Solid particle ingestion is one of the principal degradation mechanisms in the compressor and turbine sections of gas turbines. In particular, in industrial applications, the microparticles not captured by the air filtration system can cause deposits on blading and, consequently, result in a decrease in the compressor performance. This paper presents three-dimensional numerical simulations of the microparticle ingestion (0.15–1.50 μm) in a transonic axial compressor stage, carried out by means of a commercial computational fluid dynamic code. Particles of this size can follow the main air flow with relatively little slip, while being impacted by the flow turbulence. It is of great interest to the industry to determine which zones of the compressor blades are impacted by these small particles. Particle trajectory simulations use a stochastic Lagrangian tracking method that solves the equations of motion separately from the continuous phase. A particular computational strategy is adopted in order to take into account the presence of two subsequent annular cascades (rotor and stator) in the case of particle ingestion. The proposed strategy allows the evaluation of particle deposition in an axial compressor stage, thanks to its capability of accounting for rotor/stator interaction. NASA Stage 37 is used as a case study for the numerical investigation. The compressor stage numerical model and the discrete phase model are set up and validated against the experimental and numerical data available in the literature. The blade zones affected by the particle impact and the kinematic characteristics of the impact of micrometric and submicrometric particles with the blade surface are shown. Both blade zones affected by the particle impact and deposition are analyzed. The particle deposition is established by using the quantity called sticking probability, adopted from the literature. The sticking probability links the kinematic characteristics of particle impact on the blade with fouling phenomenon. The results show that microparticles tend to follow the flow by impacting at full span with a higher impact concentration on the pressure side of rotor blade and stator vane. Both the rotor blade and stator vane suction side are only affected by the impact of smaller particles (up to 1 μm). Particular fluid dynamic phenomena, such as separation, shock waves, and tip leakage vortex, strongly influence the impact location of the particles. The kinematic analysis shows a high tendency of particle adhesion on the suction side of the rotor blade, especially for particles with a diameter equal to 0.15 μm.

Centrifugal pumps are used in many applications in which non-Newtonian fluids are involved, such as food industry and oil&gas applications, producing the pump performance derating. In order to give an overview of pros, cons of the different analytical approaches for pump performance derating a literature review on the most significant advances in this topic will be carried out. Moreover to deepen the knowledge about the internal flow and rheological behavior inside the centrifugal pumps working with non-Newtonian fluids, a detailed CFD analysis of two different pumps will be carried out. The analysis will be focus on the apparent viscosity correction involved in the performance derating with analytical methods and the effects of different types of fluid. Moreover the comparison of the results with two pumps with very different typology, field of application, and dimensions will help to generalize the meaning of the analysis.

The exploitation of low grade thermal sources is recognized as a feasible strategy in order to pursue the primary energy saving target worldwide. This concept, adaptable to a number of different applications, is aimed at exploiting low-value heat fluxes that would be wasted otherwise; additional useful electric power can be produced locally, with ORC energy systems; this is one of the most promising heat recovery solutions. In particular, the paper refers to the test bench developed in the laboratories of the University of Bologna; a prototypal micro-ORC energy system is here investigated. The micro-ORC system presents a reciprocating three-piston expander operated with refrigerant fluid. Heat is provided to the ORC from via hot water at low temperature, in order to simulate a constant low-enthalpy heat recovery process. The system rejects unused heat via a water-cooled condenser, dependent on the external ambient conditions. The test bench layout and the real-time data acquisition system, developed in the LabVIEW environment, are here described. In particular, the paper focus is on the system steady-state detection methodology. Starting from an experimental campaign, steady-state operational points are identified through an appropriate literature approach. The measured quantities and calculated performance have been post-processed in order to evaluate the influence on steady state detection, of different hot source temperature set points. Moreover, the selected steady-state detection method is suitable for real-time implementation, due to its simple formulation and the low number of variables required to be stored at time step of acquisition.

