The age and sex composition of the schools, food activity, the age of sexual maturity, breeding period and fecundity of the alien species Prussian carp indicate the presence of favorable environmental conditions for its wide distribution in the reservoirs of Armenia. The ratio of female/male of Prussian carp in most of the studied reservoirs was 3 : 1; most of the fish were diploids. The age composition of Prussian carp usually has 4 age groups, with maximum of 7 groups, and a minimum of 3 age groups. The age of sexual maturity of Prussian carp differs in the northern (1+ to 4+) and southern (0+ to 3+) populations in Armenia, as well as in flowing and stagnant water bodies. In some reservoirs, the percentage of Prussian carp in catches has increased over the past decades, which negatively affects the local fish species composition. The freshwater gastropod mollusk Lithoglyphus naticoides (C. Pfeiffer, 1828) naturalized successfully in the Rybinsk Reservoir and in the Uglich Reservoir in 2005–2011 and 2013–2015, respectively. The aim of this work is to study the structure of trematode communities in settlements of L. naticoides formed by 2019 in the upper parts of these water bodies. It is found that, in both reservoirs, the species composition of trematodes is similar and includes Apophallus muehlingi (Jägerskiöld, 1899), Apophallus (=Rossicotrema) donicus (Skrjabin et Lindtrop, 1919), Parasymphylodora markewitschi Kulakowskaja, 1947, Nicolla skrjabini (Iwanitzky, 1928), and Sanguinicola volgensis (Razin, 1929). The density of L. naticoides varies from 30 to 50 ind./m2 in the shallows of the Rybinsk Reservoir and from 50 to 520 ind./m2 in the Uglich Reservoir, where the mollusk is found at the depth of 2–9 m. In August 2019, the prevalence of parthenitae varied at different degrees even in relatively flowing upper parts of the reservoirs similar in hydrological characteristics: Apophallus spp. (32.01 and 11.45%), P. markewitschi (9.14 and 7.63%), N. skrjabini (16.57 and 7.63%), S. volgensis (19.43 and 63.36%). In the Uglich Reservoir, Xiphidiocercaria sp. (9.16%) has been recorded, though their species has not yet been determined. A single case of mixed infection with parthenitae of trematodes (Sanguinicola + Nicolla) was recorded in the Rybinsk Reservoir in 2019. In the Uglich Reservoir, mixed infection with two species of parasites is more common (Parasymphylodora + Xiphidiocercaria, Sanguinicola + Xiphidiocercaria, Sanguinicola + Parasymphylodora, Sanguinicola + Nicolla). Owing to the high occurrence of some trematodes, L. naticoides is able to have a significant impact on the ecosystems of reservoirs by the development of foci of the helminthoses even with a relatively low size of its populations. Introduced herbivores often alter predator–prey dynamics between native organisms. We investigated whether the exotic mite Raoiella indica can interfere in the predation relationships between the predator Amblyseius largoensis and the native herbivorous mite Oligonychus pratensis and be favored as a result. Populations of A. largoensis were established in laboratory, one reared with exotic prey and another with native prey. For each population, of A. largoensis were evaluated for: egg-to-adult developmental time, oviposition rate, and feed conversion efficiency (FCE) of females. Also, to observe the interaction with prey, behavioral tests were conducted, evaluating the time to the first attack, oviposition site preference, and prey preference consumption. Regardless of prey offered, there was no prey effect on immature developmental time or female oviposition rate. However, A. largoensis showed superior FCE feed on exotic (11.4%) over native prey (3.9%). Both A. largoensis populations preferred to prey on eggs of native species and also tended to choose oviposition sites containing native prey eggs. Those reared on exotic prey attacked their first prey in less time than those reared on native prey. Therefore, the presence of R. indica affects both predator population growth and the feeding preference for native prey, which causes a risk of displacement of O. pratensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forests support a variety of functions essential for the provisioning of ecosystem services. However, invasive plants can disrupt forest functioning, particularly in temperate forest understories that commonly experience invasive plant encroachment, by altering community-level trait distributions. Invasive plants, frequently characterized by acquisitive traits such as higher specific leaf area and nitrogen content, may either outcompete native species with different trait values (displacement), or add trait values to the existing community (complementarity). Therefore, complementarity may still allow restoration of the original community function by removing invasive species, and consequently the added provision of function when compared to the natives, but displacement may not. While understanding which process occurs is critical in managing ecosystem functionality, little is known about the impact of invasion on the co-occurring native community trait distributions. To address this knowledge gap, we leveraged survey data on temperate forest understories that varied in their degree of invasion (i.e., gradient of invasion). We calculated the community- weighted mean of three leaf traits: leaf nitrogen, specific leaf area, and leaf dry matter content -- traits strongly linked to invasion, sensitive to environmental changes, and that affect ecosystem functions. Our findings show that increasing invasion had a significant positive effect on total (native and invasive) community leaf nitrogen, but did not alter native community trait distributions. This suggests that potential impacts on ecosystem functions, such as increased primary productivity and nitrogen cycling, would be primarily driven by trait complementarity and not displacement. We did not find any significant differences in the total or native communities with respect to specific leaf area or leaf dry matter content. Differentiating trait displacement from trait complementarity contributes to our understanding of how invasion affects functionality of understory plant communities in forests. Ecological Niche Models (ENMs) are often used to project species distributions within alien ranges and in future climatic scenarios. However, ENMs depend on species‐environment equilibrium, which may be absent for actively expanding species. We present a novel framework to estimate whether species have reached environmental equilibrium in their native and alien ranges. The method is based on the estimation of niche breadth with the accumulation of species occurrences. An asymptote will indicate exhaustive knowledge of the realised niches. We demonstrate the CNA framework for 26 species of mammals, amphibians, and birds. Possible outcomes of the framework include: (1) There is enough data to quantify the native and alien realised niches, allowing us to calculate niche expansion between the native and alien ranges, also indicating that ENMs can be reliably projected to new environmental conditions. (2) The data in the native range is not adequate but an asymptote is reached in the alien realised niche, indicating low confidence in our ability to evaluate niche expansion in the alien range but high confidence in model projections to new environmental conditions within the alien range. (3) There is enough data to quantify the native realised niche, but not enough knowledge about the alien realised niche, hindering the reliability of projections beyond sampled conditions. (4) Both the native and alien ranges do not reach an asymptote, and thus few robust conclusions about the species' niche or future projections can be made. Our framework can be used to detect species' environmental equilibrium in both the native and alien ranges, to quantify changes in the realised niche during the invasion processes, and to estimate the likely accuracy of model projections to new environmental conditions. Invasive alien species are among the most pervasive threats to biodiversity. Invasive species can cause catastrophic reductions in populations of native and endemic species and the collapse of ecosystem function. A second major global conservation concern is the extirpation of large‐bodied mobile animals, including long‐distance migrants, which often have keystone ecological roles over extensive spatial extents. Here, we report on a potentially catastrophic synergy between these phenomena that threatens the endemic biota of the Galapagos Archipelago. We used GPS telemetry to track 140 migratory journeys by 25 Western Santa Cruz Island Galapagos tortoises. We plotted the spatial interaction between tortoise migrations and recently established non‐native forest dominated by the invasive tree Cedrela odorata (Cedrela forest). We qualified (a) the proportion of migratory journeys that traversed Cedrela forest, and (b) the probability that this observed pattern occurred by chance. Tortoise migrations were overwhelmingly restricted to small corridors between Cedrela forest blocks, indicating clear avoidance of those blocks. Just eight of 140 migrations traversed extensive Cedrela stands. Tortoises avoid Cedrela forest during their migrations. Further expansion of Cedrela forest threatens long‐distance migration and population viability of critically endangered Galapagos tortoises. Differences in the number of alien plant species in different locations may reflect climatic and other controls that similarly affect native species and/or propagule pressure accompanied with delayed spread from the point of introduction. We set out to examine these alternatives for Himalayan plants, in a phylogenetic framework. We build a database of alien plant distributions for the Himalaya. Focusing on the well‐documented regions of Jammu & Kashmir (west) and Bhutan (east) we compare alien and native species for (1) richness patterns, (2) degree of phylogenetic clustering, (3) the extent to which species‐poor regions are subsets of species‐rich regions and (4) continental and climatic affinities/source. We document 1470 alien species (at least 600 naturalised), which comprise ~14% of the vascular plants known from the Himalaya. Alien plant species with tropical affinities decline in richness with elevation and species at high elevations form a subset of those at lower elevations, supporting location of introduction as an important driver of alien plant richness patterns. Separately, elevations which are especially rich in native plant species are also rich in alien plant species, suggesting an important role for climate (high productivity) in determining both native and alien richness. We find no support for the proposition that variance in human disturbance or numbers of native species correlate with alien distributions. Results imply an ongoing expansion of alien species from low elevation sources, some of which are highly invasive. Several reasons have been proposed for why alien species richness patterns vary across the globe, but they are rarely compared in a comprehensive test. Here we build a complete database of Himalayan alien plant species and show that both location of introduction and climate per se are likely important in explaining elevational and geographical patterns of species diversity. Ayer Hitam Utara State Park Forest (AHUSPF) is an invaluable sanctuary in Johor, the last remaining intact peat swamp forest reserve that hosts many species unique to this distinctive habitat. Some rapid surveys conducted from 2019 to 2022 recorded 40 species of freshwater fish within AHUSPF. Notably, 11 are stenotopic to acid blackwater, and 12 are stenotopic to acid water, most belonging to the family Osphronemidae and Danionidae. The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List has designated two species, Encheloclarias curtisoma and Betta persephone, as Endangered, while Betta omega is classified as Critically Endangered. The checklist presented herein was first produced from an inventory study in AHUSPF. The preservation of peat swamp forests in the area is under imminent threat due to the alarming rate of land conversion, forest fires, and the recent potential threat from the red-claw crayfish invasion in the aquatic environment. Hence, continuous monitoring is vital for documenting and updating the conservation status of the fish species. From the 1990s, the Southeast Asia native giant resin bee Megachile sculpturalis (Smith, 1853) was introduced first to North America, and then to many countries in Europe. Despite increasing studies on its invasive potential and geographical expansion, information on nesting behaviour of this species is still extremely scarce. To increase knowledge on the nesting biology of M. sculpturalis , we studied multiple aspects of nesting and pollen provisioning in three consecutive years in artificial nests in Bologna, Italy. We observed 166 bees visiting nests, and followed individual nesting behaviour and success of 41 adult females. We measured cavity diameter in 552 nests and characterised the structure in 100 of them. More than 95% of nest diameters ranged between 0.6 and 1.2 cm, overlapping with several sympatric species of cavity-nesting hymenopterans in the study area. Most nests had a first chamber from the entrance of variable length without brood, followed by an average of about two brood cells with a mean length of 2.85 ± 0.13 cm each. The pollen stored in brood cells was almost monofloral, belonging to the ornamental plant Styphnolobium japonicum (L.) Schott. We estimated that a single female should visit ≈180 flowers to collect enough pollen for a single brood cell. These results fill knowledge gaps on the nesting biology and nest structure of the exotic M. sculpturalis , and they are discussed in relation to possible competition with native bees for nesting sites and foraging resources. In recent years, introduced synanthropic species of the order Zygentoma (especially Ctenolepisma longicaudatum and C. calvum) have begun to spread in Central Europe. The two above-mentioned non-native species of silverfish have also recently been confirmed in Slovakia. This paper aims to comment on the occurrence of the two non-native species in Slovakia, to compile an identification key for all (i.e. also native) Slovak silverfish species and establish local species names. Range‐expansion and speciation are not new to life on Earth, but they have been scarcely observed contemporarily and, likely, never over several continents simultaneously. Evidence of incipient reproductive isolation between native and non‐native regions of some invasive alien species indicates that invasive speciation is closer than we expected. Some neo‐allopatric populations are likely to qualify as distinguishable subspecies already. Given their trajectory, whether they will become new species is not an if, but a when. I present two decision tables to help to (1) assess the coining of new invasive species or subspecies with the current taxonomical approach or (2), introduce the term "neo" to name invasive neo‐species resulting from synchronous allopatric speciation from a single, known, living ancestor. Photinus signaticollis Blanchard, 1846 (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) is a firefly native to South America and recently established in Europe. Since 2016, this firefly has colonized the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula and crossed the Pyrenees to reach southern France in 2019. The larvae of this firefly feed on earthworms, so a high density of this species could negatively impact this key group in soil processes and agriculture. The precise extent of colonization, the environmental niche and the potential range expansion in non-native areas are currently unknown. Using species distribution models, we have found the high suitability areas across Europe where P. signaticollis may become established if introduced. Interestingly, using only South American records and associated conditions modelling it can be strongly predicted where the species is currently found in Europe. Despite a few propagules of P. signaticollis detected in very unsuitable areas of Spain were no longer detected after their initial observation, the climatic niche overlap between South America and Europe populations appeared to be very low. In our case, this pattern is more likely to reflect a high unfilled niche rather than a niche expansion or niche shift, because many occupied areas in South America possess a climate not occurring in Europe. Among the considered variables, we furthermore found that only the temperature seasonality appeared to be the same in both native and European areas and relevant in the models, suggesting that it may represent the main limiting factor for establishing this firefly. Implications for insect conservation: The introduction and population expansion of a non-native firefly is a novel event in European communities and the effects are unpredictable: through their interspecific competition with native fireflies and possible interactions with other insects, they could disrupt fragile surface balances, and their feeding on earthworms could potentially affect soil communities and processes. Hydrogel baits are composed of an insecticide and sugar water solution that is sustained by a super-absorbent polymer. This novel bait formulation has been increasingly used for controlling invasive ant species, as they prefer liquid foods and bait stations, which can be both costly and wasteful, are not required. Despite usage trends, the preference of invasive ants for hydrogel baits when compared with other food sources has not yet been widely demonstrated. This study evaluated the recruitment of the invasive Argentine ant Linepithema humile (Mayr) to various food sources, including hydrogel bait formulations containing sugar and insecticides (thiamethoxam, clothianidin), sugar water, tap water, a commercial paste-type fipronil bait, and a shrimp-flavored snack. The hydrogel baits and sugar water had equal recruitment levels for L. humile, irrespective of the sugar and insecticide concentrations (average 100–500 ants to approximately 4 × 4 cm placement). The recruitment levels for the hydrogel baits were also equal to or greater than those for the commercial paste bait (50–150 ants). However, overall, the shrimp-flavored snack was the food source with the highest levels of recruitment (500–800 ants). The results suggest that in the field, L. humile is moderately to highly interested in hydrogel baits. Hydrogel baits may not be the most efficient bait formulation for recruiting L. humile, but they are a powerful control option due to their advantages such as low cost, which enables thorough treatment. Adriatic Sea is a diverse marine ecosystem that supports a rich biodiversity of polychaete species on soft and hard-bottoms, with 764 recorded species in the latest inventory list. Benthic surveys conducted in 2018 in the hard-bottom infralittoral zone on the east coast of the central Adriatic Sea revealed one previously unreported species for the Adriatic Sea, Syllis kabilica Ben-Eliahu, 1977 (Syllidae), as well as two species reported for the first time in the eastern Adriatic Sea, Syllis tyrrhena (Licher and Kuper, 1998) (Syllidae), and Streblosoma nogueirai Lezzi and Giangrande, 2019 (Terebellidae). Furthermore, one alien species was identified, Lysidice collaris Grube, 1868 (Eunicidae). Anadara kagoshimensis (Tokunaga, 1906) is an invasive bivalve mollusk colonizing the Black Sea and Azov Sea. The content of 16 proteinogenic amino acids was determined in their hemolymph and soft tissue protein hydrolysates via ion-exchange chromatography followed by ninhydrin detection. High histidine and proline levels were detected both in hemolymph and in soft tissue hydrolysates. Experimental hypoxia caused qualitative and quantitative changes in the content of free amino acids, namely the pool of aliphatic amino acids decreased 2-fold, while the pool of aromatic amino acids conversely increased. It is assumed that the metabolism of A. kagoshimensis shifts under hypoxic conditions toward anaerobic catabolism of amino acids and proteins as a source of substrates for the tricarboxylic acid and ornithine cycles. This leads to a significant accumulation of arginine, which is an allosteric activator of ornithine cycle reactions, and urea, which is a low-molecular-weight (LMW) antioxidant. Thereby, an LMW component of the antioxidant defense system forms in A. kagoshimensis, as manifested in high levels of such free radical scavengers as histidine and urea, which may contribute to the invasion success of this alien bivalve species in the Black and Azov Seas. Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacquin) J.F. Macbride, a native of South America, is recorded for the first time from Mechinagar municipality of south-eastern Nepal. This weed has already been in the neighboring north-east region of India since the 1950s and might have recently spread into south-eastern Nepal where it is colonizing riparian habitats. Vilbasteana oculata (hemipteran) and Otiorhynchus smreczynskii (beetle) are alien species in countries around the Baltic Sea, and they are continuing to spread. Sometimes when entering new areas where other plant species are found, herbivores tend to add to their range of food plants. Knowledge of the feeding trends of particular insect species can be useful in predicting possible changes in insect-plant trophic relationships in other regions where they expanding in range. This study looks at the feeding trends of two insect species - V. oculata and O. smreczynskii. The study was carried out mainly in Latvia, as well as in other expeditions in Estonia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. In this study, four Fraxinus and four Ligustrum species were confirmed as the new food plants for V. oculata. The main food plants for adults of O. smreczynskii probably originally belonged to the genera Ligustrum and Syringa. In this study, a number of alternative food plants have been recorded for the first time, generally woody and some herbaceous plants. Most of the newly registered food plants for O. smreczynskii belong to the families Oleaceae and Rosaceae. Other food plants belong to the families Adoxaceae, Celastraceae, Elaeagnaceae, Ericaceae, Grossulariaceae, and Rhamnaceae. Although Svalbard archipelago is considered as a natural laboratory for the environmental studies in the High Arctic, the knowledge on the transport and diversity of bioaerosols (aeroplankton) in the atmosphere is poorly recognized. To improve our knowledge about the aeroplankton over the Svalbard, we conducted a short-term study in the central part of the archipelago with a special focus on two important, but understudied in this region, airborne components: pollen grains and invertebrates. Aerobiological traps, three impact-type samplers and 12 pitfall-type water traps, were operated for a week of July 2022 at three sites located near Longyearbyen, the largest settlement of Svalbard. These sites, that is, Platåfjellet, Longyearbreen Glacier, and glacier valley, varied in the local sources of biological material and altitude. In total, 11 pollen taxa were isolated from pollen impactors. Most of them (68%) belonged to non-native plants, for example, Alnus sp., Betula sp., Picea abies, or Pinus sylvestris-type pollen. In pitfall-type water traps, we found invertebrates representing Acari (Prostigmata, Endeostigmata and Oribatida), Collembola (Agrenia bidenticulata), Tardigrada (Eutardigrada) and Rotifera (Bdelloidea). The most taxa-rich site, both for pollen and invertebrates, was Platåfjellet, characterized by open landscape dominated by small cryptogams, mainly lichens and mosses, and sparse patches of vascular plants. Even though our sampling was short-term, we found diverse taxa belonged to native and alien species, indicating that both local and long-range transport shape aeroplankton composition and seeding of Arctic habitats. Long-term aerobiological monitoring in diverse ecosystems of Svalbard is needed to understand spatio-temporal influence of aeroplankton on ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Anticipating the ultimate fraction of a landscape that might be susceptible to invasion is challenging as several species are able to expand the range of environmental conditions used over invasion. Despite its relevance, the more proximate processes underlying observed shifts are not sufficiently understood. Habitat selection theory predicts that as population density increases, individuals start using sub‐optimal resources to compensate for the limitation of the preferred ones. However, niche shifts might also occur as result of changes in habitat preferences over time. Here, we tested these alternative hypotheses by investigating nesting resource use and selection over a biological invasion and the relative effect of density‐dependence on such patterns. Location: Barcelona, Spain. Methods: We take advantage of a large dataset recording the occurrence of the invasive monk Parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus in Barcelona in the period 1975–2015. We apply generalized linear models to analyse changes in nesting habitat preferences and its interactive effect with conspecific presence. Results: Temporal changes in nesting habitat use occurred. Palm species were the most commonly used nesting substrate since the beginning of the invasion but the diversity and frequency of use of other nesting substrates increased over time. Changes in nesting substrate use were consistent with a change in habitat selection, when accounting for habitat availability. Although a general role of conspecific aggregation on occupation patterns was found, it was mostly additive. That is, shifts in nesting substrate did not structure in relation to conspecific distribution. Conclusions: Shifts in nesting resource selection can occur during the spread stage of biological invasions, probably related to innovation and learning, rather than to optimal habitat selection. These shifts present a significant challenge for forecasting efforts and management. Aim: Human activities have introduced numerous non‐native species (NNS) worldwide. Understanding and predicting large‐scale NNS establishment patterns remain fundamental scientific challenges. Here, we evaluate if NNS composition represents a proportional subset of the total species pool available to invade (i.e. total global biodiversity), or, conversely, certain taxa are disproportionately pre‐disposed to establish in non‐native areas. Methods: We compiled one of the most comprehensive global databases of NNS (36,822 established species) to determine if NNS diversity is a representative proportional subset of global biodiversity. Results: Our study revealed that, while NNS diversity mirrors global biodiversity to a certain extent, due to significant deviance from the null model it is not always a representative proportional subset of global biodiversity. The strength of global biodiversity as a predictor depended on the taxonomic scale, with successive lower taxonomic levels less predictive than the one above it. Consequently, on average, 58%, 42% and 28% of variability in NNS numbers were explained by global biodiversity for phylum, class and family respectively. Moreover, global biodiversity was a similarly strong explanatory variable for NNS diversity among regions, but not habitats (i.e. terrestrial, freshwater and marine), where it better predicted NNS diversity for terrestrial than for freshwater and marine habitats. Freshwater and marine habitats were also greatly understudied relative to invasions in the terrestrial habitats. Over‐represented NNS relative to global biodiversity tended to be those intentionally introduced and/or 'hitchhikers' associated with deliberate introductions. Finally, randomness is likely an important factor in the establishment success of NNS. Main conclusions: Besides global biodiversity, other important explanatory variables for large‐scale patterns of NNS diversity likely include propagule and colonization pressures, environmental similarity between native and non‐native regions, biased selection of intentionally introduced species and disparate research efforts of habitats and taxa. The introduction of exotic species is currently the second largest cause of extinction. In this sense the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) stands out, given its wide distribution and adaptive plasticity. Understanding the dynamics of dog occurrence in natural areas is of major importance in order to understand the impacts on native fauna. In this work, we aimed to carry out an updated survey of the presence of dogs in the Area of Relevant Ecological Interest Mata of Santa Genebra, focusing on the number of individuals, their periods and areas of greatest activity. Sampling was carried out using cameratraps on nine different trails in the area, with a sampling effort of 2754 camera-days. A total of 316 mammal records were obtained of which 28% documented the presence of dogs. The results point to greater activity of dogs in areas of extensive trails, clearings and forest edge, in addition to the preference for night periods and rainy season. The results were compared with the periods of activity of native nonflying mammals of the area, obtaining a similar occupation of places and periods, both of domestic dogs and native fauna. Istiblennius cf. meleagris (Blenniidae) was observed and photographed in 2017 in Lebanese waters. With this note we report additional records of this non-native and likely invasive species in the eastern Mediterranean. The spatio-temporal variation in the hybridization status of non-native distributed rosy bitterlings Rhodeus ocellatus subspecies, Rhodeus ocellatus kurumeus and Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus, in the rivers of the Himi region, Toyama Prefecture, central Japan was examined. Genetic analyses based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA showed that individuals with genetic characteristics of both subspecies inhabit these rivers. The molecular phylogenetic tree suggests that such hybrids might have been unintentionally introduced to the Himi region from the Osaka region. Hybridization between the two subspecies was thought to be repeated in the Himi region, and the frequency of occurrence of hybrid individuals showed spatio-temporal variation possibly due to random fluctuations. The detection of the R. o. kurumeus haplotype, which has not been reported in natural habitats, in the Himi region suggests that a genetic legacy remains among individuals artificially introduced to various regions via hybrid individuals. The alien freshwater mussel Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) has rapidly spread throughout Europe over the past decades. This species can cope with a broad range of environmental conditions and has a high reproductive capacity making S. woodiana a successful invader. Due to its negative effects on native freshwater mollusk communities and parasitized fish it is critical to identify suitable habitats where S. woodiana may persist and how these habitats may be altered under future climate projections. We applied multivariate ordination methods to analyze the space-time relationship and a maximum entropy approach (MaxEnt) to predict the recent (1970-2000) and future (2041-2060 and 2081-2100) distribution of S. woodiana using environmental and climate variables for the European continent. After first sightings in 1979 there were only a few new locations and findings which increased unevenly and exponentially to a maximum of about 100 new locations per year followed by decline during the last few years. Under recent climate condition, 2.3% of European watersheds are predicted as highly suitable habitat for S. woodiana and located in the temperate climate zone between 40°N and 60°N. Suitable habitat was associated with lowland watersheds characterized by fluviatile deposits and agriculture. Elevation, the distance between water bodies, land cover and mean temperature of the coldest quarter were the main factors influencing the modeling results. For future climate scenarios, highly suitable habitat increased to 2.4% by the middle of this century and decreased to 2.2% by the end of the century under the 'least radiative forcing' scenario. For the intermediate and high radiative forcing in 2050 and 2100, highly suitable habitat decreased to 2.2% and 1.7% and to 2.2% and 2.2%, respectively. Results from our study can be used as a baseline to better understand potential invasion pathways, identify high risk areas, and to initiate early detection and rapid response strategies. Species richness is a fundamental property of biodiversity patterns and is properly expressed by the species–area relationship (SAR), namely the increase in the number of species with the area. Here, we studied and explored the species–area relationship with respect to vascular plant species in Italy and compared vascular plant richness among Italian administrative regions. Concerning the entire vascular flora (native and alien), the best-performing formula is the Arrhenius' Power function: S = c Az. The constants of this function are c = 241.2 and z = 0.281. The best-performing formula concerning just native (c = 245.2 and z = 0.263) and alien (c = 10.1 and z = 0.404) richness is the Power function as well. The floristically richest Italian regions considering the entire flora are Liguria, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige, which are also the regions that are richest in alien flora unfortunately. Regions of particular naturalistic interest are Abruzzo, Valle d'Aosta, and Molise, because only these three regions exhibit native floristic richness that is higher than expected, and this is coupled with an alien floristic richness that is lower than expected. On the contrary, four regions (Lombardia, Veneto, Toscana, and Emilia-Romagna) show potentially severe conservation problems due to biological invasions since they experience native floristic richness that is lower than expected, with an alien floristic richness that is higher than expected. This study offers for the first time the 'c' and 'z' constants specifically calibrated at the national level for Italian vascular flora. The availability of such constants allows the calculation of the number of expected species for a given area to be investigated, providing a robust starting hypothesis for floristic studies. Measuring impacts of non-native species is challenging, particularly for long-established invasions in poorly characterised native ecosystems. Recreating historical population dynamics using dendrochronological methods is a popular approach for addressing conservation and forest management questions. However, these tools are rarely applied for addressing questions of invasion. Classical dendrochronology is also not well suited to many tropical tree species as they do not produce growth rings. Here we test the validity of an alternative approach, based on the analysis of multiple morphological markers, that could allow for both the recreation of historical invasion dynamics as well as quantify the impacts of invasion on the recipient native ecosystem. We validate this method on the Cecropia peltata invasion in Cameroon and its potential impacts on a native tree, Musanga cecropioides. We were able to compare architectural development over time in a mixed secondary forest where the two species co-occur and revealed differences in performance (growth, branching and flower production) between the two tree species. Our results revealed more sustained growth during early establishment and an early sexual maturity for the non-native C. peltata, compared to its native counterpart. A lower density of M. cecropioides was observed in the region of co-occurrence, supporting a hypothesis of competitive exclusion of the native species at the juvenile stage. Our work provides a novel way to understand the impacts of plant invasions via retrospective analysis that could well be applied to other invasions globally, opening up more opportunities to prioritise management on an impact-focused basis. Abstract Marine protected areas (MPAs) can protect and restore marine biodiversity and fisheries, but there are concerns that they may also benefit invasive species. The spatial and temporal colonization of invasive lionfish (Pterois miles) in the eastern Mediterranean was compared across zones with varying fishing restrictions (no fishing, recreational and commercial fishing, and commercial fishing only), and stations where targeted removal events were conducted by volunteer SCUBA divers. Lionfish density in no fishing areas was nearly double that of areas with commercial fishing only, and over four times greater than in areas where both commercial and recreational fishing were allowed. Lionfish density increased with depth, possibly due to easier human exploitation in shallow waters (0–10 m) that are accessible to recreational spearfishers. Targeted removals by volunteer divers decreased lionfish densities by over 60%, while areas without removals had a 200%–400% increase. Along with management actions, natural and ecological processes might drive lionfish densities within MPAs, and the speed with which lionfish colonized fishery‐restricted zones, emphasized the need for a more sophisticated MPA management strategy that considers invasive species impacts and dynamics in an ecosystem‐based approach.

