Abstract

International audience; $^{26}$Al is an important radioisotope in astrophysics that provides evidence of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The $^{23}$Na(α, p)$^{26}$Mg reaction has been identified by a sensitivity study as being one of the most important reactions for the production of $^{26}$Al in the convective C/Ne burning shell of massive stars. Owing to large uncertainties in previous experimental data, model calculations are used for the reaction rate of $^{23}$Na(α, p)$^{26}$Mg in this sensitivity study. Current experimental data suggest a reaction rate a factor of ∼40 higher than model calculations. However, a new measurement of this reaction cross section has been made in inverse kinematics in the energy range Ec.m.=1.28–3.15 MeV at TRIUMF, and found to be in reasonable agreement with the model calculation. A new reaction rate is calculated and tight constraints on the uncertainty in the production of Al26, due to this reaction, are determined.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of semi-magic Ni-70(28)42 was investigated following complementary multinucleon-transfer and secondary fragmentation reactions. Changes to the higher-spin, presumed negative-parity states based on observed gamma-ray coincidence relationships result in better agreement with shell-model calculations using effective interactions in the neutron f(5/2)pg(9/2) model space. The second 2(+) and (4(+)) states, however, can only be successfully described when proton excitations across the Z = 28 shell gap are included. Monte Carlo shell-model calculations suggest that the latter two states are part of a prolate-deformed intruder sequence, establishing an instance of shape coexistence at low excitation energies similar to that observed recently in neighboring Ni-68.

Abstract

Fish oils are a source of polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids (AG ω3), mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which supply many benefits to human health. Tuna oil was used as a source of marine 3ω FA to enrich eggs by supplementing the diet of egg-laying hens with tuna oil. One hundred and twenty White Leghorn hens of 90 weeks old were allocated on three treatments with four replicates each, on a completely random design. Treatments consisted of adding 1 % and 2 % of tuna oil to the diets. The total lipids and ω3FA of the eggs were determined. The egg-laying hen dietary tuna oil supplement (1 and 2 %) enriched eggs with 300 % more EPA (0.40, 1.37, 1.54 mg/g lipids) and DHA (7.90, 24.67, 24.50 mg/g lipids) versus the control egg . The ω6:ω3 ratio decreased ( 11.4:1, 3.8:1, 3.0:1) as dietary tuna oil increased. There were no differences (p>0.05) among treatments in productive performance and egg quality, except egg weight which decreased with the tuna oil.Los aceites de pescado son una fuente de lípidos poliinsaturados de origen animal, principalmente de los ácidos grasos omega-3 (AG ω-3), eicosapentaenoico (EPA) y docosahexaenoico (DHA), beneficiosos para la salud. En este trabajo se utilizó el aceite de atún como fuente de estos nutrientes en el huevo para consumo. Se utilizaron 120 gallinas blancas Leghorn Isa-Babcock B-300 de 90 semanas de edad, distribuidas al azar en tres tratamientos, con cuatro réplicas cada uno. Los tratamientos consistieron en adicionar 1% y 2% de aceite de atún en la dieta de las gallinas ponedoras. Se determinaron los lípidos totales y AG ω-3 en el huevo, obteniéndose 300 % más de EPA (0,40, 1,37, 1,54 mg/g lípidos) y DHA (7,90, 24,67, 24,50 mg/g lípidos) al adicionar 1 y 2% de aceite de atún en la dieta de las aves, que en el grupo testigo. La relación ω-6: ω-3 en el huevo disminuyó con el suplemento dietético de aceite de atún (11,4:1, 3,8:1, 3:1), lo mismo ocurrió con el peso del huevo. Otras variables de productividad de las aves y la calidad del huevo no se afectaron (p>0,05).

