bioremediation process.

In this work, a field test was conducted to investigate the effects of heavy metal stabilizer addition on brown rice and microbial variables in a cadmium (Cd)-contaminated farmland from April to October in 2016. Compared with the control, red mud-based stabilizer (RMDL) effectively reduced the concentration of Cd in brown rice (with the removal rate of 48.14% in early rice, 20.24 and 47.62% in late rice). The results showed that adding 0.3 kg m−2 RDML in early rice soil or soil for both early and late rice increased the microbial biomass carbon (MBC), the number of culturable heterotrophic bacteria and fungi, and the catalase activity in soil at different stages of paddy rice growth. Furthermore, there was no notable difference in the diversity of the bacterial species, community composition, and relative abundance at phylum (or class) or operational taxonomic unit (OTU) levels between the control and treatment (RMDL addition) groups. In a word, RMDL could be highly recommended as an effective remediation stabilizer for Cd-contaminated farmland, since its continuous application in paddy soil cultivating two seasons rice soil could effectively decrease the Cd content in brown rice and had no negative impact on soil microorganisms.

Prevalence of heavy metals in the living environment causes chemical stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation in Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium). However, the mechanisms involved in ROS defense are still under investigation. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of lead- and cadmium-induced oxidative stress on the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), lignin peroxidase (LiP), and manganese peroxidase (MnP). A time-dependent change in all enzyme activities was observed following exposure to 50 μM cadmium and 25 μM lead. The lowest values were recorded at 4 h after exposure. Both cadmium and lead inhibited CAT and POD. The cytochrome P450 (CYP450) levels increased under 50-100 μM cadmium or lead exposure and decreased when heavy metal concentration was under 50 μM; this suggested that ROS is not the only factor that alters the CYP450 levels. The cadmium removal rate in the sample containing 900 μM taxifolin (inhibitor of CYP450) and 100 μM cadmium was reduced to 12.34 %, 9.73 % lower than that of 100 μM cadmium-induced sample, indicating CYP450 may play an indirect but key role in the process of clearance of heavy metals. The pH of the substrate solution decreased steadily during the incubation process.

A rapid and sensitive colorimetric sensing strategy employing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to detect trace Hg2+ in aqueous solutions is described. The citrate-capped AgNPs were functionalized to form a Tween 20-stabilized AgNPs (Tween 20-AgNPs) probe, which was stable in a high ionic strength environment. When Hg2+ was present in the aqueous solution, citrate reduced Hg2+ to Hg0 and formed a Ag/Hg amalgam with the AgNPs, followed by the removal of Tween 20 from the surface of the AgNPs. The AgNPs were unstable in high ionic strength solutions, resulting in AgNPs aggregation and co-stabilization with Hg2+, observed by a decrease in the UV-vis absorption. This decrease in the UV-vis absorption was proportional to the concentration of Hg2+. Under optimized conditions, the sensing system exhibited a linear range of 5.0 × 10−10 to 1.2 × 10−7 M for Hg2+, with a detection limit of 0.31 nM in buffer. The co-stabilization assays showed no Hg2+ was detected to be remaining in solution using our proposed method. The AgNPs removal percentage was correlated well with the concentration of Hg2+ with a correlation coefficient of 0.99862. When the concentration of Hg2+ was in excess, the AgNPs removal percentage correlated with the concentration of AgNPs with a correlation coefficient 0.994 as well. Moreover, this probe was successfully used to detect and co-stabilize Hg2+ in tap water, spring water, and surface water samples.

