The use of shielding gases in laser beam welding is of particular interest for materials interacting with ambient oxygen, e.g., copper, titanium or high-alloy steels. These materials are often processed by remote laser beam welding where short welds (e.g., up to 40 mm seam length) are commonly used. Such setups prevent gas nozzles from being carried along on the optics due to the scanner application and a small area needs to be served locally with inert gas. The article provides systematic investigations into the interaction of laser beam processes and parameters of inert gas supply based on a modular flat jet nozzle. Based on the characterization of the developed nozzle by means of high-speed Schlieren imaging and constant temperature anemometry, investigations with heat conduction welding and deep penetration welding were performed. Bead-on-plate welds were carried out on stainless steel AISI 304 for this purpose using a disc laser and a remote welding system. Argon was used as shielding gas. The interaction between Reynolds number, geometrical parameters and welding/flow direction was considered. The findings were proved by transferring the results to a complex weld seam geometry (C-shape).

Abstract Background Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin (ASP) and a P2Y12 blocker is currently standard care after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent insertion, and aims to inhibit platelet function in order to prevent stent thrombosis. The P2Y12 blocker ticagrelor (TIC) has greater antiplatelet effect than the previously used members of this class, such as clopidogrel. In healthy volunteers, TIC is sufficient to cause strong platelet inhibition, with little additional effect from ASP. Omission of ASP may improve the safety of antiplatelet regimes by reducing bleeding. However, the effect of single antiplatelet treatment with TIC, compared to DAPT with TIC + ASP, has not been studied in detail in patients with coronary artery disease. Methods To compare TIC with TIC + ASP, we have initiated a single centre, open-label randomised controlled trial (TEMPLATE study) in adults receiving DAPT following PCI with a sample size of 110 patients. Patients are invited to join the study when, as part of standard care, they are due to switch from DAPT (ASP + any P2Y12 blocker) to single antiplatelet treatment with ASP alone after 6–12 months. Patients are randomised to receive either TIC or TIC + ASP for 4 weeks. All patients then revert to standard care with ASP alone. Blood samples and clinical data are collected at three study visits: at baseline during treatment with ASP + any P2Y12 blocker (visit 1); approximately 4 weeks after visit 1 during treatment with either TIC or TIC + ASP (visit 2); and approximately 8 weeks after visit 1 when treatment has reverted to ASP alone (visit 3). The primary outcome is the extent of platelet inhibition, measured by light transmission aggregation, flow cytometry, flow chamber and plasma biomarker tests. The primary analysis will compare the extent of platelet inhibition between the TIC and TIC + ASP groups at visit 2, adjusted for baseline platelet reactivity. Secondary analyses will compare the extent of platelet inhibition at visit 2 with that at visit 3. Discussion This is the first study to compare in detail the extent of platelet inhibition in patients who are receiving TIC compared with TIC + ASP. The study findings will complement larger-scale trials of the clinical efficacy and safety of TIC compared to TIC + ASP. Trial registration ISRCTN registry, identifier ISRCTN84335288 . Terrestrial Radar Interferometry (TRI) is a measurement technique capable of measuring displacements with high temporal resolution at high accuracy. Current implementations of TRI use large and/or movable antennas for generating two-dimensional displacement maps. Multiple Input Multiple Output Synthetic Aperture Radar (MIMO-SAR) systems are an emerging alternative. As they have no moving parts, they are more easily deployable and cost-effective. These features suggest the potential usage of MIMO-SAR interferometry for structural health monitoring (SHM) supplementing classical geodetic and mechanical measurement systems. The effects impacting the performance of MIMO-SAR systems are, however, not yet sufficiently well understood for practical applications. In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of a MIMO-SAR system originally devised for automotive sensing, and assess its capabilities for deformation monitoring. The acquisitions generated for these investigations feature a 180∘ Field-of-View (FOV), distances of up to 60 m and a temporal sampling rate of up to 400 Hz. Experiments include static and dynamic setups carried out in a lab-environment and under more challenging meteorological conditions featuring sunshine, fog, and cloud-cover. The experiments highlight the capabilities and limitations of the radar, while allowing quantification of the measurement uncertainties, whose sources and impacts we discuss. We demonstrate that, under sufficiently stable meteorological conditions with humidity variations smaller than 1%, displacements as low as 25 μm can be detected reliably. Detecting displacements occurring over longer time frames is limited by the uncertainty induced by changes in the refractive index.

