critical optimism, digital epistemology, SIoT - Abstract
This paper offers an epistemological and theoretical framework, and a research agenda, to face the main ethical and social pitfalls of the deployment of big data and IoT in social domains (SIoT). We rely on the concept of critical optimism to explain epistemic orientation about the technological future, paying particular attention to the social challenges. The framework drives the creation of an agenda for social researchers that aids to detect more evidence on the SIoT opportunities., Italian Sociological Review, V. 12 N. 7S (2022)

- Abstract
The growing masses of digital traces generated by the datafication process make the algorithms that manage them increasingly central to contemporary society. There is widespread agreement in considering traces and algorithms as complex objects that intertwine social and material practices with their own cultural, historical, and institutional nature (Halford et al., 2010).Accordingly, given this strong intertwining between the social world and the digital world that is formed by material and technological objects, it becomes possible to consider the algorithms and traces as socio-digital objects. For this reason, this article aims to identify the features that allow us to frame them as socio-digital objects starting from concepts borrowed from the actor-network theory (Latour and Woolgar 1879). In particular, we will first discuss opacity, authority and autonomy concepts and then see how those features emerge in digital geographical traces.

The debate on the consequences that big data and computational techniques have generated in social sciences has developed from two opposite extremes. A consistent group of scholars today supports an active commitment of sociologists in dealing with the technological dimension of social investigation. The works developed by these “digital sociologists” focus on the definition of a method of social research that adopts a critical posture on the role that digital technology must have in scientific research but, at the same time, creative on the possibilities offered by technology to research. This posture requires great attention to the epistemology of the digital.

The attention paid to the impact of big data and computation on the tool-kit of social scientists has not been matched by an equivalent interest in the many epistemological questions that these digital methods evoke. Here we propose a series of epistemological warnings about the limits of the scientific knowledge produced through digital methods, and we closely examine how these methods change the relationships between subject and object, data and theory, methods and data. In order to support an active commitment by social scientists to explore the digital dimension of social inquiry, it is critical to adopt a methodological posture that is able to elaborate research designs with and against the digital, trying to exploit what digital techniques can provide as an added value, while testing their reliability with regard to other techniques, including the qualitative ones.

The diffusion of digital technologies and social networks has multiplied the forms of digital data that can be employed for social research. Digital data however require adequate methods. They do not necessary demand computational techniques, but specific skills. For example, machine learning, sentiment analysis, or social network analysis are rooted in content analysis, agent-based modeling, or network analysis.

Coronavirus, giornalismo, digitalizzazione, organizzazione, lavoro - Abstract

After ten years that the debate on big data, computation and digital methods has been a contested epistemological terrain between some who were generally optimistic, and others who were generally critical, a large group of scholars, nowadays, supports an active commitment by social scientists to face the digital dimension of social inquiry. The progressive use of digital methods needs to be sustained by an abductive, intersubjective and plural epistemological framework that allows to profitably include big data and computation within the different paradigmatic traditions that coexist in our disciplines. In order to affirm this digital epistemology it is critical to adopt a methodological posture able to elaborate research designs with and against the digital, trying to exploit what digital techniques can give as added value, but going to test their reliability, alongside others techniques, including qualitative ones.

Sustainable Development Goal ,Sustainability ,Economic Area, Environmental Area, Social Area, Sustainable Development Goals, Sustainability - Abstract
Sustainability is a complex multidimensional phenomenon, which was studied for couple decades already. Nowadays different social concepts, such as sustainability, but also quality of life, satisfaction, are difficult and complex to define. The main problem for researchers is to find appropriate tools to synthesize and represent these phenomena. This chapter aimes to propose PLS-PM as a method for studying existing sustainability indicators and demonstrate how it could help to provide a better measure of this complex multidimensional social phenomenon.

PLS-PM, SEM - Abstract
PLS-PM is one of the methods from the broad family of PLS techniques. Also known as the PLS approach to Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), it can be used to model theoretical concepts through constructs and connect these constructs via a structural model to study their relationships. Originally developed by Herman Wold to analyze high-dimensional data in a low-structure environment, PLS-PM has become a widely used variance- based estimator for SEM over the past decade. Consequently, PLS-PM has been applied, both in various fields of business administration research such as strategy, marketing, operations management, human resource management, tourism, both in social science researches to measure very complex phenomena like poverty, progress, wellbeing. The objective of this book is on the one hand to emphasize the basic concepts and some recent developments of the PLS-PM method, and on the other hand to present some realworld application of the PLS-PM method in social in science fields.

Pandemia, algoritmi - Abstract
Prefazione Enrica Amaturo.

In this chapter we show some methodological developments in the PLS-PM, which, recently, are applied to social sciences, to study complex phenomena such as poverty, well-being, sustainability. In particular, developments for the treatment of non metric data and hierarchical data can really help strongly in building Model Based Social Indicators.

Higher Order Construct Model ,Adolescent ,Sexism ,Violence - Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of the Legitimacy of Violence among teenagers through a Partial Least Squares Path Modeling based on higher order construct modeling. The latent concept of Legitimacy of Violence is not present in literature; it was built ad hoc at a high level of abstraction, formed by two dimensions that until now have always been considered and analyzed separately: an aptitude for violence and ambivalent sexism. In order to analyse this concept, a Partial Least Square Path Modeling is proposed with the aim of studying how these dimensions formed a higher order latent concept.

europeanization, european integration, social policy, welfare regimes, comparative network analysis - Abstract
In this chapter, a re-arrangement of the differences within the various European welfare regimes could be hypnotized starting from the social implications and the effects that European Integration and Europeanization processes have on these regimes. In other words, this means highlighting the dual thrust between Europeanization and decentralization of social policy, in order to understand at what level of governance – local, national or supranational – could be attributed the decisions that shape this area field by collecting and analyzing a set of indicators on the two specifics dimensions: social inclusion and territorial cohesion. With this aim, the indicators’ analysis here presented involve five the 27 European Nations at NUT0 and NUT2 level which in 2014 constituted the member states of the union (Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and United Kingdom) and ten local contexts, two for each Nation (Milan and Naples, Berlin and Munich, Paris and Rouen, Barcelona and Vigo, London and Liverpool). What result is a comparative geographic and policy analysis based on a multidimensional and multilevel analysis of indicators from Eurostat and OECD databases that start from with the application of a Pls-Pm Model. This model could contemplate jointly the study of supranational, national, and subnational directions allowing us to detect who in addressing social policies and welfare regimes in Europe. The main result consists of the realization of a general model of interpretation of the changes that occurred in the classification of the different European welfare regimes.

Profiles of Religiosity ,Naples, Social Capital ,Cultural Capital ,Multidimensional Content Analysis - Abstract
This paper aims to study the relationship between religion and social capital considering young people living in Naples. The article discusses how the combination of different levels of social capital and religiosity can help us to identify profiles (or types) of religiosity. To accomplish this goal techniques of multivariate analysis were carried out. The results compare the level of conceptualization and the level of religious practices detected in the profiles, allowing to highlight the continuity and discontinuity in practices, identification and positioning of the young people in the local sample with respect to religion.