Traditional three-domain fungal and bacterial laccases have been extensively studied for their significance in various biotechnological applications. Growing molecular evidence points to a wide occurrence of more recently recognized two-domain laccase-like multicopper oxidase (LMCO) genes in Streptomyces spp. However, the current knowledge about their ecological role and distribution in natural or artificial ecosystems is insufficient. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity and composition of Streptomyces two-domain LMCO genes in agricultural waste composting, which will contribute to the understanding of the ecological function of Streptomyces two-domain LMCOs with potential extracellular activity and ligninolytic capacity. A new specific PCR primer pair was designed to target the two conserved copper binding regions of Streptomyces two-domain LMCO genes. The obtained sequences mainly clustered with Streptomyces coelicolor , Streptomyces violaceusniger , and Streptomyces griseus . Gene libraries retrieved from six composting samples revealed high diversity and a rapid succession of Streptomyces two-domain LMCO genes during composting. The obtained sequence types cluster in 8 distinct clades, most of which are homologous with Streptomyces two-domain LMCO genes, but the sequences of clades III and VIII do not match with any reference sequence of known streptomycetes. Both lignocellulose degradation rates and phenol oxidase activity at pH 8.0 in the composting process were found to be positively associated with the abundance of Streptomyces two-domain LMCO genes. These observations provide important clues that Streptomyces two-domain LMCOs are potentially involved in bacterial extracellular phenol oxidase activities and lignocellulose breakdown during agricultural waste composting.

Microorganisms are essential for maintaining ecosystem balance, and understanding their response to toxic pollutants is important in assessing the potential environmental impacts of such releases. In this study, the response to the heavy metal cadmium and the potential defense or adaptive mechanisms of the widely used white-rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, were investigated. The results indicated that cadmium causes plasma membrane damage, including rigidification of lipids, a decrease in H+-ATPase activity, and lipid peroxidation. The cellular death may be mediated by oxidative stress with mitochondria membrane potential (MMP) breakdown and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Parts of the cells were able to survive by activating antioxidant defense systems (antioxidant agents and enzymes). Extracellular synthesis of cadmium crystal particles was observed after exposure to dissolved cadmium ion, which is probably another detoxification mechanism in which the dissolved metal is precipitated, thus reducing its bioavailability and toxicity. These physiological responses of P. chrysosporium to cadmium together with the defense mechanisms can provide useful information for the development of fungal-based technologies to reduce the toxic effects of cadmium.

This research was conducted to search and identify spontaneously growing heavy metal-tolerant plant species that are potentially useful for phytoremediation in contaminated sediment. Five sites were selected for collection of plants growing on polluted shore (river bank) sediment of the Xiang River, China. The concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd in plants, sediments, and grasshoppers were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS700, Perkin-Elmer, USA). Considering translocation factor and bioaccumulation factor, Rumex crispus (Polygonaceae), Rumex dentatus (Polygonaceae), and Lagopsis supina (Labiatae) could be potentially useful for phytostabilization of metals. R. crispus can be considered potentially useful for phytoextraction of Cd. In light of the biomagnification factors, grasshoppers are deconcentrators for Pb and Cd, microconcentrators for Zn and macroconcentrators for Cu to the plants, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first report on Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd accumulation in R. crispus and L. supina, providing a pioneer contribution to the very small volume of data available on the potential use of native plant species from contaminated sediments in phytostabilization and phytoremediation technologies.

Microorganisms need to resist the hazards posed by heavy metals during the process of metal adsorption. Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a fungus that is efficiently used for heavy-metal biosorption in wastewater treatment. Extraction and analysis of proteins induced by heavy metals can help to understand the regulatory mechanisms of P. chrysosporium in wastewater treatment. In this study, P. chrysosporium was exposed to 50 μM cadmium nitrate. A maximum cadmium adsorption capability of 77.1 mg/g dry biomass was found after 65 h, which was accompanied by a relatively higher protein concentration. After separation of the culture fluid proteins by two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE), three differentially expressed proteins were detected from 17 spots. By using 2D-DIGE, followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS), glutathione S-transferase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase were identified. All three enzymes play important roles in the oxidative stress caused by cadmium.

