A large range of biodegradable polymers has been used to produce implantable medical devices. Apart from biological compatibility, these devices shall be also functional compatible and perform adequate mechanical temporary support during the healing process. However, the mechanical behavior of biodegradable materials during its degradation, which is an important aspect of the design of these biodegradable devices, is still an unexplored subject. Based on the literature, the mechanical behavior of biodegradable polymers is strain rate dependent and exhibits hysteresis upon cyclic loading. On the other hand, ductility, toughness and strength of the material decay during hydrolytic degradation. In this work, it is considered a three-dimensional time-dependent model adapted from the one developed by Bergström and Boyce to simulate the performance of biodegradable structures undergoing large deformations incorporating the hydrolysis degradation. Since this model assumes that the mechanical behavior is divided into a time independent network and a non-linear time-dependent network, it enables to simulate the monotonic tests of a biodegradable structure loaded under different strain rates. The hysteresis effects during unloading–reloading cycles at different strain levels can be predicted by the model. A parametric study of the material model parameters evolution during the hydrolytic degradation was conducted to identify which parameters are more sensible to this degradation process. The investigated model could predict very well the experimental results of a blend of polylactic acid and polycaprolactone (PLA–PCL) in the full range of strains until rupture during hydrolytic degradation. From these results and analyses, a method is proposed to simulate the three-dimensional mechanical behavior during hydrolytic degradation.

Several biodegradable polymers are used in many products with short life cycles. The performance of a product is mostly conditioned by the materials selection and dimensioning. Strength, maximum strain and toughness will decrease along its degradation, and it should be enough for the predicted use. Biodegradable plastics can present short-term performances similar to conventional plastics. However, the mechanical behavior of biodegradable materials, along the degradation time, is still an unexplored subject. The maximum strength failure criteria, as a function of degradation time, have traditionally been modeled according to first order kinetics. In this work, hyperelastic constitutive models are discussed. An example of these is shown for a blend composed of poly(L-lactide) acid (PLLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL). A numerical approach using ABAQUS is presented, which can be extended to other 3D geometries. Thus, the material properties of the model proposed are automatically updated in correspondence to the degradation time, by means of a user material subroutine. The parameterization was achieved by fitting the theoretical curves with the experimental data of tensile tests made on a PLLA-PCL blend (90:10) for different degradation times. The results obtained by numerical simulations are compared to experimental data, showing a good correlation between both results.

This report describes the development of a force platform based on instrumented load cells with built-in conditioning circuit and strain gages to measure and acquire the components of the force that is applied to the bike crank arm during pedaling in real conditions, and save them on a SD Card. To accomplish that, a complete new crank arm 3D solid model was developed in the SolidWorks, with dimensions equivalent to a commercial crank set and compatible with a conventional road bike, but with a compartment to support all the electronics necessary to measure 3 components of the force applied to the pedal during pedaling. After that, a 6082 T6 Aluminum Crankset based on the solid model was made and instrumented with three Wheatstone bridges each. The signals were conditioned on a printed circuit board, made on SMD technology, and acquired using a microcontroller with a DAC. Static deformation analysis showed a linearity error below 0.6% for all six channels. Dynamic analysis showed a natural frequency above 136Hz. A one-factor experiment design was performed with 5 amateur cyclists. ANOVA showed that the cyclist weight causes significant variation on the force applied to the bicycle pedal and its bilateral symmetry.

Bibliography. Bibliotheca Universalis (1545). Conrad Gesner (1516-1565). Pandectae (1548-1549). Printing Press - Abstract
Printing Press had, as one of their most significant impacts, the vast, intense and accelerated production of bibliographies, as means of recording, organizing, selecting, availability and mediation of documents. One of the many consequences of Printing Press is the need to operate the so-called information explosion - a phenomenon investigated from an historical and cultural point of view by authors such as Peter Burke and Ann Blair. Based on this frame, this article seeks to establish relations between the historical and informational context of Modern Europe and the Bibliotheca Universalis, written by Conrad Gesner (16th century). The Bibliotheca enrolls aspects of manuscript and printed culture and implicitly brings a deep descriptive and semantic reflection on documents and knowledge, as evidenced in studies of Alfredo Serrai and Fiammetta Sabba. The "bibliographic gesture" of Gesner is more than just a response to the confusa et noxia illa librorum multitudo ("confusing and annoying crowd of books"), which in our days brings us to the meaning of the so-called information overload: it is the force that builds the very architecture of Bibliography as a discipline