Consonant clusters that rarely occur lexically (i.e. within morphemes) may function as complexity markers when they span a morpheme boundary, i.e. when they occur morphonotactically. In this study we observe patterns in the diachronic dynamics of Middle English which hint at mutually beneficial effects between morphonotactic and lexical clusters. We suggest that the patterns revealed can be explained by frequency-based analogy effects in language acquisition.

Machine learning is a powerful method when working with large data sets such as diachronic corpora. However, as opposed to standard techniques from inferential statistics like regression modeling, machine learning is less commonly used among phonological corpus linguists. This paper discusses three different machine learning techniques (K nearest neighbors classifiers; Naïve Bayes classifiers; artificial neural networks) and how they can be applied to diachronic corpus data to address specific phonological questions. To illustrate the methodology, I investigate Middle English schwa deletion and when and how it potentially triggered reduction of final /mb/ clusters in English.

Compression testing of continuous fiber reinforced materials is challenging, because a great number of competing failure modes and instabilities on different length scales have to be considered. In comparison to tensile testing, the results are more affected by the chosen test set-up. Effects introduced by the test set-up as well as the type of damage in continuous fiber reinforced materials are mainly investigated for quasi-static loading. This is not the case for cyclic compression loading. Neither standardized methods nor a great deal of literature for reference exists. The aim of this work is to increase the understanding by analyzing the potential effects the set-up in fatigue loading might have on the damage for two common testing strategies by fatigue tests, load increase creep tests and supplementary analytical models. The results show that damage modes can be altered by the testing strategy for the investigated woven glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6. The tools both experimentally and analytically provide the basis to choose the correct set-up in future investigations.

The NMR phenomenon of self-induced diastereomeric anisochronism (SIDA) was observed with an alcohol and an ester. The alcohol exhibited large concentration-dependent chemical shifts (δ’s), which initially led us to erroneously consider whether two enantiomers were in fact atropisomers. This highlights a potential complication for the analysis of chiral compounds due to SIDA, namely the misidentification of enantiomers. A heterochiral association preference for the alcohol in CDCl3 was determined by the intermolecular nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) and diffusion measurements, the same preference as found in the solid state. The ester revealed more subtle effects, but concentration-dependent δ’s, observation of intermolecular NOE’s, as well as distinct signals for the two enantiomers in a scalemic sample all indicated the formation of associates. Intermolecular NOE and diffusion measurements indicated that homochiral association is slightly preferred over heterochiral association in CDCl3, thus masking association for enantiopure and racemic samples of equal concentration. As observed with the alcohol, heterochiral association was preferred for the ester in the solid state. The potential problems that SIDA can cause are highlighted and constitute a warning: Due care should be taken with respect to conditions, particularly the concentration, when measuring NMR spectra of chiral compounds. Scalemic samples of both the alcohol and the ester were found to exhibit the self-disproportionation of enantiomers (SDE) phenomenon by preparative TLC, the first report of SDE by preparative TLC.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing and deep learning provide a practical approach to object detection. However, most of the current approaches for processing UAV remote-sensing data cannot carry out object detection in real time for emergencies, such as firefighting. This study proposes a new approach for integrating UAV remote sensing and deep learning for the real-time detection of ground objects. Excavators, which usually threaten pipeline safety, are selected as the target object. A widely used deep-learning algorithm, namely You Only Look Once V3, is first used to train the excavator detection model on a workstation and then deployed on an embedded board that is carried by a UAV. The recall rate of the trained excavator detection model is 99.4%, demonstrating that the trained model has a very high accuracy. Then, the UAV for an excavator detection system (UAV-ED) is further constructed for operational application. UAV-ED is composed of a UAV Control Module, a UAV Module, and a Warning Module. A UAV experiment with different scenarios was conducted to evaluate the performance of the UAV-ED. The whole process from the UAV observation of an excavator to the Warning Module (350 km away from the testing area) receiving the detection results only lasted about 1.15 s. Thus, the UAV-ED system has good performance and would benefit the management of pipeline safety.