Fisheries-dependent data and information gathered through fisheries-related scientific surveys can significantly contribute to research on the patterns and processes underlying marine biological invasions and their interactions with fisheries. This study presents an overview of the presence of non-native fish species in the North Aegean Sea, offering insights into their distributions and impact on fisheries. The findings are based on a comprehensive compilation of commercial fisheries-dependent and scientific survey data collected in Greece from 2016 to 2023, along with a systematic review of the international scientific literature. The study resulted in the documentation of the presence of 37 non-native fish species, including several recorded for the first time in the area. The results suggest that non-native fish species invasions in the North Aegean Sea are dynamic. Although most species were classified as casual, and the frequencies of occurrence as well as the quantities in commercial fisheries catches of established species are smaller than in the South Aegean Sea, species introductions and the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of several species have been increasing since the 2000s. The significance of non-native fish species is becoming increasingly relevant to commercial fisheries in the study area. This is particularly evident in the Northeastern Aegean Sea, where catches of non-native species are on the rise, and new species with potential commercial value have emerged in recent years.

Opsanus beta is endemic to the Gulf of Mexico and has recently been introduced to the Brazilian coast; probably the introduction is via ballast water and/or oil rigs. In this study, the reproduction and age of the species were recorded for the first time in Guaratuba Bay. The two specimens analyzed in this study were caught by sport fishermen. Sex and stage of gonadal maturation were histologically analyzed, and the age was determined by cross-sectioning the sagitta otoliths. The female showed 29 cm total length (TL) and 396 g total weight (TW), and the male showed 21 cm LT, 168 g WT, and 2 years of age. The gonadal histology demonstrated the female and male as capable of spawning. Despite the small sample, reproduction shows that there is an established population of O. beta in Guaratuba Bay.

