Abstract

Ginseng, officially known as Panax ginsengMeyer, has been traditionally used as a medicinal herb, particularly in Asia. Ginseng is propagated from seeds; however, seed germination is challenging, especially in its natural environment on farms. The seeds typically exhibit morphophysiological dormancy and require release from both morphological and physiological dormancy before germination. Although some studies have proposed methods for increasing seed germination rates, the underlying mechanisms of its dormancy release process remain unclear. Here, we investigated metabolic alterations during dehiscence in P. ginsengto determine their potential roles in dormancy release.

Abstract

Topology of SiOx units and glassy network of magnesium silicate glass at different pressures are investigated by molecular dynamics simulation to clarify its microstructure under compression. Results show that SiOx-topology and glassy network structure are significantly dependent on pressure. At ambient pressure, the –Si–O– glassy network in Mg2SiO4 glass is split into subnets/clusters. Under compression, the small subnets tend to merge each other forming larger ones. The decrease of Si–O–Si bond angle under compression that accompanies a formation of edge- and face-sharing bonds between SiOx units results in the first peak splitting of Si–Si PRDF at high pressure. In particular, the investigation also reveals a tight correlation between PRDFs (Si–Si, Mg–Mg, Si–Mg, O–O) and BADs (Si–O–Si, Mg–O–Mg, Mg–O–Si, O–T–O (T = Si, Mg)), respectively. The spatial distribution of corner-, edge- and face-sharing bonds is not uniform but forming subnets/clusters. The clusters of face-sharing bonds form rigid particles embedding into mixture clusters of corner- and edge-sharing bonds. Size distribution of subnets/clusters (SiOx-cluster as well as clusters of corner-, edge- and face-sharing bonds) under compression also has been investigated to clarify the intermediate range order. The characteristic change of PRDFs under compression in the relationship with microstructural change and the mechanism of magnesium ions incorporation into –Si–O– network is also discussed in detail. Abstract

Job recommender systems are designed to suggest a ranked list of jobs that could be associated with employee's interest. Most of existing systems use only one approach to make recommendation for all employees, while a specific method normally is good enough for a group of employees. Therefore, this study proposes an adaptive solution to make job recommendation for different groups of user. The proposed methods are based on employee clustering. Firstly, we group employees into different clusters. Then, we select a suitable method for each user cluster based on empirical evaluation. The proposed methods include CB-Plus, CF-jFilter and HyR-jFilter have applied for different three clusters. Empirical results show that our proposed methods is outperformed than traditional methods.

Abstract

Traffic Level of Service (LOS) information is crucial for traffic management systems, especially in urban areas. One method to estimate traffic LoS is to use a central server system to process traffic images captured by road side cameras. However, this approach requires a high performance server system as well as high network throughput to transmit images from the cameras to the server, which results in very high system deployment cost. In this paper, we propose a cost effective distributed solution using smart cameras each of which is equipped with a low cost ARM microprocessor to estimate the LOS from the captured traffic images. The LOS of a road estimated by a corresponding camera will then be sent to a traffic information server. In this study, LOS is determined based on the average traffic flow speed and the road occupancy. The Lucas Kanade optical flow method is used to estimate the speed of the traffic flow. In order to have a real time processing on a low cost platform, the whole LOS estimation algorithm has been optimized. The experimental results show that our optimized implementation can process traffic images in real time on an ARM Cortex-A8 platform and is 4 times faster than an OpenCV based implementation on the same platform.

Abstract

In this research, we suggest and implement a virtual reality system which dynamically generates the 3D stereoscopic content based on the viewing direction of the user towards a 3D screen. We propose a new approach for computing projection parameters used in OpenGL. The well-known stereoscopic rendering technique, which is called off-axis, is replaced by proposed technique that involves the changes of camera position into the process of constructing two viewing frustums for typical 3D rendering. We also introduce an approach to estimate viewer's face position in the physical screen space using inverse intrinsic matrix of digital webcam known through calibration process. Then, we extract and assign the eyes positions to virtual stereo camera positions in rendering pipeline. With the system, the real 3D perspective is achieved by using only inexpensive devices, and rendered content remains as a real physical scene with immersive dimension.