A large range of biodegradable polymers are used in many products with short life cycle. Important applications of these are found in the biomedical field, where biodegradable materials are used to produce scaffolds that temporarily replace the biomechanical functions of a biologic tissue, while it progressively regenerates its capacities. However, the mechanical behavior of biodegradable materials along its degradation time, which is an important aspect of the project, is still an unexplored subject. In this work, hyper elastic constitutive models, such as the Neo-Hookean, the Mooney-Rivlin modified and the second reduced order are discussed. These can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of a blend composed of polylatic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL). A numerical approach using ABAQUS® is presented, where the material properties of the model proposal are automatically updated in correspondence to the degradation time, by means of a User Material subroutine (UMAT). The parameterization of the material model proposal for different degradation times were achieved by fitting the theoretical curves with the experimental data of tensile tests. The material model proposal implemented in a subroutine could be used as a design toll for generic biodegradable devices.

P-cadherin is a cell-cell adhesion molecule, whose expression is highly associated with undifferentiated cells in normal adult epithelial tissues, as well as with poorly differentiated carcinomas. Its expression has been already reported in human embryonic stem cells and it is presumed to be a marker of stem or progenitor cells of some epithelial tissues. In normal breast, P-cadherin has an essential role during ductal mammary branching, being expressed by the monolayer of epithelial cap cells at the end buds. In mature mammary tissue, its expression is restricted to the myoepithelium; it has been postulated that it may also be present in early luminal progenitor cells. In breast cancer, P-cadherin is frequently overexpressed in high-grade tumours, being a well-established indicator of poor patient prognosis. It has been reported as an important inducer of cancer cell migration and invasion, with underlying molecular mechanisms involving the signalling mediated by its juxtamembrane domain, the secretion of matrix metalloproteases to the extracellular media, and the cleavage of a P-cadherin soluble form with pro-invasive activity. Intracellularly, this protein interferes with the endogenous cadherin/catenin complex, inducing p120-catenin delocalization to the cytoplasm, and the consequent activation of Rac1/Cdc42 and associated alterations in the actin cytoskeleton. Considering P-cadherin's role in cancer cell invasion and metastasis formation, a humanized monoclonal antibody was recently produced to antagonize P-cadherin-associated signalling pathways, which is currently under Phase I clinical trials. In this review, the most important findings about the role of P-cadherin in normal breast development and cancer will be illustrated and discussed, with emphasis on the most recent data.

Aliphatic polyesters, such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polydioxone (PDO) and others, have been commonly used in biodegradable products. Hydrolytic and/or enzymatic chain cleavage of these materials leads to α-hydroxyacids, which, in most cases, are ultimately assimilated in human body or in a composting environment. However, each of these has some shortcomings, in terms of mechanical properties and degradation time, which restrict its applications. The combination of these materials, by copolymerization or blending, enables a range of mechanical properties and degradation rates. These are extremely promising approaches which can improve or tune the original properties of the polymers. A composite solution of several materials with different degradation rates also enables tuning the rate of degradation of a device and the mechanical properties. After immersion of an aliphatic polyester device, diffusion occurs very rapidly compared to hydrolysis. Therefore, it is usually considered that hydrolysis of ester bonds starts homogeneously and has traditionally been modelled according to a first order kinetics. In this experimental study, fibres of PLA-PCL, PGA-PCL, PDO and PGA, with two different dimensions, were characterized in terms of their degradation rate under three different environments (water, NaCl and PBS) at constant temperature (37°C). Weights and mechanical properties were measured after six different degradation stages. Stages durations were different depending on materials, according to the predicted degradation times. As other thermoplastics, they are viscoelastic materials. In this experimental study mechanical properties of fibres were compared at different strain rates.

