ABSTRACT Background: Meta‐analyses (MAs) provide up‐to‐date, quantified evidence on treatment effects, which may be useful for clinical and policy decision‐making. However, the quality of MAs varies, and methodological flaws can limit their reliability. Aims: This review evaluated the methodological quality of MAs on sleep disorder treatments. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO for eligible MAs on randomized controlled trials of sleep disorder treatments published between 2018 and 2023. We extracted MAs' bibliographical characteristics with a predesigned form and appraised their methodological quality using AMSTAR (A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews) 2. We explored the associations between bibliographical characteristics and methodological quality ratings using Kruskal–Wallis tests and Spearman's rank correlation coefficients. Results/Outcomes: Among the 104 MAs, the majority (n = 82; 78.9%) had critically low quality, 19 (18.3%) had low quality, and only 3 (2.9%) had high quality. Regarding AMSTAR 2 critical domains, 97 (93.3%) MAs did not provide a list of excluded studies and justify the exclusions, 75 (72.1%) did not use a comprehensive literature search strategy, and 56 (53.9%) lacked a registered protocol and did not justify protocol deviations. Abstract Reduced generation of multiple motile cilia (RGMC) represents a rare variant of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD), associated with CYCLIN‐O (CCNO) mutations. We report a novel compound mutation in the CCNO gene in an adult Chinese Singaporean exhibiting chronic productive cough since childhood and recurrent sino‐pulmonary infections. Low nasal nitric oxide and bronchiectasis suggests PCD. Bronchoscopy for epithelial and nasal brushings for ciliary studies were repeated after adequate treatment of lower respiratory tract infections. Demonstration of oligo‐cilia via transmission electron microscopy, and detection of CCNO mutation through genetic analysis were utilized to diagnose RGMC. Repeated courses of antibiotics including nebulised antibiotics were used to treat recurrent infections and exacerbations. Airway clearance techniques, immunizations and collaboration with otorhinolaryngologist form part of the long‐term management. Heightened clinical suspicion and adherence to established diagnostic algorithms are essential for timely recognition of this entity.

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a glycoprotein hormone synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, plays a critical role in reproductive development and regulation by binding to FSH receptor (FSHR). Beyond reproductive tissue, FSHRs have been identified in various non-reproductive tissues, indicating broader functions. FSH levels chronically rise during menopause and remain elevated in postmenopausal life. This increase in FSH level has been indicated to be associated with heightened risk of several non-reproductive diseases, including osteoporosis, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers. In this review, we will examine the role of FSH-FSHR signaling in the pathogenesis of these non-reproductive diseases and explore therapeutic strategies targeting FSH-FSHR signaling pathways.

Industrial wastewater management is a significant global challenge. Sludge microbiota from swine farms may play a crucial role in enhancing wastewater treatment processes, thereby reducing water pollution from industrial activities. A deeper understanding of this complex community could lead to innovative approaches for improving wastewater treatment methods. Sludge samples were collected from the anaerobic, sedimentation, and thickening tanks of ten swine farms. The microbiota communities were analyzed using 16S rRNA full-length sequencing on the PacBio platform, with subsequent data analysis conducted on the QIIME2 platform utilizing the SILVA database. Compared to anaerobic and thickening tanks, the sedimentation tanks exhibited a unique profile of sludge microbiota, with higher abundances of the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Caldatribacteriota. Additionally, sludges from farms already utilized in processing industrial water—specifically farms B, G, and J—contained higher concentrations of bacteria (>20 ng/μL), indicating the robustness of the bacterial load for practical industrial use. Furthermore, sludge from farms with higher alpha diversity, such as E, G, I, and J, exhibited enriched degradation profiles, including the degradation of aromatic compounds, polymers, industrial compounds, toluene, and vanillin. The farms were categorized based on wastewater ammonia nitrogen degradation levels, revealing a clustering effect of the microbiota from the sedimentation tanks in the Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) plot. A higher relative abundance of the families Rhodocyclaceae, AKYH767, and Comamonadaceae, and a lower abundance of the families Anaerolineaceae and Christensenellaceae, were found in groups with high ammonia nitrogen reduction, suggesting potential targets for bioaugmentation strategies. In conclusion, this study underscores the critical role of microbial abundance, composition, and biodiversity in optimizing wastewater treatment and advocates for comprehensive microbiota analysis to identify suitable sludge for industrial applications.