Abstract

An extensive study of the level structure of Co61 has been performed following the complex Mg26(Ca48,2α4npγ)Co61 reaction at beam energies of 275, 290, and 320 MeV using Gammasphere and the Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA). The low-spin structure is discussed within the framework of shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A effective interaction. Two quasirotational bands consisting of stretched-E2 transitions have been established up to spins I=41/2 and (43/2), and excitation energies of ∼17 and ∼20 MeV, respectively. These are interpreted as signature partners built on a neutron ν(g9/2)2 configuration coupled to a proton πp3/2 state, based on cranked shell model (CSM) calculations and comparisons with observations in neighboring nuclei. In addition, four ΔI=1 bands were populated to high spin, with the yrast dipole band interpreted as a possible candidate for the shears mechanism, a process seldom observed thus far in this mass region.

Abstract

The interaction between neutron-rich nuclei plays an important role for understanding the reaction mechanism of the fusion process as well as for the energy production through pycnonuclear reactions in the crust of neutron stars. We have performed the first measurements of the total fusion cross sections in the systems 10,14,15C+12C using a new active target-detector system. In the energy region accessible with existing radioactive beams, a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical cross sections is observed. The fission barrier height of No254 is measured to be Bf=6.0±0.5 MeV at spin 15 and, by extrapolation, Bf=6.6±0.9 MeV at spin 0. This information is deduced from the measured distribution of entry points in the excitation energy versus spin plane. The same measurement is performed for Th220 and only a lower limit of the fission barrier height can be determined: Bf(I)>8 MeV. Comparisons with theoretical fission barriers test theories that predict properties of superheavy elements.

Abstract

The inclusive breakup for the 11Li+208Pb reaction at energies around the Coulomb barrier has been measured for the first time. A sizable yield of 9Li following the 11Li dissociation has been observed, even at energies well below the Coulomb barrier. Using the first-order semiclassical perturbation theory of Coulomb excitation it is shown that the breakup probability data measured at small angles can be used to extract effective breakup energy as well as the slope of B(E1) distribution close to the threshold. Four-body continuum-discretized coupled-channels calculations, including both nuclear and Coulomb couplings between the target and projectile to all orders, reproduce the measured inclusive breakup cross sections and support the presence of a dipole resonance in the 11Li continuum at low excitation energy.

Abstract

In this article we discuss two aspects related to the 12C + 12C fusion reaction at low energies for carbon burning in supermassive stars. First we present plausible arguments for the notion that the observed resonance structures at the lowest measured energies arise from the relatively large spacing and narrow width of 24Mg compound levels at the corresponding excitation energy region. We thus point out that the Incoming Wave Boundary Condition is inappropriate for calculating the fusion cross section under these situations. Secondly, we report on a particle-γ coincidence technique that has been used for the first time to measure the fusion cross section in the system 12C + 12C at low beam energies. Based on these results, it should be possible to measure this important fusion cross section down to the 10 pb level within a reasonable length of time.

Abstract

New, low-lying levels in the odd-odd, N=Z nucleus 62Ga have been identified using a sensitive technique, where in-beam γ rays from short-lived nuclei are tagged with β decays following recoil mass identification. A comparison of the results with shell-model and IBM-4 calculations demonstrates good agreement between theory and experiment, with the majority of predicted low-lying, low-spin T=0 states now identified. There is a dramatic change in the level density at low excitation energies for the N=Z nucleus 62Ga when compared with neighbouring odd-odd Ga isotopes where, in contrast, the low-lying level structure is dominated by configurations with T=1 pairing interactions between excess neutrons. This illustrates the distinctively different aspects of nuclear structure exhibited by nuclei with N=Z.

