117. Impact of Sleep Bruxism on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life.

Abstract

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of possible tooth grinding (TG) and possible sleep bruxism (SB) and to examine their impacts on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among Asian adults.Materials and Methods: A total of 3,072 subjects (18 to 65 years of age) from 12 dental centers were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire on TG/SB and OHRQoL, and 2,417 were included in the study. Participants were subsequently categorized into three groups (no TG/SB, possible TG, and possible SB) based on the International Classification of Sleep Disorders. The 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) severity, extent, and prevalence scores were subsequently computed and compared. Data were examined using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests, Spearman correlation, and univariate regression analysis (P < .05).Results: Of the 2,417 subjects (mean age 24.79 ± 7.49 years), 42.82% reported either possible TG (n = 921; 38.11%) or possible SB (n = 114; 4.72%). Significant differences in global and domain OHIP-14 scores were found between the groups, except for the extent scores in functional limitation and physical disability. Mean global severity scores of the possible SB group (9.36 ± 9.45) were 1.5- and 2.2-fold larger than the possible TG (6.39 ± 7.61) and no TG/SB (4.22 ± 6.15) groups, respectively. A significant but weak correlation (r = 0.14 to 0.19) was found between the number of positive responses for TG/SB and OHIP-14 severity scores.Conclusions: A high prevalence of possible TG and SB was found among the Asian cohort studied. Possible TG and SB were significantly associated with poorer OHRQoL. The physical pain, psychologic discomfort, and psychologic disability domains were most influenced by TG/SB. More epidemiologic studies on the functional, physical, and psychosocial influences of SB are required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We prove that many representations $\overline{\rho} : \Gal(\overline{K} / K) \to \GL_2(\bbF_3)$, where $K$ is a CM field, arise from modular elliptic curves. We prove similar results when the prime $p = 3$ is replaced by $p = 2$ or $p = 5$. As a consequence, we prove that a positive proportion of elliptic curves over any CM field not containing a 5th root of unity are modular.

137. Canada's Golden Horseshoe: An ESL/Geography Module (Teacher's Guide).

Abstract

A teacher's guide to an English as a second language (ESL) and geography module entitled "Canada's Golden Horseshoe" is presented. ESL modules are multimedia kits designed to integrate the study of ESL and communication skills in specific subject areas of the curriculum. This module deals with a geographical region, important both to Ontario and to Canada, that has an interesting history and some modern environmental problems. The module is designed primarily for ESL secondary-school students at the intermediate level, and has been successfully test-taught in a number of grade 9 and 10 ESL and ESL geography classes in southern Ontario. It is assumed that all students who use the kit will have completed an introductory course of English. The teacher's guide offers suggestions for use of module components, a transcription of the audiocassette, answer keys to student worksheets, proposed followup activities, and a list of resources. The module provides exercises to develop reading, writing, and listening skills, graphing techniques, individual research, and other communication skills. One module component covers the major study of physical and economic characteristics of the region using a filmstrip and student booklet, both entitled "The Golden Horseshoe." In a second component, the settlers who over the years formed the labor force of the region are described in an audiocassette tape entitled "Canadians from Many Lands." An additional student booklet entitled "The Changing Mosaic" focuses on one important pattern of immigrant settlement in Metropolitan Toronto. (SW)

138. The Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching: An Observation Scheme.

Abstract

A classroom observation technique that describes classroom events at the level of activity and analyzes the communicative features of verbal exchanges between students and teachers within each activity is described. Activity characteristics indentified include type, participant organization, content, student modality or skills used, and materials; the communicative features observed include the use of the target language, information gap, sustained speech, reaction to code or message, incorporation of preceding utterances, discourse initiation, and relative restriction of linguistic form. Coding procedures have been developed for both the activity analysis and the exchange analysis. Preliminary data analysis from initial use of the coding technique reveals significant differences in communicative orientation between French and English second language classes at two grade levels. Additional data for different class types (core, extended, immersion, and second language French classes) are under analysis. (MSE)

Abstract

Arabidopsis thaliana MYB5 collaborates with TRANSPARENT TESTA GLABRA1 (TTG1) and basic-Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors to regulate seed coat, trichome and root cell differentiation. Using a yeast two-hybrid system we show that the N-terminal region of MYB5 binds directly to the serine/threonine CASEIN KINASE2 BETA3 (CK2β3) subunit. Functions of the CASEIN KINASE2 (CK2) complex include facilitating phosphorylation of MYB transcription factors and cell cycle checkpoint regulatory proteins. Purified recombinant MYB5 protein was found to bind only weakly in vitro to the promoter of ALPHA/BETA ESTERASE/HYDROLASE4 (ABE4), a known MYB5 target gene. We propose that phosphorylation of MYB5 facilitated by the MYB5-CK2β3 interaction enhances MYB5 binding to its target gene promoters.