To overcome the limitation of powder TiO 2 , the TiO 2 -impregnated glutaraldehyde-crosslinked alginate beads (TIGCAB) were prepared. The TIGCAB were characterized by DC, DBM, SEM, BET, XRD, Raman and TG. These synthesized beads were applied to reduce toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in acidic aqueous solution under UV irradiation. In the system without TIGCAB or UV light, no chromium reduction was observed. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) was about 8% when the system was exposed to UV irradiation with blank beads. Photoreduction rate of Cr(VI) decreased with increasing pH. The reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) decreased with the increase of initial Cr(VI) concentration in the range of 5–20 mg L −1 . Fe(III) ions improved the photoreduction of Cr(VI) because they can promote the trapping of electrons and holes. Moreover, TIGCAB can maintain full photoreduction activity for at least three cycles. The results show that TIGCAB are promising materials for the photoreduction of Cr(VI) from acidic aqueous solution in environmental pollution cleanup.

Graphene oxide has received world-wide attention due to its exceptional physicochemical properties. Herein, a sulfonated magnetic graphene oxide composite (SMGO) was synthesized from graphene oxide and was used as adsorbent for removing Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. The composite was characterized by TEM, EDS, particles size, BET, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and Raman. It can be separated and recovered easily using magnetic separation technology. The effects of operating parameters such as pH, Cu(II) concentration and temperature on the Cu(II) adsorption were investigated by using a response surface methodology (RSM). Optimum Cu(II) uptake of 62.73 mg g−1 was achieved at pH 4.68, Cu(II) concentrations 73.71 mg L−1, and temperature 50 °C. The adsorption process can be well described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The experimental data of isotherm followed the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters calculated from the temperature-dependent isotherms indicated that the adsorption reaction was an endothermic and spontaneous process. All results indicate that the SMGO is a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of copper ions from wastewater.

a b s t r a c t Laccases or laccase-like multicopper oxidases (LMCOs) could catalyze the oxidation of various substrates coupled to the reduction of oxygen to water. In this study, eight strains with laccase activity were isolated from composting samples in different phases, among which strain C1 isolated from the thermophilic- phase sample presented the highest laccase activity. The purified LMCO of strain C1 showed a single protein band on SDS-PAGE gel with a molecular mass of about 38 kDa. The novel laccase showed alkaline resistance and moderate thermostability. In this study, the dibutyl phthalate (DBP) binding properties of a DBP-tolerant bacterium (B. cepacia) were characterized in terms of adsorption kinetics and isotherm. Living and nonliving cells both exhibited rapid removal of DBP, achieving more than 80% of maximum sorption within 30 min of contact and reached the equilibrium after 3 h. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted with the Sips model and the nonliving cells have greater biosorption capacity and affinity for DBP than the living cells. Furthermore, the absence of an active mechanism dependent on metabolism implied that the DBP bioaccumulation by living cells was mainly attribute to passive surface binding. The optimum pH for DBP adsorption by living and nonliving cells were both observed to be 6.0. The biosorptive mechanism of DBP binding by B. cepacia was further confirmed by FTIR analysis and various chemical treatments. FTIR results indicated that the phosphate and CH2 groups on B. cepacia were the main bounding sites for DBP. Furthermore, 2.28, 2.15, 1.93 and 0.87 g of pretreated cells were obtained from 2.40 g of native cells via extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), superficial layer-capsule, lipids components and cell membrane removal treatments, respectively. Total binding amount of DBP on the native cells, EPS-removed cells, capsule-removed cells, lipids-extracted cells and membrane-removed cells were 26.69, 24.84, 24.93, 16.11 and 10.80 mg, respectively, suggesting that the cell wall lipids, proteins or peptidoglycan might play important roles in the sorption of DBP by B. cepacia. The information could be applied in understanding on the mobility, transport and ultimate fate of PAEs in soil and related environment.

The toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is widely exploited, but their hormesis effect has, so far, received little attention. This study reports the hormesis effect at low AgNPs concentrations of 0.34 mg L−1, with a 29.9% increase in bacterial viability compared with the control. Cysteine can induce a hormesis effect at a higher concentration. 12.5 mg L−1 cysteine induced a hormesis effect in the AgNP concentration range of 1.7–5.1 mg L−1. Results suggest that this cysteine-induced hormesis effect is concentration-dependent; the concentration that make sulfuration rate (ns/nAg) of 6.15 shows strong excitation to cells.

Remediating uranium contamination is of worldwide interest because of the increasing release of uranium from mining and processing, nuclear power leaks, depleted uranium components in weapons production and disposal, and phosphate fertilizer in agriculture activities. Iron-based technologies are attractive because they are highly efficient, inexpensive, and readily available. This paper provides an overview of the current literature that addresses the application of iron-based technologies in the remediation of sites with elevated uranium levels. The application of iron-based materials, the current remediation technologies and mechanisms, and the effectiveness and environmental safety considerations of these approaches were discussed. Because uranium can be reduced and reoxidized in the environment, the review also proposes strategies for long-term in situ remediation of uranium. Unfortunately, iron-based materials (nanoscale zerovalent iron and iron oxides) can be toxic to microorganisms. As such, further studies exploring the links among the fates, ecological impacts, and other environmentally relevant factors are needed to better understand the constraints on using iron-based technologies for remediation.

Despite the increasing knowledge on the discharge of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into the environment and their potential toxicity to microorganisms, the interaction of AgNPs with heavy metals remains poorly understood. This study focused on the effect of AgNPs on heavy metal concentration and form in sediment contaminated with heavy metals from the Xiangjiang River. The results showed that the concentration of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd decreased and then increased with a change in form. The changes in form and concentrations of heavy metals in pore water suggested that Cu and Zn were more likely to be affected compared to Pb and Cd. The concentrations of Hg in sediment pore water in three AgNPs-dosed containers, increased greatly until they reached their peaks at 4.468 ± 0.133, 4.589 ± 0.235, and 5.083 ± 0.084 μg L(-1) in Bare AgNPs, Citrate AgNPs and Tween 80 AgNPs, respectively. The measurements of Hg concentrations in the sediment pore water, combined with SEM and EDX analysis, demonstrated that added AgNPs stabilized in pore water and formed an amalgam with Hg(0), which can affect Hg transportation over long distance.

Due to the particular activation and inhibition behavior of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on microbes at various concentrations, it’s crucial to exploit the special concentration effect in environment. Here, we studied the viability variation of Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) under exposure to citrate-coated AgNPs (Citrate-AgNPs) in the presence of different sulfide sources (an inorganic sulfide, NaHS and an organic sulfide, thioacetamide (TAA)). The results indicated that both NaHS and TAA can promote activation of P. chrysosporium by Citrate-AgNPs at a higher concentration, which was initial at toxic level. Treatment with various concentrations of Citrate-AgNPs (0–9 mg/L) demonstrated a maximum activation concentration (MAC) at 3 mg/L. With the increase in sulfide concentration, MAC transferred to higher concentration significantly, indicating the obvious “toxicity to activation” transformation at a higher concentration. Ag+ testing exhibited that variations in sulfide-induced Ag+ concentration (3−7 μg/L Ag+) accounted for the “toxicity to activation” transformation. In addition, the similar results were observed on antibacterial application using Escherichia coli as the model species. Based on the research results, the application of this transformation in improving antibacterial activity was proposed. Therefore, the antibacterial activity of AgNPs can be controlled, even at concentration, via adjusting for the sulfide concentration.

a b s t r a c t In the present study, a novel type of adsorbent called thiourea-modified magnetic ion-imprinted chitosan/TiO2 (MICT) was prepared with the purpose of improving its feature as a composite adsor- bent. The simultaneous cadmium ion adsorption and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation by this novel composite adsorbent were investigated. The obtained results showed that the optimum pH values for adsorption of cadmium and degradation of 2,4-DCP were approximately 6.0-7.0. The kinetics study demonstrated that the adsorption process proceeded according to the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity for cadmium was 256.41 mg/g according to the Langmuir model. The inter- mediate products of the reaction consisted of 4-chlorophenol, 1,4-benzoquinone, phenol, cyclohexanol, and some other trace substances, as identified by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) tech- nique. The sequential degradation process was proposed, including reductive dechlorination or reaction with hydroxyl radicals based on the products identified. The used sorbent was reusable after regenerated through desorption, and the adsorption and degradation capacities were barely affected after five cycles.