BackgroundEarly withdrawal of recommended antiplatelet treatment with clopidogrel adversely affects prognosis following percutaneous coronary interventions. Optimal antiplatelet treatment is essential following ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) given the increased risk of thrombotic complications. This study assessed the frequency, predictors, and clinical impact of early prasugrel cessation in patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary interventions. Methods and ResultsWe pooled patients with STEMI discharged on prasugrel in 2 prospective registries (Bern PCI Registry [NCT02241291] and SPUM‐ACS (Inflammation and Acute Coronary Syndromes) [NCT01000701]) and 1 STEMI trial (COMFORTABLE‐AMI (Comparison of Biomatrix Versus Gazelle in ST‐Elevation Myocardial Infarction) [NCT00962416]). Prasugrel treatment status at 1 year was categorized as no cessation; crossover to another P2Y12‐inhibitor; physician‐recommended discontinuation; and disruption because of bleeding, side effects, or patient noncompliance. In time‐dependent analyses, we assessed the impact of prasugrel cessation on the primary end point, a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Of all 1830 included patients (17% women, mean age 59 years), 83% were treated with new‐generation drug‐eluting stents. At 1 year, any prasugrel cessation had occurred in 13.8% of patients including crossover (7.2%), discontinuation (3.7%), and disruption (2.9%). Independent predictors of any prasugrel cessation included female sex, age, and history of cerebrovascular event. The primary end point occurred in 5.2% of patients and was more frequent following disruption (hazard ratio 3.04, 95% confidence interval,1.34–6.91; P=0.008), without significant impact of crossover or discontinuation. Consistent findings were observed for all‐cause death, myocardial infarction, and stent thrombosis following prasugrel disruption. ConclusionsIn this contemporary study of patients with STEMI, early prasugrel cessation was not uncommon and primarily involved change to another P2Y12‐inhibitor. Disruption was the only type of early prasugrel cessation associated with statistically significant excess in ischemic risk within 1 year following primary percutaneous coronary interventions.

BACKGROUND:In patients with reperfused ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) both invasive and non-invasive assessments of microvascular dysfunction, the index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR), and microvascular obstruction (MVO) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), independently predict poor long-term outcomes. AIMS:The aims of this study were to investigate whether an invasive parameter (IMR), assessed at the time of primary percutaneous intervention (PPCI), could predict the extent of MVO in proportion to infarct size (MVO index). METHODS:50 patients presenting with STEMI and TIMI flow ≤ I in the infarct related artery were prospectively recruited to the study, before undergoing PPCI. All patients underwent invasive IMR assessment at maximal hyperaemia using adenosine, and following stent insertion. CMR was performed on day 2 following STEMI, MVO was assessed both on first-pass rest perfusion (early MVO) and in the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) images (late MVO) along with infarct size. The MVO index was calculated as the ratio of late MVO/infarct size. Differences between IMR quartiles and the MVO index were investigated. RESULTS:The median IMR was 38.5 (range 9 to 202). Staphylococcal food poisoning represents the most prevalent foodborne intoxication worldwide. It is caused by oral intake of enterotoxins preformed by Staphylococcus aureus in food. The relevance of newly described enterotoxins in outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning is controversially discussed. Although the staphylococcal enterotoxins SEG, SEI, SEM, SEN, and SEO elicit emesis in a monkey feeding assay, there has been no conclusive proof of their emetic activity in humans. In this study, we provide further evidence suggesting that one of these enterotoxins or a combination of SEG, SEI, SEM, SEN, and SEO cause staphylococcal food poisoning. We investigated two outbreaks registered with the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, in which only Staphylococcus aureus strains harboring the egc cluster, including seg, sei, sem, sen, and seo linked to typical signs of staphylococcal food poisoning were isolated. The outbreaks were caused by consumption of raw goat cheese and semi-hard goat cheese, and were linked to strains assigned to CC45 (agr type I) and CC9 (agr type II), respectively. These outbreaks provide further evidence that newly-described staphylococcal enterotoxins are likely to cause staphylococcal food poisoning in humans.