Fouling and erosion are two pressing problems that severely affect gas turbine performance and life. When aircraft fly through a volcanic ash cloud the two phenomena occur simultaneously in the cold as well as in the hot section of the engine. In the high pressure turbine, in particular, the particles soften or melt due to the high gas temperatures and stick to the wet surfaces. The throat area, and hence the capacity, of the HP turbine is modified by these phenomena, affecting the engine stability and possibly forcing engine shutdown. This work presents a model for deposition and erosion in gas turbines and its implementation in a three dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. Both deposition and erosion are kept into account, together with deposit detachment due to changed flow conditions. The model is based on a statistical description of the behaviour of softened particles. The particles can stick to the surface or can bounce away, eroding the material. The sticking prediction relies on the authors’ EBFOG model. The impinging particles which do not stick to the surface are responsible for the removal of material. The model is demonstrated on a high pressure turbine vane. The performance deterioration and the throat area reduction rate are carefully monitored. The safe-to-fly time through a cloud can be inferred from the outcome of this work as important piece of on-board information for the flight crew.

Solid particles ingestion is a severe problem for gas turbines. In the aero-propulsion field the main problems related to this phenomenon occur on the hot sections of the machinery. Impinging particles can stick or erode the blade material. The deposition on the turbine blades is the main issue among the two and the clogging of cooling holes can even speed up this process rising the blade surface temperature. An higher temperature affects negatively the deposition problems, increasing particle stickiness. In this paper an innovative approach to account for fouling and erosion effects on turbine vanes is presented. An energetic model to predict the sticking probability is used (EBFOG, from Energy Based FOulinG) and the erosion is evaluated through the model proposed by Tabakoff. Geometry variation of blades subject to fouling are investigated by means of a moving mesh technique which accounts for the boundary displacement of the blade surface.

In this paper experimental and CFD numerical analyses of an air-forced convection rotary bread-baking oven are presented. A particular experimental methodology for the thermo-fluid dynamic characterization of the rotary oven has been adopted. The purpose-designed on-board experimental apparatus represents a useful industrial test bench and, at the same time, can be used to collect data for the final user. The experimental apparatus can operate in stand-alone mode and under the actual cavity conditions in terms of temperature and humidity. A fully 3D numerical CFD model of the rotary bread-baking oven is proposed. By using the numerical model, validated by the experimental results, it is possible to highlight the airflow pattern inside the oven cavity and understand how the loaves change the airflow pattern inside the cooking chamber. Through the data collected using the experimental tests and CFD numerical simulations, some improvements in terms of airflow management inside the cooking chamber can be made. Through these improvements, the final user (as for instance bakers, either industrial or artisanal) can exploit several advantages in terms of energy saving and reduction of non-conformal baked products in relation with the localization of the recirculation zones and zones with higher velocity inside the oven cavity.

The quality and purity of the air entering a gas turbine is a significant factor influencing its performance and life. Foulants in the ppm range which are not captured by the air filtration system usually cause deposits on blading, which results in a severe drop in the performance of the compressor. Through the interdisciplinary approach proposed in this paper, it is possible to determine the evolution of the fouling phenomenon through the integration of studies in different research fields: (i) numerical simulation, (ii) power plant characteristics and (iii) particle-adhesion characteristics. In fact, the size of the particles, their concentrations and adhesion ability, and filtration efficiency represent the major contributors to performing a realistic quantitative analysis of fouling phenomena in an axial compressor. The aim of this work is the estimation of the actual deposits on the blade surface in terms of location and quantity. This study combines the impact/adhesion characteristic of the particles obtained through a CFD and the real size distribution of the contaminants in the air swallowed by the compressor. The blade zones affected by deposits are clearly reported by using easy-to-use contaminant maps realized on the blade surface, in terms of contaminant mass. The analysis has shown that particular fluid-dynamic phenomena and airfoil shape influence the pattern deposition. The use of a filtration system decreases the contamination of the blade and the charge level of the electrostatic seems to be less important than the air contaminant concentration. From these analyses, some guidelines for proper installation and management of the power plant (in terms of filtration systems and washing strategies) can be drawn up. Characterization of the air contaminants in the power plant location represents the most important step in improving the management of the gas turbine power plant.