Phanerochaete chrysosporium has been recognised as an effective bioremediation agent due to its unique degradation to xenobiotic and biosorption ability to heavy metals. However, few studies have focused on the simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants. The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of simultaneous cadmium removal and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation in P. chrysosporium liquid cultures. The removal efficiencies were pH dependent and the maximum removal efficiencies were observed at pH 6.5 under an initial cadmium concentration of 5 mg/L and an initial 2,4-DCP concentration of 20 mg/L. The removal efficiencies for cadmium and 2,4-DCP reached 63.62% and 83.90%, respectively, under the optimum conditions. The high production levels of lignin peroxidase (7.35 U/mL) and manganese peroxidase (8.30 U/mL) resulted in an increase in 2,4-DCP degradation. The protein content decreased with increasing cadmium concentration. The surface characteristics and functional groups of the biomass were studied by scanning electron microscopy and a Fourier-transformed infrared spectrometer. The results showed that the use of P. chrysosporium is promising for the simultaneous removal of cadmium and 2,4-DCP from liquid media.

The adsorption of chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solution by ethylenediamine-modified cross-linked magnetic chitosan resin (EMCMCR) was studied in a batch adsorption system. Chromium (VI) removal is pH dependent and the optimum adsorption was observed at pH 2.0. The adsorption rate was extremely fast and the equilibrium was established within 6-10min. The adsorption data could be well interpreted by the Langmuir and Temkin model. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained from the Langmuir model are 51.813mgg(-1), 48.780mgg(-1) and 45.872mgg(-1) at 293, 303 and 313K, respectively. The adsorption process could be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The intraparticle diffusion study revealed that film diffusion might be involved in the present case. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the feasibility, spontaneity and exothermic nature of adsorption. The sorbents were successfully regenerated using 0.1N NaOH solutions.

With the rapid development of AC/DC hybrid microgrids and the widespread use of distributed power resources, planning strategies for microgrids with high-density distributed power generation have become an urgent problem. Because current research on microgrid planning has not considered line factors, this paper analyses the planning of an AC/DC hybrid microgrid based on an AC microgrid. The capacity and siting of the distributed power resources are optimized, taking into account the influence of the line investment cost and the interactive power upper limit on the planning results. In the proposed model, the objective is aimed at minimizing the sum of investment cost, load-loss economic cost, and system losses, taking into consideration power balance constraints and feeder number constraints. The commercial solver CPLEX is applied to attain the optimal distributed power capacity and site. The theoretical results are verified by an actual system.

Graphene has been employed as an excellent support for metal nanomaterials because of its unique structural and physicochemical properties. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with exceptional properties have received considerable attention in various fields; however, particle aggregation limits its application. Therefore, the combination of AgNPs and graphene based nanocomposites (Ag-graphene based nanocomposites) has been widely explored to improve their properties and applications. Excitingly, enhanced antimicrobial, catalytic, and surface enhanced Raman scattering properties are obtained after their combination. In order to have a comprehensive knowledge of these nanocomposites, this Review highlights the chemical and biological synthesis of Ag-graphene nanocomposites. In particular, their applications as antimicrobial agents, catalysts, and sensors in biomedicine, agricultural protection, and environmental remediation and detection are covered. Meanwhile, the factors that influence the synthesis and applications are also briefly discussed. Furthermore, several important issues on the challenges and new directions are also provided for further development of these nanocomposites.