BackgroundRehospitalizations (RHs) after ST‐elevation myocardial infarction carry a high economic burden and may deteriorate quality of life. Characterizing patients at higher risk may allow the design of preventive measures. We studied the frequency, reasons, and predictors for unplanned cardiac and noncardiac RHs in ST‐elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods and ResultsIn this post‐hoc analysis of the COMFORTABLE AMI (Comparison of Biolimus Eluted From an Erodible Stent Coating With Bare Metal Stents in Acute ST‐Elevation Myocardial Infarction; NCT00962416) trial including 1137 patients, unplanned cardiac and noncardiac RHs occurred in 133 (11.7%) and in 79 patients (6.9%), respectively, at 1 year. The most frequent reasons for unplanned cardiac RHs were recurrent chest pain without evidence of ischemia (20.4%), recurrent chest pain with ischemia and coronary intervention (16.9%), and ischemic events (16.9%). Unplanned noncardiac RHs occurred most frequently attributed to bleeding (24.5%), infections (14.3%), and cancer (9.1%). On multivariate analysis, left ventricular ejection fraction (22% increase in the rate of RHs per 10% decrease; P=0.03) and angiographic myocardial infarction Syntax score (34% increase per 10‐point increase; P=0.01) were independent predictors of unplanned cardiac RHs. Age emerged as the only independent predictor of unplanned noncardiac RHs. Regional differences for unplanned cardiac RHs were observed. ConclusionsAmong ST‐elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention in the setting of a randomized, clinical trial, unplanned cardiac RHs occurred in 12% with recurrent chest pain being the foremost reason. Unplanned noncardiac RHs occurred in 7% with bleeding as the leading cause. Left ventricular ejection fraction and Syntax score were independent predictors of unplanned cardiac RHs and identified patient subgroups in need for improved secondary prevention. In recent years, many spore-forming commensal Clostridia found in the gut have been discovered to promote host physiology, immune development, and protection against infections. We provide a detailed protocol for rapid enrichment of spore-forming bacteria from murine intestine. Briefly, contents from the intestinal cecum are collected aerobically, diluted and finally treated with chloroform to enrich for Clostridia spores.

The Calibration Home Base (CHB) is an optical laboratory designed for the calibration of imaging spectrometers for the VNIR/SWIR wavelength range. Radiometric, spectral and geometric calibration as well as the characterization of sensor signal dependency on polarization are realized in a precise and highly automated fashion. This allows to carry out a wide range of time consuming measurements in an ecient way. The implementation of ISO 9001 standards in all procedures ensures a traceable quality of results. Spectral measurements in the wavelength range 380–1000 nm are performed to a wavelength uncertainty of +- 0.1 nm, while an uncertainty of +-0.2 nm is reached in the wavelength range 1000 – 2500 nm. Geometric measurements are performed at increments of 1.7 µrad across track and 7.6 µrad along track. Radiometric measurements reach an absolute uncertainty of +-3% (k=1). Sensor artifacts, such as caused by stray light will be characterizable and correctable in the near future. For now, the CHB is suitable for the characterization of pushbroom sensors, spectrometers and cameras. However, it is planned to extend the CHBs capabilities in the near future such that snapshot hyperspectral imagers can be characterized as well. The calibration services of the CHB are open to third party customers from research institutes as well as industry.

QUESTION UNDER STUDY: In July 2014, an outbreak of Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica serovar Bovismorbificans was detected in Switzerland. The goal of the outbreak investigation was to rapidly identify and eliminate the contamination source in order to prevent new cases. METHODS: A case-case study design was applied comprising reported cases of S. Bovismorbificans and cases of other serovars. A trawling questionnaire was administered by telephone interview. Data were collected for 34 cases (20 S. Bovismorbificans and 14 Salmonella spp.) pertaining to food consumption during the 72 hours prior to symptom onset. RESULTS: A statistically significant association between an S. Bovismorbificans infection and the consumption of ‘salads’ (odds ratio [OR] 14.3, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.47–138.27) as well as the consumption of ‘sprouts’ (OR 10.6, 95% CI 1.16–97.59) was found. Principal places of consumption of ‘salads’ and ‘sprouts’ in outbreak cases were restaurants in southern Germany (80.0%, 95% CI 56.3%–94.3%). Microbiological analysis in Germany identified S. Bovismorbificans on sprouts, and genotype analysis confirmed that Swiss and German cases shared the same outbreak strain. The contaminated products were removed from the market in Germany, preventing an on-going outbreak. CONCLUSION: The combination of the applied methods and the collaboration between the two countries proved to be crucial elements of this investigation. A series of sprouts-associated salmonellosis outbreaks underpin the importance of this vegetable as a potential food-borne pathogen carrier.