This bibliographic review is focused on ligament tissue rehabilitation, its anatomy-physiology, and, mainly, on the dimensioning considerations of a composite material solution. The suture strength is problematic during the tissue recovering, implying reduction of mobility for several months. However, early postoperative active mobilization may enable a faster and more effective recovering of tissue biomechanical functions. As the risk of tendon rupture becomes a significant concern, a repair technique must be used to withstand the tensile forces generated by active mobilization. However, to avoid stress shielding effect on ligament tissue, an augmentation device must be designed on stiffness basis, that preferably will decrease. Absorbable biocomposite reinforcements have been used to allow early postoperative active mobilization and avoid the shortcomings of current repair solutions. Tensile strength decrease of the repair, during the initial inflammatory phase, is expected, derived from oedema and tendon degradation. In the fibroblastic phase, stiffness and strength will increase, which will stabilize during the remodeling phase. The reinforcement should be able to carry the dynamic load due to locomotion with a mechanical behavior similar to the undamaged natural tissue, during all rehabilitation process. Moreover, the degradation rate must also be compatible with the ligament tissue recovering. The selection and combination of different biodegradable materials, in order to make the biocomposite reinforcement functionally compatible to the damaged sutured tissue, in terms of mechanical properties and degradation rate, is a major step on the design process. Modelling techniques allow pre-clinical evaluation of the reinforcement functional compatibility, and the optimization by comparison of different composite solutions in terms of biomechanical behavior.

AimIdentify factors associated with COVID-19 intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death among hospitalized cases in Portugal, and variations from the first to the second wave in Portugal, March–December 2020.IntroductionDeterminants of ICU admission and death for COVID-19 need further understanding and may change over time. We used hospital discharge data (ICD-10 diagnosis-related groups) to identify factors associated with COVID-19 outcomes in two epidemic periods with different hospital burdens to inform policy and practice.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study including all hospitalized cases of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in the Portuguese NHS hospitals, discharged from March to December 2020. We calculated sex, age, comorbidities, attack rates by period, and calculated adjusted relative risks (aRR) for the outcomes of admission to ICU and death, using Poisson regressions. We tested effect modification between two distinct pandemic periods (March–September/October–December) with lower and higher hospital burden, in other determinants.ResultsOf 18,105 COVID-19 hospitalized cases, 10.22% were admitted to the ICU and 20.28% died in hospital before discharge. Being aged 60–69 years (when compared with those aged 0–49) was the strongest independent risk factor for ICU admission (aRR 1.91, 95%CI 1.62–2.26). Unlike ICU admission, risk of death increased continuously with age and in the presence of specific comorbidities. Overall, the probability of ICU admission was reduced in the second period but the risk of death did not change. Risk factors for ICU admission and death differed by epidemic period. Testing interactions, in the period with high hospital burden, those aged 80–89, women, and those with specific comorbidities had a significantly lower aRR for ICU admission. Risk of death increased in the second period for those with dementia and diabetes.Discussion and conclusionsThe probability of ICU admission was reduced in the second period. Different patient profiles were identified for ICU and deaths among COVID-19-hospitalized patients in different pandemic periods with lower and higher hospital burden, possibly implying changes in clinical practice, priority setting, or clinical presentation that should be further investigated and discussed considering impacts of higher burden on services in health outcomes, to inform preparedness, healthcare workforce planning, and pandemic prevention measures.

Ubiquitous computing is strongly centered on the human, aiming to provide the right information through personalized interfaces and services in context of use to the applications users. We envision a ubiquitous computing based world in which a generic personalization model is applied to different applications, even if from different domains. The model is the core of a cloud-based platform, which guides developers by providing services to help them in the implementation of personalized solutions. Moreover, end-users will be less bothered when starting to use a new application, which already might know something about them in order to automatically adapt itself to the users' preferences and needs. A user's interactions with an application A might be useful to know how to personalize her experience when interacting with an application B. This paper presents the X-Users based solution in order to reach that vision, giving special attention to the personalization modeling. Important contributions of the paper are also two case studies that illustrate how X-Users can be used to help personalizing systems.

Abstract The Toca das Onças cave is one of the most important Quaternary mammal deposits of Brazil. Two different hypotheses have been proposed to explain the preservation mode of its skeletal remains: either the animals climbed down into the cave, or it could have functioned as a natural trap. Evaluation of pathological modifications on three articulated vertebrae of a single adult giant ground sloth Eremotherium laurillardi reveals a particular type of bone fracture caused by compressive force on the vertebral column, which split the vertebral bodies in the sagittal plane. This diagnosis suggests that the animal accidentally fell into the cave, in accordance with the second hypothesis proposed to the incorporation mode of skeletal remains into the cave.

