Nowadays, thermal infrared satellite remote sensors enable to extract very interesting information at large scale, in particular Land Surface Temperature (LST). However such data are limited in spatial and/or temporal resolutions which prevents from an analysis at fine scales. For example, MODIS satellite provides daily acquisitions with 1Km spatial resolutions which is not sufficient to deal with highly heterogeneous environments as agricultural parcels. Therefore, image super-resolution is a crucial task to better exploit MODIS LSTs. This issue is tackled in this paper. We introduce a deep learning-based algorithm, named Multi-residual U-Net, for super-resolution of MODIS LST single-images. Our proposed network is a modified version of U-Net architecture, which aims at super-resolving the input LST image from 1Km to 250m per pixel. The results show that our Multi-residual U-Net outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

The task of person re-identification (ReID) is to match images of the same person over multiple non-overlapping camera views. Due to the variations in visual factors, previous works have investigated how the person identity, body parts, and attributes benefit the person ReID problem. However, the correlations between attributes, body parts, and within each attribute are not fully utilized. In this paper, we propose a new method to effectively aggregate detailed person descriptions (attributes labels) and visual features (body parts and global features) into a graph, namely Graph-based Person Signature, and utilize Graph Convolutional Networks to learn the topological structure of the visual signature of a person. The graph is integrated into a multi-branch multi-task framework for person re-identification. The extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach on two large-scale datasets, including Market-1501 and DukeMTMC-ReID. In this paper, we study the learning rate of generalized Bayes estimators in a general setting where the hypothesis class can be uncountable and have an irregular shape, the loss function can have heavy tails, and the optimal hypothesis may not be unique. We prove that under the multi-scale Bernstein's condition, the generalized posterior distribution concentrates around the set of optimal hypotheses and the generalized Bayes estimator can achieve fast learning rate. Our results are applied to show that the standard Bayesian linear regression is robust to heavy-tailed distributions.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have emerged as useful generative models, which are capable of implicitly learning data distributions of arbitrarily complex dimensions. However, the training of GANs is empirically well-known for being highly unstable and sensitive. The loss functions of both the discriminator and generator concerning their parameters tend to oscillate wildly during training. Different loss functions have been proposed to stabilize the training and improve the quality of images generated. In this paper, we perform an empirical study on the impact of several loss functions on the performance of standard GAN models, Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks (DCGANs). We introduce a new improvement that employs a relativistic discriminator to replace the classical deterministic discriminator in DCGANs and implement a margin cosine loss function for both the generator and discriminator. This results in a novel loss function, namely Relativistic Margin Cosine Loss (RMCosGAN). We carry out extensive experiments with four datasets: CIFAR-$10$, MNIST, STL-$10$, and CAT. We compare RMCosGAN performance with existing loss functions based on two metrics: Frechet inception distance and inception score. Autonomous driving is an active research topic in both academia and industry. However, most of the existing solutions focus on improving the accuracy by training learnable models with centralized large-scale data. Therefore, these methods do not take into account the user's privacy. In this paper, we present a new approach to learn autonomous driving policy while respecting privacy concerns. We propose a peer-to-peer Deep Federated Learning (DFL) approach to train deep architectures in a fully decentralized manner and remove the need for central orchestration. We design a new Federated Autonomous Driving network (FADNet) that can improve the model stability, ensure convergence, and handle imbalanced data distribution problems while is being trained with federated learning methods. Intensively experimental results on three datasets show that our approach with FADNet and DFL achieves superior accuracy compared with other recent methods. Bridging the semantic gap between image and question is an important step to improve the accuracy of the Visual Question Answering (VQA) task. However, most of the existing VQA methods focus on attention mechanisms or visual relations for reasoning the answer, while the features at different semantic levels are not fully utilized. In this paper, we present a new reasoning framework to fill the gap between visual features and semantic clues in the VQA task. Our method first extracts the features and predicates from the image and question. We then propose a new reasoning framework to effectively jointly learn these features and predicates in a coarse-to-fine manner. The intensively experimental results on three large-scale VQA datasets show that our proposed approach achieves superior accuracy comparing with other state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, our reasoning framework also provides an explainable way to understand the decision of the deep neural network when predicting the answer., Comment: Accepted in CVPR 2022 Workshops

