Abstract

Relativistic electrons are produced, with energies up to 10 MeV, by the interaction of high-intensity laser pulse with an underdense plasma. With the progress of short-pulse multi-terawatt laser, it has become possible to produce MeV electrons in a plasma. These electrons can be used to apply to medicine and technology. Abstract

The results of experimental measurement and analytical estimation of the coefficient of backward reflection from targets made of various materials upon their irradiation by a picosecond laser pulse having the intensity of (0.8–4) × 1018 W/cm2 are presented. It is shown that the induced surface instability leads to the formation of a profile backscattering the incident radiation. The coefficient of backward reflection achieves a few percent and has an intensity optimum depending on the target material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Spectra of intraband absorption of polarized mid-IR light were investigated in undoped, p-, and n-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) covered with an InGaAs layer. Optical matrix elements for intraband electron and hole transitions in QD5 have been calculated for different polarizations of light, and a good agreement with the experimental data is obtained. It is shown that the intraband absorption of light by electrons strongly exceeds the absorption by holes. Photoluminescence spectra and TEM images of structures with artificial molecules formed by pairs of QDs were studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

120. Hard X-ray generation and particle production <e1>via</e1> the relativistic-intensity laser pulse interaction with a solid target

Abstract

This paper considers various channels of electron–positron pair, neutron, and γ-quantum generation via the ultrashort high-power laser pulse interaction with targets made from different materials. The positron yields in materials with different Z are estimated for the positron production by high-speed electrons and γ-photons. It is shown that a picosecond 100-TW laser pulse gives rise to formation of about 1010 positrons, possible channels of the neutron production in light- and heavy-atom materials being studied as well. It is ascertained that the formation of up to 107 laser neutrons per shot is possible when the laser intensity is ~1021 W/cm2 on a heavy-atom target.

123. Stimulated Brillouin scattering of short intense laser pulses in a dense plasma

Abstract

It is shown that in stimulated Brillouin scattering of picosecond laser pulses the proportion of the energy scattered in a strongly inhomogeneous short dense-plasma layer reaches a fraction of a percent at intensities below 2 ×1015 W cm-2 in the absence of a prepulse or less than 2 × 1014 W cm-2 if a prepulse is present. This can be used to detect a prepulse and to obtain an experimental estimate of the contrast. In the case of longer (≈10 ps, ≈2 × 1015 W cm-2) pulses the proportion of the energy scattered by the stimulated Brillouin process may reach several percent in the absence of a prepulse.

Abstract

Some compounds, Sb2Se3, InSe and CuSbSe2have been studied which have relatively low electrical conductivities (< 100 mho/cm) in the liquid state. Experimental results above and below the melting point are reported and discussed for the electrical conductivity, Hall coefficient, thermopower, and the thermal conductivity. We also present the results of a study of the thermal motion of liquid and solid gallium by means of neutron scattering.

Abstract

A hydrometallurgical method is described for the processing of oxidised ores grading 1-2% Ni using ammonium chloride. Ore from the Kimpersai Ni-Co deposit in Aktyubinsk, Kazakhstan, containing 1.2% NiO and 0.1% CoO with 26% Fe2O3, 6% MgO, 5% Al2O3, 0.6% MnO and 0.4% Cr2O3 was chlorinated in the laboratory and the metals precipitated as hydroxides. 145. Emission of x rays from a plasma formed by a train of picosecond laser pulses

Abstract

Experimental and theoretical investigations were made of the characteristics of the interaction between solid targets and picosecond laser pulses with a complex profile. A prepulse preceding the main picosecond pulse increased the absorption of the s-polarised radiation and reduced the absorption of p-polarised radiation. Moreover, the prepulse made it possible to control the intensity of various components of the x-ray radiation emitted by the laser plasma. A satisfactory agreement between the experimental results and numerical calculations was obtained and a theoretical optimisation of the efficiency of x-ray generation was made.