Flow instability conditions, in particular during surge and stall phenomena, have always influenced the operational reliability of turbo-compressors and have attracted significant interest resulting in extensive literature. Nowadays, this subject is still one of the most investigated because of its high relevance on centrifugal and axial compressor operating flow range, performance and efficiency. Many researchers approach this important issue by developing numerical models, whereas others approach it through experimental studies specifically carried out in order to better comprehend this phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to experimentally analyze the stable and unstable operating conditions of an aeronautic turbo-shaft gas turbine axial-centrifugal compressor installed on a brand new test-rig properly designed for this purpose. The test facility is set up in order to obtain i) the compressor performance maps at rotational speeds up to 25,000 rpm and ii) the compressor transient behavior during surge. By using two different test rig layouts, instabilities occurring in the compressor, beyond the peak of the characteristic curve, are identified and investigated. These two types of analysis are carried out thanks to pressure, temperature and mass flow sensors located in strategic positions along the circuit. These measurement sensors are part of a proper control and acquisition system, characterized by an adjustable sampling frequency. Thus, the desired operating conditions of the compressor, in terms of mass flow and rotational speed and transient of these two parameters are regulated by this dedicated control system.

Biomass gasification is regarded as one of the most promising technology in the renewable energy field. The outcome of such operation, i.e. the synfuel, can be exploited in several ways, for example powering engines and turbines, and is considered more flexible than the biomass itself. For this reason, a careful analysis of the gasification performance is of paramount importance for the optimization of the process. One of the techniques that can be used for such a purpose, is the numerical analysis. CFD is indeed a tool that can be of great help in the design and study of the operation of the gasifier, allowing for an accurate prediction of the operating parameters. In this work, a downdraft gasifier is considered, and the biomass is made of wood chip. The present analysis is devoted to build the numerical model and simulate all the reactions that happen inside an actual gasifier, considering the drying of the wood chip, heating, pyrolysis, and combustion. Good match with experimental results is found, making the numerical model here presented a reliable virtual test bench where investigating the effects of variation in the working parameters.

In a traditional automotive cooling system, energy optimization could be achieved by controlling the engine temperature by means of several sensors placed inside the cooling circuit. Nevertheless, in some cases the increasing use of a great number of sensor devices makes the control system too bulky, expensive and not sufficiently robust for the intended application. This paper presents the development of a heavy-duty automotive cooling axial fan with morphing blades activated by Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) strips that work as actuator elements in the polymeric blade structure. The application of smart materials to compact, high-energy density devices as well as the development of modeling and control systems has been of great interest during the last decade. SMAs are frequently combined within monolithic or composite host materials to produce adaptive structures whose properties could be tuned in response to external stimuli. The blade was designed to achieve the activation of the strips (purposely thermo-mechanically treated) by means of an air stream flow. With the aim of studying the morphing capability of the adaptive structure together with the recovery behavior of the NiTi strips, four different polymeric compounds have been compared in a specifically-designed wind tunnel. Digital image analysis techniques have been performed to quantitatively analyze the blade deflections and to evaluate the most suitable polymeric matrix for the intended application. As the airstream flow increases in temperature, the strips recover the memorized bent shape, leading to a camber variation. To study the possibility of employing SMA strips as actuator elements, a comparison with common viscous clutch behavior is proposed. The time range actuator response indicates that the SMA strips provide a lower frequency control that fits well with the engine coolant thermal requirement. The experimental results demonstrate the capability of SMA materials to accommodate the lower power actuators in the automotive field. Finally, the blade tip airfoils, reconstructed using a CAD procedure, were used to study the fluid dynamic behavior of the blade tip airfoil. A CFD numerical simulation was carried out in order to highlight the differences in the airfoil performance due to the different shapes of the blade. The analyses showed that the activated blade tip airfoil led to an increase in the lift coefficient according to the stiffness provided by the polymeric compound. This innovative passive control system results from the selection of (i) the memorized shape of the SMA strips and (ii) the polymeric compound used for the blade structure.