Abstract

A measurement of the final state distribution of the B-8 beta decay, obtained by implanting a 8B beam in a double-sided silicon strip detector, is reported here. The present spectrum is consistent with a recent independent precise measurement performed by our collaboration at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla [O. S. Kirsebom et al., Phys. Rev. C 83, 065802 ( 2011)]. It shows discrepancies with previously measured spectra, leading to differences in the derived neutrino spectrum. Thanks to a low detection threshold, the neutrino spectrum is for the first time directly extracted from the measured final state distribution, thus avoiding the uncertainties related to the extrapolation of R-matrix fits. Combined with the IGISOL data, this leads to an improvement of the overall errors and the extension of the neutrino spectrum at high energy. The new unperturbed neutrino spectrum represents a benchmark for future measurements of the solar neutrino flux as a function of energy.

Abstract

The low-spin level scheme of 68Ni was investigated with the Gammasphere array following reactions between a 70Zn beam and 238U, 208Pb, and 197Au targets. Spin assignments for some states have been verified through γ-ray angular correlations, including the 0+ assignment for the 2511-keV level. Two previously unknown states at 3302 and 3405 keV have been identified. No evidence was found for a recently reported 216-ns, 0+ isomer at 2202 keV that was attributed to a proton two-particle, two-hole intruder configuration, despite experimental conditions similar to those used in the measurement reporting its discovery.

Abstract

New high-spin microsecond isomers, with Jπ=(31+) and Jπ=(28), have been identified in 206Bi at 10170 and 9233keV, respectively, using γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy following deep-inelastic reactions with the 76Ge+208Pb system. Yrast and near-yrast levels populated in the decay of these isomers have been located and interpreted with the help of shell-model calculations. The states identified at energies up to approximately 7 MeV can be described well in terms of one-proton-particle, three-neutron-hole couplings.

Abstract

The reaction 8Li + 2H has been studied in inverse kinematics at the incident energy of 3.15 MeV/nucleon, using the REX-ISOLDE post-accelerator. The reaction channels corresponding to (d,p), (d,d), and (d,t) reactions populating ground states and low-lying excited states in 7–9Li have been identified and the related angular distributions extracted and compared with coupled-channels, distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA), and coupled-reaction-channels calculations. For the inelastic and (d,t) channels we find that higher order effects are very important and hence one needs to go beyond the simple DWBA to extract reliable structure information from these processes.

Abstract

Gamma rays assigned to 2872Ni44 have been identified with Gammasphere in deep-inelastic reactions involving a 450-MeV 76Ge beam and a 198Pt target. Using a combination of spectra produced by double gates on the known 454-, 843-, and 1095-keV members of the ground-state cascade, a coincident line at 199 keV has been identified and is tentatively assigned as the 8+→6 + transition. These γ-ray coincidences have been observed only in prompt events, indicating an 8+ half-life below 20 ns and requiring a large B(E2) enhancement compared to that expected from a seniority scheme. This value is consistent with models showing decay to a seniority ν=4, 6+ level that is depressed by the same two-body interaction responsible for the rather low 1095-keV 21+ energy, as compared to the valence-symmetry counterpart 4494Ru50.

Abstract

Submitted to J. Phys. G: Nucl. Phys; Expérience GANIL-SPIRAL; Beta-delayed proton and $\gamma$-ray emission from the 32Ar decay has been studied at the low-energy identi cation station of SPIRAL at GANIL. The study of $\beta$ -delayed charged-particle emission and electromagnetic radiation allowed us to achieve a nearly complete decay scheme of the 32Ar nucleus. With the distinction between $\beta$-delayed protons emitted to the ground and to the rst excited state in 31S and the new values of half-life and QEC we have deduced the Gamow-Teller strength distribution over a large part of the QEC window. The GT strength is compared to advanced shell-model calculations. The experimental Gamow-Teller strength is wider distributed than theoretically predicted and the onset of the Gamow-Teller Giant Resonance happens at lower energy. This explains why the deduced value for the quenching factor depends strongly on the explored excitation energy in the daughter nucleus. When the energy window is chosen large enough the standard quenching factor for the sd-shell is recovered.