Abstract Invasive freshwater aquatic plants can have adverse ecological effects on the systems to which they are introduced, changing ecosystem function, threatening native plant species and causing billions of dollars in damage to infrastructure. Additionally, once established, invasive aquatic plants are often difficult to eradicate or control. Given the importance of managing invasive aquatic plants, and the high associated economic costs of doing so, it is essential to determine the relative effectiveness of different control methods. Here, we present a protocol for a systematic review that will estimate the effectiveness of various biological, chemical, habitat manipulations and/or manual/mechanical methods for eradicating or controlling invasive plant abundance and biomass. This systematic review will use published and grey literature, without date restriction, that determines the effectiveness of invasive plant control methods. English‐language searches will be performed using five bibliographic databases, Google Scholar, and networking tools to find relevant literature. Eligibility screening will be conducted at two stages: (1) title and abstract and (2) full text. Studies that evaluate the effectiveness of methods for controlling the abundance or biomass or eradicating invasive plants will be included. A list of plant species currently, or potentially, in Canadian freshwater systems and of management concern will be considered. Included studies will undergo critical appraisal of internal study validity. We will extract information on study characteristics, intervention and comparator details, measured outcomes (abundance and biomass, broadly defined) and effect modifiers (e.g., plant growth pattern or timing of treatments). A narrative synthesis will be used to describe the quantity and characteristics of the evidence base, while quantitative synthesis (i.e., meta‐analysis) will be conducted to estimate an overall mean and variance of effect when sufficient numbers of similar studies are available.