The possibility to realize adaptive structures is of great interest in turbomachinery design, owing to the benefits related to enhanced performance and efficiency. To accomplish this, a challenging approach is the employment of shape memory alloys (SMAs), which can recover seemingly permanent strains by solid phase transformations whereby the so-called shape memory effect (SME) takes place. This paper presents the development of a heavy-duty automotive cooling axial fan with morphing blades activated by SMA strips that works as actuator elements in the polymeric blade structure. Concerning the fan performance, this new concept differs from a conventional viscous fan clutch solution especially during the nonstationary operating conditions. The blade design was performed in order to achieve the thermal activation of the strips by means of air stream flow. Two polymeric matrices were chosen to be tested in conjunction with a commercially available NiTi binary alloy, whose phase transformation temperatures (TTRs) were experimentally evaluated by imposing the actual operating thermal gradient. The SMA strips were then thermomechanically treated to memorize a bent shape and embedded in the polymeric blade. In a specifically designed wind tunnel, the different polymeric matrices equipped with the SMA strips were tested to assess the fluid temperature and surface pattern behavior of the blade. Upon heating, they tend to recover the memorized shape and the blade is forced to bend, leading to a camber variation and a trailing edge displacement. The recovery behavior of each composite structure (polymeric matrix with the SMA strips) was evaluated through digital image analysis techniques. The differences between the blade shape at the initial condition and at the maximum bending deformation were considered. According to these results, the best coupling of SMA strips and polymeric structure is assessed and its timewise behavior is compared to the traditional timewise behavior of a viscous fan clutch.

A large market potential for small electricity and heat generators can be identified in the domestic sector. Among the under development micro-scale power generation technologies the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) concept is a promising solution, already proven in the MW-range of power. There is still a prospective for smaller units for domestic users, with low temperature thermal demand. A test bench for a micro-CHP unit, currently run with a prototypal prime mover, is under development at University of Bologna. In particular, the system in study in the test facility is a micro-ORC system, rated for up to 3 kW. The ORC input heat is provided from an external source, which can be an external combustion system (a 46 kW biomass boiler will be connected to the thermal cycle) or an electric heater. The heat source delivers hot water to the bottoming ORC, currently operated with R134a as working fluid, which evolves in a recuperated cycle, with a 3-piston reciprocating expander, producing mechanical/electric power. The residual low-value heat is discharged to the environment with a water cooled condenser. The hot and cold water circuits have been realized in the lab to test the ORC performance. The micro-ORC internal layout and the external hot and cold water lines have been instrumented, implementing an acquisition and control software by means of LabVIEW software. A preliminary test campaign has been performed on the micro-ORC system, obtaining information on the actual thermodynamic cycle and the real performance under different operating conditions.

The ability of a morphing blade to change its geometry according to the different operating conditions represents a challenging approach for the optimization of turbomachinery performance. In this paper, experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical analyses on a morphing blade for a heavy-duty automotive cooling axial fan are proposed. Starting from the experimental results proposed in the first part of this work, a morphing blade, made of shape memory alloy (SMA) strips embedded in a polymeric structure, was thoroughly tested. In order to assess the ability of the strips to reach a progressive and smooth shape changing evolution, several experiments were performed in a purpose-built wind tunnel. The morphing blade changed its shape as the strips were thermally activated by means of air stream flow. The bending deformation evolution with the increasing number of thermal cycles was evaluated by digital image analysis techniques. After the analyses in the wind tunnel, CFD numerical simulations of a partially shrouded fan composed of five morphing blades were performed in order to highlight the evolution of the fan performance according to air temperature conditions. In particular, the capability of the blade activation was evaluated by the comparison between the fan performance with nonactivated blades and with activated blades. The results show a progressive stabilization of the shape memory behavior after the first cycle. The blade deformation led to a significant improvement in the fan performance at a constant rotational velocity. The CFD numerical simulation points out the differences in the overall performance and of three-dimensional fluid dynamic behavior of the fan. This innovative concept is aimed at realizing a sensorless smart fan control, permitting (i) an energy saving that leads to fuel saving in the automotive application fields and (ii) an increase in engine life, thanks to a strong relationship between the engine thermal request and the cooling fan performance.

It is of great interest to the manufacturer to discover the fouling phenomenon related to this type of compressor. This paper presents three-dimensional numerical simulations of the microparticle ingestion on a subsonic axial compressor rotor carried out by means of a commercial computational fluid dynamic code. Particle trajectory simulations use a stochastic Lagrangian tracking method that solves the equations of motion separate from the continuous phase. The number of particles, sizes, and concentrations are specified in order to perform a quantitative analysis of the particle impact on the blade surface. In this paper, the particle impact pattern and the kinematic characteristics (velocity and angle) of the impact are shown. Both of the blade zones affected by particle impact and the blade zones affected by particle deposition are analyzed. The particle deposition is established by using the quantity called sticking probability (SP). The SP links the kinematic characteristics of particle impact on the blade with fouling phenomenon. The results show that microparticles tend to follow the flow by impacting at full span with a higher impact concentration on the leading edge (LE). The suction side (SS) is affected only close to the LE and, at the hub, close to the trailing edge (TE). Particular fluid-dynamic phenomena such as separation, stagnation, and tip leakage vortex strongly influence the impact location of the particles. The kinematic analysis showed a high tendency of particle adhesion on the SS, especially for smaller particles for which the fluid dynamic phenomena play a key role regarding particle impact velocity and angle.