Bartonella quintana is one of the main causes of blood culture-negative endocarditis, and routine blood culture and serological methods are difficult to achieve early diagnosis. We report a case of blood culture-negative Bartonella quintana endocarditis from southwestern Chongqing. The patient was a 67-year-old male scavenger who presented with heart failure without fever as the main clinical manifestation upon admission. He stated having had contact with stray cats in the past 2 months. The combination of clinical symptoms, echocardiography, and blood mNGS testing confirmed the infection of Bartonella quintana.

Objective We examined the factors influencing hospitalization and prognosis among patients with non-small cell lung cancer receiving epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) targeted therapy during the first wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods In total, 267 patients diagnosed with NSCLC who were receiving treatment with third-generation EGFR-TKIs were included in our retrospective study. Data on patients’ demographics, clinical characteristics, and survival were collected and analyzed. Results Over a mean follow-up of 18 months, 80.5% (215/267) of the patients contracted COVID-19, and 12.6% (27/215) of these patients were hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment. Objective To evaluate the prevalence, resistance and risk factors of community-onset urinary tract infections (COUTIs) caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) for providing a basis for the selection of clinical therapeutic agents.Design A retrospective case–control study.Setting The Affiliated Dazu Hospital of Chongqing Medical University (also known as The People’s Hospital of Dazu Chongqing), a 1000-bed tertiary hospital in China.Data and participants This study encompassed adult patients diagnosed with community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by E. coli between May 2017 and December 2022 with exclusion criteria including incomplete clinical data, disagreement to participate in the study, hospitalisation duration exceeding 48 hours prior to confirmation of diagnosis and prior history of urinary tract infection caused by E. coli.Outcome measures The risk factors for COUTIs caused by ESBL-EC were evaluated using a case–control design, defining patients who were diagnosed with UTIs and had an ESBL-positive urine culture as the case group and patients who were diagnosed with UTIs and had an ESBL-negative urine culture as the control group. ABSTRACT: Meat qualities of free-range chicken (Xuan-Zhou) (XZ-FRC) are closely associated with slaughter age and directly influence the economic benefits of supplier and consumer's preference. Understanding of the relationship between meat qualities and ages will be of prime important to explore a better slaughter age of XZ-FRC. In this study, the quality traits of breast and thigh muscles from XZ-FRCs at 9 to 14 wk were analyzed to establish a relatively reliable method for selecting a better slaughter age. The results showed that the effects of slaughter ages on color (CIE L*, a* and b* values), shear force, centrifugal loss, and flavor of XZ-FRCs were significant (P < 0.05). There were greater differences in meat qualities, whatever breast or thigh muscles, between same or different ages. Eleven feature indexes used for colligation evaluation of slaughter age were selected by combining the quality characteristics and data analysis. The score of colligation evaluation for XZ-FRCs at 12 wk was higher than that at 9 and 14 wk, suggesting that the 12 wk was an optimal slaughter age. This work would provide a reference method that helps the producers of livestock and poultry to select a better slaughter age.

Abstract Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and is associated with cervical, anogenital, and oropharyngeal cancers. It is crucial to improve vaccination uptake in both genders as primary prevention for these conditions. Pediatricians play an active role in advocating for HPV vaccination and our study aims to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes, barriers, and practices among pediatric trainees and general pediatricians regarding HPV infection and vaccination. A survey‐questionnaire was administered to our target groups. It comprised 14 questions regarding demographics of the healthcare provider, knowledge of HPV infection and vaccination, practices and barriers of recommending HPV vaccination, and effective strategies for improving HPV vaccine uptake. Among survey respondents, majority did not recommend for HPV vaccination (66.7%) or receive any enquiry about it (80.6%) within the preceding 12 months. The most common perceived barrier was inadequate knowledge, which was consistent with the misconceptions regarding HPV infection and vaccination that were identified in this survey. Strategies which physicians felt would be most effective in increasing vaccine uptake include educating and providing resources for both physicians and caregivers as well as making the vaccine free. Our study revealed a low advocacy rate for HPV vaccination. Physicians need to be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources to better counsel caregivers as well as focus our efforts on vaccinating male patients in order to increase vaccine uptake in both genders.