IntroductionIn Portugal, COVID-19 laboratory notifications, clinical notifications (CNs), and epidemiological investigation questionnaires (EI) were electronically submitted by laboratories, clinicians, and public health professionals, respectively, to the Portuguese National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE), as mandated by law. We described CN and EI completeness in SINAVE to inform pandemic surveillance efforts.MethodsWe calculated the proportion of COVID-19 laboratory-notified cases without CN nor EI, and without EI by region and age group, in each month, from March 2020 to July 2021. We tested the correlation between those proportions and monthly case counts in two epidemic periods and used Poisson regression to identify factors associated with the outcomes.ResultsThe analysis included 909,720 laboratory-notified cases. After October 2020, an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases was associated with a decrease in the submissions of CN and EI. By July 2021, 68.57% of cases had no associated CN nor EI, and 96.26% had no EI. Until January 2021, there was a positive correlation between monthly case counts and the monthly proportion of cases without CN nor EI and without EI, but not afterward. Cases aged 75 years or older had a lower proportion without CN nor EI (aRR: 0.842 CI95% 0.839–0.845). When compared to the Norte region, cases from Alentejo, Algarve, and Madeira had a lower probability of having no EI (aRR;0.659 CI 95%0.654–0.664; aRR 0.705 CI 95% 0.7–0.711; and aRR 0.363 CI 95% 0.354–0.373, respectively).DiscussionAfter January 2021, CN and EI were submitted in a small proportion of laboratory-confirmed cases, varying by age and region. Facing the large number of COVID-19 cases, public health services may have adopted other registry strategies including new surveillance and management tools to respond to operational needs. This may have contributed to the abandonment of official CN and EI submission. Useful knowledge on the context of infection, symptom profile, and other knowledge gaps was no longer adequately supported by SINAVE. Regular evaluation of pandemic surveillance systems' completeness is necessary to inform surveillance improvements and procedures considering dynamic objectives, usefulness, acceptability, and simplicity.

In cassava, apomixis could fix hetereozygosity and prevent the transmission of systemic pathogens which complicate vegetative propagation of the crop. Evidence from maternal inheritance of RAPD markers and the structure of the embryonic sac in large progeny sets of two distinct genotypes have further confirmed that apomixis occurs in cassava. Here, we have built on an earlier report of apomixis in cassava in four ways (1) we estimated the rate of faculative apomixis in the range of 2% (2) we detected the occurrence of apomixis in a second genotype, derived form a different interspecific cross; (3) apomictic behavior was demonstrated in an F1 individual and (4) embryonic evidence showed that the mode of apomixis is aposporic. Since apomixis was detected in an F1 interspecific hybrid it is possible that genes for apomixis could be transferred directly to cultivated cassava from a wild relative. In cassava, apomixis fixes heterosis and avoids transmission of systemic pathogens which complicate vegetative propagation of the crop. A combination of evidence from maternal inheritance of RAPD markers and the structure of the embryonic sac in large progeny sets of two distinct genotypes have further confirmed the occurrence of apomixis in cassava. We could advance further on earlier reports of the detection of apomixis in four ways: (1) we could arrive at an estimate of the rate of facultative apomixis in the range of 2%; (2) we detected the occurrence of apomixis in a second genotype, derived from a different interspecific cross; (3) apomictic behavior was demonstrated in an F1 individual and (4) parallel embryonic evidence was generated that corroborate the potential occurrence of apomixis by apospory. The fact that apomixis was detected in an F1 interspecific hybrid hints to the possibility of directly transferring genes for apomixis from a wild relative to cultivated cassava.

One of the recurrent major environmental problems is the high energy consumption. It has been challenging to find methods of persuading people to have better habits on energy usage. We are proposing the use of personalization to enhance a mobile and pervasive-based gaming approach to better foster domestic energy awareness close to people. The game is based on real-time domestic energy consumption data and presents persuasive feedback information, beyond the competitive feeling of the game. The personalization mechanisms are provided by an external web service that is designed to serve different applications, even if from different systems or domains.