Rapid coronary recanalization following ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requires effective anti-platelet and anti-thrombotic therapies. This study tested the impact of door to end of procedure ('door-to-end') time and baseline platelet activity on platelet inhibition within 24hours post-STEMI.108 patients, treated with prasugrel and procedural bivalirudin, underwent Multiplate® platelet function testing at baseline, 0, 1, 2 and 24hours post-procedure. Major adverse cardiac events (MACE), bleeding and stent thrombosis (ST) were recorded. Baseline ADP activity was high (88.3U [71.8-109.0]), procedural time and consequently bivalirudin infusion duration were short (median door-to-end time 55minutes [40-70] and infusion duration 30minutes [20-42]). Baseline ADP was observed to influence all subsequent measurements of ADP activity, whereas door-to-end time only influenced ADP immediately post-procedure. High residual platelet reactivity (HRPR ADP>46.8U) was observed in 75% of patients immediately post-procedure and persisted in 24% of patients at 2hours. QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: To describe the current epidemiological situation of enteric salmonellosis in Switzerland and its development in the last two decades, particularly by determining the ratio between domestic and travel-associated cases. METHODS: Between 1 February 2011 and 31 January 2012, 14 medical laboratories continuously reported their isolations of enteric salmonellae to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). Data on the travel history of salmonellosis patients was actively acquired from their treating physicians. These data were compared with the results of a case-control study on sporadic salmonellosis that was performed in 1993. RESULTS: It could be shown that, concomitantly with the pronounced decline in incidence of reported laboratory notifications of enteric salmonellae since the early 1990s, the travel-associated portion of isolates belonging to the most frequently isolated serovar Enteritidis has increased significantly (more than doubled). The three serovars that followed S.Enteritidis in frequency of isolation (Typhimurium, Bardo, monophasic 4,12:i:-) are predominantly of domestic origin. CONCLUSIONS: The significant increase in the percentage of travel-related S. Enteritidis infection, demonstrated by the comparison between the data from 2012 and 1993, might be a consequence of the reduction in domestic infections during this period. The fact that infections due to this serovar are now significantly more often travel-related than domestic clearly illustrates the success of the preventive measures taken. These consist of legal measures that were necessary to reduce the transmission of the pathogen in raw eggs, and sanitation measures taken by the producers that aimed to contain the chicken meat reservoir.

The number and functional activity of circulating progenitor cells (CPCs) is altered in diabetic patients. Furthermore, reduced CPC count has been shown to independently predict cardiovascular events. Validation of CPCs as a biomarker for cardiovascular risk stratification requires rigorous methodology. Before a standard operation protocol (SOP) can be designed for such a trial, a variety of technical issues have to be addressed fundamentally, which include the appropriate type of red blood cell lysis buffer, FMO or isotype controls to identify rare cell populations from background noise, optimal antibody dilutions and conditions of sample storage. We herein propose improvements in critical steps of CPC isolation, antigenic characterization and determination of functional competence for final application in a prospective investigation of CPCs as a biomarker of outcome following acute myocardial infarction.In this validation study, we refined the standard operating procedure (SOP) for flow cytometry characterisation and functional analysis of CPCs from the first 18 patients of the Progenitor Cell Response after Myocardial Infarction Study (ProMIS). ProMIS aims to verify the prognostic value of CPCs in patients with either ST elevation or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction with or without diabetes mellitus, using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessment of ventricular function as a primary endpoint. Results indicate crucial steps for SOP implementation, namely timely cell isolation after sampling, use of appropriate lysis buffer to separate blood cell types and minimize the acquisition events during flow cytometry, adoption of proper fluorophore combination and antibody titration for multiple antigenic detection and introduction of counting beads for precise quantification of functional CPC activity in migration assay.With systematic specification of factors influencing the enumeration of CPC by flow cytometry, the abundance and migration capacity of CPCs can be correctly assessed. Adoption of validated SOP is essential for refined comparison of patients with different comorbidities in the analysis of risk stratification.

Die Österreichischen „Richtlinien für die sachgerechte Düngung“ für den Ackerbau und das Grünland erscheinen 2006 in einer neuen Überarbeitung Diese enthält einerseits Anleitungen für eine Beurteilung des Boden als Pflanzenstandort sowie seiner pflanzenverfügbaren Nährstoffgehalte. Auf diese soll eine Nährstoffzufuhr in pflanzen- und umweltgerechtgerechter Weise abgestimmt werden. Es werden zunächst die wichtigsten Inhalte und Änderungen der Richtlinien beschrieben. Anschließend werden die Bezüge zu „Cross Compliance“ und ihrer Umsetzung in nationale Gesetze erläutert.