The compressor rotor numerical model and the discrete phase treatment have been validated against the experimental and numerical data available in literature. The number of particles, sizes, and concentrations are specified in order to perform a quantitative analysis of the particle impact on the blade surface. The results show that microparticles tend to follow the flow by impacting at full span with a higher impact concentration on the pressure side (PS). The suction side (SS) is affected only by the impact of the smaller particles (up to 1 μm). Particular fluid dynamic phenomena, such as separation, stagnation point, and tip leakage vortex, strongly influence the impact location of the particles.

Foulants in the ppm range which are not captured by the air filtration system usually cause deposits on blading, which results in a severe drop in the performance of the compressor.Through the interdisciplinary approach proposed in this paper, it is possible to determine the evolution of the fouling phenomenon through the integration of studies in different research fields: (i) numerical simulation, (ii) power plant characteristics and (iii) particle-adhesion characteristics. In fact, the size of the particles, their concentrations and adhesion ability, and filtration efficiency represent the major contributors to performing a realistic quantitative analysis of fouling phenomena in an axial compressor. The aim of this work is the estimation of the actual deposits on the blade surface in terms of location and quantity. This study combines the impact/adhesion characteristic of the particles obtained through a CFD and the real size distribution of the contaminants in the air swallowed by the compressor.The blade zones affected by deposits are clearly reported by using easy-to-use contaminant maps realized on the blade surface, in terms of contaminant mass.The analysis has shown that particular fluid-dynamic phenomena and airfoil shape influence the pattern deposition. The use of a filtration system decreases the contamination of the blade and the charge level of the electrostatic seems to be less important than the air contaminant concentration. From these analyses, some guidelines for proper installation and management of the power plant (in terms of filtration systems and washing strategies) can be drawn up. Characterization of the air contaminants in the power plant location represents the most important step in improving the management of the gas turbine power plant.© 2016 ASME

In fact, the size of the particles, their concentrations and the filtration efficiency represent the major contributors to performing a realistic quantitative analysis of the fouling phenomena in an axial compressor.The integration of these research fields could represent a valuable support for the investigation of the relationship between compressor airfoil design and fouling rate.

In recent years, a considerable effort has been devoted towards the application of advanced techniques for turbomachinery efficient fluid dynamic control during operations. A novel strategy to dynamically modify and optimize the performance during operations takes advantage of shape memory alloys properties. Experimental and numerical analyses on a morphing polymeric blade for an automotive axial fan are presented. The blade shape change was achieved by shape memory alloys strips, thermomechanically treated, embedded in the blade and thermally activated by hot air stream flow. Measurement of fluid temperature, blade surface temperature pattern and three-dimensional shape change of the blade during activation was performed by means of an innovative image analysis technique in a purpose-built wind tunnel. Computational fluid dynamics numerical simulations were performed to study performance variations and three-dimensional fluid dynamic behavior of the fan originated from the shape memory effect.

In heavy-duty gas turbines, the microparticles that are not captured by the air filtration system can cause fouling and, consequently, a performance drop of the compressor. This paper presents three-dimensional numerical simulations of the microparticle ingestion (0 μm–2 μm) on an axial compressor rotor carried out by means of a commercial computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code. Particle trajectory simulations use a stochastic Lagrangian tracking method that solves the equations of motion separately from the continuous phase. The NASA Rotor 37 is considered as a case study for the numerical investigation. The compressor rotor numerical model and the discrete phase model were previously validated by the authors in the first part of this work. The kinematic characteristics (velocity and angle) of the impact of micrometric and submicrometric particles with the blade surface of an axial transonic compressor are shown. The blade zones affected by particle impact were extensively analyzed and reported in the first part of this work, forming the starting point for the analyses shown in this paper. The kinematic analysis showed a high tendency of particle adhesion on the suction side (SS), especially for the particles with a diameter equal to 0.25 μm. Fluid dynamic phenomena and airfoil shape play a key role regarding particle impact velocity and angle. This work has the goal of combining, for the first time, the kinematic characteristics of particle impact on the blade with fouling phenomenon by the use of a quantity called sticking probability (SP) adopted from literature. From these analyses, some guidelines for a proper management of the power plant (in terms of filtration and washing strategies) are highlighted.