AIM: To gain insights into the global research hotspots and trends of myopia. METHODS: Articles were downloaded from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022 from the Science Core Database website and were mainly statistically analyzed by bibliometrics software. RESULTS: A total of 444 institutions in 87 countries published 4124 articles. Between 2013 and 2022, China had the highest number of publications (n=1865) and the highest H-index (61). Sun Yat-sen University had the highest number of publications (n=229) and the highest H-index (33). Ophthalmology is the main category in related journals. Citations from 2020 to 2022 highlight keywords of options and reference, child health (pediatrics), myopic traction mechanism, public health, and machine learning, which represent research frontiers. CONCLUSION: Myopia has become a hot research field. China and Chinese institutions have the strongest academic influence in the field from 2013 to 2022. The main driver of myopic research is still medical or ophthalmologists. This study highlights the importance of public health in addressing the global rise in myopia, especially its impact on children's health. At present, a unified theoretical system is still needed. Accurate surgical and therapeutic solutions must be proposed for people with different characteristics to manage and intervene refractive errors. In addition, the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) models are also reflected in disease monitoring and prediction.

The change of water content, mildew of Liupao tea at 35 ℃, 30 ℃, 25 ℃ and humidity of 90%, 80% and 70% were studied. The influence of temperature and humidity on water content and mildew of Liupao tea was analyzed, and the temperature and humidity conditions of Liupao tea were determined. The parameters of spore counting method applied to Liupao tea were optimized and the feasibility of spore counting method in predicting the mildew degree of Liupao tea was evaluated. The results showed that temperature below 25 ℃ and humidity below 70% were the best storage conditions for Liupao tea to prevent mildew. The increase level of spore number and the degree of mildew were synchronized. This method was feasible for rapid assessment of mildew of Liupao tea, and the critical value of the number of spores with mildew was preliminarily determined to be 30.00×107 ·g–1. The results of this study could provide a theoretical basis for the safe storage conditions of Liupao tea, and a new method for rapid assessment of its mildew degree.

Objective To explore the therapeutic mechanism of Shuiluerxian Pills (SP) for diabetic kidney disease (DKD) with the aids of network pharmacological methods and in vivo experiments. Methods The active components and related targets of SP were screened by the TCM Systematic Pharmacological database and analysis platform (TCMSP). The above chemical constituents and target information were supplemented by literature searches to further correlating the target of DKD in the disease database. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed with the String software. Enrichment analysis was performed with R language and complex network model established. The levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-1β in kidney were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the expressions of key proteins verified by Western blot. The pharmacodynamic mechanism of SP for DKD was preliminarily predicted. Results A total of 376 potential DKD therapeutic targets were identified. The "composition-disease-target" network diagram implied that kaverol and astragaloside IV were the major active components of SP formula to play the therapeutic role of DKD. Its common pathways were correlated with the pathways of phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE). The experimental results indicated that SP could effectively reduce the level of inflammatory factors in diabetic rats, enhance the protein expressions of Nephrin and Podocin and lower the protein expressions of p-PI3K/PI3K and p-Akt/Akt. Conclusions SP may play a role in the treatment of DKD through regulating PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, suppressing inflammatory responses and renal tissue fibrosis. The treatment of DKD offers the characteristics of multi-component, multi-target and multi-pathway.

This study provides detailed description of a newly-discovered Callicarpa yongshunensis Wen B. Xu, Xiao D. Li & Yan Ling Liu (Lamiaceae) species from Hunan, China. The species shares similarities in the inflorescence, glandular colour and leaf shape features with C. luteopunctata H. T. Chang and C. giraldii Hesse ex Rehd., while its white fruits are similar to those of C. longifolia Lamk. However, its procumbent, evergreen shrub and white fruits are distinctly different from those of C. luteopunctata and C. giraldii, while its procumbent, scarless nodes and stellate pubescence free fruits distinguishes it from C. longifolia. Images, distribution, morphological features, molecular phylogenetic classification and conservation assessment of this new Callicarpa species are explored.