The concept behind a biodegradable ligament device is to temporarily replace the biomechanical functions of the ruptured ligament, while it progressively regenerates its capacities. However, there is a lack of methods to predict the mechanical behaviour evolution of the biodegradable devices during degradation, which is an important aspect of the project. In this work, a hyper elastic constitutive model will be used to predict the mechanical behaviour of a biodegradable rope made of aliphatic polyesters. A numerical approach using ABAQUS is presented, where the material parameters of the model proposal are automatically updated in correspondence to the degradation time, by means of a script in PYTHON. In this method we also use a User Material subroutine (UMAT) to apply a failure criterion base on the strength that decreases according to a first order differential equation. The parameterization of the material model proposal for different degradation times were achieved by fitting the theoretical curves with the experimental data of tensile tests on fibres. To model all the rope behaviour we had considered one step of homogenisation considering the fibres architectures in an elementary volume.

Throughout the twentieth century audio technology has contributed greatly to the development of ethnomusicology. Initially with the creation of the phonograph and techniques of sound recording, enabling the development of phonographic archives and later with creation of technologies that provide better sound quality, lower cost and more appropriate concepts to new paradigms of the discipline, even knowing that until the middle of the twentieth century ethnomusicology not had this name, scientific approach or methodological orientation. Despite the important contribution of audio technology for ethnomusicology, seem that phonographic processes can influence the results of acoustic musical traditions recorded. This study attempts to understand how different concepts and procedures of production music can influence the acoustic outcome of the sound recordings and, consequently, the musical-aesthetic structure of events transmitted by oral tradition in the state of Pernambuco. Thus, it is composed of bibliographic research on the main scientific productions of audio technology in ethnomusicology, field research with techniques of interviews, questionnaires and direct observation of contexts and important people in music production and oral tradition music in the State. Another important aspect for research was the experience gained over many years of work in ethnomusicology and audio technology, in addition to daily work in the Centro de Difusão e Realizações Musicais SESC - Casa Amarela (PE - Brasil) aimed mainly to Brazilian classical music and Brazilian oral tradition music. This study showed that the phonographic production process can influence the acoustic outcome of oral tradition music, providing differences between the sound of performance context and the sound recorded on media. Inappropriate concepts for the production of this type of music seems to contribute, indirectly, to the occurrence of changes in social structures of these events. Thus, the phonographic processes constitute an important topic of study for ethnomusicology calling attention to issues of changes in music after a production process beyond show gaps in the discipline about issues of power and relevance related to music production. Finally, it was possible to conclude that physical or conceptual factors in the production process of the oral tradition music influence it, sometimes in irreversible form in both artistic and cultural as socio-political and philosophical point of view.

Abstract Background The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been measured in different metrics, mostly by counting deaths and its impact on health services. Few studies have attempted to calculate years of life lost (YLL) to COVID-19 and compare it with YLL due to other causes in different countries. Methods We calculated YLL to COVID-19 from week10 to week52 in 2020 for eight European countries by methods defined by the WHO. We calculated excess YLL by subtracting the average YLL from 2017 to 2019 to the YLL in 2020. Our analysis compared YLL to COVID-19 and the excess YLL of non-COVID-19 causes across countries in Europe. Results Portugal registered 394,573 cases and 6619 deaths due to COVID-19, accounting for 25,395 YLL in just 10 months. COVID-19 was responsible for 6.7% of all deaths but accounted for only 4.2% of all YLL. We estimate that Portugal experienced an excess of 35,510 YLL (+ 6.2%), of which 72% would have been due to COVID-19 and 28% due to non-COVID-19 causes. Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands experienced excess YLL to non-COVID-19 causes. We also estimated that Portugal experienced an excess of 10,115 YLL due to cancer (3805), cardiovascular diseases (786) and diseases of the respiratory system (525). Conclusion COVID-19 has had a major impact on mortality rates in Portugal, as well as in other European countries. The relative impact of COVID-19 on the number of deaths has been greater than on the number of YLL, because COVID-19 deaths occur mostly in advanced ages.