Amaranthus emarginatus belongs to the Amaranthus blitum complex, a critical taxonomic group. Within the variability of A. emarginatus, two taxa are often accepted, ‘emarginatus’ and ‘pseudogracilis’, which differ by habitus, synflorescence structure, and leaf size. However, their taxonomic value is debated, and A. emarginatus itself is sometimes included in A. blitum as subspecies. In this paper, molecular, morphological, phytogeographical, and ecological data are discussed to assess the most correct rank of these taxa. We conclude that A. emarginatus deserves specific distinctness from A. blitum, and A. pseudogracilis can be regarded as a subspecies of the former. This choice reflects both the molecular data and geographical distributions of A. blitum and A. emarginatus, i.e., Mediterranean area, Europe, and North Africa for the former vs. neotropics for the latter). Within A. emarginatus, in addition, to the different morphology, A. emarginatus var. pseudogracilis differs also on account of its ecological preferences, because it occurs in warm and humid areas, whereas A. emarginatus var. emarginatus is better adapted to cold and dry habitats. However, since molecular analyses cannot clearly separate the two taxa, we consider the subspecific rank as the most appropriate. We also found a further morphological difference in seed coat ornamentation, hitherto not pointed out: the shape of the peripheral cells is tetragonal in A. emarginatus subsp. pseudogracilis, but polygonal (cells with ≥ 5 sides) in subsp. emarginatus. Distributional maps and status assessment at regional level for the two taxa are provided. According to this revision, A. emarginatus subsp. emarginatus is to be regared as naturalized in central and southern Italy (Latium and Campania, respectively).