Gas turbine operating state determination consists of the assessment of the modification, due to deterioration and fault, of performance and geometric data characterizing machine components. One of the main effects of deterioration and fault is the modification of compressor and turbine performance maps. In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulations of a multistage axial compressor are carried out. As a case study, the axial sections (i.e. the first six stages) of the Allison 250-C18 axial-centrifugal compressor are considered for the numerical investigation. Simulations are performed by means of a commercial computational fluid dynamic code. A multistage numerical model is set up and validated against the experimental data, gathered from an in-house test rig. Computed performance maps and main flow field features show fairly good agreement with the experimental data. The model is then used to cross-validate the results of zero-dimensional stage-stacking procedures and the stage maps obtained by means of a multistage CFD calculation (i.e. to evaluate the mutual consistency of the two methods for the generation of multistage compressor maps). The stage-stacking procedure results adequately fit the behavior of the multistage compressor.Copyright © 2014 by ASME

Particles of this size can follow the main air flow with relatively little slip, while being impacted by flow turbulence. It is of great interest to the industry to determine which areas of the compressor airfoils are impacted by these small particles. Particle trajectory simulations use a stochastic Lagrangian tracking method that solves the equations of motion separate from the continuous phase. Then, the NASA Rotor 37 is considered as a case study for the numerical investigation. The compressor rotor numerical model and the discrete phase treatment have been validated against the experimental and numerical data available in literature. The number of particles, sizes, and concentrations are specified in order to perform a quantitative analysis of the particle impact on the blade surface. The results show that micro-particles tend to follow the flow by impacting at full span with an higher impact concentration on the pressure side. The suction side is affected only by the impact of the smaller particles (up to 1 μm). Particular fluid-dynamic phenomena such as separation, stagnation point and tip leakage vortex strongly influence the impact location of the particles.

This paper evaluates the characteristics of water-in-glass evacuated tube solar water heaters including assessment of the circulation rate through single ended tubes. A numerical model of the fluid flow inside a single ended evacuated tube has been developed assuming no interaction between adjacent tubes in the collector array. The numerical model is firstly validated by means of literature data. Then, the performance in terms of circulation mass flow rate in different heat flux condition and at different inclination angle of the collector are evaluated. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis on the effect of the assumptions of different reference parameters and of the choice of the values of the fluid thermophysical properties is carried out and a quantitative analysis of the expected uncertainty is presented. Finally, an extension of previous literature correlations in terms of non-dimensional Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers is proposed. Regarding heating boundary conditions, the circumferential heat distribution was found to be an important parameter influencing the flow structure and circulation rate through the tube.

Increasing energy-demand and environmental concerns are leading to a growing interest in alternative and sustainable energy solutions. Low-grade waste heat recovery through ORC systems is considered to be one of the most feasible eco-friendly energy conversion technologies. In this paper, a comprehensive model of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system for micro-CHP applications is presented in order to compare the behavior under part-load conditions of two types of positive displacement expanders, a single-screw expander and a scroll expander. The ORC model is implemented in the AMESim® environment, which allows system modeling both for steady-state and transient analysis. Typical residential electrical and heating loads are considered to study the performances of a suitable small-scale system. By means of a detailed quasi-1D model for a single-screw expander and a Reverse Engineering (RE)-Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach for a scroll expander, the performance characteristic maps of both expansion machines, in terms of isentropic efficiency as function of expansion ratio and rotational speed, have been determined and implemented in the AMESim® model. A comparison between the selected expanders is presented to address the influence of different positive displacement-type expanders on the overall ORC performances at off-design conditions. The capability of the system to meet the requested loads is also discussed.