Biofertilizers have been widely used in many countries for their benefit to soil biological and physicochemical properties. A new microbial biofertilizer containing Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Bacillus thuringiensis was prepared to decrease nicotine content in tobacco leaves by regulating soil nitrogen supply. Soil NO3--N, NH4+-N, nitrogen supply-related enzyme activities, and nitrogen accumulation in plant leaves throughout the growing period were investigated to explore the mechanism of nicotine reduction. The experimental results indicated that biofertilizer can reduce the nicotine content in tobacco leaves, with a maximum decrement of 16-18 % in mature upper leaves. In the meantime, the total nitrogen in mature lower and middle leaves increased with the application of biofertilizer, while an opposite result was observed in upper leaves. Protein concentration in leaves had similar fluctuation to that of total nitrogen in response to biofertilizer. NO3--N content and nitrate reductase activity in biofertilizer-amended soil increased by 92.3 and 42.2 %, respectively, compared to those in the control, whereas the NH4+-N and urease activity decreased by 37.8 and 29.3 %, respectively. Nitrogen uptake was improved in the early growing stage, but this phenomenon was not observed during the late growth period. Nicotine decrease is attributing to the adjustment of biofertilizer in soil nitrogen supply and its uptake in tobacco, which result in changes of nitrogen content as well as its distribution in tobacco leaves. The application of biofertilizer containing P. chrysosporium and B. thuringiensis can reduce the nicotine content and improve tobacco quality, which may provide some useful information for tobacco cultivation.

Oleamide, a fatty acid derivative, shows inhibitory effect against the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. The EC50 of oleamide on the growth of M. aeruginosa NIES-843 was 8.60 ± 1.20 mg/L. In order to elucidate the possible mechanism of toxicity of oleamide against M. aeruginosa, chlorophyll fluorescence transient, cellular ultrastructure, fatty acids composition and the transcription of the mcyB gene involved in microcystins synthesis were studied. The results of chlorophyll fluorescence transient showed that oleamide could destruct the electron accepting side of the photosystem II of M. aeruginosa NIES-843. Cellular ultrastructure examination indicated that the destruction of fatty acid constituents, the distortion of thylakoid membrane and the loss of integrity of cell membrane were associated with oleamide treatment and concentration. The damage of cellular membrane increased the release of microcystins from intact cells into the medium. Results presented in this study provide new information on the possible mechanisms involved and potential utilization of oleamide as an algicide in cyanobacterial bloom control.

Silica fertilization and nano-MnO2 amendment are reported as useful approaches in lowering the accumulation of arsenic in rice grains, but the effects of silica fertilization or nano-MnO2 amendment on microbial community in the paddy soils containing high concentration of arsenic are still unknown. In order to elucidate this question, the structures and composition of microbial community in the paddy soils, in response to silica fertilization and nano-MnO2 amendment, were investigated using pyrosequencing technique. The results indicated that Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria were the main dominating phyla in these paddy soils. A decrease in the relative abundance of Chloroflexi and Cyanobacteria, but an increase in the relative abundance of Acidobacteria was observed after silica fertilization and nano-MnO2 amendment. The changes of Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria were strongly correlated with pH and the concentration of bioavailable arsenic in the paddy soils. The α-diversity of bacteria in the paddy soils increased in response to silica fertilization at low amendment level, but decreased under silica or nano-MnO2 amendment at high amendment level. Results of β-diversity analysis indicated that the microbial communities in the control treatment shared more similarity with that of those received low level of nano-MnO2 amendment, and the two silica fertilization treatments also shared more similarity with each other.

Human activities continue to increase the amount of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in lakes, which may cause serious environmental and human health problems. Global landscape of total organic C (TOC), N and P in lake water is still poorly known. Using a global data set that covers ~8300 lakes from 68 countries/regions spanning six continents, we estimate that global mean concentrations and storage in lake water are 5.578 mg L−1 and 984.0 Tg for TOC, 0.526 mg L−1 and 92.8 Tg for TN and 0.014 mg L−1 and 2.5 Tg for TP. These lake elements are significantly interrelated and in uneven distribution, being associated with morphological characteristics and climate conditions. We proposed that global C, N and P cycles should be considered as a whole in biogeochemical studies and policy-making related to environmental protection.