The paper provides information on alien mammal species occurring in the territory of the Dnipro–Oril Nature Reserve. The data were collected during annual mammal surveys and by compiling the data provided in the Chronicles of Nature of previous years (1991–2022) within the framework of the scientific topic ‘Study of biodiversity, structure and dynamics of natural complexes of the Dnipro–Oril Nature Reserve.’ Since the creation of the reserve, 44 species of mammals belonging to six orders (Leporiformes, Muriformes, Soriciformes, Vespertilioniformes, Caniformes, and Cerviformes) have been recorded in its territory. The species diversity of mammals of the reserve corresponds to 71% of the mammal fauna of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and 34% of the mammal fauna of Ukraine. Most of the mammal species found in the reserve are indigenous but the raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides, muskrat Ondatra zibethicus, and sika deer Cervus nippon, which are artificially introduced species. In addition, the brown rat Rattus norvegicus and the house mouse Mus musculus are distant invaders. The beech marten Martes foina, Blyth’s pipistrelle Pipistrellus lepidus, and serotine bat Eptesicus serotinus are close invaders. Alien species make up 18% of the mammal fauna of the reserve, being represented by a total of eight species. However, there are also species with fluctuating ranges in the studied area: European roe deer Capreolus capreolus, elk Alces alces, Eurasian otter Lutra lutra, Eurasian badger Meles meles, and wild boar Sus scrofa. The periodic contraction and expansion of their ranges within the region makes them similar to introduced species. The presence of the majority of adventive species was registered during the first inventory of the fauna of the described territory during the establishment of the reserve in 1991. However, the first sighting of serotine bat occurred in March 2013 in the floodplain part of the reserve, and the sighting of Blyth’s pipistrelle in the reserve was recorded in the spring of 2016. The article describes the specifics of the existence of alien mammal species in the reserve. The dynamics of abundance, population structure, diet, and environmental impact are presented. Other adventive species that could possibly be found in this territory in the near future are the American mink Neogale vison and golden jackal Canis aureus. A case of visual observation of the coypu Myocastor coypus in the vicinity of the reserve is also presented.