Background: On March 16, 2020, the first death from COVID-19 was recorded in Portugal. Since then, there has been a reorganization of health services, changing the normal approach for the different cases of public health. Excess deaths recorded without a COVID-19 diagnosis are called excess mortality without COVID-19 (EM non-COVID-19). This study aims to estimate the EM non-COVID in the 7-month period after the first registered Covid-19 death. Methods: The following 2 methods were used to estimate the excess mortality in this period: the daily historical average of reported deaths and an adapted auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, considering the previous 5 years of records until October 16. For this model, after March 16, data was replaced with the daily historical average deaths from the previous 5 years, simulating the closest scenario possible as there was no pandemic. Only deaths from natural causes were selected for these estimations. For EM non-COVID-19 estimation, we subtracted the COVID-19 deaths from the overall excess mortality. Results: Between March 16, 2020, and October 16, 2020, there was an excess of 6,330 deaths from natural causes, i.e., nearly 12% more than expected. Both methods estimated an EM non-COVID-19 of around 66–67% in this period, with a greater relevance in mid-July and mid-September. Conclusions: Excess mortality was present almost every day during the study period. EM non-COVID-19 seemed to vary over time, showing some inadequacy of healthcare services in management of other patients free of COVID-19 in Portugal during periods with a greater patient volume. It is necessary to take care and monitor COVID-19 cases but also non-COVID-19 cases.

Apomixis maintains heterosis and avoids transmission of systemic pathogens which accompany vegetative propagation of cassava. An embryonic study of cleared ovules of two cassava clones in toto showed them to be of aposporic nature. Cytogenetic analysis of the two clones revealed an aneuploid structure (2n + 1) in apomictic individuals, whereas it was 2n in the sexually reproduced plants.

Objectives. This study is aimed at identifying the best clinical model to predict poststroke independence at 6 and 18 months, considering sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and then identifying differences between countries. Methods. Data was retrieved from the International Stroke Trial 3 study. Nine clinical variables (age, gender, severity, rt-PA, living alone, atrial fibrillation, history of transient ischemic attack/stroke, and abilities to lift arms and walk) were measured immediately after the stroke and considered to predict independence at 6 and 18 months poststroke. Independence was measured using the Oxford Handicap Scale. The adequacy, predictive capacity, and discriminative capacity of the models were checked. Countries were added to the final models. Results. At 6 months poststroke, 35.8% (n=1088) of participants were independent, and at 18 months, this proportion decreased to 29.9% (n=747). Both 6 and 18 months poststroke predictive models obtained fair discriminatory capacities. Gender, living alone, and rt-PA only reached predictive significance at 18 months. Poststroke patients from Poland and Sweden showed greater chances to achieve independence at 6 months compared to the UK. Poland also achieved greater chances at 18 months. Italy had worse chances than the UK at both follow-ups. Discussion. Six and eight variables predicted poststroke independence at 6 and 18 months, respectively. Some variables only reached significance at 18 months, suggesting a late influence in stroke patients’ rehabilitation. Differences found between countries in achieving independence may be related to healthcare system organization or cultural characteristics, a hypothesis that must be addressed in future studies. These results can allow the development of tailored interventions to improve the outcomes.

Considering the importance of the diseases affecting the productive performance of animals in the dairy industry worldwide, it is necessary to implement tools that help to control and limit the occurrence of such diseases. As the increased somatic cell counts (SCC) are a direct expression of the inflammatory process, they are candidates to become the usual parameter for assessing udder health regarding milk quality and for monitoring mastitis incidences. Toll-Like Receptors are membrane proteins that play a key role in immunity, recognizing pathogens and, subsequently, activating immune responses. The present study was conducted to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms in the TLR4 gene of buffaloes and to analyze its associations with somatic cell counts. DNA samples of 120 Murrah buffaloes were used. The whole coding region of the TLR4 gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction reactions and sequenced for polymorphism scanning. A total of 13 polymorphisms were identified for the sequenced regions of the TLR4, most of which are in the coding region. The association with the somatic cell score was highly significant (p < 0.001) for all identified polymorphisms of TLR4 gene (g.54621T>A, g.54429G>T, g.54407T>A, g.46616C>A, g.46613T>G, g.46612A>G, g.46611C>A, g.46609T>G, g.46541C>G, g.46526C>A, g.46516T>C, g.46376C>T, g.46372T>C). Therefore, it is suggested that the markers of the TLR4 gene can be used as molecular markers for mastitis resistance in buffaloes, due to their association with somatic cell counts.