This study investigated the performance of immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles in the treatment of raw landfill leachate with a very low biodegradability ratio (BOD5/COD) of 0.09. The effects of various operating parameters, such as initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, pH, temperature, and biosorbent dosage, were evaluated with respect to the removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). For the immobilized biosorbents, an optimum pH of 6.0 for TOC and 7.0 for NH3-N were found suitable for TOC and NH3-N removal at temperature of 37°C, respectively. The most superior removal efficiencies of TOC and NH3-N of landfill leachate were over 75% and 74% in 72 h at an initial COD concentration of 200 mg L(-1), respectively. In addition, heavy metals were partly removed by the immobilized biosorbents during the process of landfill leachate treatment. The species and mass percentage of organic compounds in landfill leachate after the treatment were found to have considerably declined according to the gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system. These results indicate that the immobilized P. chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles could be a convenient and efficient method for the treatment of landfill leachate.

The present work evaluated the effects of six inorganic electrolyte anions on Cu(II) removal using aminated Fe3O4/graphene oxide (AMGO) in single- and multi-ion systems. A 2(6-2) fractional factorial design (FFD) was employed for assessing the effects of multiple anions on the adsorption process. The results indicated that the Cu(II) adsorption was strongly dependent on pH and could be significantly affected by inorganic electrolyte anions due to the changes in Cu(II) speciation and surface charge of AMGO. In the single-ion systems, the presence of monovalent anions (Cl(-), ClO4(-), and NO3(-)) slightly increased the Cu(II) adsorption onto AMGO at low pH, while the Cu(II) adsorption was largely enhanced by the presence of SO4(2-), CO3(2-), and HPO4(2-). Based on the estimates of major effects and interactions from FFD, the factorial effects of the six selected species on Cu(II) adsorption in multi-ion system were in the following sequence: HPO4(2-)CO3(2-)Cl(-)SO4(2-)NO3(-)=ClO4(-), and the combined factors of AD (Cl(-)×SO4(2-)) and EF (Cl(-)×SO4(2-)) had significant effects on Cu(II) removal.

Cd(II) has posed severe health risks worldwide. To remove this contaminant from aqueous solution, the sulfanilic acid-grafted magnetic graphene oxide sheets (MGOs/SA) were prepared and characterized. The mutual effects of Cd(II) and aniline adsorption on MGOs/SA were studied. The effects of operating parameters such as pH, ionic strength, contact time and temperature on the Cd(II) enrichment, as well as the adsorption kinetics and isotherm were also investigated. The results demonstrated that MGOs/SA could effectively remove Cd(II) and aniline from the aqueous solution and the two adsorption processes were strongly dependent on solution pH. The Cd(II) adsorption was reduced by the presence of aniline at pH5.4 but was improved at pH5.4. The presence of Cd(II) diminished the adsorption capacity for aniline at pH7.8 but enhanced the aniline adsorption at pH7.8. The decontamination of Cd(II) by MGOs/SA was influenced by ionic strength. Besides, the adsorption process could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The intraparticle diffusion study revealed that the intraparticle diffusion was not the only rate-limiting step for the adsorption process. Moreover, the experimental data of isotherm followed the Freundlich isotherm model.

In this study, the H2S donor, sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) was used to pretreat Phanerochaete chrysosporium in order to improve its ability to degrade 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). When pretreated with 100 μM NaHS, P. chrysosporium was able to degrade 2,4-DCP completely in 24 h, whereas the degradation efficiency of the untreated control was only 57%. The 2,4-DCP-induced oxidative stress was alleviated by NaHS, and the percentage of surviving cells increased by 32%. H2S or HS−, rather than other compounds derived from NaHS, were responsible for promoting 2,4-DCP degradation by P. chrysosporium. The results of this study suggest that H2S treatment is a potential strategy to alleviate environmental stress and improve the efficiency of the biological removal of pollutants from wastewater.