Abstract

Accurate measurements of the 8B neutrino spectrum are important for the interpretation of solar neutrino data. Experimentally, the 8B neutrino spectrum can be obtained from the measurement of the β-delayed α spectrum. We report on an α-α coincidence measurement performed at the IGISOL facility in Jyväskylä, Finland. Our measurement allows extensive cross-checks to be performed and gives a more intense neutrino spectrum at high energies compared to the present standard. The deviation reaches 4% at the end point of the spectrum. Below 11 MeV, the deviation is less than 1%.

Abstract

The β decays of 12N and 12B have been studied at KVI and JYFL to resolve the composition of the broad and interfering 0+ and 2+ strengths in the triple-α continuum. For the first time a complete treatment of 3α decay is presented including all major breakup channels. A multilevel, many-channel R-matrix formalism has been developed for the complete description of the breakup in combination with the recently published separate analysis of angular correlations. We find that, in addition to the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV, more than one 0+ and 2+ state is needed to reproduce the spectra. Broad 0+_3 and 2+_2 states are found between 10.5 and 12 MeV in this work. Abstract

The proton-rich nucleus 33Ar has been studied by detailed proton and gamma-ray spectroscopy at the low-energy facility of SPIRAL at GANIL. Proton and gamma-ray singles and coincidence measurements allowed to establish a quasi complete decay scheme of this nucleus. By comparing the proton intensity to different daughter states, tentative spin assignments have been made for some of the states of 33Cl. The Gamow-Teller strength distribution is deduced and compared to shell-model calculations and a quenching factor is determined. Abstract

Two complementary experimental techniques have been used to extract precise branching ratios to unbound states in C-12 from N-12 and B-12 beta-decays. In the first the three alpha-particles emitted after decay are measured in coincidence in separate detectors, while in the second method N-12 and B-12 are implanted in a detector and the summed energy of the three a-particles is measured directly. For the narrow states at 7.654 MeV (0(+)) and 12.71 MeV (1(+)) the resulting branching ratios are both smaller than previous measurements by a factor of similar or equal to 2. The experimental results are compared to no-core shell model calculations with realistic interactions from chiral perturbation theory, and inclusion of three-nucleon forces is found to give improved agreement. Abstract

Active targets are perfect tools for the study of reactions induced by radioactive ion beams of very low intensity. Thus, they make possible the study of direct and compound reactions at the same time. In this talk, we will present the results obtained with the MAYA active target for low energy reactions induced by the halo nucleus 11Li. A method used to measure the mass of short-lived nuclei, applied to the 11Li case will be discussed. The experimantal angular distribution of the two halo-neutron transfer reaction 1H(11Li,9Li)t at 4.3A MeV, using the MAYA detector as a thin target, will be presented and compared to coupled reaction channel calculations including 3-body models in order to extract informations on the structure of the 11Li halo. The extraction of the 11Li+p optical potential using the data on the elastic scattering, will also be discussed. Finally, the excitation function of the resonant elastic scattering reaction, determined using the MAYA detector as a thick target, will be presented. Extraction of information on the structure of possible 12Li isobaric analog states observed in 12Be using several R-matrix calculations will be shown.

Abstract

Active target MAYA, expérience TRIUMF; The mass of 11Li has been determined from Q-value measurements of the 1H(11Li, 9Li)3H reaction. The experiment was performed at TRIUMF laboratory with the GANIL active target MAYA. Energy-energy and angle-angle kinematics reconstruction give a Q value of 8.119(22) MeV for the reaction. The derived 11Li two-neutron separation energy is S2n = 363(22) keV.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of states in C-12 have been a subject of interest for both theory and experiment since the early days of nuclear physics. Many open questions remain, especially concerning the existence and properties of 0(+) and 2(+) states in the triple alpha continuum. A series of experiments have been performed using beta-decay of N-12 and B-12 to probe these states. The latest experiment was performed at KVI using an implantation method, measuring the sum energy of the three alpha-particles directly. Preliminary results from this experiment will be presented.