Unsupervised Deep Distance Metric Learning (UDML) aims to learn sample similarities in the embedding space from an unlabeled dataset. Traditional UDML methods usually use the triplet loss or pairwise loss which requires the mining of positive and negative samples w.r.t. anchor data points. This is, however, challenging in an unsupervised setting as the label information is not available. In this paper, we propose a new UDML method that overcomes that challenge. In particular, we propose to use a deep clustering loss to learn centroids, i.e., pseudo labels, that represent semantic classes. During learning, these centroids are also used to reconstruct the input samples. It hence ensures the representativeness of centroids - each centroid represents visually similar samples. Therefore, the centroids give information about positive (visually similar) and negative (visually dissimilar) samples. Based on pseudo labels, we propose a novel unsupervised metric loss which enforces the positive concentration and negative separation of samples in the embedding space. There is a warning light for the loss of plant habitats worldwide that entails concerted efforts to conserve plant biodiversity. Thus, plant species classification is of crucial importance to address this environmental challenge. In recent years, there is a considerable increase in the number of studies related to plant taxonomy. While some researchers try to improve their recognition performance using novel approaches, others concentrate on computational optimization for their framework. In addition, a few studies are diving into feature extraction to gain significantly in terms of accuracy. In this paper, we propose an effective method for the leaf recognition problem. In our proposed approach, a leaf goes through some pre-processing to extract its refined color image, vein image, xy-projection histogram, handcrafted shape, texture features, and Fourier descriptors. These attributes are then transformed into a better representation by neural network-based encoders before a support vector machine (SVM) model is utilized to classify different leaves. Overall, our approach performs a state-of-the-art result on the Flavia leaf dataset, achieving the accuracy of 99.58\% on test sets under random 10-fold cross-validation and bypassing the previous methods. Accurate insect pest recognition is significant to protect the crop or take the early treatment on the infected yield, and it helps reduce the loss for the agriculture economy. Design an automatic pest recognition system is necessary because manual recognition is slow, time-consuming, and expensive. The Image-based pest classifier using the traditional computer vision method is not efficient due to the complexity. Insect pest classification is a difficult task because of various kinds, scales, shapes, complex backgrounds in the field, and high appearance similarity among insect species. With the rapid development of deep learning technology, the CNN-based method is the best way to develop a fast and accurate insect pest classifier. We present different convolutional neural network-based models in this work, including attention, feature pyramid, and fine-grained models. We evaluate our methods on two public datasets: the large-scale insect pest dataset, the IP102 benchmark dataset, and a smaller dataset, namely D0 in terms of the macro-average precision (MPre), the macro-average recall (MRec), the macro-average F1- score (MF1), the accuracy (Acc), and the geometric mean (GM). The experimental results show that combining these convolutional neural network-based models can better perform than the state-of-the-art methods on these two datasets. For instance, the highest accuracy we obtained on IP102 and D0 is $74.13\%$ and $99.78\%$, respectively, bypassing the corresponding state-of-the-art accuracy: $67.1\%$ (IP102) and $98.8\%$ (D0). In this paper, we propose SPBERT, a transformer-based language model pre-trained on massive SPARQL query logs. By incorporating masked language modeling objectives and the word structural objective, SPBERT can learn general-purpose representations in both natural language and SPARQL query language. We investigate how SPBERT and encoder-decoder architecture can be adapted for Knowledge-based QA corpora. We conduct exhaustive experiments on two additional tasks, including SPARQL Query Construction and Answer Verbalization Generation. The experimental results show that SPBERT can obtain promising results, achieving state-of-the-art BLEU scores on several of these tasks.

The missing data problem has been broadly studied in the last few decades and has various applications in different areas such as statistics or bioinformatics. Even though many methods have been developed to tackle this challenge, most of those are imputation techniques that require multiple iterations through the data before yielding convergence. In addition, such approaches may introduce extra biases and noises to the estimated parameters. In this work, we propose novel algorithms to find the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) for a one-class/multiple-class randomly missing data set under some mild assumptions. As the computation is direct without any imputation, our algorithms do not require multiple iterations through the data, thus promising to be less time-consuming than other methods while maintaining superior estimation performance. We validate these claims by empirical results on various data sets of different sizes and release all codes in a GitHub repository to contribute to the research community related to this problem., Comment: 28 pages, 3 tables, 40 references

MLOps is about taking experimental ML models to production, i.e., serving the models to actual users. Unfortunately, existing ML serving systems do not adequately handle the dynamic environments in which online data diverges from offline training data, resulting in tedious model updating and deployment works. This paper implements a lightweight MLOps plugin, termed ModelCI-e (continuous integration and evolution), to address the issue. Specifically, it embraces continual learning (CL) and ML deployment techniques, providing end-to-end supports for model updating and validation without serving engine customization. ModelCI-e includes 1) a model factory that allows CL researchers to prototype and benchmark CL models with ease, 2) a CL backend to automate and orchestrate the model updating efficiently, and 3) a web interface for an ML team to manage CL service collaboratively. Our preliminary results demonstrate the usability of ModelCI-e, and indicate that eliminating the interference between model updating and inference workloads is crucial for higher system efficiency.

Conventional approaches to image-text retrieval mainly focus on indexing visual objects appearing in pictures but ignore the interactions between these objects. Such objects occurrences and interactions are equivalently useful and important in this field as they are usually mentioned in the text. Scene graph presentation is a suitable method for the image-text matching challenge and obtained good results due to its ability to capture the inter-relationship information. Both images and text are represented in scene graph levels and formulate the retrieval challenge as a scene graph matching challenge. In this paper, we introduce the Local and Global Scene Graph Matching (LGSGM) model that enhances the state-of-the-art method by integrating an extra graph convolution network to capture the general information of a graph. Specifically, for a pair of scene graphs of an image and its caption, two separate models are used to learn the features of each graph's nodes and edges. Then a Siamese-structure graph convolution model is employed to embed graphs into vector forms. We finally combine the graph-level and the vector-level to calculate the similarity of this image-text pair. The empirical experiments show that our enhancement with the combination of levels can improve the performance of the baseline method by increasing the recall by more than 10% on the Flickr30k dataset.