This study details a novel method for the extracellular microbial synthesis of cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) by the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. P. chrysosporium was incubated in a solution containing cadmium nitrate tetrahydrate, which became yellow from 12h onwards, indicating the formation of CdS nanocrystals. The purified solution showed a maximum absorbance peak between 296 and 298 nm due to CdS particles in the quantum size regime. The fluorescence emission at 458 nm showed the blue fluorescence of the nanoparticles. X-ray analysis of the nanoparticles confirmed the production of CdS with a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure. The average grain size of the nanoparticles was approximately 2.56 nm, as determined from the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) measurement of the most intense peak using Scherer's equation. Transmission electron microscopic analysis showed the nanoparticles to be of a uniform size with good crystallinity. The changes to the functional groups on the biomass surface were investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the secretion of cysteine and proteins was found to play an important role in the formation and stabilization of CdS QDs. In conclusion, our study outlines a chemical process for the molecular synthesis of CdS nanoparticles.

Microorganisms need to resist the hazards posed by heavy metals during the process of metal adsorption. Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a fungus that is efficiently used for heavy-metal biosorption in wastewater treatment. Extraction and analysis of proteins induced by heavy metals can help to understand the regulatory mechanisms of P. chrysosporium in wastewater treatment. In this study, P. chrysosporium was exposed to 50 μM cadmium nitrate. A maximum cadmium adsorption capability of 77.1 mg/g dry biomass was found after 65 h, which was accompanied by a relatively higher protein concentration. After separation of the culture fluid proteins by two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE), three differentially expressed proteins were detected from 17 spots. By using 2D-DIGE, followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS), glutathione S-transferase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase were identified. All three enzymes play important roles in the oxidative stress caused by cadmium.

Phanerochaete chrysosporium has been identified as an effective bioremediation agent for its biosorption and degradation ability. However, the applications of P. chrysosporium are limited owing to its long degradation time and low resistance to pollutants. In this research, nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were loaded on P. chrysosporium to improve the remediation capacity for pollutants. The removal efficiencies were maintained at a high level: 84.2% for Cd(II) and 78.9% for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in the wide pH range of 4.0 to 7.0 in 60 h. The removal capacity of immobilized P. chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (PTNs) was strongly affected by the initial Cd(II) and 2,4-DCP concentrations. The hyphae of PTNs became tight, and a large amount of crystals adhered to them after the reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that carboxyl, amino, and hydroxyl groups on the surface of PTNs were responsible for the biosorption. In the degradation process, 2,4-DCP was broken down into o-chlorotoluene and 4-hexene-1-ol. These results showed that PTNs is promising for simultaneous removal of Cd(II) and 2,4-DCP from wastewater.

A novel coarsening route for extracellularly biosynthesized cadmium nanocrystals was investigated for the first time. In this process, the white rot fungus Coriolus versicolor was employed to take up cadmium ions and synthesize extracellular cadmium crystal particles. The coarsening of the particles was induced by thioacetamide under certain conditions. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the formed cadmium crystal particles were coarsened from about 100 nm to 2–3 μm. The corresponding energy-dispersive X-ray spectra confirmed the presence of proteins in the particles. The maximum removal efficiency of Cd(II) increased from 17% to 87%, and the corresponding sorption capacity of biomass increased from 4 to 24 mg g −1 with the completion of the coarsening process. The properties of the coarsened particles were also examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD analysis of fungal mycelial pellets embedded with the coarsened particles confirmed the formation of cubic crystalline cadmium sulfide particles. The TEM results suggest that the coarsened particles were composed of clusters of several smaller particles. The changes in the functional groups on the biomass surface were studied through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Based on the results above, a possible mechanism for the formation and coarsening of cadmium crystal particle is also discussed.