The matter of presence of Sisymbrium orientale in the flora of Middle Asia long known in the region based on the single gathering from Turkmenistan is clarified. Occurrence of the species in the latter country is not confirmed because of incorrect identification of relevant collection which belongs to S. septulatum. At the same time, S. orientale is a novelty for the region based on its recent (2023) finding in Uzbekistan first reported here. Alien character of the gathering is proposed and further spread of the species in the Middle Asia is assumed.

The red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852), native to the southern/southeastern United States and northern Mexico, has been introduced in many countries worldwide. The species has a remarkable invasiveness due to its high reproductive rate and ability to tolerate broad ranges of water parameters like salinity. Nevertheless, no consistent observations of P. clarkii have been reported in the marine environment until now. Data demonstrating the presence of the crayfish within marine ecosystems were collected by a personal acquaintance and two volunteers who published photos of the species on Facebook marine biology and fishing groups. The species was identified based on photos taken by these people in the described areas. P. clarkii has been spotted in three different localities, in two of which observations are recurrent. The species can survive miles from the nearest freshwater stream and could potentially colonise marine waters at depths up to 20 m. The multiple observations of P. clarkii collected in our study uncover a persistent presence of the species within some marine areas, rather than its mere sporadic occurrence. Our results highlight the need for further investigation to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the crayfish’s ability to withstand salinity and colonise the marine environment.

This study was conducted to provide the coastal sand dunes flora of vascular plants in Chungcheong to Jeolla region based national coastal dune natural environment survey from 2018 to 2019. In the study area, a total 631 taxa, consisting of 119 family, 372 genera, 566 species, 8 subspecies, 50 varieties, and 7 forma, were found. Among them, there were 95 taxa with 23 family, 66 genera, 99 species and 5 varieties as alien species. The number of alien species ranged from 7 to 45 on each coastal sand dune. The largest number was recorded in Sinjimyeongsa dune, while the lowest was in Namujeon dune. Moreover, ecosystem disturbing species had mainly existed on Sinhap dune. Japanese hop (Humulus japonicus) were distributed most widely on 17 coastal sand dune, and bur cucumber (Sicyos angulatus) was only found on Sinhap dune. The spatial status of flora of coastal sand dune in our data can be basic ecological information for the conservation and management of the coastal dune plant species diversity.

Parthenocissus inserta (A. Kern.) Fritsch. adapts to living in the forests of Ukraine. The influence of P. inserta on native species and its consortial ties with representatives of the secondary ranges biota, in particular birds, has not been studied. The purpose of this study is to make an inventory of the consorts’ ornithocomplexes of P. inserta, to give a comparative analysis of topic and trophic consorts as a result of an introduced species’ participation in the transformation of habitat’s conditions. The material was collected from 2019 to 2022 in forest parks and urban green spaces of the Kyiv city. The bird distribution was determined by the standard method of counting birds at points. Exactly 12.2 ha of P. inserta plantations were surveyed. Trophic consortium relationships of P. inserta with 32 bird species and topic ones with six bird species were revealed. The species composition of consorts was higher in forest fragments than in urban plantations (26 and 21 species, respectively). In the ornithocomplexes of P. inserta consorts in forest biotopes, there was a smaller pressure of dominant species and a more evenly ranked distribution of species by abundance than in urbanized ones. The similarity of the consort’s species composition in urbanized and natural biotopes according to the Sorensen index was 0.64, in consorts 1 and 2 of the consortium concentres was 0.32, and in topic and trophic consorts was 0.27. According to the status of stay in the region, trophic consorts of P. inserta were mainly resident birds – 20 species (62.50%), wintering birds – six species (18.75%), and birds migrating through the region – six species of birds (18.75%). Among the topic consorts, there were four species of sedentary species and two species arriving for nesting. Principal component analysis revealed the largest positive relationship between P. inserta planting area and the number of consort bird species nesting (0.999) and feeding (0.889) on girlish vine plants. We predict that in the future, P. inserta will be more strongly woven into the matter cycle of the secondary range ecosystems. The study of consortial relationships between invasive plants and birds, taking into account the knowledge of the ecological characteristics of consort birds, will make it possible to more effectively prevent the spread of plants into natural biotopes.