Introduction: Portugal took early action to control the COVID-19 epidemic, initiating lockdown measures on March 16th when it recorded only 62 cases of COVID-19 per million inhabitants and reported no deaths. The Portuguese public complied quickly, reducing their overall mobility by 80%. The aim of this study was to estimate the initial impact of the lockdown in Portugal in terms of the reduction of the burden on the healthcare system. Material and Methods: We forecasted epidemic curves for: Cases, hospital inpatients (overall and in intensive care), and deaths without lockdown, assuming that the impact of containment measures would start 14 days after initial lockdown was implemented. We used exponential smoothing models for deaths, intensive care and hospitalizations and an ARIMA model for number of cases. Models were selected considering fitness to the observed data up to the 31st March 2020. We then compared observed (with intervention) and forecasted curves (without intervention). Results: Between April 1st and April 15th, there were 146 fewer deaths (-25%), 5568 fewer cases (-23%) and, as of April 15th, there were 519 fewer intensive care inpatients (-69%) than forecasted without the lockdown. On April 15th, the number of intensive care inpatients could have reached 748, three times higher than the observed value (229) if the intervention had been delayed. Discussion: If the lockdown had not been implemented in mid-March, Portugal intensive care capacity (528 beds) would have likely been breached during the first half of April. The lockdown seems to have been effective in reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, serious COVID-19 disease, and associated mortality, thus decreasing demand on health services. Conclusion: An early lockdown allowed time for the National Health Service to mobilize resources and acquire personal protective equipment, increase testing, contact tracing and hospital and intensive care capacity and to promote broad prevention and control measures. When lifting more stringent measures, strong surveillance and communication strategies that mobilize individual prevention efforts are necessary.

Background: One month after the first COVID-19 infection was recorded, Portugal counted 18,051 cases and 599 deaths from COVID-19. To understand the overall impact on mortality of the pandemic of COVID-19, we estimated the excess mortality registered in Portugal during the first month of the epidemic, from March 16 until April 14 using two different methods. Methods: We compared the observed and expected daily deaths (historical average number from daily death registrations in the past 10 years) and used 2 standard deviations confidence limit for all-cause mortality by age and specific mortality cause, considering the last 6 years. An adapted Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model was also tested to validate the estimated number of all-cause deaths during the study period. Results: Between March 16 and April 14, there was an excess of 1255 all-cause deaths, 14% more than expected. The number of daily deaths often surpassed the 2 standard deviations confidence limit. The excess mortality occurred mostly in people aged 75+. Forty-nine percent (49%) of the estimated excess deaths were registered as due to COVID-19, the other 51% registered as other natural causes. Conclusion: Even though Portugal took early containment measures against COVID-19, and the population complied massively with those measures, there was significant excess mortality during the first month of the pandemic, mostly among people aged 75+. Only half of the excess mortality was registered as directly due do COVID-19. •An Excess Mortality (EM) of 1255 deaths were estimated 1 month after the first death classified by COVID-19, and it would probably be more if the government had not taken early action. •The age group where a significant increase in mortality was noted was above 75 years. •51% of the EM was due to natural causes other than COVID-19.

Zebu cattle (Bos taurus indicus) are highly adapted to tropical regions. However, females reach puberty after taurine heifers, which affects the economic efficiency of beef cattle breeding in the tropical regions. The aims of this study were to establish associations between the haplotype alleles of the bovine genome and age at first calving (AFC) in the Nelore cattle, and to identify the genes and quantitative trait loci (QTL) related to this phenotype. A total of 2,273 Nelore cattle (995 males and 1,278 females) genotyped using the Illumina BovineHD BeadChip were used in the current study. The association analysis included females with valid first calving records as well as open heifers. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis among the markers was performed using blocks of 5, 10, and 15 markers, which were determined by sliding windows shifting one marker at a time. Then, the haplotype block size to be used in the association study was chosen based on the highest r2 average among the SNPs in the block. The five HapAlleles most strongly associated with the trait (top five) were considered as significant associations. The results of the analysis revealed four genomic regions related to AFC, which overlapped with 20 QTL of the reproductive traits reported previously. Furthermore, there were 19 genes related to reproduction in those regions. In conclusion, the use of haplotypes allowed the detection of chromosomal regions associated with AFC in Nelore cattle, and provided the basis for elucidating the mechanisms underlying this trait.

Educação ambiental. Ensino de Química. Consumo responsável. Ensino de Ciências. ,Science ,Social Sciences - Abstract