Abstract

Background Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has developed as the dominant paradigm of assessment of evidence that is used in clinical practice. Since its development, EBM has been applied to integrate the best available research into diagnosis and treatment with the purpose of improving patient care. In the EBM era, a hierarchy of evidence has been proposed, including various types of research methods, such as meta-analysis (MA), systematic review (SRV), randomized controlled trial (RCT), case report (CR), practice guideline (PGL), and so on. Although there are numerous studies examining the impact and importance of specific cases of EBM in clinical practice, there is a lack of research quantitatively measuring publication trends in the growth and development of EBM. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis was constructed to determine the scientific productivity of EBM research over decades. Methods NCBI PubMed database was used to search, retrieve and classify publications according to research method and year of publication. Joinpoint regression analysis was undertaken to analyze trends in research productivity and the prevalence of individual research methods. Findings Analysis indicates that MA and SRV, which are classified as the highest ranking of evidence in the EBM, accounted for a relatively small but auspicious number of publications. For most research methods, the annual percent change (APC) indicates a consistent increase in publication frequency. MA, SRV and RCT show the highest rate of publication growth in the past twenty years. Only controlled clinical trials (CCT) shows a non-significant reduction in publications over the past ten years. Conclusions Higher quality research methods, such as MA, SRV and RCT, are showing continuous publication growth, which suggests an acknowledgement of the value of these methods. Abstract

This paper proposes an automatic method to generate an extractive summary of multiple Vietnamese documents which are related to a common topic by modeling text documents as weighted undirected graphs. It initially builds undirected graphs with vertices representing the sentences of documents and edges indicate the similarity between sentences. Then, by adopting PageRank algorithm, we can generate salient scores for sentences. Sentences are ranked according to their salient scores and selected based on Maximal marginal relevance to form the summaries. These summaries are combined and applied the same process one more time to form the final extractive summary of the document set. A series of experiments are performed on Vietnamese news articles. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique over reference systems.

136. Bismuth nanodendrites deposited on glassy carbon electrode as a sensitive electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of Cd2+and Pd2+ions

Abstract

In this study, bismuth nanodendrites (BiNDs) were fabricated on glassy carbon electrode by chronopotentiometric method. The hierarchical structure and high population matrix of BiNDs provides high surface active area to enhance the electrochemical signals of measured Cd2+and Pb2+ions. The developed bismuth nanodendritic structure was well‐observed and characterzied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical behaviours of developed BiNDs electrodes were studied by the cyclic voltammetric (CV) method. The fabrication conditions for BiNDs such as the applied current and deposition time were optimized as ‐10 mA and 90 s, respectively. Under this optimized condition, the highest peaks of Cd2+and Pb2+ions at concentration of 20 ppb were obtained. The Cd2+and Pb2+signals acquired by BiNDs are almost three times greater than that measured by the Bi film electrode.

Abstract

The metabolic landscape of Epstein–Barr-virus-associated gastric cancer (EBVaGC) remains to be elucidated. In this study, we used transcriptomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics to comprehensively investigate aberrant metabolism in EBVaGC. Specifically, we conducted gene expression analyses using microarray-based data from gastric adenocarcinoma epithelial cell lines and tissue samples from patients with clinically advanced gastric carcinoma. We also conducted complementary metabolomics and lipidomics using various mass spectrometry platforms. We found a significant downregulation of genes related to metabolic pathways, especially the metabolism of amino acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. The effect of dysregulated metabolic genes was confirmed in a survival analysis of 3951 gastric cancer patients. We found 57 upregulated metabolites and 31 metabolites that were downregulated in EBVaGC compared with EBV-negative gastric cancer. Sixty-nine lipids, mainly ether-linked phospholipids and triacylglycerols, were downregulated, whereas 45 lipids, mainly phospholipids, were upregulated. In total, 15 metabolisms related to polar metabolites and 15 lipid-associated pathways were involved in alteration of metabolites by EBV in gastric cancer. From the bark of Caryodaphnosis tonkinensis three new polar eupomatenoids were isolated, for which the structures 5-(erythro-1,2-dihydroxypropyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methylbenzo[b]furan, 5-(erythro-1,2-dihydroxypropyl)-3-methyl-2-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)benzo[b]furan and 5-(erythro-1,2-dihydroxypropyl)-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylbenzo[b]furan were determined by spectral methods.

Abstract

The advancement of bioinformatics and machine learning has facilitated the discovery and validation of omics-based biomarkers. This study employed a novel approach combining multi-platform transcriptomics and cutting-edge algorithms to introduce novel signatures for accurate diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Different random forests (RF)-based feature selection methods including the area under the curve (AUC)-RF, Boruta, and Vita were used and the diagnostic performance of the proposed biosignatures was benchmarked using RF, logistic regression, naïve Bayes, and k-nearest neighbors models. All models showed satisfactory performance in which RF appeared to be the best. For instance, regarding the RF model, the following were observed: mean accuracy 0.998 (standard deviation (SD) < 0.003), mean specificity 0.999 (SD < 0.003), and mean sensitivity 0.998 (SD < 0.004). Moreover, proposed biomarker signatures were highly associated with multifaceted hallmarks in cancer. Some biomarkers were found to be enriched in epithelial cell signaling in Helicobacter pylori infection and inflammatory processes. The overexpression of TGFBI and S100A2 was associated with poor disease-free survival while the down-regulation of NR5A2, SLC4A4, and CD177 was linked to worse overall survival of the patients. In conclusion, novel transcriptome signatures to improve the diagnostic accuracy in CRC are introduced for further validations in various clinical settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