The Trans-Siberian Railway connects Europe and Asia making the flora at this intersection of particular interest. When studying five railway stations and several spans of Perm Krai, 134 species of vascular (19 woody and 115 herbaceous) plants were identified. For comparison of local floras of the regions located along the Trans-Siberian Railway and adjacent to Perm Krai, we used the Sørensen’s similarity coefficient. The Perm section (Perm – Kungur) showed the best flora similarity with the European one and by the aboriginal fraction – with the West Siberian site.

The study of the aphid fauna in Kaliningrad Region (Russia) started in 60s of the 20th century, but a regional checklist has not been published yet. Based on material deposited in the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Belarusian State University and data scattered in various scientific publications, we compiled the first comprehensive list of aphids recorded from Kaliningrad Region. The list includes 61 genera, 110 species and two subspecies of which 30 species and one subspecies are recorded in the region for the first time. The recorded taxonomic diversity is lower than in the nearby countries – Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. At least 11 species (10% of the faunal list) are alien for the regional fauna.

Kapalo Banda Taram Tourism Area, Lima Puluh Kota Regency is one of the tropical rain forest areas in West Sumatra which has a high level of biodiversity that can be disturbed due to the presence of invasive plants, one of which is Bellucia pentamera. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of B. pentamera, to determine the effect of the number of Bellucian on the number of non-Bellucian and to determine the effect of distance from the river and light intensity on the distribution of B. pentamera. The research using the belt transect with a plot size of 20x50 m2. Data analysis using the Morisita Index and Simple Linear Regression formulas. The distribution of B. pentamera was quite large with the distribution pattern of B. pentamera sapling strata is clustered, while the tree strata had a uniform distribution pattern. The number of Bellucian individuals affects the presence of non-Bellucian individuals as indicated by a negative effect on species diversity, a decrease in the number of species, high dominance and habitat colonization which will limit resources and space for the growth of other species. The distance from the river affects the distribution of B. pentamera where the closer the distance from the river tends to increase the presence of B. pentamera, while the light intensity does not affect the presence of B. pentamera.

Solidago × niederederi (Asteraceae) is a natural hybrid of the native S. virgaurea and the alien invasive S. canadensis, originated in Europe. Its naturalisation potential is still questionable. One of the largest (more than 20 ramet clusters, treated as individuals) known population of this nothospecies, is located in the «Aleksin Bor» Natural Monument (Aleksin town, Tula Region, Russia) in the floodplain of the River Oka. We studied its genetic structure with the help of chloroplast and nuclear markers. Analysis of sequence of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer ITS 1–2 showed that all individuals with intermediate morphology are actually hybrids. Data on the intergenic chloroplast non-coding spacer rpl32–trnL showed that S. canadensis is the maternal species in 60% of the studied individuals. It was shown that even closely located individuals were not clones; therefore, they were results of sexual, rather than vegetative reproduction. Analysis of ISSR markers showed that the studied individuals of S. × niederederi in this population are not only F1 hybrids, but also their descendants (F2 hybrids and/or backcrosses, mostly with S. canadensis). We conclude that S. × niederederi has successfully been naturalised in the studied community and, possibly, is outcompeting its native parental species, S. virgaurea, through introgression.

The tubificid worm Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard, 1892 is one of the most successful invasive freshwater oligochaetes worldwide. In the Maghreb region, this species was known only from two localities in Morocco and from one locality in Libya. This paper presents novel information about the current distribution and presence of this invasive species in Morocco, and provides guidance on further areas of research regarding invasive oligochaetes in North African.

The research on the dendroflora of Chornobyl town 30 years after the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant reveal that the taxonomic composition of the town green spaces comprises of 87 species and 8 decorative forms of 29 families, 26 orders, 2 divisions. The composition of plantations is dominated by trees (63%), bushes (30%) and winding plants (7%). Despite the natural succession processes over the past 30 years, the plantations of Chornobyl are dominated by introducers, which make up 57% of the total number of taxa. The study of test areas reveals successional changes in the abandoned phytocoenoses of the town, which led to the expansion of the alien invasive species Acer negundo L., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Fraxinus pennsylvanica L. and Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch. The spread of alien invasive species is facilitated by droughts of long periods and the decrease in groundwater level. Climate change and the lack of proper agrotechnical care result in fungal diseases, damages caused by the semi-parasitic species Viscum album L. on decorative and fruit trees and bushes, both also leading to their expel from the town plantations.

Abstract Introduced species that spread and become invasive are recognised as a major threat to global biological diversity, ecosystem resilience and economic stability. Eradication is often a default conservation management strategy even when it may not be feasible for a variety of reasons. Assessment of the substantive socioeconomic and ecological impacts of invasive alien species (IAS), both negative and positive, is increasingly viewed as an important step in management. We argue that one solution to IAS management is to align models of alien species management with Indigenous management frameworks that are relational and biocultural. We make the theoretical case that centring Indigenous management frameworks promises to strengthen overall management responses and outcomes because they attend directly to human and environmental justice concerns. We unpack the origins of the ‘introduced species paradigm’ to understand how binary framing of so‐called ‘aliens’ and ‘natives’ recalls harmful histories and alienates Indigenous stewardship. Such a paradigm thereby may limit application of Indigenous frameworks and management, and impede long‐term biodiversity protection solutions. We highlight how biocultural practices applied by Indigenous Peoples to IAS centre protecting relationships, fulfilling responsibilities and realising justice. Finally, we argue for a pluralistic vision that acknowledges multiple alternative Indigenous relationships and responses to introduced and IAS which can contribute to vibrant futures where all elements of society, including kin in the natural world, are able to flourish.
